• Humorist H. Allen Smith made a trip with his wife to visit places he had lived at as a young man. He and his wife went to visit a dance club where Mr. Smith had very happy memories of squiring his girlfriends. They discovered that the dance club had been torn down and its foundation was in the middle of a pasture where a goat was grazing. Mr. Smith’s wife told him, “I see one of your old girlfriends is left.”
• English critic Sir Max Beerbohm and his aging wife went to a party. Sir Max was immediately surrounded by many beauties who wanted to impress him, but as soon as it was proper for him to leave the party, he turned to his wife and said, “Darling, let’s go to a restaurant and find a quiet corner. You are looking so charming tonight that I want to talk to you alone.”
• Beatrice Kaufman, the wife of playwright George S., was brilliant in her own right. Playing the game “Ask Me Another,” which bored her, she was asked, “Who wrote The Virginian?” Having correctly answered “Owen Wister,” she was asked the next question, “Who wrote The Virginians?” This time she answered “Owens Wisters.”
• G.K. Chesterton was disorganized in his personal life, and he relied on his wife to keep track of his appointments. One day, he sent her a telegram: “AM IN MARKET HARBOROUGH. Where ought I to be?” She wired him back: “HOME.”
• Gail Parent writes comedy, which has occasionally led to problems. While she was in college, a suitor gave her one perfect rose. She ruined what could have been a tender romantic moment by asking, “Where are the other eleven?”

• Pat Hutchins wrote a children’s book titled The Mona Lisa Mystery, in which someone smuggles the famous painting from the museum by wrapping it around a leg then wrapping a bandage over the painting. After the book was published, a child wrote her to say that the painting could not be smuggled out of the museum in that way — the Mona Lisa is painted on wood. Ms. Hutchins did some extra research and discovered that the child was right.
• The Ukrainian playwright O.E. Korneychuk wrote plays praising the Communists of the USSR. In one underground joke, Comrade Korneychuk said that he had put a lot of fire into his new play. A theater-goer replied, “It would have been better if it had been the other way around.”
• Ballerina Margot Fonteyn was so famous that she had huge numbers of press clippings, most of which she neglected to read. However, one notice did give her special satisfaction: “Margot Fonteyn, who has triumphed in many more exotic places, last night conquered Flatbush.”
• Dorothy Parker — who signed her book reviews in The New Yorker as “Constant Reader” — disliked cutesy children’s books. She wrote this review of A.A. Milne’s House at Pooh Corner: “Tonstant Weader fwowed up.”
• Walter Savage Landor enjoyed criticizing many, many things. Once he even criticized the Psalms! Hearing this, a friend of his, Marguerite, Countess Blessington, smiled and said, “Do write something better, Mr. Landor.”
• After being barred from seeing the opening of a play, columnist Walter Winchell wrote that he would wait three days and see the play’s closing.
Today, BadToTheBoneBob shares his birthday with a French Alpine skier who swept the Gold at the 1968 Winter Olympics in the Downhill, Slalom, and Giant Slalom, followed by a career as a TV spokesman. What is the name of this World Cup winning skier?
Jean-Claude Killy (born 30 August 1943) is a former French World Cup alpine ski racer. Born in Saint-Cloud, Hauts-de-Seine, he dominated the sport in the late 1960s. He was a triple Olympic champion, winning the three alpine events at the 1968 Winter Olympics, becoming the most successful athlete there. He also won the first two World Cup titles, in 1967 and 1968.

Claude Killy. Or more exactly, Jean-Claude Killy. I remembered him. The 1968 Winter Olympics were the first to be televised in color to the USA, and Killy’s dominance, his charm and gallic good looks made him a favorite of US women. He acted and appeared on TV. He promoted ski equipment, but also other products like charge cards and automobiles. Killy dabbled in auto racing, competing at Le Mans and other circuits, and then came out of retirement to compete on the US professional ski circuit, where he won the championship in 1973.

At first I thought it was Spider Sabich, then realized it’s John-Claude Killy. I was living near Aspen during the Ted Bundy years, which were also marked by the mysterious killing of Spider Sabich by Claudine Longet, the ex-wife of Andy Williams.

