• René Soames studied with voice teacher Gustave Garcia for 18 months, after which time Mr. Garcia advised him to go into business since he would never be a singer. Mr. Soames was upset by this verdict and wondered why Mr. Garcia had waited to tell him that until after he had spent all his savings on voice lessons. Fortunately, Mr. Soames kept on singing and made a career for himself singing Elizabethan music.
• Gary Valentine, a founding member of Blondie, became infatuated with the Beatles - like millions of other kids - after seeing them in 1964 on The Ed Sullivan Show. In the 4th grade, for the last half-hour on Fridays his teacher allowed Gary and other students to pretend to play cardboard cutouts of guitars as they lip-synced to the latest British Invasion single.
• Even as a young teenager, Victoria de los Angeles sang well. Her father worked at the University of Barcelona, where young Victoria would go into the classrooms after class had let out and sing. Sometimes, the professors chased her out because their students preferred to listen to her than do their own work.
• When Giulio Gatti-Casazza was manager of the Metropolitan Opera, he was asked, "Who is a good voice teacher?" He replied, "That is an easy question. It is that teacher who is lucky enough to have an exceptional pupil."
Fame
• Danielle Arsenault is the hot chick in the Detroit band Crud - she calls herself the *ss of the band. Crud gleefully takes advantage of her hotness - with her permission - by using her image on its T-shirts and posters. She calls the band's fans "h*rny," which frontman Vinnie Dombroski agrees is the fans' most defining characteristic. Often, male fans will push their girlfriends onstage so that Ms. Arsenault can spank or do other things to them. Perhaps the band will become more than regionally famous one day, and perhaps it will bring in a bigger income than it did in early 2008. The income would be welcome, but excessive fame can be a problem. Ms. Arsenault says, "I like the level we're at right now because I don't have to work too hard. But I wouldn't mind working a little bit harder if it meant making a lot more." She adds, however, "I don't want to not be able to go out of the house without makeup. I want to be able to go to the grocery store with a hangover and not get my picture taken."
• How do you know when you're a singer-songwriter who is beginning to make it? Having a song played on the TV series Grey's Anatomy is one way, and Australian singer-songwriter Missy Higgins has done that. Being chased by the paparazzi is another, but in Australia you've got to be really famous to be chased by the paparazzi and Ms. Higgins hadn't become that famous as of April 2008. However, her songs are sung on Australia's version of American Idol, and her songs are sung in Australian karaoke bars. In addition - and this is fabulous - she says, "I actually saw myself in a crossword in Australia, and I thought that's amazing - it doesn't get any better."
• Rock 'n' roll pioneer Bo Diddley was never as famous as many other rock 'n' roll pioneers. In part, this was a result of a bad decision he made in 1955, when he made his one-and-only appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, a TV show that created stars long before American Idol. Mr. Sullivan wanted Bo Diddley to play a big hit by Tennessee Ernie Ford, "Sixteen Tons." Mr. Diddley agreed, but when the cameras started broadcasting him on the show - live - he played the song "Bo Diddley" instead. Mr. Sullivan was not happy, and he never invited Mr. Diddley on his show again.
"Lofsöngur" ("Hymn"), also known as "Ó Guð vors lands" ("O, God of Our Land"), is the national anthem of Iceland. Sveinbjörn Sveinbjörnsson composed the music, while the lyrics were authored by Matthías Jochumsson. This was adopted as the national anthem in 1944, when the country voted to end its personal union with Denmark and become a republic.
It is notorious for being extremely challenging to sing and its strong religious theme has been the source of dispute in contemporary Iceland.
Although the Icelandic national anthem consists of three stanzas, only the first one is sung on a regular basis. It is notorious for being extremely challenging to sing, due to its large vocal range of high and low registers-spanning a minor fourteenth. "Lofsöngur" has been described as a Christian hymn to God with strong religious themes. Thus, its suitability as the national anthem in Iceland's increasingly secular society of the present-day has been challenged, not withstanding the fact that the country still maintains an official religion in the form of the Church of Iceland. Some have suggested replacing it with a non-religious song that is more all-encompassing.

Although it cooled off quite a bit yesterday, the wind blew hard from the southwest. Midafternoon a fire broke out about 10 mi. NW of here, and went from 50 to 500 acres in a matter of minutes. Even now, about 21 hrs. after it started, it's still only 50% contained. Some buildings burned and people are evacuated, no loss of life so far, but it's still early June, and we're already ablaze. It's gonna be a looooooong season.

