Julianne Moore: 'Can we talk about something else now?' (Guardian)
Junkies, porn stars, alcoholics and in her latest film What Maisie Knew a terrible mother - on screen Julianne Moore lets it all hang out. So surely she won't mind Simon Hattenstone quizzing her about all those sex scenes…?

PS: @B2BB: "...if we can believe (as I do) that we are not alone in the cosmos..." I'm with you there B2! I too have Carl Sagan's book, "Cosmos" and watched all segments of the PBS series by the same name, but he always came across as cold, and rather 'cocky' and/or arrogant to me. He was highly educated, but had a closed mind! Thanks for the clarification...

Broadway composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim is being awarded one of the top honours in the arts world: the Edward MacDowell Medal for lifetime achievement.
The award is being presented Sunday at the MacDowell Colony, the prestigious retreat for artists, writers and composers in Peterborough, N.H. This is the first time the medal has been awarded for achievement in musical theatre. Past recipients include Robert Frost and Georgia O'Keefe.
In a statement when the award was announced, Sondheim called the medal a "sort of homecoming," noting that as a child he used to play compositions by Edward MacDowell, for whom the prize is named.
Sondheim has won more Tony Awards than any other composer. His hit musicals include "Follies," ''A Little Night Music" and "Sweeney Todd."

A gospel singer who says God delivered him from being gay did not perform at a concert the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial.
The Washington Post reports singer Donnie McClurkin was scheduled to perform Saturday night to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, but several gay rights activists objected ahead of the event.
Doxie McCoy, a spokeswoman for Mayor Vincent Gray, says the Grammy-winning singer decided not perform because the purpose of the event was to bring people together.
But in a video statement linked to McClurkin's Twitter page, he says he was "asked not to attend" and was uninvited. McClurkin says there should be freedom of speech "as long as it's done in love."
If aliens ever target Earth, Jon Gibson and Amanda White are counting on them having an appreciation for pop art and a sense of humor.
The duo created an elaborate, Andy Warhol-like design that has been etched into a satellite's panel, transforming the spacecraft into a replica of an oversized electrical charging device.
"If someone is going to invade our planet, presumably they're going to come in some sort of electronic, electricity-powered ship," Gibson notes whimsically. "Maybe this will make them stop for a moment and say, 'These guys are nice. We're not going to destroy their planet.'"
At the very least, it will give them the opportunity to pause briefly and check out what may be the world's first orbiting work of art.
Of the 1,000 or so functioning satellites that race around Earth every day, there isn't one he knows of that also doubles as art, says veteran satellite builder Craig Clark, who runs the Scotland-based company preparing to launch this one from Kazakhstan on Oct. 29.

Stamp enthusiast Brian Grant Duff remembers the thrill of handling what was, until recently, thought to be the only two examples of Canada's rarest stamp, the two cent "large Queen on laid paper."
It's estimated by some to be worth as much as $1 million.
Grant Duff was in his early 20s, and working for Vancouver dealer Daniel Eaton. Eaton obtained one example of the rare stamp from Britain's stamp and collectibles giant Stanley Gibbons in 1986, and the second one from Winnipeg stamp dealer Kasimir Bileski in 1993. For nearly 90 years, the two copies were the only ones known to exist.
So when Grant Duff heard recently that a third example of every Canadian stamp collector's wildest dream was discovered in a circuit book - a book that contains stamps and is passed between collectors and dealers - and bought earlier this year by an unnamed collector for roughly five dollars, he was gobsmacked.
Apparently, so was the Vincent Graves Green Philatelic Research Foundation, a postal history research organization based in Toronto that recently examined the third copy.
Australia's Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is battling not only jaded voters in a bitter election race, but the rancor of Rupert Murdoch (R-Evil Incarnate), whose newspapers have depicted Rudd as everything from a Nazi colonel to a thief stealing the nation's savings.
The Australian-born Murdoch's crusade to oust Rudd in the September 7 general election has given rise to a heated social media campaign inside a campaign, as Twitter, Facebook and other digital platforms become the weapons used by some to try to outflank Murdoch's "old media".
As the campaign kicked off last week, Murdoch's best-selling Daily Telegraph tabloid urged readers to "Kick This Mob Out" over a picture of Rudd at Parliament House.
In another front page from Murdoch's News Corp stable, Rudd and top lieutenants were shown as the hapless Nazi guards from the 1960s "Hogan's Heroes" television show, while another greeted a high-profile recruit to Rudd and Labor's center-left cause with the headline "Send in the Clown".
Many people think Murdoch is using his 70 percent grip on big-city newspaper sales to protect the dominance of his prized cable TV investments from emerging digital media threats, chiefly a publicly funded $34 billion super broadband network championed by Rudd.
Italy may get its own political dynasty out of the ashes of Silvio Berlusconi's political career.
The nation has been buzzing with speculation that Marina Berlusconi will step in as her father's political heiress ever since the supreme court last week confirmed the three-time former premier's tax fraud conviction, jail sentence and ban from politics.
Berlusconi's eldest daughter is a long-time executive at his Mediaset media empire and was among a clutch of close advisers by his side at his Rome residence when the court ruled on Aug. 1. She has in the past repeatedly denied any intention to enter politics, but has remained silent during this new round of speculation.
Political analysts say the prospect of a Marina Berlusconi candidacy is realistic.
Berlusconi loyalists have gone on the record this week rooting for Marina, who turns 47 on Saturday. Berlusconi's close friend, the former Renault F1 manager Flavio Briatore, told the Milan daily Corriere della Sera: "She is a very intelligent woman, a Berlusconi - a name that millions of Italians adore."

