Anecdotes

Children

• Kimya Dawson became famous after several of her songs appeared in the hit 2007 movie Juno. After the movie made her famous, she started creating an album titled Alphabutt for children. Her humor, as shown when she was a member of the anti-folk duo The Moldy Peaches with Adam Green, can be crude and can involve bad language. She thinks that all of her albums are "child-appropriate, but not all parents agree - a lot of kids who like my stuff say, 'I wanted to take your CD to show and tell, but my teacher doesn't like it when you say 'f**king c*ck.'" For that reason, she felt obliged to make what she calls "a show-and-tell-friendly album." In 2008, her daughter was two years old, and Ms. Dawson was thinking of starting a curfew-friendly tour: "I've been thinking about doing a tour called 'The Nine O' Clock Curfew Tour,' where I don't play any shows that end after nine. This staying up 'til 11 stuff is bullsh*t."

• Laurie Anderson was forced to study violin when she was a child - it was not a pleasant experience. She says, "I had a teacher who said, 'If you don't put your fingers in the right place, I am going to put nails where they [your fingers] shouldn't be and you'll prick yourself.'" Ms. Anderson, of course, composed and recorded "O Superman," figuring that 100 copies of the song would be enough to meet what she thought would be a limited demand. However, British deejay John Peel played it on his radio show, and suddenly demand skyrocketed. She says, "One day, I got a call from London with an order for 20,000 copies of the single, immediately followed by another 20,000 by the end of the week. I looked at the cardboard box of records, which had almost run out, and said, 'Listen, can I just call you back?'"

• Long ago, singer/songwriter Billy Bragg made a music video for a song called "The Boy Done Good" with some of his nieces and nephews. During a visit, a niece mentioned the video, and Billy's son, who was a toddler when the video was made, wanted to see it. So Billy spent a week looking everywhere in his home for the video, including getting out a ladder so he could look in the attic. Finally, he gave up and telephoned his niece to ask, "Where did you see the video? 'Cause I can't find it anywhere. Have you got a copy?" She replied, "Duh, Uncle Bill, it's on YouTube." Perhaps unnecessarily, Billy says, "I felt such an idiot, such an old guy."

• For one of his televised Young People's Concerts, conductor Leonard Bernstein presented Benjamin Britton's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra. He needed a child to narrate, and he settled on the young son of his friend Schuyler Chapin: Henry. Henry did a fine job, and he grew up and taught music to young children at a school in New York. Once, he showed his pupils the Young People's Concert that he had narrated. The children liked the program, but one girl asked, "Who was that nerdy kid who spoke the words?" Henry confessed that he had been the nerdy kid, and the children applauded him.

• When Beyoncé and fellow Destiny's Child member Kelly Rowland first heard a song of theirs - "No, No, No" - on the radio in her car, they stopped the car, jumped out of it, and started singing the song and running around the car. When Beyoncé's younger sister, Solange, saw them, she was shocked at first. But when she was close enough to hear the song, she joined them in running around the car. Beyoncé remembers, "She dropped her bag and books and started running around the car, too. It was a really cool experience."

Trivia Question from Yesterday

Formerly known as Dahomey, what is the name of this West Africa nation today?

       Dahomey                                                      Source

Benin, officially the Republic of Benin (French: République du Bénin) and formerly known as Dahomey, is a country in West Africa. It is bordered by Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east, Burkina Faso to the north-west, and Niger to the north-east. The majority of its population lives on the small southern coastline of the Bight of Benin, part of the Gulf of Guinea in the northernmost tropical portion of the Atlantic Ocean. The capital of Benin is Porto-Novo, but the seat of government is in Cotonou, the country's largest city and economic capital. Benin covers an area of 114,763 square kilometres (44,310 sq mi) and its population in 2018 was estimated to be approximately 11.49 million. Benin is a tropical nation, highly dependent on agriculture, and is a large exporter of cotton and palm oil. Substantial employment and income arise from subsistence farming.

The official language of Benin is French, with several indigenous languages such as Fon, Bariba, Yoruba and Dendi also being commonly spoken. The largest religious group in Benin is Roman Catholicism, followed closely by Islam, Vodun (commonly referred to as Voodoo outside the country) and Protestantism. Benin is a member of the United Nations, the African Union, the Economic Community of West African States, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone, La Francophonie, the Community of Sahel-Saharan States, the African Petroleum Producers Association and the Niger Basin Authority.

