Paul Krugman: On The Political Economy Of Permanent Stagnation (New York Times)
I guess what I'm saying is that I worry that a more or less permanent depression could end up simply becoming accepted as the way things are, that we could suffer endless, gratuitous suffering, yet the political and policy elite would feel no need to change its ways.
Christian Lemp: What Is It Like to Be a Chef at an Expensive Restaurant? (Slate)
The standards for freshness and quality are non-negotiable. All mis en place was made fresh, with fresh ingredients every other day, no questions asked. Still tastes fine? Don't care-make it fresh. That is the attitude and the philosophy that drives the ship in a restaurant like that.

Archy and Mehitabel (styled as archy and mehitabel) is the title of a series of newspaper columns written by Don Marquis beginning in 1916. Written as fictional social commentary and intended as a space-filler to allow Marquis to meet the challenge of writing a daily newspaper column six days a week, archy and mehitabel is Marquis' most famous work. Collections of these stories are still sold in print today. The published editions of these stories were originally illustrated by George Herriman, the creator and illustrator of Krazy Kat.
In 1916, Marquis introduced Archy, a fictional cockroach, into his daily newspaper column at The New York Evening Sun. Archy (whose name was always written in lower case in the book titles, but was upper case when Marquis would write about him in narrative form) was a cockroach who had been a free verse poet in a previous life, and took to writing stories and poems on an old typewriter at the newspaper office when everyone in the building had left. Archy would climb up onto the typewriter and hurl himself at the keys, laboriously typing out stories of the daily challenges and travails of a cockroach. Archy's best friend was Mehitabel, an alley cat. The two of them shared a series of day-to-day adventures that made satiric commentary on daily life in the city during the 1910s and 1920s.

3D printing is turning up in all sorts of places these days, and recently, it's been gaining traction in the art world, with one artist using the printers to create giant paintings with loads of texture.
"My paintings address both the visual perception and the tactile," said Ioan Florea, whose artwork is currently on display in Indiana. When people see Florea's paintings, their first reaction is to get close and touch them, he added.
Florea first uses 3D printing to build prototypes for the larger shapes in his paintings. To create the scaled-up versions of these 3D shapes, which are enlarged 20 to 30 times, he cures the resins using heat (by contrast, 3D printing often involves curing resins using ultraviolet light). The resin and pigment are like the paint, and all the shapes are embedded in it, Florea said. Then, he uses transfer techniques to attach the shapes to a canvas.
Florea originally hails from Transylvania, not far from Dracula's castle. As a child, he would collect animal bones in the woods and draw them. He was fascinated with their 3D shapes, he said. Later, he arranged animal vertebrae into an abstract alphabet. He tried making them with paint, experimenting with many techniques to get the texture he wanted on a canvas. He was waiting for the right technique, and then along came 3D printers, he said.

A pair of nail clippers, a hairbrush and a queen-sized bed are among the items up for auction that once belonged to Halle Berry and her Quebec ex-boyfriend.
Berry, one of Hollywood's biggest stars, owned a condo in Old Montreal and a country place in the Laurentians region north of the city.
But hundreds of items are available at a Montreal auction after she broke up with model Gabriel Aubry.
There are more than 400 lots listed, ranging in scope from an antique sofa and zebra skin rug to an old tennis racket and hair clip.
Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf married actress Elisha Cuthbert at a private ceremony on Saturday.
Phaneuf, 28, and Cuthbert, 30, have been together since 2008 when the defenceman was a member of the Calgary Flames.
Cuthbert is best known for her roles on the children's program "Popular Mechanics for Kids" and the television drama "24."
The ceremony took place at St. James Catholic Church in Summerfield, P.E.I., while the reception was held at the couple's summer residence in New London.
The couple drove away from the ceremony in a vintage Camaro SS that Cuthbert gave to Phaneuf as a wedding gift.

The marriage of cola and wine may sound positively icky to many North Americans, but our finer European friends across the pond are no stranger to this concoction.
The world's first commercially produced cola-flavoured wine is being sold in France. Rouge Sucette is made of 75 per cent from grapes, and the rest from water, sugar and cola flavouring. With only 9 per cent alcohol, it's a gentleman's drink.
Rouge Sucette is inspired by a common cocktail for the young French and Spanish people of Basque-country called 'kalimotxo', a dead simple mix of equal parts wine and cola, sometimes with a splash of lemon. It's been around since the 1970s and is often sold in bars. Its popularity has even spread to Romania, Czech Republic, Hungary and Japan all the while taking on different names.
Pauline Lacombe, the marketing director for Hausmann Famille, explains that Rouge Sucette translated into English means "red lollipop" and that preliminary taste tests indicate a keen interest from Asian countries.
Microsoft will pull the plug on MSN TV, the service based on the early Internet-device startup WebTV it bought 16 years ago, effective Sept. 30.
It will surely surprise some that the Son of WebTV was still extant. In recent years, the company has focused on the Xbox videogame console as its connected-TV platform for delivering entertainment to the living room. Meanwhile, the Redmond giant had stopped actively marketing the MSN TV device and service, which ossified into an artifact from an earlier era.
In the mid-1990?s, WebTV created a device to provide web and email via dial-up modem to people who didn't have a personal computer. Microsoft bought the startup in a deal worth $425 million before changing the name of the product to MSN TV. In 2004, the company launched MSN TV 2, which had a faster processor and enhanced features including broadband connectivity, but the service - and similar "Web-on-TV" concepts - never achieved significant traction.
Customers are free to keep the MSN TV set-top (as an objet d'art… or doorstop). For those who wish to discard it, Microsoft recommends using a local electronics recycler.

