David Weigel: The GOP's Strange Obsession With the "War on Women" (Slate)
I'm not even sure of what the attack is telling us, apart from how the party committees are more confident attacking sex scandals than in advertising the state GOP bills that Democrats are grouping into the "war on women."
Terry Savage: When Will It End? (Creators Syndicate)
When will this bull market end? When you least expect it! That's the "rule" of bull markets. Bull markets power past all rational thought, all the naysayers, and all the doubters. Only when everyone is sucked in, and there is no one else left to buy, only then does a bull market end.
Marilyn Preston: To Buy or Not to Buy ... Organic: Know the Dirty Dozen (Creators Syndicate)
It happens every summer in mid-July. I'm at the farmers market, scooping up the locally grown fruits and vegetables that were harvested that very morning. And it hits me - the Strawberry Crisis. Should I buy two boxes of strawberries for $5 or go organic and pay the same amount for one box?
Jill Filipovic: Despite Virginia Johnson's legacy, we're still screwed-up about sex (Guardian)
In a better reality, sexuality would be understood as a fundamental part of human existence, its good inherent and not dependent on how it can be leveraged. Why? Because pleasure is a good thing. We should all feel more of it when we can. And sex, for many people, is a source of a uniquely wonderful range of pleasurable feelings - physical, emotional and spiritual.
Because this play is said to be cursed, actors avoid saying its name, using the euphemism "The Scottish Play" instead. Outside the theater-world, what is the title of this work?
Fear of frogs and toads is both a known specific phobia, known simply as frog phobia or ranidaphobia (from ranidae, the most widespread family of frogs), and a superstition common to the folkways of many cultures. Psychiatric speciality literature uses the simple term "fear of frogs" rather than any specialized term. The term batrachophobia has also been recorded in a 1953 psychiatric dictionary.

@B2BB, speaking of Sally Struthers (today's birthdays). My friend (recent houseguest) just went up to Maine with her daughter to see a local production of, "Thoroughly Modern Millie" starring Ms Struthers. My friend's daughter had a friend in the cast and was invited (with Mom) to the cast party on the last night of the show. Who should appear there, but Sally! Everyone agreed that she not only mentors the young cast, but is very genuine and nice. Everyone had a joyous time, and she stayed with them for quite a while.
I love stories about unpretentious celebrities.

Michelle Link Comment - I don't know what's suddenly up with all this military "Lack of Spiritual Fitness" falderal... Wasn't at all like that in the 70's-80's during my time in uniform. "Sky Pilots" kept a low profile. Only once (right after boot camp) did I ever speak with one (about a family issue) during my 6 years in the army. I did see them wandering around, occasionally, in the hospitals I worked at, but they were there for the patients and we ignored them. Out in the field they'd come around and it was, for me, like, "Hey, Padre", and that was it... and in my 10 1/2 years in the CG, I only saw one. It was at a 9th District Rear Admiral Change of Command ceremony in Cleveland. He gave a non-denominational opening invocation and that was it. The CG has Navy chaplains attached only at the bigger bases and they never visited the small units... Anyway, there certainly wasn't any mandatory compulsion implied or directed. What's going on now is disconcerting to me, to say the least... and kinda creepy scary.

But thankfully the critters don't live inside,
That's a bit more frog than I could abide.

A Hillary Rodham Clinton miniseries timed to precede the 2016 presidential election is part of NBC's effort to create "event" programming that will draw viewers to the shrinking world of broadcast network TV, NBC's programming chief said Saturday.
"We need to be in the event business. I think you're going to hear that from every broadcast network," said Bob Greenblatt, NBC Entertainment chairman.
The four-hour miniseries "Hillary," starring Diane Lane as the former first lady and secretary of state, is one such bid for distinctive programming, he said.
The goal is to woo viewers who are increasingly drawn away by cable TV's eye-catching, critically acclaimed fare like "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad" and other media choices.
Broadcasting's audience is shrinking by 4 percent to 7 percent annually, Greenblatt told a meeting of the Television Critics Association.
A North American bumblebee species that all but vanished from about half of its natural range has re-emerged in Washington state, delighting scientists who voiced optimism the insect might eventually make a recovery in the Pacific Northwest.
Entomologists and bee enthusiasts in recent weeks have photographed several specimens of the long-absent western bumblebee - known to scientists as Bombus occidentalis - buzzing among flower blossoms in a suburban park north of Seattle.
"It's a pretty big deal," said Rich Hatfield, a biologist for the Oregon-based Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, which documents and reports such findings.
The multiple sightings, including observations of several queens, are evidence of western bumblebee colonies in the area, although it hardly proves the species has returned in force and or that it will thrive in the region, Hatfield said.
Last year, a single western bumblebee, recognized by its distinctive white-banded bottom, was discovered by an insect enthusiast in her mother's garden in suburban Brier, Washington. It was the first sighting in Washington state west of the Cascades in well over a decade.
Deep in the mountains of northern Idaho, miles from the nearest town, lays evidence of a little-known portion of a shameful chapter of American history.
There are no buildings, signs or markers to indicate what happened at the site 70 years ago, but researchers sifting through the dirt have found broken porcelain, old medicine bottles and lost artwork identifying the location of the first internment camp where the U.S. government used people of Japanese ancestry as a workforce during World War II.
Today, a team of researchers from the University of Idaho wants to make sure the Kooskia Internment Camp isn't forgotten to history.
"We want people to know what happened, and make sure we don't repeat the past," said anthropology professor Stacey Camp, who is leading the research.
Giant sites where thousands of people were held - such as Manzanar in California, Heart Mountain in Wyoming and Minidoka in Idaho - are well-known. But Camp said even many local residents knew little about the tiny Kooskia camp, which operated from 1943 to the end of the war and held more than 250 detainees about 30 miles east of its namesake small town, and about 150 miles southeast of Spokane, Wash.