Little is known of Benin's early history. From the 17th to the 19th century, the main political entities in the area were the Kingdom of Dahomey, along with the city-state of Porto-Novo, and a large area with many different nations to the north. This region was referred to as the Slave Coast from as early as the 17th century due to the large number of enslaved people who were shipped to the New World during the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. After enslavement was abolished, France took over the country and renamed it French Dahomey. In 1960, Dahomey gained full independence from France. The sovereign state has had a tumultuous history since then, with many different democratic governments, military coups, and military governments. A Marxist-Leninist state called the People's Republic of Benin existed between 1975 and 1990. In 1991, it was replaced by the current multi-party Republic of Benin.        Source

Dave responded:
Benin. For centuries Dahomey had a strong military tradition and often raided their neighbors for loot and captives. They had a tradition of ritually executing their captives, but the rulers found Portuguese traders were willing to buy their captives. Many of the captives were sold and transported across the Atlantic as slaves in the new world. That slave trade continued until 1885, with the last slaves transported to Brazil (which didn't abolish slavery until 1888, the last western nation to do so). In 1892, Dahomey became a French colony, then was declared independent in 1960. In 1974 the name of the nation was changed to the People's Republic of Benin by its Marxist dictator, and is now called Republic of Benin. One of the smaller nations in the vast continent of Africa, Benin is about the size of Pennsylvania.

Donations

Minnesota Freedom Fund

Following the death of George Floyd, many celebrities have come together to raise money for the Minnesota Freedom Fund and match donations made by others.

All across social media, people have started making donations to the Minnesota Freedom Fund, an organization that provides funds to protestors who have been arrested and need to post bail.

After President Trump tweeted about it being "MAGA Night" at the White House after protestors gathered outside on Friday, Chrissy Teigen announced she would donate $100,000 to bail people out. She later upped her commitment to $200,000.

"In celebration of whatever the f- maga night is, I am committed to donating $100,000 to the bail outs of protestors across the country," she wrote.

The Safdie brothers and Seth Rogen also started a chain of donations to the Minnesota Freedom Fund, prompting Steve Carell, Ben Schwartz and Don Cheadle to match their contributions.

Reveals Story

Peter Jackson

The fellowship returned after 20 years on Sunday, when Josh Gad hosted Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Ian McKellen, and more of the Lord of the Rings team for a Zoom reunion.

They were joined by castmates Sean Astin, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, Viggo Mortensen, John Rhys-Davies, Sean Bean, Liv Tyler, Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving, Miranda Otto, and Karl Urban. Director Peter Jackson, composer Howard Shore, and co-writer Philippa Boyens were also featured in the event, which supported No Kid Hungry, a charity geared toward ending childhood hunger.

During the 50-minute chat, Jackson and the actors, many of whom appeared throughout the trilogy - The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002), and The Return of the King (2003) - revealed some tantalizing behind-the-scenes secrets.

For example, the filmmaker discussed the making of Boromir's (Bean) famous "One does not simply walk into Mordor" line that became a popular meme. Jackson said he wrote the iconic speech the day before the scene was filmed, and that Bean needed help remembering it.

"What Sean did, which I thought was really clever, is he got a print-out of the speech taped to his knee," Jackson said. "If you watch the scene now, you'll see every time that Sean has to check his script."

Shares Video

John Cusack

John Cusack was one of the many protesters across the nation who encountered forceful police pushback Saturday night when situations got out of control in several major cities.

The actor took multiple pictures and video which he shared on social media while out protesting in Chicago over the death of George Floyd.

"It's nasty as fuck out there, everyone is on edge, things burning- open looting - Magnificent Mile- and all over," the actor and Illinois native said via Twitter.

At one point, while on his bike, Cusack said police officers came at him with batons. In the video, someone assumed to be an officer, can be heard yelling "Get the fuck out of here!" along with what sounds like a baton striking Cusack's bike multiple times.

In a follow-up tweet with video, he wrote, "These were some of the peace officers - who gently tuned up my bike with their batons."

To Go Dark As Tribute

ViacomCBS

In an internal memo, ViacomCBS President of Entertainment and Youth Brands Chris McCarthy announced that all entertainment and youth brands and platforms will be going dark for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, which marks the time in which George Floyd was killed. The time will not only serve as a tribute to Floyd but as a tribute to all those who have been victims of racism including Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and countless others.

ViacomCBS also went dark in 2018 for 17 minutes in solidarity with the National School Walkout to honor the 17 students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida who killed.

