Dave Romm's Review
'Catching Up'
By Dave Romm
Previous reviews have covered some CDs but not necessarily all the CDs in a field or by an artist. Since they first appeared, I have acquired some that would have been included in the original were I to have had them. Time for some catch up.
Wally Pleasant's first three CDs are a lot of fun, and his most recent two fit nicely in the pantheon. Wally World continues his keen observation of politics with The Day Ted Nugent Killed All The Animals, continues his admiration of musicians with Bigger than Elvis, and where he had been talking about Dungeons and Dragons he's now graduated to Life and Risk in Let's Play Life. Quincy is a nifty spoken word piece on the tv show. He sings of Ty Cobb, amusement parks and has a cool samba. Hoedown gets into computers with Wreck of the Old 486 (he'll probably have to upgrade that song soon), claims that it's hard to have a protest song when things are going well in the 90s in the Folk Singer Manifesto (he'll probably have to downgrade that song now) and pays homage to another classic group with the Kingston Trio song Scotch & Soda. Wally continues to tour and continues to put out albums that are a lot of fun. Get on his mailing list to find out when he'll be in your area!
On When Pigs Fly, the group I hadn't heard of was The Neanderthal Spongecake. It turns out that they are a band from the same record company, Xemu, and have their own CD, The Side Effects of Napalm. You can listen to clips in Real Audio from the site. Not many groups will write a song about a Tapeworm, and fewer will write a GOOD song about a Tapeworm... Similarly disgusting but fun is Swamp Gas. They do two versions of Quiet Riot's Mental Health: Metal Health '98 and Slacker Health. Yes, I'm amused that the best place for the lyrics to the song are from Weird Al Yankovic's site... Mental Health is yet another song I have two covers of and not the original (three, counting the two on this album). I prefer the Slacker version, with mentions of Brent Spiner and Bob Crane and such. While it's disturbing to think that the heirs to Punk were Grunge and the heirs to Grunge are Slackers, the progression seems obvious in retrospect. If The Neanderthal Spongecake were more pissed off, they would be punk. As it is, their clean sound, understandable lyrics and solid musicianship give them an edge. Maybe I grew up. Maybe they grew up. Maybe producer Cevin Soling actually has an ear for pop. I dunno. Solid slacker rock that you'll never hear on an elevator (though I should be careful of predictions like that), but also not for everyone. I liked it, though.
As I type (7/14/02), Leonard Nimoy and several other veterans of the original series are preparing to give a talk at a Star Trek convention here in Minneapolis. Let's hope he doesn't sing. Meanwhile, let's hope Tim Russ does. Russ, who played the Vulcan Tuvak on Star Trek Voyager, has three CDs of which I have two. Kushangaza is a short, 7 song, EP (the link has clips) dedicated to his daughter. The title track is written by Russ about her, in the same way that Tiny Dancer is about Elton John's daughter, and Russ does his song Holiday Inn. Several songs have to do with religion, or at least spirituality, with We... a techno song about machines stealing your soul and Soapbox Preacher about a preacher and The Door, where a person is down but crawled up to hope. Russ packs a lot in a short CD. The epynomous Tim Russ (same link) is produced by Neil Norman, who is in charge of production at GNP/Crescendo Records. I have several of his CDs, including his Star Trek instrumentals. The man has a good ear for music, and it's helped Russ. Russ wrote several of the songs, and while none of his music has anything to do with Star Trek or even much about space or science fiction, the first cut, I Can't Imagine, starts off with "Can you imagine walkin' on Jupiter's Moons?" That's about as stfnal as he gets, though it's a solid love song with literary references. He's equally at home with jazz, Cat Stevens, Randy Newman, Bruce Hornsby and my favorite cut Love The One You're With by Stephen Stills. Frankly, I wish there were more science fiction so I could have more excuses to play them on Shockwave. Oh well. I rather liked Tuvak, though Voyager was disappointing overall, and am happy to see that Tim Russ has a life outside the Star Trek universe.
Dave Romm is a conceptual artist with a radio show, a very weird CD collection and an ever growing list of political links. He reviews things at random for obscure web sites. You can read all his music recommendations from Bartcop-E here.

OK, its a little radical even for me,
but the words just flowed on to the paper one night.

I only practiced it twice before recording with low end equipment, so quality is not there yet.
I plan on remaking it one day though the full video is available upon request, though the file is large.

Will Focus on Marriage
'The Sopranos'
Tony and Carmela Soprano's relationship will be at the heart of "The Sopranos" when the hit HBO series returns for its fourth season, series creator David Chase said.
The first year was about Tony and his mother, the second about Tony and his sister and the third about the Soprano children, Chase told the Television Critics Association on Friday.
"This season focuses on Tony and Carmela as a couple, on their marriage," said Chase, who was generally tightlipped about what will befall the neurotic mobster, his
therapist and his friends and relations starting in September.
Next season, the fifth, will be his last with the show, he said. He wouldn't predict that the series will end, noting HBO holds the rights.
James Gandolfini, who stars as Tony Soprano, made a sixth season with him on board sound unlikely.
"I started with him (Chase). I'd like to finish with him," the actor said via satellite from New York, alongside Edie Falco. She co-stars as Carmela Soprano.
"Aye, aye. Same for me," said Lorraine Bracco, who plays psychiatrist Dr. Jennifer Melfi.

