Target and Tom Emmer

Note: This was originally a response to a LiveJournal post, which became my own LJ entry, which I have slightly altered for Bartcop-E. Eventually, I'll submit it for a Nobel Prize in Chemestry.

Minnesota Republicans have selected Tom Emmer to run for Governor. He is a terrible choice, a teabagger in all but name. This is a guy so out of it that he blames out economic woes on waiters who make more than $100,000 a year. MN Progressive Project discusses why this is wrong even in general. The AFL-CIO nails him on specific votes. And that doesn't even count his DWI's and subsequent attempts to weaken DWI laws and cover up his own convictions and here. He seems to be channeling Dan Quayle or Sarah Palin in the "dumb things I say will get headlines but the truth is buried in the back pages" gaffe department.

And Tom Emmer is the person Target gave $150,000 in cash and in-kind goods and services. to via a PAC. He is against everything Target has worked hard to build. For example, Target claims "diversity is a core issue" and supports the MN Pride Parade. However, Tom Emmer really likes an anti-gay rock ministry and has ties to an anti-gay organization and homophobic leader. Target has been on the forefront of this civil rights issue, and Tom Emmer holds the exact opposite of Target's position. Target seems to be pandering to the lowest aspect of the teabaggers.

So I'm not going to shop there, until Target wakes up or until the governor's race is over. (If Emmer wins, I may never see the inside of a Target again.)

But I wanted to give them a chance. This afternoon, I called Target at 612-304-6073. I didn't press any of the options so got an operator who transferred me to a Special Group (I forget exactly what she called it) who transferred me to Joan at Target Guest Relations. We had a nice talk. Mainly, I politely vented and she tried to defend Target's support of "Democrats and Republicans" and pointed to their Company website. Which is not particularly helpful.

I didn't believe her. In 1976, Target Corporation was one of the founders of the 5% Club, which became the Minnesota Keystone Program. Back when liberal Republican and centrist Democrats were in power, Minnesota businesses were recognized when they gave 5% of their pre-tax earnings to the community. After years of Republican and Independence Party "leadership", companies pat themselves on the back for 2%.

Target, or any business, should not support Tom Emmer.

Tom Emmer is divisive and dismissive of anyone who doesn't follow his brand of political correctness: I don't think you can call yourself a freedom-loving American and be a Democrat,". He lies: According to the Economist poll in February, 20% of teabaggers wants to secede from the union. His supposedly "pro-buniness" platform is anything but (see also this archive of Strib column, Do state taxes really make the wealthy walk?). It's the same Pawlenty economics that saw companies flee, jobs disappear, bridges fall down and nurses strike. Tom Emmer needs to take a civics class as well as remedial math.

Target hasn't supported Emmer directly, to my knowledge. But they gave $150,000 to a group called Minnesota Forward, directed by current GOP governor Pawlenty's cheif spokester Brian McChung. As the increasingly right-wing Star Tribune points out, "The group could exert unprecedented influence in the upcoming election. A landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling this year opened the door to a far greater political role for corporations by allowing them to fund advertising blitzes for or against individual candidates."

Meanwhile, the Minnesota Forward web site is empty. You have to go to MN Forward to see what they're doing... which isn't much. Certainly not bipartisan in any sense of the word. It seems the only thing they have done is give money to Emmer, and make a video which was edited to make Emmer look thinner. Why do conservatives lie so much when they're caught so easily? As Jon Steward asks, "Don't these people know we have videotape?" People who vote Republican are gullible and stupid. But I digress.

Minnesota Forward looks like another excuse for the very wealthy to manipulate elections. "Grassroots" Karl Rove group funded almost entirely by billionaires (salon.com, click through the ads, July 23 2010CE). Because of the gullible nature of voters in general and conservatives in particular, this money will talk.

Let me take a step back: Pawlenty himself was a bad governor. He's one of those right-wingers who can't add and subtract, and is damned proud of his failings. Even Pawlenty realizes that his budgets will lead to job losses. And the "unallotment" mentioned in the article: Minnesota Supreme Court rules Pawlenty's unallotments exceeded his authority. The guy is just incompetent in everything except appealing to the weak-minded and the gullible. There, he's an expert. This is why he's running around to New Hampshire and Iowa.

