• Watanabe Kazan, a samurai and a painter, was once placed under house arrest and ordered not to paint. Because he needed the income that he derived from painting, he continued to paint, but added earlier dates to his paintings to fool the authorities.

• Al Capp, creator of Li’l Abner, once hosted a party for a group of South American cartoonists. Unfortunately, he discovered that none of them could speak English. This meant that the only English-speaking people were himself, his brother, a few members of the State Department who wanted to foster greater understanding between North and South Americans, and fellow cartoonist Walt Kelly, creator of Pogo. Mr. Capp got tired of his party, so he and his brother ducked out, leaving Mr. Kelly to host the non-English-speaking South American cartoonists. Mr. Kelly responded with a creative act of revenge. He found an interpreter, and he told one of the South American cartoonists that Mr. Capp had told him that it was his dearest wish that the cartoonist be given his baby grand piano. When Mr. Capp arrived back home, he discovered his baby grand being lowered from his living-room window to the street below so it could be moved to a ship and taken to South America.
• Hugh Troy was once summoned along with some other artists to the estate of a wealthy society lady who was holding an auction — attendance by invitation only (in other words, only rich people are welcome) — to raise money for a charity to benefit something or other. When the artists arrived, she told them, “I am giving you just two minutes of my time. You are each to paint a picture for the auction.” When Mr. Troy asked if the artists were allowed to attend the party after their work was done, the society lady said, “No.” Then the society lady ordered a servant to take the artists to a place with art materials they could use to paint pictures for the charity auction. However, Mr. Troy was annoyed at the woman, so instead of painting a picture he painted these signs: “Picnic Parties Welcome,” “Welcome to the Carnival!” and “Free Rides! Bring the Kiddies!” Then he displayed the signs all around the entrance to the woman’s estate, and left.
• In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Grant Wood received a commission from the American Legion to create a stained-glass window. Unfortunately, the Daughters of the American Revolution made a big stink when they discovered that the glass had been made in Germany, the United States’ enemy in the then-recent World War I. (By the way, Mr. Wood had served in the U.S. Army.) The DAR wrote indignant letters and made indignant speeches. Mr. Wood got revenge later when he painted a portrait of three sour-faced women — he titled it “Daughters of the American Revolution.”

• Maya Lin designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the Mall in Washington, D.C., as the result of an assignment by Professor Andrus Burr of Yale University. He gave everyone in his class the guidelines of the contest to design the Memorial — it had to include the names of all the Americans killed or missing in action during the Vietnam War, and it had to be in harmony with the landscape and monuments of the Mall. Of all the students in the class, Ms. Lin was the only one to submit her design to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund. Her design consisted of two walls that sank into the ground and then rose again. The names of the Vietnam dead and MIAs were engraved on the two walls. In addition, the walls were made of highly polished black marble to give a reflection of the Mall and of the people looking at the walls. Although Ms. Lin’s design was the unanimous winner of the contest, when she had submitted her design to Professor Burr, he felt that it was “too strong” and gave it a B. However, Professor Burr encouraged Ms. Lin to submit her design to the VVMF, and he made two important suggestions concerning her design, both of which she accepted. He suggested that the two walls come together and form an angle, and he suggested that the names on the wall be arranged by date of death rather than by alphabetical order — a stroke of genius that Ms. Lin says kept the wall from looking “like a telephone book engraved in granite.”
Sesame (Sesamum indicum) is a flowering plant in the genus Sesamum, also called benne. Numerous wild relatives occur in Africa and a smaller number in India. It is widely naturalized in tropical regions around the world and is cultivated for its edible seeds, which grow in pods. World production in 2016 was 6.1 million tonnes, with Tanzania, Myanmar, India, and Sudan as the largest producers.
Sesame seed is one of the oldest oilseed crops known, domesticated well over 3000 years ago. Sesamum has many other species, most being wild and native to sub-Saharan Africa. S. indicum, the cultivated type, originated in India and is tolerant to drought-like conditions, growing where other crops fail. Sesame has one of the highest oil contents of any seed. With a rich, nutty flavor, it is a common ingredient in cuisines across the world. Like other seeds and foods, it can trigger allergic reactions in some people.
In 2016, world production of sesame seeds was 6.1 million tonnes, led by Tanzania, Myanmar, India, and Sudan.