Chadwick Boseman’s final tweet was a powerful one, supporting Sen. Kamala Harris and encouraging Americans to vote in the upcoming election.
Boseman died at the age of 43 following a years-long battle with colon cancer, his family shared on the actor’s social media accounts on Friday. The last tweet the Black Panther star had shared himself was a photo of him and Harris, the Democratic Vice Presidential nominee.
“YES @KamalaHarris!” he wrote on Aug. 11, the day Harris was chosen as Joe Biden's running mate.
Boseman shared a picture of him and Harris, both of whom graduated from Howard University, embracing and laughing. He added the hashtags #WhenWeAllVote and #Vote2020.
On Saturday, Harris shared another photo from the same event, writing: "From his groundbreaking work in Black Panther to his portrayal of Thurgood Marshall, Chadwick Boseman helped paint a new picture of what’s possible. Keeping his family, friends, and fans in my prayers during this difficult time."
The new visual for “They Don’t Care About Us (2020)” incorporates scenes and outtakes from Lee’s original two videos for the HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I single — both the Brazil version and the prison-set one that examined police brutality — with footage from George Floyd protests from around the world.
“Great protest songs can’t get old, stale or non-relevant because the struggle still continues. That’s why THEY DON’T REALLY CARE ABOUT US is the anthem during this chaotic, pandemic world we are all living in,” Lee said in a statement.
“To celebrate Michael Jackson’s born day, we have made the THEY DON’T REALLY CARE ABOUT US 2020 short film to continue the struggle for equality for all. That’s the truth, Ruth. Be safe.”
The Crown star Olivia Colman has revealed she accidentally swore while meeting Queen Elizabeth II.
Colman portrays Her Royal Highness in the popular Netflix series, but admits she lost her cool when it came to actually meeting her.
The 46-year-old told of the encounter during an appearance on the Variety Streaming Room alongside co-star Helena Bonham Carter, show runner and writer Peter Morgan and director Jessica Hobbs.
She told host Jenelle Riley: “Suddenly we looked around the corner like, ‘Oh f***.’ This man in epaulets was telling us what to do, ‘Just a little bow, don’t overdo it,’ and sort of scuffled us forward.
For various reasons, Disney rejects the term “premium video on demand,” or PVOD, in reference to its release via Disney+ of Mulan on Friday. But regardless of the label for it, the release will be as closely watched as any in recent Hollywood history, even that of Tenet, which arrives in theaters the day before.
Mulan is a $200 million, live-action remake of the 1998 Disney animated film. Days after its March 9 premiere at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, its scheduled March 27 release fell under a dark cloud due to COVID-19. After postponing the release multiple times, hoping to salvage the highly profitable theatrical window, Disney in early August decided to shift it to its Disney+ streaming service — only with a twist.
Instead of making it available as a PVOD title, a la Trolls World Tour and many others in recent months, or dropping for all subscribers a la Hamilton, Mulan will arrive via a brand-new venue within Disney+ called Premier Access. Subscribers to the $7-a-month-Disney+ will need to pay an additional $30 to watch it before it is made available as a basic offering to all subscribers. (Disney hasn’t indicated the timing of that broader, no-extra-charge release.)
Premiere Access is available via disneyplus.com and within the Disney+ app on third-party platforms like Apple, Google and Roku. Existing Disney+ subscribers can get Premier Access to Mulan by paying the $30 fee directly on DisneyPlus.com. Any Disney+ subscriber springing for Premier Access to Mulan will be able to download it watch it an unlimited amount of times as long as they remain an active Disney+ subscriber.
Amazon Fire TV is not one of the in-app payment partners as of now, so any Disney+ subscriber watching through Fire will need to go out to disneyplus.com and verify the purchase before returning. That’s true of a few other platforms as well. But once Mulan is purchased, it is positioned like other Disney+ titles in the user interface — it will be found on the home page and can be added to subscribers’ Watch List.
The US Justice Department in 2017 took secret steps to curtail the special counsel investigation into Russian election interference and possible coordination with the Trump campaign, former law enforcement officials told The New York Times.