I'm not a member of either political party, but I do have a sense of history. I can add and subtract, and I tend to listen to people who have been right in the past and ignore people who have been wrong. I'm extra-snarky to people who have been horribly, horribly wrong and don't have the guts to admit it. It's been a long time since there was a Repblican worth voting for. I'm fortunate that my representative, Keith Ellison, and one of my senators, Al Franken, makes me proud. I'm don't have a firm choice in the race for MN Governor this year, though I'm leaning Kelliher, but will almost certainly be voting Democratic. And I will vote with my wallet, too.

To summarize: Tom Emmer = Bad.

Target = Dumb business for supporting a bad candidate.

Shopping = somewhere else.

Addendum: Many people have weighed in over the issue. Those who aren't boycotting Target are shrugging it off: All corporations are evil, so why pick on this one? My response: Target has been doing good deeds, such as supporting GLBT issues, being a sponsor of the Pride Parade, contributing to schools, and in general being a good neighbor. If they're being responsible to turn a profit, fine. I wish to encourage positive activities. If some people are encouraged to shop at Target because they're turning their back on their previous good deeds, then its especially important to balance that out with our lack of commerce.

The 'Mad Mel' Edition...

Mel Gibson has been called a religiously insane, anti-Semitic, misogynistic, racist by a great many people. His actions and words certainly point to that as being the case. However, he has made movies that have been very popular and, in some instances, awarded and/or critically acclaimed...

So...

What is your view of Gibson as an actor and are there any of his movies that you have enjoyed?

Return Of "DS Girl"

"Family Guy"

"Family Guy" will likely bring back a disabled character that angered Sarah Palin.

Creator Seth MacFarlane told Comic-Con audiences that "Down Syndrome Girl" would likely return to the show, and he even sang the character's theme song live to the San Diego crowd.

"My guess is that at some point we will (bring her back)," MacFarlane said, "despite all the Palin business."

Mark Hentemann, who wrote the episode, said at Comic-Con: "This season I decided I'd even things out and write something that would offend smart people."

Energize Fans At Protest

Rage Against The Machine

Hordes of police cruisers circled the Hollywood Palladium on Friday as Rage Against the Machine played its first hometown show in a decade to protest Arizona's new immigration law.

The men in blue were quite aware of the potential for disobedience civil or otherwise. But the rare chance to see one of Los Angeles' greatest bands, especially in its natural habitat, must have outweighed any urge to stir things up.

Not that things weren't incendiary inside the renovated old hall as the politically charged quartet took the stage: At the first beats of the opening "Testify," mosh pits kicked up instantly, like sprinters leaving the blocks after the starting gun. And it was on.

But it wasn't a flashpoint; it was a communal embrace. It was a night of protest rock 'n' roll in a pure form: angry, relevant lyrics over simple guitar-bass-drum tracks. And it was outstanding.

The miscast Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band had one of the most doomed-to-fail opening slots in memory. Apathy abounded among the Rage-ready crowd, with more people talking and texting than listening. Barely polite applause devolved into some postsong boos about a half-hour in, along with scattered shouts of "You suck!" often peppered with saltier language.

"Rocky Horror" Episode

"Glee"

The "Glee" writers are planning a "Rocky Horror Picture Show" episode, series co-creator Ryan Murphy revealed at Comic-Con.

After the show's Emmy nominated actor Chris Colfer mentioned he wanted to do "The Time Warp" in the new season, Murphy said that he and the writers were working on it.

More Season 2 story lines were revealed after a 20-minute highlight reel was shown, including more focus on the series' central characters.

Plans for the post-Super Bowl episode are in the works, but Murphy promised something big. "Nothing says Super Bowl like 'Glee,'" he joked. "We're in talks to do a huge tribute episode, but the deal hasn't closed yet so I can't say."

Monsters Invade London

Doctor Who

'Doctor Who' monsters 'invaded' the Royal Albert Hall in London on Saturday night (24.07.10).

Daleks, Cybermen, Judoon, Silurians, Weeping Angels and the Vampires of Venice all 'attacked' the historic concert venue as it played host to the 'Doctor Who Prom' - a performance of music from the last series of the BBC sci-fi show.