Tanzania is the largest producer of sesame seed in the world, followed by Myanmar, India, China and Sudan. In terms of area, Sudan tops the list and followed by India, Myanmar, Tanzania and Nigeria. The other major producing countries are Nigeria, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Chad and Uganda. The top ten producing countries contribute 85% of the world sesame seed production.

It’s either India or China; the Interwebz can’t decide.
Woke up about 4 am to awful, gusty winds. Then thunder…then lightning…then rain. Wash, rinse, repeat, sans wind, until about 9:30. The rest of the day, until around 4pm, was overcast, and, and 40% humidity, muggy. So unusual.
Randall replied:
Tanzania?
Joe ( -- Vote Blue, No Matter Who -- ) responded:
I don't know...the Interwebs suggested Tanzania. That's a country in Africa. That's all I know about that, if I know anything.

A new mural in East Nashville honors country legend and Tennessee native Dolly Parton and her support of Black Lives Matter.
The mural is featured outside The 5 Spot on Forrest Avenue. It features a colorful image of the East Tennessee native, along with a recent quote in which she voiced her support for the Black Lives Matter movement.
Parton recently spoke out in support of the Black Lives Matter movement during an interview with Billboard.
"Of course Black Lives Matter," Parton said “I think that everybody needs to express themselves however they feel they have to. I’m not out, like I said, I’m not out here to tell you what to do. I don’t want you to tell me what to do, but I just do what my heart tells me to do. I ask God to direct me and lead me, and if I’ve got his direction I don’t have to worry too much about anything else. But I do understand people are having to make themselves known and felt and seen. And of course Black Lives Matter. Do we think our little white asses are the only ones that matter? No! Everybody matters," Parton said in a video clip posted by billboard.
Just two years ago, Parton received both praise and backlash for renaming her Stampede dinner attraction in Pigeon Forge by taking the "Dixie" out of Dixie Stampede.
On Friday, music superstar Rihanna visited the Cadillac Ranch tourist attraction in Amarillo, Texas, and stirred conversation on social media after leaving behind a message for President Donald Trump (R-Incompetent).
At the ranch, which is known for featuring 10 Cadillac vehicles “buried nose-down in a field as the same angle as the Cheops Pyramid” the singer spray painted two words, one of which was Trump’s last name — the other was an “F”-word expletive.
In the Instagram post where she shared the photo, the singer of hits like “Umbrella” and “Diamonds,” left the caption “art.”, in addition to a hashtag reading “81 days.” The hashtag appears to allude to the date of the November Presidential Election.
It pays to be a part of television history. The Brentwood home that served as the exterior establishing shot in the first season of The Golden Girls has sold for $4,000,260. That’s one million dollars over the asking price. The sale closed today. The buyer was not immediately identified.
EARLIER: You can spend your golden years in the house that served as the home for TV’s The Golden Girls — if you have a spare $2.999 million.
A piece of television history is on the market for the first time, part of an estate sale after the death of the original owners. The mid-century modern, built in 1955, is a 4-bedroom home in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles. Its exterior was used in the first season, purportedly to show the home of the four seniors living together in Miami. The actual interior was never shown.
The 3,000-square-foot home has a wraparound porch, fireplace and beamed ceilings. It has a Japanese style interior separated by screens. Oak floors and floor-to-ceiling windows are highlights.
Sharon Stone is asking her followers for their prayers following her sister’s hospitalization with COVID-19.
The Basic Instinct star, 62, took to social media late Saturday to share her passionate message, which explained that her sister, Kelly, is now confined to a hospital room to fight the disease, which she contracted even though “the only place she went was the pharmacy.”
“My sister Kelly, who already has lupus, now has COVID-19. This is her hospital room,” wrote Stone, who showed a series of three photos of her sister’s hospital room. “One of you non-mask wearers did this. She does not have an immune system.”
“There is no testing in her county unless you are symptomatic, and then it’s five-day wait for results,” wrote Stone. “Can YOU FACE THIS ROOM ALONE? Wear a mask! For yourself and others. Please.”
On Friday, the US Food & Drug Administration issued a publicly available list of medical supply shortages for the first time.
The list cited the CARES Act that was signed in March for adding an additional section in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Part of the new section required the FDA to "maintain a publicly-available, up-to-date list of the devices the FDA has determined to be in shortage," the FDA announced.