Prince often played special concerts on June 7, his birthday - the most elaborate was probably a full-scale show at Detroit's Cobo Arena in 1986 - and since his death in 2016, has observed the date with special events (like Spike Lee's block party in Brooklyn in 2017) or releases (like last year's "Originals" album).
For a number of reasons, 2020 is different, not least because of the nationwide protests against police violence that have spiraled in the wake of George Floyd's death at the hands of law-enforcement officers in Prince's beloved hometown of Minneapolis.
Rather than an elaborate release or event, on his 62nd birthday, Prince's estate has shared a handwritten note from the artist about intolerance, as well as a remembrance of his 2015 concert and song commemorating Freddie Gray's death at the hands of Baltimore police.
"Prince dedicated his life to speaking out against injustice, advocating for black excellence, and spreading the message of 'Love 4 One Another,'" the caption reads. "In this note that he kept in his personal archives, he wrote a message that still resonates today. 'Nothing more ugly in the whole wide world than INTOLERANCE (between) Black, white, red, yellow, boy or girl. INTOLERANCE.'"
A bronze chest filled with gold, jewels, and other valuables worth more than $1 million and hidden a decade ago somewhere in the Rocky Mountain wilderness has been found, according to a famed art and antiquities collector who created the treasure hunt.
Forrest Fenn, 89, told the Santa Fe New Mexican on Sunday that a man who did not want his name released - but was from "back East" - located the chest a few days ago and the discovery was confirmed by a photograph the man sent him.
Fenn posted clues to the treasure's whereabouts online and in a 24-line poem that was published in his 2010 autobiography "The Thrill of the Chase."
Hundreds of thousands have hunted in vain across remote corners of the U.S. West for the bronze chest believed to be filled with gold coins, jewelry and other valuable items. Many quit their jobs to dedicate themselves to the search and others depleted their life savings. At least four people died searching for it.
Fenn, who lives in Santa Fe, said he packed and repacked his treasure chest for more than a decade, sprinkling in gold dust and adding hundreds of rare gold coins and gold nuggets. Pre-Columbian animal figures went in, along with prehistoric "mirrors" of hammered gold, ancient Chinese faces carved from jade and antique jewelry with rubies and emeralds.
Second City CEO Andrew Alexander is leaving the improv group after accusations of institutional racism were made by former performers, saying that he "failed to create an anti-racist environment wherein artists of color might thrive."
Alexander is also the 50% co-owner of Second City. He announced he was stepping down in a letter posted on the Second City website, admitted he failed to create an "anti-racist environment."
Actor Dewayne Perkins claimed Second City created obstacles for performers of color. As a counter to that, Alexander said in his letter that the next executive director of Second City will be a person of color.
In the letter of resignation, Alexander wrote that "it is not enough to not be a racist; you must be anti-racist. The Second City cannot begin to call itself anti-racist. That is one of the great failures of my life."
Alexander produced the TV series "SCTV." "Over the years, Second City has never shied away from talking about oppression. On stage, we have always been on the right side of the issue, and of that, I am very proud," he wrote. "On stage, we dealt with the absurdity of the equal opportunity narrative that society uses to oppress BIPOC. We dealt with the double standard that rationalizes violence against people of color. We dealt with the cynicism of the liberal pact with capitalism. Offstage, it's been a different story."
It's official! The line of severe thunderstorms that crossed the entire state of Colorado on Saturday met the criteria to be classified as a derecho, which is a long-lived line of severe thunderstorms that produces consistent wind damage along its path.
According to the American Meteorological Society a derecho must be at least 60 miles wide and travel for a distance of roughly 400 miles or longer. Although some in the field of meteorology say the distance only needs to be around 250 miles or greater.
A derecho west of the Rocky Mountains is an extremely rare event. In fact this could be the first in recorded history to form west of the Rockies and cross the Continental Divide. Typically a derecho in the United States would be found east of the Rocky Mountains.
Numerous trees and power lines were downed by the hurricane force wind gusts as they moved through Colorado. A gust at the top of Winter Park Ski Area approached the strength of a Category 3 hurricane.
Saturday's event started in southeast Utah during the mid-morning hours and ended early Sunday morning in the eastern part of North and South Dakota. At times some of the thunderstorms in western Colorado were traveling between 100-120 miles per hour.
