• Violinist Bronislav Huberman would not rehearse with conductor Pierre Monteux. Just before a rehearsal, he would send Mr. Monteux a telegram saying, "You know it, I know it, the orchestra knows it; will see you at the concert!" Actually, Mr. Huberman was correct. He, Mr. Monteux, and the orchestra had worked together so much that they knew the music they would perform together, and so the concerts always went well.
• Conductor Arturo Toscanini was passionate about music and wanted all of his musicians to put their blood into their work the way he did. At a rehearsal, he told his orchestra, "Put your blood! I put my blood!" (By the way, Arturo Toscanini enjoyed listening to music on records - while listening, he had a habit of holding his baton and conducting.)
Revenge
• Jazz musician Louis Armstrong ran into prejudice while performing in the Jim Crow South. On one concert tour, the white wife of his manager did the managing and traveled with Mr. Armstrong and his band. She arranged for the buses they traveled in, and she always ordered a bus with a soft back seat for Mr. Armstrong. Once, a bus she had ordered in Memphis arrived, but it did not have the soft seat she had ordered, so she began to argue. Somehow, the police showed up. They saw a white woman and a lot of black men, so they arrested the black men. The Memphis police chief said that one way to get out of the difficulty was for Mr. Armstrong and his band to perform on Memphis radio, and the black musicians had to agree although they had done nothing wrong. Mr. Armstrong got a measure of revenge, however, by dedicating a song to the Memphis police chief: "I'll Be Glad When You're Dead, You Rascal, You."
• These anecdotes fall into the category of dirty tricks rather than harmless pranks. Alfred Hertz was forced to use a cane when walking very far. As conductor of Wagnerian operas at the Metropolitan Opera from 1902 to 1915, he used to leave his cane at the side of the orchestra pit, then walk to the podium. Musicians who disliked him would get his cane, then grease it. And in 1968-1969, youths threw eggs at several opera-goers at Milan. Why? The opera-goers were very well dressed, and the youths wanted opera to be democratized.
Success
• Hillary Scott is one of the vocalists of Lady Antebellum (the other members are Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood), and she and the band are making a success - and she is grateful for it. On April 15, 2008, the band's self-titled debut album came out. At 3 a.m., Ms. Scott was in a Wal-Mart in Nashville, watching as the band's album was stocked in the new-releases section, in between James Otto and Mariah Carey. She even started to cry. Ms. Scott says, "I was so overcome with emotion. Not only because I had worked my whole life for this, but because of how much we'd worked since we got together. These songs were our babies. I can't tell you how overwhelming this was. I just lost it."
• Eminem got his big break because Interscope Records executive Jimmy Iovine left Eminem's EP titled The Slim Shady EP on his garage floor. Rapper and music executive Dr. Dre visited Mr. Iovine and saw the EP. He liked the cover, insisted on hearing the EP, and was impressed by what he heard. Dr. Dre says, "In my entire career in the music industry, I have never found anything from a demo tape or a CD. But when Jimmy played me this tape, I said, 'Find him. Now.'" Of course, Eminem has had enormous success as a rapper, but he says that he is prepared if he ever stops being successful in music because he can go back to his first job: washing dishes.
The Fair Deal was an ambitious set of proposals put forward by U.S. President Harry S. Truman to Congress in his January 1949 State of the Union address. More generally the term characterizes the entire domestic agenda of the Truman administration, from 1945 to 1953. It offered new proposals to continue New Deal liberalism, but with the Conservative Coalition controlling Congress, only a few of its major initiatives became law and then only if they had considerable GOP support. As Richard Neustadt concludes, the most important proposals were aid to education, universal health insurance, the Fair Employment Practices Commission, and repeal of the Taft-Hartley Act. They were all debated at length, then voted down. Nevertheless, enough smaller and less controversial items passed that liberals could claim some success.

Harry Truman. Elevated to the presidency by the 1945 death of FDR, Truman is most remembered for confirming the decision to drop two atomic bombs on Japan, backing the Marshall Plan, NATO, being elected president in 1948, and his decision to intervene in the Korean War. What Truman is not remembered for is the Fair Deal, a program that was to build on the reforms of the depression era New Deal. The Fair Deal was never implemented because Republicans regained control of congress in 1946. Sound familiar? Republicans are why we can't have nice things.

Toasty, toasty, triple digits this weekend and even maybe next week. I'm out nearly every afternoon showing property to a couple who are expecting baby #2 in Oct. I admire their pluck and determination, in addition, I've listed their current home for sale. Too bad the showings of their house don't coincide with the showings I take them on. Masks, gloves, disinfecting wipes, only 3 adults in any property at a time, and the disclosure that has to be signed & received before anyone walks into a home for sale make this market fraught with risk. And I thought the Great Recession market was bad. That was easy compared to business these days.

The original Broadway cast recording of Hamilton: An American Musical surges to a new peak on the Billboard 200 albums chart, as the set vaults from No. 14 to No. 2 in the wake of the show's Disney+ premiere on July 3. The album earned 102,000 equivalent album units (up 294 percent) in the U.S. in the week ending July 9, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. Of that sum, 32,000 are in album sales (up 592 percent).