It's taken five years, but singing star Celine Dion has attended a ceremony to pick up a medal elevating her within the Order of Canada.
The pop star was at the Governor General's Quebec City residence to receive the award Friday, a day before her concert at the nearby Plains of Abraham battlefield.
It was a rare appearance outside Las Vegas for the Quebec-born star, who is in the midst of a three-year stint at Caesar's Palace casino.
It was initially announced in 2008 that Dion would be elevated to the highest rank of the Order of Canada, that of Companion. She was first named to the order in 1998, at the lower rank of Member.
A staggering 40 million euro ($53 million) worth of diamonds and other jewels was stolen Sunday from the Carlton Intercontinental Hotel in Cannes, in one of Europe's biggest jewelry heists in recent years, police said. One expert noted the crime follows recent jail escapes by members of the notorious "Pink Panther" jewel thief gang.
The hotel in the sweltering French Riviera was hosting a temporary jewelry exhibit over the summer from the prestigious Leviev diamond house, which is owned by Israeli billionaire Lev Leviev.
A police spokesman said the theft took place around noon, but he could not confirm local media reports that the robber was a single gunman who stuffed a suitcase with the gems before making a swift exit. The spokesman spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter on the record.
The luxury Carlton hotel is situated on the exclusive Promenade de la Croisette that stretches a mile and a half along the French Riviera, and is thronged by the rich and famous throughout the year. The hotel's position provides not only a beautiful view of the sea but also an easy getaway for potential jewel thieves along the long stretch of road.

The birth of Britain's Prince George has reopened a rift among those campaigning for Scotland to vote for independence next year, playing into the hands of those who want it to retain its 306-year union with England.
The "Yes Scotland" campaign says it wants to win a referendum on independence in 2014 and for the country to become fully independent by 2016, shaking off centuries of what it regards as oppressive rule from London.
The Scottish National Party (SNP), the main force backing independence for the country of around 5 million, has promised voters they can become independent while keeping the Queen as their monarch and the pound sterling as their currency.
Most opinion polls show around a third of Scots would vote for independence, while almost half would elect to remain part of Britain. A large number of voters remain undecided however.

Some of Italy's top politicians on Saturday rallied behind the country's first black minister, a target of racist slurs since her appointment in April, after a spectator threw bananas at her while she was making a speech.
Integration Minister Cecile Kyenge, who is originally from Democratic Republic of Congo, was appearing at a political rally in Cervia in central Italy on Friday, when someone in the audience threw bananas towards the stage, narrowly missing it.
Kyenge has faced almost daily racial slurs and threats since joining the government. Earlier this month a senator from the anti-immigration Northern League party likened her to an orangutan and only apologized after a storm of criticism.
Last month, a local Northern League councilor said Kyenge should be raped so she understands how victims of crimes committed by immigrants feel. The councilor has received a suspended jail sentence and a temporary ban from public office.

A chilling find has been made in Poland: at least 17 skeletons buried with the skulls severed and placed between the knees or hands. That, say archaeologists, is how vampires used to be interred, to stop them rising from the dead.
Construction workers building a road near the town of Gliwice in southern Poland this month came across four skeletons buried in a bizarre way. Their skulls had been cut off and placed between the knees or hands of the dead. Later, a further 13 skeletons arranged in a similar way were found.
Adding to the mystery, nothing -- no jewellery, remains of clothing or coins, not even a button -- was found on the bodies.
Archaeologists now believe that the bodies date from the 15th or 16th centuries, when the fear of vampires was widespread in Eastern Europe. Lukasz Obtulowicz, an archaeologist from the monument protection office in the nearby city of Katowice, said there were clear indications that this was the site of a vampire burial, noting that stones had been placed on the skulls. "All this served to prevent the vampires from returning to life," he said in a television interview.
A female devotee in trance walks over a man during the annual Hindu religious festival of Bonalu at Secunderabad in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh July 28, 2013. The word "Bonalu" is derived from the Telugu word "Bhojanalu", which refers to the food offered to Goddess Kali, the Hindu goddess of power. The main ritual in the month-long festival consists of offering cooked rice, jaggery, curd, water and other dishes brought by women in earthen pots to Goddess Kali. Devotees believe that the offerings will ward off evil and epidemics during the monsoon period.

David "Kidd" Kraddick, the high-octane radio and TV host of the "Kidd Kraddick in the Morning" show heard on dozens of U.S. radio stations, has died at a charity golf event near New Orleans, a publicist said. Kraddick was 53.
The Texas-based radio and television personality, whose program is syndicated by YEA Networks, died at his Kidd's Kids charity function in the New Orleans suburb of Gretna on Saturday, said publicist Ladd Biro in releasing a network statement.
"He died doing what he loved," said Biro, of the public relations firm Champion Management, speaking with AP by phone early Sunday. He said he had no further details on the death.
The "Kidd Kraddick in the Morning" show is heard on more than 75 Top 40 and Hot AC radio stations and is a leader among most-listened-to contemporary morning programs, Biro said. The radio program also is transmitted globally on American Forces Radio Network while the show's cast is also seen weeknights on the nationally syndicated TV show "Dish Nation," he added.
The Dallas Morning News reported Kraddick had been a staple in the Dallas market since 1984, starting in a late-night debut. The newspaper said he moved into morning show work by the early 1990s in that market and his show began to gain wider acclaim and entered into syndication by 2001 as he gained a following in cities nationwide.
Kraddick would have turned 54 on Aug. 22, according to Biro.