ViacomCBSIn addition to the killings, McCarthy addresses the everyday inequality in the community and how the pandemic disproportionately impacts communities of color. He went on to talk about what ViacomCBS is doing as a call to action to help support the communities including Black Out Tuesday where they will not hold any meeting or conduct any business in order to stand in solidarity with their Black colleagues.

Camera Crew Attacked

Reuters

Two members of a Reuters TV crew were hit by rubber bullets and a photographer's camera was smashed in Minneapolis on Saturday night as attacks against journalists covering civil unrest in U.S. cities intensified.

Footage taken by cameraman Julio-Cesar Chavez showed a police officer aiming directly at him as police fired rubber bullets, pepper spray and tear gas to disperse about 500 protesters in the southwest of the city shortly after the 8 p.m. curfew.

"A police officer that I'm filming turns around points his rubber-bullet rifle straight at me," said Chavez.

Minutes later, Chavez and Reuters security advisor Rodney Seward were struck by rubber bullets as they took cover at a nearby gas station.

On footage captured as they ran for safety, several shots are heard ringing out and Seward yells, "I've been hit in the face by a rubber bullet."

Details Encounter

Halsey

Halsey took to social media Saturday to detail her experience taking part in a George Floyd protest in Los Angeles, with the singer revealing that she sustained a bruise after being hit by a rubber bullet.

"A true patriot is someone who will rebel against the government if it becomes necessary, to protect the greater good of their fellow citizens. We are patriots," Halsey tweeted Saturday.

The singer, who attended the Black Lives Matter rally in Los Angeles Saturday with Yungblud, also livestreamed the protest's altercation with police officers.

"Fired rubber bullets at us. We did not breach the line. Hands were up. Unmoving. And they gassed and fired," Halsey tweeted.

The singer added, "I WAS NOT ARRESTED. Im safe. There were ppl I had to get to safety as many of them have VISAs. Myself + many of my peers were shot, gassed + antagonized. The frontline was calm + did not provoke. BUT MANY ARE NOT SAFE + MANY ARE IN CUSTODY."

Cadets Test Positive

West Point

The Army has determined 16 West Point cadets have tested positive for COVID-19 after returning to the campus for a commencement address by President Trump (R-Draft Dodger) scheduled for June 13, according to sources on Capitol Hill.

The affected cadets, a fraction of the 850 who have returned to the campus since spring break in March, are receiving treatment but are not showing symptoms of the disease, Army Lt. Gen. Darryl Williams, the West Point superintendent, said in an interview.

Williams, who declined to specify the number of cadets affected, said screening and safety procedures will allow the ceremony to be held safely.

Sources on Capitol Hill, with access to information but not authorized to speak publicly, said that of the 16 affected cadets, 14 had tested positive for the antibody that indicates they had contracted the virus, recovered and had developed anti-bodies. In addition, 71 of the more than 5,000 faculty, staff and civilians at West Point have tested positive for COVID-19 since March. All but four civilians have recovered, and they are living off the post.

Critics have called Trump's decision to attend West Point graduation a political stunt that endangers the health of cadets and those with whom they have had contact on their return to campus.

Rio Tinto Sorry

Aboriginal Caves

Mining giant Rio Tinto has apologised for blowing up 46,000-year-old Aboriginal caves in Western Australia dating back to the last Ice Age.

The Juukan Gorge caves, in the Pilbara region, were destroyed last Sunday as Rio Tinto expanded an iron ore project agreed with the authorities.

Artefacts found there include a belt made from human hair, analysis of which showed a direct link going back 4,000 years between the PKKP and the prehistoric cave-dwellers.

Besides iron ore, the Anglo-Australian giant has many mining interests in Australia, including bauxite for aluminium, diamonds and uranium.

Damaged In Deadly Thunderstorm

Taj Mahal

A deadly thunderstorm that rolled across parts of northern India damaged sections of the Taj Mahal complex, including the main gate and a railing running below its five lofty domes, officials said Sunday.

One of the New Seven Wonders of the World, India's top tourist attraction has been shut since mid-March as part of measures to try and combat the coronavirus pandemic.

"One sandstone railing which was a part of the original structure has been damaged," Superintending Archaeologist of the Archaeological Survey of India, Vasant Kumar Swarnkar, told AFP.

"One marble railing which was a later addition, a false ceiling in the tourist holding area and the base stone of the main gate has also been damaged."

He added there was no damage to the main structure of the monument to love -- built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died giving birth in 1631.
