Roger Ebert: A Shot in the Dark
"Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself." It seems to me that Universal Health Care is a powerful example of loving your neighbor as yourself.
Gail Collins: Where the Jobs Are (New York Times)
Right now you are probably asking yourself: "What would it be like to live in a place with an unemployment rate of 1 percent?" … If the place you love can't quite climb out of the recession, think of this as consolation. At least you're not living in a man camp and waiting half an hour in line for a Big Mac.
Matthew Yglesias: There Is No Sovereign Debt Crisis (Slate)
The federal government could borrow money and then cut large, unrestricted checks to state governments. More conservative states would probably use the money to cut taxes, while states like California and Maryland could use the money to preserve public services or upgrade infrastructure. Fiscal free lunches don't come around very often, but there is one today. It's time to stop obsessing over a handful of troubled Mediterranean countries and start spending our free money.
Suw Charman-Anderson: "Mark Coker: Significant Disruption For Traditional Publishers Still To Come" (Forbes)
Four years ago self-publishing was viewed as the option of last resort for authors, where failed authors went, but this attitude is changing dramatically. For a lot of authors, self-publishing is going from the option of last resort to the option of first resort. There was a lot of stigma associated with self-publishing four years ago and very little stigma associated with traditional publishing. I think over next few years we're going to see that reverse.

Jean-Louis "Jack" Kerouac (March 12, 1922 - October 21, 1969) was an American novelist and poet. He is considered a literary iconoclast and, alongside William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg, a pioneer of the Beat Generation.
In July 1957, Kerouac moved to a small house at 1418½ Clouser Avenue in the College Park section of Orlando, Florida, to await the release of On the Road. Weeks later, a review appeared in The New York Times proclaiming Kerouac the voice of a new generation. Kerouac was hailed as a major American writer. His friendship with Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs and Gregory Corso, among others, became a notorious representation of the Beat Generation. The term "Beat Generation" was invented by Kerouac during a conversation held with fellow novelist Herbert Huncke. Huncke used the term "beat" to describe a person with little money and few prospects. "I'm beat to my socks", he had said.
Kerouac's novel is often described as the defining work of the post-World War II Beat Generation and Kerouac came to be called "the king of the beat generation," a term that he never felt comfortable with. He once observed, "I'm not a beatnik, I'm a Catholic", showing the reporter a painting of Pope Paul VI and saying, "You know who painted that? Me."

Takes one to know one, Jackie...
PS: While I very much consider myself a '60's woman, I was not into beat poetry. That being said, I do remember it like it was yesterday... You would go down the back alleys in Greenwich Village, and into a smoke-filled 'club,' featuring beat poet's reading their insights into their reality... Nobody knew to what they were referring, but, not wanting to look 'uncool' you snapped your fingers in agreement... That's right, no applause, just snapping fingers to acknowledge the reader's superior wisdom...
And, most readers were really bad too. It was into this environment that came Bob Dylan (whom I liked) but he so fit into the existentialist fringes of that current society of navel-pickers... So much for those, "good old days..."

Three young women who staged an irreverent punk-rock protest against Vladimir Putin on the altar of Russia's main cathedral go on trial on Monday in a case seen as a test of the president's tolerance of dissent.
The trial of the activists - from the band 'Pussy Riot' - should show how much power the resurgent Russian Orthodox Church and its head, Patriarch Kirill, wields. He has called the "punk prayer" blasphemy, casting it as part of a sinister anti-clerical campaign.
Maria Alyokhina, 24, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 29, were jailed in late February after taking to the altar of Moscow's Christ the Saviour Cathedral and belting out a song calling on the Virgin Mary to "throw Putin out!". The plight of the three women, two of whom have young children, has made headlines in the West.
Governments and rights groups, as well as musicians such as Sting and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, have expressed concern about the trial, reflecting doubts that Putin - who is serving his third presidential term and could be in power until 2024 - will become more tolerant of dissenting voices.
Charged with hooliganism motivated by religious hatred or hostility, the women face up to seven years in prison if convicted - a punishment rights groups say would be grossly disproportionate no matter what the law says.

The pageant, which began in the 1960s, judges contestants not only by their looks, but also their fluency in indigenous languages and knowledge in traditional customs and ceremonial presentations. A total of 102 indigenous women from 14 regions of Guatemala are participating in this year's event, according the local media.

