Boris Kachka: The Decline of Harper Lee (Vulture)
Whatever Wayne Flynt's suspicions about Marja Mills, he agrees with Nelle's latest biographer on one point: Silence has not served Nelle Harper Lee. "In the absence of her being willing to talk, the only versions we'll ever have are other people's versions."
An honorary colonel in the U.S. Marines and an honorary lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, this performer is the only woman buried in the Special Forces cemetery at Ft. Bragg. What is her name?
Jonathan Kent and Martha Kent, often referred to as "Pa" and "Ma" Kent (respectively), are the adoptive parents of Superman. They live in the rural town of Smallville, Kansas. In most versions of Superman's origin story, Jonathan and Martha were the first to come across the rocket that brought the infant Kal-El, with their adopting him shortly thereafter, renaming him Clark Kent, "Clark" being Martha's maiden name.
The Kents are usually portrayed as caring parents who instill within Clark a strong sense of morals, and they encourage Clark to use his powers for the betterment of humanity. In a few continuities, Martha is also the one who creates Clark's superhero costume.

As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by
him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years
left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are
scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. My job, among other
things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and
provide email lists and groups for those who might put something
together. Those who want to play an active roll in something coming from
this, or if you are one of Bart's pillars, should send an email to

Bart's final wish was to pay off the house mortgage for Mrs. Bart who is
overwhelmed and so very grateful for the support she has received.
Anyone wanting to make a donation can click on this the yellow donate

But - I need you all to help keep this going. This note
isn't going to directly reach all of Bart's fans. So if you can repost
it on blogs and discussion boards so people can sign up then when we
figure out what's next we can let more people know. This list is just

The New York Times called for the legalization of marijuana, in a bold editorial comparing the federal ban on cannabis to Prohibition.
The prestigious publication said pot laws disproportionately impact young black men and that addiction and dependence are "relatively minor problems" -- especially when compared with alcohol and tobacco.
"It took 13 years for the United States to come to its senses and end Prohibition, 13 years in which people kept drinking, otherwise law-abiding citizens became criminals and crime syndicates arose and flourished," the newspaper said.
"It has been more than 40 years since Congress passed the current ban on marijuana, inflicting great harm on society just to prohibit a substance far less dangerous than alcohol. The federal government should repeal the ban on marijuana."

Weird Al Yankovic is perhaps the only member of the music industry's old guard who actually understands the digital future of that industry. Now he's leaving it.
Yankovic's 14th album, Mandatory Fun is his last in a 32-year deal with Sony's SNE RCA Records label. Sony didn't seem too broken up about the end of their relationship, as RCA execs outright refused to fund videos for Yankovic -- whose entire career was propped up by MTV-era videos for Eat It, Fat, Amish Paradise and I Lost On Jeopardy. As a result, Yankovic went hat-in-hand to any partners he could find and asked them to chip in and produce eight music videos.
College Humor, Nerdist, Will Ferrell's Funny Or Die, Yahoo!'s Yahoo! Screen, Google's Vevo and even News Corp's WSJ.com answered the call and rolled out eight videos from July 14 through July 21. By the end of the run, Mandatory Fun was No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and became the first comedy album to debut there since Bob Newhart's The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart in 1960. It wasn't just the parodies of Pharrell's Happy, Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines or Crosby, Still and Nash's entire catalog that propelled Yankovic that far, but the realization that the old ways just don't work anymore.
As Yankovic told participants in a Reddit Ask Me Anything earlier this month "I really don't think the album format is the most efficient or intelligent way for me to distribute my music anymore." He's not kidding. According to Nielsen, album sales of any kind plummeted from 755 million copies in 1999 to just 290 million last year. Compact disc sales have fallen steadily from 730 million in 2000 to just 165 million last year, but digital album and track sales saw their first decline in 2013 and just kept falling through the first half of 2014.
Get ready for more "Drunk History" and "Nathan for You."
Comedy Central has renewed both series for a third season, the network's president, content development and original programming Kent Alterman said Friday.
"Drunk History," which counts Will Ferrell and Adam McKay among its executive producers, pairs inebriated storytellers with A-list talent on a tour of cities across America, providing a unique reenactment of the familiar and less familiar people and events from our country's great past. The current second season of the series is up 26 percent among the 18-49 demographic most important to advertisers versus its first run, and up 17 percent among total viewers.
"Nathan for You" stars Nathan Fielder as he attempts to make small businesses profitable with highly unorthodox marketing tactics. So far, four weeks into its second season, "Nathan" is up nearly 50 percent in the demo and 34 percent in total viewers compared to its maiden voyage.