The sign leaves no doubt about the risk in entering the steep seaside hills that North America's rarest bird calls home: "Danger. Boom. Explosives. Unexploded Ordnance and Laser Range in Use. Keep Out."
Despite the weekly explosions that rock this Navy-owned island off the Southern California coast, the San Clemente Island loggerhead shrike has been rebounding from the brink of extinction, even on the military's only ship-to-shore bombardment range.
The black, gray and white songbird - which has gone from a low of 13 in the 1990s to 140 today - is among scores of endangered species thriving on military lands during the past decade.
For many, it's a surprising contrast, with troops preparing for war, yet taking precautions to not disturb animals such as the red-cockaded woodpecker and thumb-size Pacific pocket mouse. But military officials downplay the relationship, saying they're concerned primarily with national security.
Defense spending on threatened and endangered species jumped nearly 45 percent over the past decade from about $50 million a year in 2003 to about $73 million in 2012. The military protects roughly 420 federally listed species on more than 28 million acres, according to the Pentagon.

A Virginia man who caught a fish known as "Frankenfish" has set a world record.
Caleb Newton hooked the 17-pound, 6-ounce northern snakehead in a creek in northern Virginia during a fishing tournament June 1. The "Frankenfish" gets its nickname because of its appearance and adaptability. The invasive species native to Asia is able to breathe air and survive in very shallow waters or mud.
The Free Lance-Star reports the International Game Fish Association confirmed the record catch. It beat a snakehead caught in Japan in 2004 by 2 ounces.
Newton is a 27-year-old plumber in Spotsylvania County. He has said it only took him about a minute to get it into the boat, and the 3-foot long fish barely fit into his cooler.
Apparently, Australians and Brits are having trouble making pancakes. Brits seem to be the only ones to know how to tie their ties among their Commonwealth and American counterparts. Many are confused about whether America is a country or a continent, and those same people wonder if Canada is part of it.
This is what Noah Veltman discovered when he entered various search questions and the Google Search Engine completed his sentences with the most popular entries in "America," Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia. It gives us a humorous, but quite depressing graph of how these four nations perceive themselves and one another, views that reinforce old and new stereotypes.
Canada seems to be having an inner conflict with itself, thinking it's "so great" and "awesome," but "boring", and "in Afghanistan." Its friends all agree that Canada is "awesome" and "nice", but they are not sure why it's a country, or a developed one for that matter.
If the latest Google search suggestions for Canada might sound hurtful for any proud Canuck, I don't recommend typing a more "exotic" location in there. Typing Iraq or Afghanistan will surely lead to more problematic results than the ones wanting that we are boring, or that Brits are arrogant.

The makers of Canned Unicorn Meat have expanded their mythical butchering practices to meet the public's dire need for dragon nutrients.
Charred Dragon Meat, sold for $12.99 a can, can satisfy all your knightly needs on the go without having to tackle Smaug like Bilbo Baggins and the dwarves.
"The most dangerously delicious meat on Earth!" the advertisement on ThinkGeek boasts.
While the imaginary unicorn meat is rendered at the Sisters of Radiant Farms in Ireland where nuns nurse the dying beasts until the end of their lives, according to its producers, dragon dinners require a more direct - and more cruel - approach, ThinkGeek says.
They send embittered nurses, angry after years of watching unicorns die, to the dragon rendering plant in Scotland.

The dystopian science fiction thriller "Elysium" topped the weekend box office with $30.5 million, according to studio estimates Sunday, enough to beat three newcomers, including the Jennifer Aniston comedy "We're the Millers."
Sony's "Elysium," directed by Neill Blomkamp and starring Matt Damon, opened in line with expectations, but still debuted somewhat modestly for a $115 million action film. It couldn't match Blomkamp's previous film, the $30 million "District 9," which opened with $37.4 million in August 2009.
But "Elysium" was able to come out on top in a crowded weekend, with three other new wide releases: the R-rated Warner Bros. comedy "We're the Millers," starring Jason Sudeikis and Aniston ($26.6 million over the weekend, a strong $38 million since opening Tuesday night); Disney's "Cars" spinoff "Planes" ($22.5 million) and Fox's fantasy sequel "Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters" ($14.6 million over the weekend, $23.5 million since Wednesday).
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released on Monday.
1. "Elysium," $30.5 million ($10.9 million international).
2. "We're the Millers," $26.6 million.
3. "Planes," $22.5 million.
4. "Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters," $14.6 million ($9.8 million international).
5. "2 Guns," $11.1 million.

Wooden model Cylon is posed holding a newspaper in the flat of its maker, Ukrainian Dmitry Balandin, in Zaporizhzhya August 6, 2013. It took Balandin, who works as a crane operator, six months to build the model from 500 parts. Balandin says he does not use blueprints and designs the parts as he works on them. He says he would love to build metal models but that is impossible to do so in his small apartment. He plays with Cylon as a child would play with a doll or Lego toy, and is now making a girlfriend for his model. He hopes to eventually build an entire model family and have them displayed at exhibitions and galleries.
