Trivia Question from Yesterday

Edouard Manet's Battle of the Keersarge and the Alabama
On June 19, 1864, during the American Civil War, there was a single-ship action between a United States Navy warship, USS Kearsarge, and a Confederate States Navy warship, CSS Alabama. Where was this battle fought?

       Cherbourg, France                                                      Source

The Battle of Cherbourg, or sometimes the Battle off Cherbourg or the Sinking of CSS Alabama, was a single-ship action fought during the American Civil War between a United States Navy warship, USS Kearsarge, and a Confederate States Navy warship, CSS Alabama, on June 19, 1864, off Cherbourg, France.

After five successful commerce raiding missions in the Atlantic Ocean, CSS Alabama turned into Cherbourg Harbor on June 11, 1864. The Confederate States sloop-of-war was commanded by Captain Raphael Semmes, formerly of CSS Sumter. It was Captain Semmes' intention to drydock his ship and receive repairs at the French port.

On June 14, Kearsarge finally caught up with Alabama as she was receiving repairs. Kearsarge did not attack, as Alabama was in a neutral port; instead, she waited, initiating a blockade of CSS Alabama in Cherbourg. Union Captain Winslow telegraphed USS St. Louis to request her assistance, but the fighting began before she could arrive. Confederate Captain Semmes used the time to drill his men for the coming battle. On June 19, CSS Alabama, with nowhere else to go, ran up the Stars and Bars and exited the harbor to attack Kearsarge. She was escorted by the French Navy ironclad Couronne, whose mission was to ensure that the ensuing battle occurred outside the French harbor.

During the battle, forty Confederate sailors were casualties (19 killed in action or drowned and 21 wounded). Another seventy or so were picked up by Kearsarge. Thirty or so were rescued by Deerhound, a British yacht, which Captain Winslow asked to help evacuate Alabama's crew, and three French pilot boats. Captain Semmes and fourteen of his officers were among the sailors rescued by Deerhound. Instead of delivering the captured Confederates to Kearsarge, Deerhound set a course for Southampton, thus enabling Captain Semmes' escape. This act severely angered Kearsarge's crew, who begged their captain to allow them to open fire on the British yacht. Captain Winslow would not allow this, so the Confederates got away and avoided imprisonment.        Source

The Battle of the Kearsarge and the Alabama is an 1864 oil painting by Édouard Manet. The painting commemorates the Battle of Cherbourg of 1864, a naval engagement of the American Civil War between the Union cruiser USS Kearsarge and the Confederate raider CSS Alabama. Many spectators were able to see the battle from the coast of France and saw that USS Kearsarge sank CSS Alabama. Not having witnessed the battle himself, Manet relied on press descriptions of the fight to document his work. Within one month of this battle, Manet had already completed this painting and got it on display in the print shop of Alfred Cadart in Paris.

The painting was acquired by the French art collector Marguerite Charpentier in 1878 and is now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.        Source

Dave responded:
   The Battle of Cherbourg was fought in the English Channel, where the wreck of Alabama was discovered in 1984. Both ships were of the latest design for wooden hulled warships, although they still had masts and sails, they also had steam engines and with screw (propeller) drives which allowed them to advance against wind and tide, or even no wind. That gave the ships great advantages in both speed and maneuverability over sailing ships in battle.

   Just off of Cherbourg, Normandy, France... the chops of the English Channel...

  This amateur Civil War historian (I prefer to call it the War of Secession) knows that from studying the naval aspects of that conflict. The Alabama was a very successful commerce raider that ranged and roved the globe capturing or sinking 65 Union merchant ships before being run to ground in Cherbourg.
  It was an old-fashioned duel. The Kearsarge had the Alabama bottled up in Cherbourg harbor. Deciding to fight instead of waiting it out under French protection, the 'Bama's captain sent out an challenge to the Kearsarge that he was coming out and it was his intention to have at it like proper seamen...

  ... and the CSS Alabama met her doom...

  I became interested in that period of our history years ago after learning of a great-great-grandfather who was with the 12th Michigan Infantry Regiment. They fought in the 'western' campaigns and were most notably at the Battle of Shiloh (in the 'Hornet's Nest') and the Siege of Vicksburg. The 12th Michigan wound up the war in Arkansas after helping to take Little Rock and skirmishing thereabouts...
  He was disabled out at war's end and my family has copies of those records from the National Archives. Family lore has it that his wife found him crawling up the lane leading to their place...
  That ancestor, a 35 y/o farmer and father of 5 when he enlisted, came from a unique locale; a site certainly like no other in the US... A hamlet called Covert on the SE shore of Lake Michigan. Therein its name lies its uniqueness for, you see, Covert was a completely integrated community and was breaking laws to do so...
  That story is detailed in this remarkable book...

