Rosie Waites: Five 'Titanic' myths spread by films (BBC News)
It is the tragic story that everybody knows the end to -- the doomed 'Titanic' sinks. Its final hours have become the stuff of myth -- but how much have the various film versions of the story helped to create and reinforce these legends?

Death Valley Days is an American radio and television anthology series featuring true stories of the old American West, particularly the Death Valley area. Created in 1930 by Ruth Woodman, the program was broadcast on radio until 1945. It continued from 1952 to 1975 as a syndicated television series. The series was sponsored by the Pacific Coast Borax Company (20 Mule Team Borax, Boraxo).
The 451 television episodes were introduced by a host. The longest-running was "The Old Ranger" from 1952 to 1965, played by Stanley Andrews, when the series was produced by McGowan Productions, producer of the Sky King television series. Filmaster Productions Inc., who produced the first several seasons of Gunsmoke for CBS Television, took over production of the series in the mid-1960s.

I believe that the old radio/TV series "Death Valley Days" was hosted by (longest-running), "The Old Ranger" from 1952 to 1965, and who was played by Stanley Andrews.
Here's Stan the man, playing the role of, 'Old Ranger...'
PS: Okay, here's my latest adventure caring for the kids. I walked my gks down to Subway Sandwiches for lunch on Friday, and then went to the CVS drugstore for one item. CVS is a huge chain store, and here in the Bronx they have decided to remove all their checkers, and force customers to use self-serve check outs. What a riot, all the little old ladies standing around with baskets of items (many use these drug stores for grocery shopping) bitching like crazy. The manager (who looked positively frenzied) came out to, 'teach' us how to use the machines - and, as if in unison, we all turned on him at one time.
"This is what is happening to the jobs across the country" I bellowed!
"This is what Romney and the Republicans want for us" I practically shouted - to many nodding heads!
What followed was a chorus of "Stupid's" and "Oy Vey's" as the seniors vowed that CVS "would regret it!"
This is not to mention all of the non-English speaking/reading 'au-pair' girls, standing in line with their many charges - looking ready to cry with all the pandemonium going around them. (Collateral damage - sorry, but necessary to make our point.)
I also can't read the instructions on the damn machine because of my sight, and think it's outrageous - but the gks seemed to take it in stride.
We had a busy and fun week - today, I rest...
Charlie responded:

The Old Ranger introduced Death Valley Days. The series aired on radio from 1930-1945, then on TV from 1952-1975 in 30 minute episodes. The show was sponsored by a western mining firm, The Pacific Coast Borax Company, that promoted its abrasive cleaning products 40 Mule Team Borax and Boraxo on commercial breaks.

The world-record cowbell ensemble wasn't supposed to assemble on Church Street until 4 p.m. Saturday, but folks started arriving on the Church Street Marketplace before Burlington's church bells struck noon to claim their cowbells and drumsticks and start making some noise. Lots and lots of noise.
By the time Phish drummer Jon Fishman came on stage just after 4 and introduced the "World Record Breaking Event Band," the cowbell-wielding crowd was ready to play. Fishman - manning the cowbell, of course - and his five band mates led by Burlington vocalist Joshua Panda launched into the cowbell-intensive classic-rock song "Time Has Come Today" by The Chambers Brothers, and roughly 1,600 participants joined right in. The 640 people who played in the previous Guinness World Record-certified largest ensemble, in September 2009 in Switzerland, were about to fade into cowbell oblivion.
Fishman, of course, formed the now-famous rock band Phish in Burlington with Trey Anastasio, Mike Gordon and Page McConnell in the early 1980s, not long after two guys named Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield started an ice-cream company in the city. Phish and Ben & Jerry's linked 15 years ago to create an ice-cream flavor, Phish Food, and Saturday's event in the shadow of Ben & Jerry's Scoop Shop on Church Street was held partly to celebrate that anniversary.
The bigger reason, though, was to raise money for Vermont flood relief following last summer's devastation caused by the remnants of Hurricane Irene. Those joining in the clamorous Church Street collaboration paid anywhere from $12 to $60 that went toward flood relief through Phish's nonprofit charitable organization, the WaterWheel Foundation.
Fishman wore a "More cowbell" T-shirt, referencing the famous "Saturday Night Live" skit in which a record producer played by Christopher Walken repeatedly urges a musician played by Will Farrell to add cowbell as they record the Blue Oyster Cult song "(Don't Fear) The Reaper." Fishman and his fellow members of the World Record Breaking Event Band - Panda, guitarist Bob Wagner, drummer Russ Lawton, keyboard player Phil Abair and bass player Aaron Hersey - plowed through that tune to big cheers from the crowd. Fishman dolled up for the occasion by tying up his T-shirt to bear his midriff a la Britney Spears.