Fans young and old - many of whom were dressed in bow ties and tweed jackets like their hero The Doctor - gasped in astonishment as the alien invaders walked through the audience looking for their archenemy.

The concert featured music composed for the TV show by Murray Gold as well as several classical favourites, including Gustav Holst's 'The Planets - Mars' and Richard Wagner's 'The Ride of the Valkyries', and was performed by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales - who record the soundtrack for the series.

Enjoying 'Hot' Status

Betty White

It didn't take long for Betty White to figure out that "Hot in Cleveland" was sizzling.

She recently flew up to scenic Carmel, Calif., to bask in the peace and quiet of her seaside second home as she worked on a new preface for one of her books.

As she always does, the 88-year-old rented a car at the airport and decided to make a quick stop at the market on her way home.

"It took me an hour and a half to get out of the market," White told The Canadian Press in a telephone interview from Carmel.

Hospital authorities say Grammy-winning singer Al Jarreau will stay hospitalized in the French city of Marseille for three or four more days.

The Marseille Hospital Authority said Sunday that Jarreau is getting better and in good spirits but will stay in La Timone hospital for monitoring.

Jarreau's managers says he will undergo tests in Marseille and "hopes to resume his tour at the end of the coming week."

The 70-year-old Jarreau was hospitalized in the Alps on Friday after suffering breathing problems in the mountains that forced him to cancel several concerts. He was moved to Marseille by helicopter Saturday.

Russian Milestone

Jean Gregoire Sagbo

People in this Russian town used to stare at Jean Gregoire Sagbo because they had never seen a black man. Now they say they see in him something equally rare - an honest politician.

Sagbo last month became the first black to be elected to office in Russia.

In a country where racism is entrenched and often violent, Sagbo's election as one of Novozavidovo's 10 municipal councilors is a milestone. But among the town's 10,000 people, the 48-year-old from the West African country of Benin is viewed simply a Russian who cares about his hometown.

"His skin is black but he is Russian inside," said Vyacheslav Arakelov, the mayor. "The way he cares about this place, only a Russian can care."

French Nuns Sign Record Deal

Abbaye de Notre-Dame de l'Annonciation

A closed order of French nuns have signed an album deal with Universal Music, the record label announced Sunday, after a worldwide search to find the best female singers of Gregorian Chant.

The Benedictine sisters cannot leave their abbey near Avignon, in the south of France, and visitors are rarely allowed in, but the ancient chants they sing eight times a day will be available for everyone to hear from November.

"We never sought this, it came looking for us," said Placide Devillers, the Reverend Mother Abbess of the Abbaye de Notre-Dame de l'Annonciation, in a statement released by Universal Music.

The nuns were chosen after a search by the record label of more than 70 convents worldwide, sparked by the success of a 2008 album by the Cistercian Monks of Stift Heiligenkreuz in Austria.

Post Family Pictures Online

Britain's Royals

The British royal family has opened an account on photo-sharing website Flickr, Buckingham Palace announced Sunday, in their latest attempt to move with the times.

The free-to-access site will initially contain more than 600 photographs of Queen Elizabeth II on formal engagements, pictures from palace collections and portraits of the royals as young children. It will be continuously updated.

The captioned images include baby photos of the queen and her son, Prince Charles, behind-the-scenes pictures at a state banquet, and official portraits, including of King George VI's coronation in 1937.

The British monarchy website attracts up to 300,000 visitors a week, the royal YouTube channel -- launched in 2007 -- has more than 30,000 subscribers, and the royal Twitter account is followed by 40,000 users, the palace said.

Professor 'Foiled'

Scott Bur

A science professor at Gustavus Adolphus College left for a week's vacation this summer and returned to a shiny office. Very shiny. Professor Scott Bur's students had covered his office in aluminum foil. Computer screen, chairs, the ceiling, the floor - all covered in foil. Books and pens were individually wrapped, so was the phone, a ball cap, a bottle and the coffee maker.

Bur said it's a sort of tradition among his research group. He goes on vacation and when he comes back there's ... something.

That last time it happened, his office was decorated for a fairy princess. Pink fabric and bows covered everything. The pink glow from the office could been across campus.

Senior Kristen Jahr said the foil prank required 10, 200-foot rolls of foil.