Big energy companies have been trying for five years to tap the riches of the Marcellus Shale in southern New York, promising thousands of new jobs, economic salvation for a depressed region, and a cheap, abundant, clean-burning source of fuel close to power-hungry cities. But for all its political clout and financial prowess, the industry hasn't been able to get its foot in the door.
One reason: Folks like Sue Rapp and Vera Scroggins are standing in the way.
Rapp, a family counselor in the Broome County town of Vestal, in the prime shale gas region near the Pennsylvania border, is intense and unrelenting in pressing her petitions. Scroggins - a retiree and grandmother who lives across the border in hilly northwestern Pennsylvania, where intensive gas development has been going on for five years - is gleefully confrontational. She happily posts videos of her skirmishes.
The anti-fracking movement has inspired a legion of people like Rapp and Scroggins- idiosyncratic true believers, many of them middle-aged women, who have made it the central mission of their lives to stop gas drilling using high-volume hydraulic fracturing in the Marcellus region that underlies southern New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia.
They are not necessarily popular; they have been shunned by former friends who support drilling and the economic benefits it brings. Their opponents accuse them of distorting the truth about fracking's impacts by insisting that their communities and surrounding countryside will be transformed into a polluted industrial wasteland if natural gas interests have their way.

Prominent art collector Charles Saatchi said Sunday he is divorcing his celebrity chef wife Nigella Lawson because she did not publicly defend his reputation after images emerged of him grasping her throat in a posh London restaurant.
Tabloid newspapers last month published photos of the incident, which Saatchi described as a "playful tiff" during an intense debate about the couple's children.
The 70-year-old Saatchi was given a police "caution" after admitting assault.
He told Britain's Mail on Sunday newspaper that he was "sorry" to announce he will be divorcing Lawson, adding that they have become "estranged" and drifted apart over the past year.

Israel's cabinet approved a draft law on Sunday to abolish wholesale exemptions from military duty granted to Jewish seminary students, stoking ultra-Orthodox anger over the break with tradition.
Many Israelis have long bridled over state privileges handed to the conservative believers or "Haredim" - a Hebrew term meaning "those who tremble before God".
Most Israeli men and women are called up for military service for up to three years when they turn 18, and often see active service in the occupied West Bank and other flashpoints.
But ultra-Orthodox men studying in seminaries, religious women and Arab citizens of Israel have been exempted since the Jewish state was formed in 1948.
Under the proposed law, only 1,800 of those students, designated "outstanding biblical scholars", would get an exemption, out of the estimated 8,000 who become eligible for the draft every year.
The minions of "Despicable Me 2" ran away with the July 4th box office, leaving the Johnny Depp Western "The Lone Ranger" in the dust.
According to studio estimates Sunday, the Universal animated sequel took in $82.5 million over the weekend and $142.1 million across the five-day holiday window. Gore Verbinski's reimagining of the iconic lawman bombed for the Walt Disney Co., opening with just $29.4 million over the weekend, and a disappointing $48.9 million since Wednesday.
The trouncing for Disney was especially painful because of the high cost of "The Lone Ranger," which reportedly cost at least $225 million to make. Made by the same team that created the lucrative Disney franchise "Pirates of the Caribbean" (the four film series that grossed $3.7 billion worldwide) the Western drew bad reviews and failed to capture the attention of younger moviegoers.
While critics skewered the film, it did earn a B+ CinemaScore grade from moviegoers. But "The Lone Ranger" is nevertheless likely to be a sizeable write-down for Disney and could impact the company's stock price when markets reopen Monday.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released on Monday.
1. "Despicable Me 2," $82.5 million. ($88.8 million international).
2. "The Lone Ranger," $29.4 million ($24.3 million international).
3. "The Heat," $25 million ($4.7 million international).
4. "Monsters University," $19.6 million ($29.5 million international).

6. "White House Down," $13.5 million ($6.8 million international).
7. "Man of Steel," $11.4 million ($21.3 million international).
8. "Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain," $10.1 million.
9. "This Is the End," $5.8 million ($900,000 international).
10. "Now You See Me," $2.8 million ($8.5 million international).