'Letters from a Nut'
Jerry Seinfeld & HST
Jerry Seinfeld swears he isn't the one sending incendiary letters to Hunter S. Thompson. As we reported, Thompson has been hoaxed by someone impersonating "Letters from a Nut" author Ted L. Nancy,
who many - including Thompson - assume is really Seinfeld. The gun-toting gonzo journalist threatened the comic with "buckshot castration" if the aggravation doesn't stop. "He has definitely not
sent Thompson any letters," insists Seinfeld's rep. "They aren't coming from anyone officially involved with 'Letters from a Nut.' It's just some guy masquerading as Nancy to harass him."

Heroes Were Fonda, Stewart & Tracy
Richard Widmark
Hollywood legend Richard Widmark said Sunday he had three acting heroes in the movies -- Henry Fonda, Spencer Tracy and James Stewart.
"These are three guys I wanted to act like. They acted with utter simplicity and realism," the 87-year-old Widmark told an audience at Britain's National Film Theater.
Widmark, one of the last survivors of Hollywood's golden era, had no hesitation in picking out one of his favorite directors -- Elia
Kazan who directed him in "Panic In the Streets."
Bottom of his list was Otto Preminger -- they worked together on "Saint Joan."
"Preminger was very difficult and he always found it difficult to find a cast," he said.

Michael Jackson Story Du Jour
F. Marc Schaffel
In the days after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, F. Marc Schaffel began assembling a choir of superstars to join Michael Jackson on a fund-raising single to be sold at McDonald's. Jackson had made Schaffel executive producer.
The singer's handlers were as bewildered as everyone else about who Schaffel was - and set out to learn more.
Schaffel, it turned out, was in the gay pornography business, and Jackson's people did not want him linked to the self-described King of Pop, whose legacy already was tarnished by allegations of child sexual molestation in 1993.
So Jackson's aides quietly asked Sony Music Entertainment Inc. to bury the single.
None of this, however, was mentioned by Jackson last weekend when he blamed Sony Music for blocking the release of the charity single, "What More Can I Give," which features two dozen artists including
Ricky Martin, Mariah Carey, Gloria Estefan and Reba McEntire. Instead, Jackson accused Sony Music's chairman, Thomas D. Mottola, of being a racist who had failed not only to release the charity record
but had ruined sales of Jackson's last CD, "Invincible."
Had the singer not launched his offensive against Sony, the details behind the charity project's collapse might still be under wraps.
According to Schaffel, he and Jackson were introduced by a Beverly Hills dermatologist several years ago.

Snarky Gossip
Julia Roberts
The ex-wife of Julia Roberts' new husband has labeled the Runaway Bride as a "husband stealer" and offered her this sobering advice: He cheated on me and he'll cheat on you.
The 34-year-old leading lady shocked Hollywood when she married cameraman Danny Moder in a surprise July 4 ceremony in New Mexico.
Moder and his previous wife, 29-year-old makeup artist Vera Moder, were divorced just last month. She says she was still married to Moder when Roberts began courting him. "I'll
never be able to forgive Julia - she's a husband stealer," said the scorned first wife, according to Britain's Sun newspaper.
Vera still lives in the modest ranch-style house she once shared with Danny in the Woodland Hills neighborhood of northwest Los Angeles.
Danny left her with two mortgages, "a stack of bills" and two dogs, said a neighbor who described Roberts' new husband as a classic L.A. "surfer guy."

Speaks About New Film
Leni Riefenstahl
Only now as she approaches her 100th birthday next month does the legendary Leni Riefenstahl admit that age is slowing down the pioneering film maker who became
notorious as Adolf Hitler's favorite director.
For decades Riefenstahl has endured as a controversial, larger-than-life legend who lived life undaunted and undeterred by the passage of time. She took up scuba
diving at the age of 72 and just three years ago survived a helicopter crash in Sudan.
The director of "Triumph of the Will," a documentary on the 1934 Nuremberg Rally, will in August release her first film in half a century, an underwater documentary
taken during her many dives in exotic locations such as the Indian Ocean.
Yet in a rare interview, Riefenstahl said time is now working against her.
"I have big health problems," she said. "My spinal column is ruined and therefore I suffer heavy pain. I have to take strong pain killers which make my head kaput."
As a young woman she strove for fame as a ballet dancer and an actress and later as a film director. She sought out Nazi dictator Hitler, who
commissioned "Triumph of the Will," and "Olympia," her pioneering film record of the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
This artistic link to the Nazis, as well as rumors which she has always denied of a romantic link with Hitler, made Riefenstahl a pariah after the war.
For a whole lot more, Leni Riefenstahl

The Engagement Is Off
Ashleigh Banfield
The well-traveled anchor for MSNBC and her fiance, Drew Nederpelt, have called off their engagement, Banfield is telling colleagues.
The bespectacled 34-year-old was supposed to marry Nederpelt, a technology entrepreneur, this summer. "I knew a week after meeting him that he was the one I wanted to spend my
life with," Banfield told a Texas newspaper last year.
That feeling crystallized after Nederpelt saved her life on Sept. 11. The two were a block away from the World Trade Center when the second tower collapsed. Nederpelt kicked
down two doors of a nearby building and pulled in Banfield, as well as a New York City cop and a World Trade Center security guard, seconds before debris roared past.
A week later, when the MSNBC star was to be sent to Pakistan, Nederpelt bought her a Tiffany engagement ring. But Banfield has been overseas for most of the last 10 months, and that may have been too much.