  "In the heartland of 19th century America, amid a roaring sea of racism and hatred, a mixed-race community existed where blacks lived as equal citizens with whites. Schools and churches were completely integrated, blacks and whites married and power and wealth were shared between the races. Starting in the 1860s, the people of Covert, Michigan, broke both the laws and barriers to attempt what then seemed impossible: to love ones neighbor as oneself!"

~~~~~
  Covert had a GAR chapter after the war and it, too, was integrated (photo in book) The black Covert men had enlisted in the federal US Colored Troops. Because of that they were denied participation in state GAR encampments.
~~~~~

  I have a signed copy of the book that my family received in 2009 from the author, now a non-resident History Fellow at Harvard, during Covert's Sesquicentennial Homecoming for being direct descendants of a founding family - the Teachouts... (there's a photo of their homestead in the book). I, my mother, and an uncle were asked to stand as Teachout representative recognition during ceremonies held in the high school auditorium amid the festivities... I wore my DAV garrison cap in honor of my ancestor's sacrifice...

~~~~~
  See? It can be done...
  The mighty Wikipedia tells me this battle was fought off the coast of Cherbourg, France. I'm going to read the article to find out why to U.S. ships were duking it out off the coast of France.
  Rain overnight was delightful. The wind today was not. I'm actually hoping the atmospheric river predicted for NorCal happens; I'd love not having to water my gardens for a couple of days.
Anecdotes
Old Age
• Professional violinists seldom like to give up their instrument even after their playing days are over. Josef Gingold met Joseph Szigeti after he had retired, and he noticed that Mr. Szigeti was carrying a violin case with him, so he asked him if he was still playing. Unfortunately, Mr. Szigeti had gotten so old that the violin strings cut his fingers, but he explained, "Since I was six years old, I've been traveling with the violin. It feels so nice to hold it."
• Pierre Monteux once conducted pianist Artur Schnabel and the San Francisco Symphony in Beethoven's Fourth Concerto. All went excellently, and at the end both Mr. Monteux and Mr. Schnabel were weeping. Mr. Schnabel took Mr. Monteux's hands in his own and whispered to him, "We are two old fools who love music very much, Monteux." Too overcome with emotion to say anything, Mr. Monteux nodded in agreement.
Opera
• Although Jon Vickers had made a name for himself as a tenor in Canada, his career was not advancing internationally, and so he decided to get out of opera on June 30, 1956, unless he had made a major breakthrough by that time. In the meantime, he went to New York to work with coach and accompanist Leo Taubman, who frequently invited colleagues to listen to Mr. Vickers sing. This led to a few good offers to sing in New York Town Hall, in Philadelphia, and in New Orleans. More importantly, on May 9, 1956, Mr. Vickers received a telegram inviting him to sing in Covent Garden - this telegram saved him from a too-early retirement. (Ironically, because of previous engagements, he was unable to go to Covent Garden immediately, as the telegram requested. Instead, he went to Covent Garden a month later, sang two auditions, and was offered a contract.)
• Rutland Barrington, despite being a not particularly good singer, created many comedy roles in Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas. During the opening night for Patience, one of Sir William Schwenck Gilbert's friends said to him, "Barrington's in good voice. He's singing in tune." "Yes," replied Sir William, "opening night nerves."
• Among the many debts that we owe to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is that he inspired Pyotr Ilich Tchaikovsky. When Tchaikovsky was about 10 years old, he saw a performance of Mozart's Don Giovanni; the opera so impressed him that he decided to devote his life to music.
• When he was general manager of Covent Garden, Henry Higgins worried that the orchestra would drown out the voice of Irish tenor John McCormack. Mr. McCormack's reply is a classic: "Then make your d*mned orchestra play softer."
• For a while, the Met had two African-American sopranos: Martina Arroyo and Leontyne Price. One day at the Met, Ms. Arroyo was mistaken for Ms. Price. She replied, "I'm the other one, honey."
• The Italians are serious about opera. In 1876, Giacomo Puccini walked a long distance - nearly 50 miles one way - with some friends to hear the opera Aida by Giuseppe Verdi.
Parties
• Elsa Maxwell once held a party at which she invited modernists such as Darius Milhaud, Arthur Honegger, and Igor Stravinsky, as well as traditionalists such as Anton Rubinstein and Jascha Heifetz. At first, the two groups stayed apart, and the traditionalists declined to perform with the modernists. However, the traditionalists listened to the music of the modernists, reluctantly at first then with growing admiration, and at the end of the night members of the two groups hugged each other and swore to be friends eternally.