The last cast recording to reach the top two on the chart was the original cast album of Hair, which spent 13 weeks at No. 1 in 1969.
The Hamilton album is basking in the glow of the Disney+ streaming premiere of the filmed version of the Broadway stage show, with most of the original Broadway cast. The set previously peaked at No. 3 on the July 2, 2016-dated chart, following the 2016 Tony Awards, where the show won 11 trophies, including best musical.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new July 18-dated chart (where Hamilton soars to No. 2) will be posted in full on Billboard's website on July 14.
Singer Anita White, also known as Lady A, released a statement over the weekend saying that the country group of the same name - formerly known as Lady Antebellum - "has used their wealth and influence to intimidate and bully me into submission without offering any real recompense for appropriating my name."
Says White, "It is now clear that their apologies, friendly texts, and playing on my love of God were just insincere gestures aimed at quieting me. Well, I will not be quiet any longer."
Although the group Lady A had sought an agreement in which both artists could freely use the name, the singer Lady A explains why she has resisted that, and says in her statement that "co-existence will simply not work."
"My fans used to be able to listen to my music on streaming services; now they struggle to find me," she claims. Initially, White suggested the possibility of separating their identities as "Lady A The Artist" and "Lady A The Band," but she says now that her latest proposal to the group was that she would adopt a different stage name altogether. And she acknowledges the group's claim earlier in the week that she asked for $10 million to grant them full rights to use the name, saying she was going to use it in part to re-brand herself and partly for charity.
"I asked for $5 million to compensate me for this loss, and to help me rebuild under a new name," she writes. "I also asked that they donate $5 million to a charity so that we could work together to promote racial equality. It was my impression from our communications that this would appeal to Hillary, Charles, and Dave. I guess I was wrong. Their refusal to come to an agreement that would be respectful of my work and my rights, however, has given me the clarity and the drive to not back down."
In February 2003, hard rock band Great White was involved in one of the biggest and most infamous concert tragedies in music history, when pyrotechnics set off by their tour manager ignited flammable acoustic foam in the walls and ceiling of Rhode Island nightclub the Station. The resulting blaze killed 100 people, including Great White guitarist Ty Longley, and injured 230 others. (The band's tour manager, Daniel Michael Biechele, later pleaded guilty to 100 counts of involuntary manslaughter and was given a 15-year sentence, though he only spent two years in prison; the two club-owners also received suspended sentences.)
Now Great White is catching flak for its seeming irresponsibility once again, after the current lineup played a show in North Dakota this week with zero social-distancing precautions. A headline from Spin, "Great White Wants to Be Remembered for More Concert Disasters," summed up the angry online reaction after news of the outdoor gig, which took place on July 9, was reported this weekend by Blabbermouth.
However, according to the Dickinson Press, the concert series "First on First: Dickinson Summer Nights" in Dickinson, N.D., where Great White performed the controversial show, has no official COVID-19 safety rules in place. "We do not have restrictions, believe it or not, we don't have any," event coordinator April Getz told the newspaper. "It's one of those things where if people feel comfortable coming down and mixing and mingling, that's their personal choice. We're leaving it up to everybody that chooses to attend." Video of the Dickinson gig posted by current Great White lead singer Mitch Malloy on his own YouTube page clearly shows that both his band and many concertgoers were willing to take that risk, with no masks in sight onstage or amid the packed crowd.
Interestingly, founding Great White member Jack Russell, who left the band in 2009 and now tours with his own lineup billed as "Jack Russell's Great White" - and did not participate in the July 9 North Dakota concert - recently blasted anti-maskers in an interview with the Austrian TV show Mulatschag. "There's no need to be out [in public places]. People don't take it seriously - they don't take the virus seriously. It's sad. I don't know what everybody else out there is thinking - they may think I'm full of it - but I take this very seriously," Russell stated. "It's no small wonder that when you open all these places up, 'Gee, the numbers [of coronavirus cases] rose up.' It's like, what did you think was going to happen? It's like, 'I took my mask off and I got COVID.' Well, what a big surprise that is. People just don't think. … If you want to get sick, that's great. But put your mask on for me, because I've got my mask on."
The fate of one of Alaska's most historic yet neglected structures could be decided Monday as city officials in Seward weigh whether to demolish a former Methodist boarding school where the Alaska territorial flag was first flown almost a century ago and where its Alaska Native designer lived.
Benny Benson was among the orphans and displaced children who lived at the Jesse Lee Home, many of whom were sent there after the Spanish flu devastated Alaska Native villages. Benson, a 13-year-old Aleut boy sent to the home after his mother died of the flu, won a territory-wide contest in 1927 to design the flag, which became the state flag after statehood was granted in 1959.
Benson is believed to be the only Indigenous person to design a state flag, said Dorene Lorenz, a former Seward City Council member who has been behind efforts to save the structure for years.