A judge has stopped the federal government from rescinding its reservation designation for a Native American tribe's land in Massachusetts, ordering the Interior Department to review the matter and issue new findings.
U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman in Washington, D.C., granted a summary judgment on behalf of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe on Friday, concluding the Interior Department's actions were "arbitrary, capricious, an abuse of discretion, and contrary to law."
Cedric Cromwell, the tribe's chairman, said the judge "righted what would have been a terrible and historic injustice."
The Cape Cod-based tribe, which traces its ancestry to the Native Americans that shared a fall harvest meal with the Pilgrims in 1621, gained federal recognition in 2007. It has more than 300 acres in the town of Mashpee and in Taunton near the Rhode Island state line and has broken ground on a $1 billion resort and casino.
The tribe learned in late March that the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs would be rescinding the reservation designation and removing the land from federal trust. At the time, Cromwell called it a "sucker punch" undertaken in the middle of a pandemic.
As police officers across the country have tear-gassed crowds in attempts to disperse protesters, claims have surfaced on social media that tear gas is a chemical weapon banned in war but legal for law enforcement purposes.
A Facebook post shared on June 2 shows a screenshot of a tweet from Robert Reich - an economist and the secretary of Labor under President Bill Clinton - that says, "Your reminder that tear gas is a chemical weapon banned in war."
The screenshot also shows a user replying to the tweet saying, "Imagine using a chemical weapon that targets the lungs against your own citizens who are exercising their 1st Amendment rights during a Global Pandemic of a virus that targets the lungs!"
Instagram users also shared their frustration about tear gas being banned in war claiming that the use of tear gas and other chemical weapons are banned in warfare under the Geneva Protocol of 1925.
We rate the claim that tear gas is banned in war but legal for law enforcement purposes as TRUE based on our research. Findings show that the Chemical Weapon Convention outlawed the use of riot control agents in warfare and it went into effect in 1997. The 1925 Geneva Protocol also prohibited the use of poisonous gases in war.
President Donald Trump (R-Manbaby) on Friday sent exactly 200 tweets and retweets - the most so far during his presidency - amid ongoing nationwide protests about police brutality and not long after he issued an executive order to regulate the social network after it fact-checked his posts.
According to Factba.se, which tracks the president's usage of Twitter, the volume of the president's tweets Friday was the highest it had ever been - both before and during his presidency. The president had sent 468 tweets as of Friday night for the week - the most ever in one week during his presidency, according to Factba.se.
He also tweeted 74 times between 8 and 9 a.m. Friday, which marked the all-time highest volume of tweets from the president in a single hour. The president, who has frequently used Twitter as a messaging tool during his presidency, has ramped up his usage of the platform this year amid his re-election, according to Factba.se.
The tweets Friday broke his previous record of 142 tweets and retweets in a single day, which he sent on January 23 during his impeachment trial in the Senate. In 2017, then-White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said that the president's tweets constituted official statements, according to CNN.
A doughnut shop in Rhode Island said it will no longer offer discounts to police or military personnel, citing frustrations over racism and injustice.
The owners of Allie's Donuts in Kingstown shared the news in an Instagram story Saturday after seeing a news report about a Providence firefighter who said he was racially profiled by police while in uniform, according to the post.
"This is an example of terrible job performance," the post said. "If you were an athlete you would be cut from your team. If you were our employee we would fire you immediately. But you are a police officer."
The shop went on to say that it would be ending its discounts for police and military personnel.
"We're fed up," the post said. "Until local police takes action to solve problems with racism & injustice, @alliesdonuts will choose to stand with the people of our great state. We will no longer offer military or police discounts."
Two newly discovered super-eruptions have been found hidden in the geological history of Yellowstone National Park - including one that ranks in the fifth biggest volcanic eruption of all time.
The good news is that these additions suggest activity at the magma-fuelled hotspot is actually on the wane, according to a new study.
That's despite the recent eruption clusters detected around the Yellowstone Caldera volcanic hollow.
The two new-found events have been named the McMullen Creek eruption (occurring about 8.99 million years ago) and the Grey's Landing eruption (occurring about 8.72 million years ago), and they significantly adjust Yellowstone's long-term volcanic timeline - and appear to show that huge eruptions are now occurring way less frequently than they once did.
In other words, what had been seen as many smaller eruptions were in fact two giant ones.