Lilly Wachowski
"Matrix" co-creator Lilly Wachowski wasn't happy that Elon Musk and Ivanka Trump were quoting her movie.
On Sunday morning, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO posted a cryptic tweet, saying "Take the red pill" with an emoji of a red rose.
As most movie buffs know, "take the red pill" is a reference from the Wachowski sisters' sci-fi blockbuster "The Matrix." In the movie, Morpheus (Lawrence Fishburne) reveals to the protagonist Neo (Keanu Reeves) that he's been living in a computer simulation. He offers Neo a choice: Take a blue pill and go back to his life and forget about everything, or take a red pill to learn the truth about the Matrix and his fake reality.
However, the phrase "take the red pill" has taken on a new meaning in Internet subculture, and it usually refers to conservative political beliefs. It can now mean shifting one's political alignment to the right, and it's often used in Internet forums related to Donald Trump or men's rights groups.
Musk's tweet drew plenty of controversy in the comments, and had more than 190,000 likes by Sunday afternoon. Ivanka Trump then quoted "Taken!" on Musk's tweet, prompting Wachowski to reply "F- both of you"
Fox News has cut its coronavirus coverage by more than 20% in recent weeks, according to data reported by Media Matters for America.
According to the media research group, 95% of weekday segments aired on Fox from March 12 through April 10 were related to the novel coronavirus. But just a month later from April 13 through May 11, coronavirus-related coverage dropped to 74% of weekday segments, and by the middle of May, "coronavirus-related weekday segments accounted for only 56% of all output from the network."
The network's coronavirus coverage is significantly smaller when compared to that of CNN, which, according to the data since March 12, had 90% of all weekday coverage except for one feature coronavirus-related stories, according to Media Matters. For MSNBC, coronavirus-related coverage accounted for more than 80% of each day's programming in the same period, the report said.
However, on-air figures like host Tucker Carlson repeated calls for President Donald Trump (R-Seedy) to lift lockdown measures and open businesses across the country, apparently echoing comments by Trump that are in direct opposition to recommendations from leading experts as coronavirus cases steadily rose.
The remaining coverage on the network has focused less on scientific findings behind the pandemic, but instead on pushing stories on the political divide under existing lockdown measures and favorable looks at anti-lockdown protests, though Fox employees are under a work-from-home order through at least June 15.
Idina Menzel Responds
Snoop Dogg
No matter his fame and notoriety, rapper Snoop Dogg proved that he's just like the rest of us -- he, too, sometimes needs to jam out to music in his car to relieve stress. But his choice of music might surprise you.
Last week, Snoop shared a video to his Instagram of him listening to a song in his car as he tried to decompress amid the coronavirus pandemic.
But the music coming out of his stereo wasn't the latest rap hit or one of his own tracks from back in the day. It was "Let It Go" from Disney's "Frozen."
Snoop Dogg's unexpectedly wholesome video blew up on social media, racking up more than 1 million views and garnering various reactions on Twitter.
Idina Menzel, the actress who voiced Elsa in the movie and sang "Let It Go," even joined in. She responded to Snoop Dogg on Thursday by jamming out to his track "Drop It Like It's Hot."
Blunt Disclaimer
Disney
Days before a small portion of the Walt Disney World Resort reopens after months of being shuttered due to the novel coronavirus, the company posted a blunt disclaimer to would-be guests.
Disney Springs shopping and dining complex will once again welcome guests beginning Wednesday. And while Disney has made it clear that "enhanced health and safety measures" will be the utmost importance - guests still assume all the risk.
"An inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 exists in any public place where people are present. COVID-19 is an extremely contagious disease that can lead to severe illness and death," reads a disclaimer on the Disney World website.
It concludes: "By visiting Walt Disney World Resort, you voluntarily assume all risks related to exposure to COVID-19."
On Wednesday, only subcontracted shops will be open at Disney Springs. The next phase will start seven days later when Disney retail shops, such as World of Disney Store, and Disney eateries reopen.
Grants Waiver
Navy
For the first time, the U.S. Navy has granted a waiver to allow a transgender sailor to continue her military service despite the president's ban on transgender people serving openly in the armed forces.
Attorneys for the sailor and a spokesperson for Navy Secretary James E. McPherson confirmed earlier this week that senior government officials had approved the waiver. Navy spokesperson Lt. Brittany Stephens said the sailor, known only as "Jane Doe" in media reports and court documents, "requested a waiver to serve in their preferred gender" and will be "allowed to adhere to standards associated with their preferred gender, such as uniforms and grooming," according to CNN, which was the first to report on the waiver.