A total of 30 Charles M. Russell works fetched millions of dollars at auction in Reno, with one painting symbolizing the railroad's effect on American Indians drawing $1.9 million and another depicting a Native American chief selling for $1.1 million.
Other top prices at the annual Coeur d'Alene Art Auction on Saturday included $1.7 million for a Frederic Remington painting featuring a group of Indians and $1.5 million for a Thomas Moran painting depicting an Arizona gulch.
Russell's romantic 1897 "Dakota Chief," which sold for $1.1 million, depicts a young American Indian man on horseback who is wearing a long-tailed feathered headdress and carrying a lance. While Russell was known as "the cowboy artist" in his early days, he actually painted more Indian subjects, historians say.
The most spirited bidding of the day involved James Fraser's sculpture "End of the Trail," which depicts an American Indian warrior slumped over on his horse. Competition between two bidders drove its price up to $921,000, roughly twice the estimated price.
The Golden Rooster that spent a half century at John Ascuaga's Nugget hotel-casino in nearby Sparks sold for $234,000. The 14-pound sculpture made of 18-karat gold was unveiled at the Nugget in 1958.
The parent company of a scandal-hit Chinese food supplier said it is withdrawing all products made by the subsidiary.
Shanghai Husi Food Co Ltd, owned by Illinois-based OSI Group LLC, is at the center of a major food safety scandal, which has spread from China to Hong Kong and Japan, over allegations it mixed fresh and expired meat.
In a statement posted on its website late Saturday, OSI Group said it would "withdraw from the marketplace" all products made by Shanghai Husi, and that it was conducting an internal investigation into current and former senior management.
The scandal, which has dragged in global food brands including McDonald's Corp, KFC-parent Yum Brands Inc. and Starbucks Corp.., was triggered by a local television report last week showing staff at Shanghai Husi using long-expired meat. The report also alleged the firm forged production dates.

US airmen assigned to South Korea are banned from buying or drinking alcohol during their first 30 days in the country under a new rule underscoring the "serious mission" the troops face, officials said Friday.
The program is meant to promote "mission readiness" as well as "safety, health, welfare, good order and discipline," spokesman Captain Ray Geoffroy told AFP.
The rule is part of a "Korean Readiness Orientation" program for incoming troops issued by the 7th Air Force commander, Lieutenant General Jan-Marc Jouas.
The new policy, which took effect his month, includes a daily curfew of 10 pm to 5 am, training for sexual assault prevention and "alcohol awareness," the Air Force said.

Florida's flora and fauna can't seem to get a break. They're getting hit with another piece of bad news just weeks after a tract of endangered forestland was sold to a property developer. This time, instead of Walmart and 88 acres of rockland, a fungus transmitted by the invasive redbay ambrosia beetle is overrunning the Everglades. So far, experts haven't come up with a way to contain it.
The insect from southeast Asia carries a fungus that causes laurel wilt, a disease deadly to trees. It has decimated swamp bay trees across 330,000 acres in the Everglades since the condition was first identified in 2011, and it shows no signs of stopping. According to The Associated Press, the redbay ambrosia beetle likely entered the United States through a shipment of wood packaging.
The blight threatens to lay waste to the billion-dollar projects aimed at restoring the region. From a bird's eye view and even from the highway that cuts through the fragile wetlands, one can easily make out the dried-up gray and brown trees, reports the news agency.
The future looks even grimmer. Exotic plants that may overrun the Everglades as a result of the devastation of swamp bays can fuel fires. Also, they're not a source of food for native wildlife. The plants' roots can damage the homes of endangered species in the area. According to the National Research Council, about 16 percent of the Everglades' greenery isn't native.

Artists in Manhattan painted the bodies of 40 nude models on Saturday, turning the Columbus Circle entrance to Central Park into an outdoor celebration of the human form.
Artist Andy Golub says New York was the only city in the country that would allow his inaugural Bodypainting Day. And he says that only happened after a legal battle.
Golub and a model were arrested in 2011 during a body-painting project in Times Square.
The city paid model Zoe West a $15,000 settlement after she sued over the arrest. Public nudity is legal in the city if it's part of a performance, exhibition or show.

Luc Besson's "Lucy" proved mind can overpower muscle, topping a remake of "Hercules" by director Brett Ratner at the box office on the weekend.
The Universal Pictures-released movie starring Scarlett Johansson as an accidental psychokinetic took in $44 million in North American movie theaters over the weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday.
Despite the two films' solid performances, the summer box office is still down by around one-fifth compared to last year, according to Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with Rentrak.
Another film that opened in wide release over the weekend was the Rob Reiner-directed romantic comedy "And So It Goes," starring Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton, which collected an estimated $4.6 million, according to distributor Clarius Entertainment.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Rentrak. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released on Monday.
1. "Lucy," $44 million.
2. "Hercules," $29 million ($28.7 million).