In the list, a number of PPE, testing supplies, and ventilation related products are stated to be short in supply. Surgical apparel, patient examination gloves, sterile swabs, and ventilators are among those on the list.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump (R-Failure) lauded the nation's supply of medical supplies at Friday's press conference at the White House. He commemorated his administration for using the Defense Production Act "more than any President in history" to help America create ventilators.
While the US struggles in medical supplies like ventilators and PPE shortages, Trump has for long lauded his administration's ability to secure supplies.
Greenland's ice sheet may have hit a tipping point that sets it on an irreversible path to completely disappearing.
Snowfall that normally replenishes Greenland's glaciers each year can no longer keep up with the pace of ice melt, according to researchers at Ohio State University.
That means that the Greenland ice sheet - the world's second-largest ice body - would continue to lose ice even if global temperatures stop rising.
In their study, published Thursday in the journal Nature, the scientists reviewed 40 years of monthly satellite data from more than 200 large glaciers that are draining into the ocean across Greenland.
"What we've found is that the ice that's discharging into the ocean is far surpassing the snow that's accumulating on the surface of the ice sheet," Michalea King, the study's lead author and researcher at Ohio State University's Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center, said in a press release.
One of the major challenges in turning quantum technology from potential to reality is getting super-delicate quantum states to last longer than a few milliseconds – and scientists just raised the bar by a factor of about 10,000.
They did it by tackling something called decoherence: that's the disruption from surrounding noise caused by vibrations, fluctuations in temperature, and interference from electromagnetic fields that can very easily break a quantum state,
"With this approach, we don't try to eliminate noise in the surroundings," says quantum engineer Kevin Miao, from the University of Chicago. "Instead, we trick the system into thinking it doesn't experience the noise."
By applying a continuous alternating magnetic field to a type of quantum system called a solid-state qubit, in addition to the standard electromagnetic pulses required to keep such a system under control, the team was able to 'tune out' unnecessary noise.
Using the new approach, the solid-state qubit system was able to stay stable for 22 milliseconds – four orders of magnitude or 10,000 times longer compared with previous efforts, though still less than a tenth of a blink of an eye.
Jewellers in the traditionally lucrative Indian gold market are struggling -- even while the metal's value skyrockets -- as coronavirus fears keep sales down, craftsmen at home and shops shuttered.
Months after India lifted its strict lockdown, the country's biggest gold market Zaveri Bazaar remains desolate, with most stores closed and no customers in sight.
"We have been running this shop for the last 40 years and I have never seen the business hit such lows," said 75-year-old Madhubhai Shah, one of only a handful of jewellers who decided to reopen.
The Mumbai market was hit hard by the March lockdown, which saw millions of migrant workers -- including many gold craftsmen -- flee India's cities as their income dried up.
And with gold prices hitting record highs after soaring around 30 percent this year, there is little incentive for customers to splash out on jewellery.
One of Germany's best-known food companies said it will rename a popular spicy dressing because of the racist connotations of its name.
Food company Knorr will change the name of its “Zigeuersauce,” or "gypsy sauce" to "Paprika Sauce Hungarian Style," the German weekly Bild am Sonntag reported Sunday.
“Since ‘gypsy sauce’ can be interpreted in a negative way, we have decided to give our Knorr sauce a new name,” said Unilever, the international consumer goods group that owns Knorr. Unilever could not independently be reached for comment on Sunday.
The popular spicy sauce, a staple in many German households, will within a few weeks show up with the new name in supermarkets across the country, Bild am Sonntag reported.
“Zigeuner” is a derogative German expression for the Roma and Sinti minority groups who have lived in many European countries for centuries. Roma and Sinti are still discriminated against in Europe. They often live below the poverty line and on the margins of society without equal access to education, jobs, or the opportunity for upwards mobility.
The terms “Zigeunersauce” has been used in Germany for more than 100 years to describe a hot sauce based on tomatoes with small-chopped pieces of bell pepper, onions, vinegar and spices like paprika. It's mostly served with meat.