SPART*A, an organization that advocates for transgender service members, said in a statement that the organization is "ecstatic" about the Navy's announcement, hoping it could pave the way for more transgender people to serve openly in the armed forces.
It has been a long fight for advocacy groups to reach even this milestone. Jane Doe's request has been the only one of its kind granted since President Donald Trump (R-Abomination) announced in July 2017 that he intended to prohibit transgender troops from serving openly in the military, reversing a year-old policy from the prior administration. Although the ban was initially blocked in a series of federal court rulings, the Supreme Court eventually lifted those injunctions.
'Deep State'
Inspector General
White House adviser Peter Navarro (R-Delusional) downplayed the firing of the State Department's inspector general in a TV appearance on Sunday, linking him to the "deep state" and saying that those who are not loyal to the administration must go.
Steve Linick became the fourth inspector general Donald Trump (R-Failure) has fired in two months, following his acquittal by the Republican-controlled Senate in his impeachment trial.
"We've had tremendous problems with, some people call it the 'Deep State.' And I think that's apt. So I don't mourn the loss," said Mr Navarro, director of the Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy, on ABC's This Week.
On Saturday, Democrats launched an investigation into Mr Trump's late-night firing of Mr Linick, the latest in an escalating pattern of firing watchdogs whom he views as a threat to his presidency.
Blame Game
CDC
The White House rebuked the top US health agency on Sunday, saying "it let the country down" on providing testing crucial to the battle against the coronavirus outbreak.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been under intense scrutiny since producing a faulty test for COVID-19 that caused weeks of delays in the US response.
Critics have pointed out that it could simply have accepted kits made by the World Health Organization, which has been producing them since late January, instead of insisting on developing its own test.
"Early on in this crisis, the CDC, which really had the most trusted brand around the world in this space, really let the country down with the testing," White House trade advisor Peter Navarro (R-Feckless) told NBC's "Meet the Press."
Trump often blames the administration of his predecessor, Barack Obama, for passing on "broken tests" for the new coronavirus -- although Obama left office years before the virus came into existence.
25th Anniversary
Panchen Lama
Tibet's self-declared government-in-exile marked the 25th anniversary of the disappearance of a boy named as Tibetan Buddhism's second highest figure by calling on China on Sunday to account for his whereabouts.
The Tibetan parliament in northern India, known as the Kashag, said the boy named the 11th Panchen Lama who was taken away at age 6 along with his family in 1995 continued to be recognized as the sole legitimate holder of his title.
China, which claims Tibet as its own territory, named another boy, Gyaltsen Norbu, to the position and he is believed to live under close government control in mainland China and is rarely seen in public.
The Dalai Lama, who fled into exile following an abortive uprising against Chinese rule in 1959, named the original Panchen, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, with the help of Tibetan lamas trained in reading portents and signs.
China claims the reincarnate can only be chosen by pulling lots from a golden urn, a method it used to pick its own candidate under strict control of the officially atheistic ruling Communist Party.
"Outdated Browsers"
AP Exams
With the havoc caused by the coronavirus pandemic, Advanced Placement (AP) students have had to take their exams at home. But due to a nationwide technical glitch, many students' tests are not being counted, putting their college credit and final grades at risk.
AP courses are college-level classes for high school students. At the end of the academic year, students take a cumulative exam, and those who score high enough can potentially earn college credit for the class. College Board offers AP courses in English, social sciences, math, computer science, arts, history, and sciences.
Students took to Twitter to share photos and videos of what happened wen they tried to submit their recent exams.
The technical issues started on May 11, the very first day of AP testing. College board said that approximately 2% of the 50,000 students - or roughly 1,000 students - who took that day's AP Physics C: Mechanics exam experienced difficulties when they tried to submit their answers. The organization tweeted "we anticipated that a small percentage of students would encounter technical difficulties," which is why they have a makeup window scheduled in June.