CBS won't be monkeying around with its traditional fall TV show roll out, despite rival networks moving up the premieres of many of their new comedies and dramas to late August or early September.
CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler told television reporters on Sunday that the No. 1 U.S. network had no concerns about its new shows being drowned out by rivals like NBC's "Animal Practice," which features a cute monkey and will debut in August.
CBS, a unit of CBS Corp, has been the most-watched U.S. network for nine years thanks to hits like comedy "The Big Bang Theory" and crime franchises "NCIS" and "CSI."
It is introducing just four new TV shows this fall, including a modern version of Sherlock Holmescalled "Elementary" and a 1960s-era drama starring movie actor Dennis Quaid called "Vegas."
CBS will roll out its new ventures in the last week of September, the only one of the four leading U.S. TV networks to stick with the industry's traditional premiere week.
CBS News says "Face the Nation" will permanently become an hour-long program as a growing viewership in recent months has made it the top-rated Sunday morning public-affairs show.
A provisional expansion for the program anchored by Bob Schieffer began in April. Until then, the broadcast had been only 30 minutes in duration, half the length of rival shows "Meet the Press" on NBC and "This Week" on ABC.
Roughly one-third of CBS stations still aren't airing the second half-hour each week. But CBS News president David Rhodes said Sunday's announcement was meant to assure those holdouts that the show's expansion won't be short-lived.

Movie Star News amassed a staggering amount of film stills, posters and negatives over the past 73 years - nearly 3 million, including 1,500 prints of Bettie Page, known as the queen of pin-ups. But last week, the once-lively store in lower Manhattan was lifeless. The classic movie posters that once covered its narrow 2,000-square-foot space were rolled up or covered in cellophane, its bins and racks empty. Everything was packed up in cardboard boxes that lined the floor.
The legendary Manhattan store credited with creating pin-up art had sold its entire inventory to a Las Vegas collectibles company.
The collection, regarded as one of the largest of its kind, is headed for the auction block. It will be sold in a series of sales slated to begin next year. The bulk of the collection covers the years 1939 to 1979; 11,500 movies and 5,000 actors are represented.
"This is the most important photo archive of Hollywood in existence. There are tens of thousands of negatives that have never been reproduced," said Stuart Scheinman, co-owner of Entertainment Collectibles, which bought the collection. "There are images here that have never been seen by the public."
There are 2,000 original prints and negatives of Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando, 1,000 of Gary Cooper, 400 of Bette Davis, hundreds of movie images of "The Godfather" and "Gone With the Wind."
Dick Cheney (R-Gun Nut) has some advice for Mitt Romney (R-Dressage) on choosing a running mate: Don't pick another Sarah Palin (R-Quitter).
In his first interview since receiving a heart transplant in March, Cheney told ABC News, that John McCain's decision to pick Palin as his running mate in 2008 was "a mistake" - one that it is important from Romney not to repeat.
It's subject on which Cheney has some unique experience. He helped Presidents Gerald Ford and George W. Bush lead their vice presidential searches and, of course, served as vice president for eight years. He's also privately offered some advice to both Romney and Beth Myers, who is leading Romney's search for a running mate, on the process.
Cheney would not comment on what he told Romney and Myers, but he was harsh in his assessment of McCain's decision to pick Palin.

A federal appeals court on Friday cleared the way for new rules to take effect next week that will force broadcasters to publish political advertising contracts online.
The court denied an emergency motion from the National Association of Broadcasters (R-1%) to stop the rules from taking effect during a larger judicial review.
The Federal Communications Commission adopted the rules in April to provide insight on campaign spending ahead of November's congressional and presidential elections. They will reveal who is paying for political campaign ads and just how much they are shelling out.
The NAB has said its members stand to lose millions of dollars in ad revenue because cable and Internet competitors, who are not subject to the rules, will get an unfair advantage for political advertising.
Robert Duvall is an unusual figure in the Hollywood milieu - he's a well-known entertainer who is willing to lend his star power to promoting a Republican politician.
The "Apocalypse Now" star is taking a cue from his left-leaning counterparts by hosting a fundraiser for presumptive GOPpresidential candidate Mitt Romney next month. According to an invitation spotted by National Journal, Duvall is opening his Middleburg, Va., home to Romney boosters - as long as they're willing to open their wallets - and "special guest" Ann Romney on September 6.
Tickets to the event start at $2,500 per person for entry to the general reception, $10,000 grants them access to the VIP photo reception and $25,000 saves them a spot at Duvall's dinner party for the presidential hopeful's wife and deep-pocketed supporters. Proceeds from the function will go to the joint fundraising committee Romney Victory, Inc.
By throwing in so publicly for Romney, Duvall bolsters his position among a relatively small group of Hollywood heavyweights, including Kelsey Grammar, Jon Voight, Drew Carey and Adam Sandler, who register (at least with their checkbooks) on the conservative side of the political spectrum.
According to OpenSecrets.com, Voight donated $3,500 to John McCain's campaign in 2008; Grammar contributed $4,600 to Rudy Giuliani and $2,300 to McCain during the last election cycle; Carey pitched in $2,300 for Ron Paul's campaign in 2007 and Sandler ponied up $2,100 for Giuliani's presidential run that same year.