James Cameron's 1997 blockbuster "Titanic" sailed beyond the $2 billion mark in lifetime ticket sales, thanks to a 3-D re-release of the film that was timed to the centennial of the ship's sinking.
Only one other movie has topped $2 billion, and it's also Cameron's. His 2009 sci-fi smash "Avatar" earned $2.8 billion worldwide.
The "Titanic" reissue took in about $100 million this weekend - $11.6 million domestically and a whopping $88.2 million in 69 overseas markets. That included a $58 million debut in China and put the re-release total worldwide at $190.8 million.
Added to the film's $1.84 billion haul in its original release, "Titanic" now stands at $2.03 billion worldwide.

Out behind a small farmhouse on a Long Island country road sits an old gray barn where a tormented artist dripped paint off brushes, sticks - even turkey basters - onto canvasses spread out on a wooden floor. Besides making quite a mess of things, leaving splash marks everywhere, Jackson Pollock also created some of the 20th century's greatest masterpieces.
Pollock, who would have turned 100 this year, is being remembered at a New York City fundraiser later this month honoring a charity that aids struggling artists, along with the Academy Award-nominated actor and filmmaker Ed Harris who spent nearly a decade making the 2000 film "Pollock."
There also are exhibitions in Washington, D.C., and at the home Pollock shared with his wife, artist Lee Krasner, in the Springs community of East Hampton - now a museum and study center. And shoe manufacturer Crocs is releasing a Pollock-inspired shoe this June, fashioned after the paint-splashed floor that visitors can still see in the artist's barn.
Pollock, a lifelong alcoholic who died behind the wheel in a drunken-driving crash at the age of 44, was a controversial artist reviled by some critics and lionized by others. His best-known paintings were created by dripping paint, seemingly haphazardly, across canvasses large and small. Some feature popping bright colors, others are stark black-and-whites.
Hollywood and the entertainment industry are "shooting themselves in the foot, or maybe worse than the foot" by pushing the current anti-piracy legislation, according to Google co-founder Sergey Brin.
He said the Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect IP Act that Hollywood has been lobbying for would have led to the U.S. using the same technology and approach it has criticized China and Iran for using.
The entertainment industry, he said, is failing to understand that users will continue to download pirated content as long as it is easier to acquire and use than legitimately obtained material.
Brin's criticism of Hollywood was part of an alarming portrait he painted of the current Internet landscape. He said that the principles of openness and universal access that fostered the creation of the Internet three decades ago are under greater threat than ever.
He said five years ago he did not believe China or any country could effectively restrict the Internet for long but he had been proven wrong.
"I thought there was no way to put the genie back in the bottle, but now it seems in certain areas the genie has been put back in the bottle," Brin said. He cited China, Saudi Arabia and Iran as the greatest threats.

Actor and comedian Bill Cosby says the debate over the killing of Trayvon Martin by a neighborhood watch volunteer should be focused on guns, not race.
In an interview on CNN's "State of the Union" aired Sunday, Cosby said calling George Zimmerman a racist doesn't solve anything. Cosby says the bigger question is what Zimmerman was doing with a gun, and who taught him how to behave with it.
The shooting of the 17-year-old Martin on Feb. 26 has ignited a nationwide debate about race and self-defense.
Cosby said during the interview, which was taped Thursday afternoon, that he once owned a gun but no longer does. He says there is a need to get guns off the streets, and that people should be taught to use every possible alternative before shooting someone.

Joe Muto, Gawker's so-called "Fox News mole" and former associate producer at Bill O'Reilly's "Factor," appeared on CNN in his first interview since being fired by the cable news network.
Muto said that he probably committed career suicide by going rogue at the News Corp.-owned channel.
"I think it's pretty safe to say my career in cable news is over," Muto told Howard Kurtz. "I don't foresee anyone outside of Current TV hiring me."
But Muto--who admitted he is "not a very good mole" after being caught by Fox within 24 hours of his first dispatch for Gawker--said he was fed up after toiling at Fox for eight years, most of them spent as an associate producer.
"This was a primal scream from a long-time Fox employee who just couldn't take it anymore and could not take it one more day in that place," Muto said.

American revolutionary leader George Washington has been voted the greatest enemy commander to face Britain, lauded for his spirit of endurance against the odds and the enormous impact of his victory.
In a contest organised by the National Army Museum, Washington triumphed over Irish independence hero Michael Collins, France's Napoleon Bonaparte, German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel and Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey.
Making the case for Washington, historian Stephen Brumwell said the American War of Independence (1775-83) was "the worst defeat for the British Empire ever."
Almost 8,000 people voted in an online poll which produced a shortlist of five men, whose merits were debated by guest speakers at a weekend event at the museum before a final ballot of attendees.

Movie fans have chosen real violence over the slapstick variety as "The Hunger Games" held off "The Three Stooges" to remain the No. 1 weekend movie.
Lionsgate's "The Hunger Games," the blockbuster about teens competing in a televised fight to the death, stayed on top for a fourth-straight weekend with $21.5 million. That raises the film's domestic total to $337.1 million.
Peter and Bobby Farrelly's slapstick update "The Three Stooges" opened in second-place with $17.1 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.
That was well above industry expectations of around $10 million for the 20th Century Fox update starring Chris Diamantopoulos as Moe, Sean Hayes as Larry and Will Sasso as Curly.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

2. "The Three Stooges," $17.1 million.