"I don't understand why you would rush to destroy a landmark when there's obvious interested parties wanting to present to you other options," she said.
One such group, the Alaska Association for Historic Preservation, plans to make a last-ditch effort to save the structure by making a presentation during a public hearing before Monday's scheduled vote. If successful, they will bring together those with historic preservation expertise to formulate a plan.
The White House is seeking to discredit Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's leading infectious disease expert, as President Donald Trump (R-Grifter) works to marginalize him and his dire warnings about the shortcomings in the U.S. coronavirus response.
In a remarkable broadside by the Trump administration against one of its own, a White House official told NBC News on Sunday that "several White House officials are concerned about the number of times Dr. Fauci has been wrong on things." To bolster the case, the official provided NBC News with a list of nearly a dozen past comments by Fauci earlier in the pandemic that the official said had ultimately proven erroneous.
It was a move more characteristic of a political campaign furtively disseminating "opposition research" about an opponent than of a White House struggling to contain a pandemic that has already killed more than 135,000 Americans, according to an NBC News tally.
In recent days, Fauci has deviated from Trump by disputing that the U.S. is "doing great" and faulting the decision in some states to re-open too quickly and sidestep the task force's suggested criteria for when it's safe to loosen restrictions. In one particularly alarming prediction, Fauci said he would not be surprised if the U.S. was soon adding 100,000 new cases per day- a figure that would reflect an abject failure to slow the spread.
The White House effort to cast doubt on Fauci's judgment comes as coronavirus surges nationwide, which Trump has repeatedly downplayed as a result of increased testing rather than increased infections. Florida on Sunday reported over 15,000 new cases, the most any state has reported in a single day since the pandemic began. The U.S. on Friday also surpassed 70,000 new coronavirus cases nationwide for the first time ever.
Donald Trump (R-Crooked)'s sons (R-Klingons) are planning a huge expansion of his empire in Scotland, building hundreds of private homes, retirement villas and shops beside the golf courses they already own.
The US president's family business has drawn up a masterplan for a new "world-class coastal retreat", which has already prompted anger from local people who oppose more development.
One critic warned against "allowing Scotland's reputation to be further associated with the toxic Trump brand".
The scheme, revealed by Scotland on Sunday, involves up to 225 holiday and retirement homes, as well as leisure facilities and shops, on rolling farmland next to the Trump Turnberry golf resort.
The Trump Organization has not yet submitted a planning application, but the plan handed to South Ayrshire council argues that the scheme would "generate further opportunities and growth for the local economy".
Prostitutes demonstrated in Hamburg's red light district late on Saturday evening demanding that Germany's brothels be allowed to reopen after months of closure to curb the spread of coronavirus.
With shops, restaurants and bars all open again in Germany, where prostitution is legal, sex workers say they are being singled out and deprived of their livelihoods despite not posing a greater health risk.
"The oldest profession needs your help," read a notice held up by one woman in a brothel window in the Herbertstrasse, which was flooded with red light after being dark since March.
Some protesters wore theatrical masks while one played folk songs on a violin in the street just around the corner from the Reeperbahn, famous for its nightlife.
The Association of Sex Workers, which organised the protest, says the continued closure of licensed premises is forcing some prostitutes onto the streets, which is illegal and a far more dangerous and unhygienic way of working.
The Mont Blanc glacier in the French Alps yields more and more secrets as it melts -- this time a clutch of newspapers with banner headlines from when Indira Gandhi became India's first and so far only woman prime minister in 1966.
The copies of Indian newspapers the National Herald and The Economic Times were probably aboard an Air India Boeing 707 that crashed on the mountain on January 24, 1966, claiming 177 lives.
The trove of around a dozen newspapers was found last week by Timothee Mottin, who runs a cafe-restaurant, La Cabane du Cerro, perched at an altitude of 1,350 metres (4,455 feet) near the Chamonix skiing hub.
Mottin said he was lucky to discover the papers when he did because the ice in which they were encased for nearly six decades "had probably just melted".
Once the papers have dried out, they will join a growing collection of found items from the crash that Mottin has put on display at the Cabane du Cerro.
Scientists have identified an almost-complete skeleton of a 4.8-metre (15.7-foot) long dolphin ancestor that lived in what is now South Carolina during the Oligocene epoch around 25 million years ago.
This 'dolphin' was the first known echolocating apex predator: as well as its large size, it would've had large, tusk-like teeth, and appears to have been capable of feeding and hunting at high speeds like an orca.
The skeleton was found in the 1990s but initially misclassified, and is the first nearly complete Ankylorhiza tiedemani skeleton to be analysed - previously the creature could only be studied from a partial rostrum - or snout - fossil, but now the cetacean can be much more fully understood.
One of the main revelations is that many aspects of the skeleton - the skull and tail shape, the short upper arm bone in the flipper, the shape of the teeth - suggest that the two modern types of whales, toothed and baleen, evolved many of the same features in parallel independently of each other, rather than inheriting them from the same ancestor as previously thought.