A southeastern Pennsylvania church and a youth pastor are facing criminal charges for a mock kidnapping of a youth group that was meant to be a lesson in religious persecution.
The Glad Tidings Assembly of God in Middletown and 28-year-old Andrew David Jordan of Elizabethtown were charged Friday with false imprisonment and simple assault, said Dauphin County District Attorney Ed Marsico.
The church staged the event in March. Mock kidnappers covered the teenagers' heads, put them in a van and interrogated them. Neither the young people nor their parents were told beforehand that it wasn't real. The mother of a 14-year-old girl filed a complaint with police.
"We need to protect children, no matter where the harm occurs," Marsico said, adding that a grand jury recommended the charges. He noted that some of the teenagers in the group were not members of the church, and that a semi-automatic rifle was displayed in the exercise.
The ancient Colosseum of Rome, where gladiators fought for their lives, is slanting about 40 cm (16 inches) lower on the south side than on the north, and authorities are investigating whether it needs urgent repairs.
Experts first noticed the incline about a year ago and have been monitoring it for the past few months, Rossella Rea, director at the 2,000-year-old monument, said in an article published in the Italian daily Corriere della Sera on Sunday.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa, another of Italy's most popular attractions, was reopened in 2001 after being shut for more than a decade as engineers worked to prevent it from falling over and to make it safe for visitors.
Rea has asked Rome's La Sapienza University and environmental geology institute IGAG to launch a study on the phenomenon, with investigations to be concluded in a year.
Only an itsy-bitsy, teeny-weeny number of bikini-wearers turned out to strut their stuff in a southern Minnesota town.
Organizers had hoped for hundreds of women to march Saturday in what was billed as the World's Largest Bikini Parade.
But the number of bikini-wearing women - and a couple of men in bikini tops - at the Paddlefish Days Parade in Madison Lake fell far short of the world record.
The (Mankato, Minn.) Free Press reported Saturday the number appeared to be 39. Women were told they could wear shorts over their bikini bottoms once it was clear the record of 451 was unattainable.
"The Dark Knight Rises" stayed atop the box office for the second straight weekend, making just over $64 million. But it's lagging behind the staggering numbers of its predecessor, 2008's "The Dark Knight."
The final piece in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy has now grossed more than $289 million in its first 10 days in theaters. It dropped 60 percent from its opening weekend of $160.9 million.
In second place this weekend was the animated family film "Ice Age: Continental Drift," which is still going strong in its third week. It made $13.3 million for a domestic total of nearly $114.9 million. The fourth movie in the 20th Century Fox franchise features the voices of Ray Romano, Denis Leary and Queen Latifah.
Both of the new movies in wide release opened weakly. The 20th Century Fox comedy "The Watch" came in third place with $13 million. Big-name comic actors Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill play a group of guys who come together to form a neighborhood watch; despite the star power, the film was panned critically, receiving only 14 percent positive reviews on the Rotten Tomatoes website.
And "Step Up Revolution" - the fourth film in the dance franchise, which is set in Miami this time - opened at No. 4 with $11.8 million. Richie Fay, Lionsgate's president of domestic distribution, said the number was a little disappointing because the studio expected it to end up in the mid-teens. But the core audience for the previous three "Step Up" films showed up: 63 percent was female and 71 percent was under age 24.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
1. "The Dark Knight Rises," $64 million. ($122.1 million international.)
2. "Ice Age: Continental Drift," $13 million. ($49.4 million international.)
3. "The Watch," $13 million.

8. "Magic Mike," $2.6 million. ($5.3 million international.)