According to the newspaper, former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein had ordered former special counsel Robert Mueller to examine “any links and/or coordination between the Russian government” and Trump’s campaign, but former law enforcement officials said that privately, Rosenstein told Mueller to conduct only a criminal investigation.
Mueller had documented extensive evidence in his final report in March 2019 that Trump tried to obstruct the Russia investigation in multiple ways, and declined to make a charging decision. A Justice Department policy said that a sitting President could not be indicted.
The Times report comes one week after the Senate Intelligence Committee released the most comprehensive and meticulous examination to date explaining how Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election and the Trump campaign welcomed the foreign adversary’s help, revealing new information about contacts between Russian officials and associates of Trump during and after the campaign.
Unlike Mueller’s report, which focused on questions of criminal conduct, the committee’s report detailing the findings of its counterintelligence is hundreds of pages of facts the panel obtained, drawing conclusions in places where Mueller often stopped short of doing so.
Psychedelic users have long been reported therapeutic properties of LSD, especially for pain, and now, after decades of being banned from clinical trials, scientists are finally revisiting the drug and putting it to the test.
A randomized double-blind study has now found small amounts of LSD can reduce the perception of pain significantly more than a placebo.
With just three non-hallucinogenic "micro"doses, participants displayed what seemed to be an increase in pain tolerance and a decrease in subjective perceptions of pain. This prolonged response, the authors claim, is on par with up to 20 mg of oxycodone or morphine.
The size of the dosage, however, did matter. Any amount of LSD lower than 20?µg (which is considered a relatively large microdose among online users) did not seem to have this reported analgesic effect.
"The present data suggest that low doses of LSD might constitute a novel pharmacological therapy that can be efficacious in patients and is devoid of problematic sequelae that are associated with current mainstay drugs, such as opioids," the authors conclude.
A day after making national headlines for sending a police overtime bill to the 18-year-old organizer of a local Black Lives Matter protest, Mayor Mario Kranjac says he reached out to the organizer to rescind the bill.
Kranjac said Saturday that he sent information to the organizer, Emily Gil, saying he had been told “that all private events requiring police overtime should be paid for by the organizers.”
“It was never intended as a fine, but rather as a fee,” Kranjac said. “I have researched the issue further with my own counsel and I am hereby rescinding the bill, subject to our Council’s ratification of my action.”
After holding the protest in July, Gil received a letter from Kranjac that said that she owed the borough $2,499.26 for police overtime.
State legislators called the bill “outrageous” and county officials referred to it as an “onerous charge.”
Humans are used to keeping time by measuring Earth's movement relative to the sun. But while Earth's trips around its star are noteworthy to life on our pale blue dot, that journey is pretty insignificant when compared with the epic voyage that carries the sun — and our entire solar system — around the center of the Milky Way.
Orbiting the Milky Way galaxy just once takes the sun approximately 220 million to 230 million Earth years, according to Keith Hawkins, an assistant professor of astronomy at the University of Texas at Austin.
In other words, if we were to measure time by this galactic "clock," Earth would be about 16 years old (in galactic, or cosmic years), the sun would have formed about 20 years ago, and the universe would be just about 60 years old.
The solar system's journey around the galaxy resembles Earth's orbit around the sun. But rather than orbiting a star, the sun circles the supermassive black hole that lies at the center of the Milky Way and exerts a tremendous amount of gravity on everything in the galaxy, Hawkins said.
Compared with an Earth year, a galactic year represents time on a grand scale — but it's not a consistent measurement across the galaxy. What we Earthlings call a galactic year is specific to Earth's place in the Milky Way's spiral.
In these troubled times there comes a point where we all need to let off steam.
For this huge geyser in Yellowstone park, the moment was now and the eruption was spectacular, after a six-year wait.
But, for the rest of us, watching this natural phenomenon is strangely meditative and beautifully distracting from much of the bad news around, despite the violent geothermal forces propelling it.
Giantess Geyser spouted for the first time in more than six years in Yellowstone National Park, which straddles part of Wyoming and a little of Montana, on 25 August, according to the US National Park Service (NPS).
“She” has more typically erupted between twice and six times a year in the past, according to the NPS website, and blasts a spout up to 200ft high.
