Ted Rall: Lose Your House, Collect $300
Even though they qualified for federal loan modifications, the banks seized 1.1 million homes, making 1.1 million families homeless after they were approved for refinancing. Since the average foreclosed home was worth $191,000, the banks stole $210 billion in homes. Under the "landmark settlement," these wrongfully evicted Americans will receive $300 or $500 each, the value of a modest night out at a nice restaurant in Manhattan (two tenths of one percent of their loss).
Paul Krugman: Lust for Gold (New York Times)
News flash: Recent declines in the price of gold, which is off about 17 percent from its peak, show that this price can go down as well as up. You may consider this an obvious point, but … it has come as a rude shock to many small gold investors, who imagined that they were buying the safest of all assets.
Paul Krugman: Adam Smith Hates Bitcoin (New York Times)
And now here we are in a world of high information technology - and people think it's smart, nay cutting-edge, to create a sort of virtual currency whose creation requires wasting real resources in a way Adam Smith considered foolish and outmoded in 1776.
Marc Dion: "Goodbye, Democracy: It Was Nice Working With You" (Creators Syndicate)
The evil government may well have a plan to enslave you, to take your AR-15 and your Bible. We may be on the way to the New World Order, and your kids may indeed be putting condoms on bananas over at the high school. But no one put his/her name forward to run for the three-year term on the Planning Board, not where I was working Tuesday night. It's not a very big town, but it has a $25,000,000 annual budget. About $15,000,000 of that goes to the schools.
Frank B: 59 inch PVC bow with 2 small fiberglass rods (YouTube)
This isn't my first PVC bow but I did make this one for me. It's around 30 - 35 lbs at 37 inches. It draws and shoots better than the hickory bow I made a few years ago. It only took about 30 - 45 minutes to build. My hickory bow took closer to 20 hours!
Chris Barsanti: "'Louis C.K.: Oh My God': Ethics and Dyspepsia" (PopMatters)
His media profile is that of the controversial shock-comic who leaps into territory that might daunt Sarah Silverman. But what's always been most interesting about C.K. is his quaintly earnest examination of morality and life's purpose, with the occasional joke about cannibalism.

But there are disagreements, based on the definition of newspaper, I suppose, and it is also tied to the history of the printing press, I suppose.

No, I am wrong. I am also not crestfallen cuz it's a damn'd hard question, dontcha know! Anyway, apparently some German dude named Johann Carolus in the Free-City of Straßburg (that symbol is a uniquely German one for a double 's') within the German nation of the Holy Roman Empire thought it would be a grand idea to put together a compilation called "Relation aller Fürnemmen und gedenckwürdigen Historien" which translates to all you non-German readers as, "Collection of all Distinguished and Commemorable News"... Ta-da! You can call it the "Relation" for ease of use. I think I will...
Oh, "The Times of London" didn't come into being until 1785. Well, as I always say, "A miss is as good as a wild pitch"... or some such baseball analogy thing it being the season and all. Or, striking out swinging, too... That works.
Okay, let's move on, then, shall we?

Several dozen states are looking for an alternative to the GED high school equivalency test because of concerns that a new version coming out next year is more costly and will no longer be offered in a pencil and paper format.
The responsibility for issuing high school equivalency certificates or diplomas rests with states, and they've relied on the General Education Development exam since soon after the test was created to help returning World War II veterans.
But now 40 states and the District of Columbia are participating in a working group that's considering what's available besides the GED, and two test makers are hawking new exams.
The pushback comes as GED Testing Service prepares to introduce a new version of the exam in January. In the first revamp since for-profit Pearson Vue Testing acquired a joint ownership interest in the nonprofit Washington-based GED Testing Service, the cost of the test is doubling to $120. That's led to a case of sticker shock for test takers, nonprofits and states. Some states subsidize some or all of the expense of the exam, while others add an administrative fee. The new GED test would cost $140 to take in Missouri if the state sticks with it.

A campaign by opponents of late Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to get the song "Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead" to the top of the British pop charts to celebrate her death failed on Sunday although it did manage to reach second place.
Thatcher, who died aged 87 on Monday, deeply divided Britons and while some have paid warm tributes to the achievements of her right-wing Conservative governments, others said her privatization of swathes of industry had destroyed communities.
That opposition was manifested in a Facebook campaign to propel the witch song, from the 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz", to number one in the charts, provoking anger from politicians of all parties, right-leaning media, and members of the public.
The Official Charts Company said 52,605 copies of the song had been sold, but that was about 6,000 shy of the chart-topping track "Need U" by British DJ Duke Dumont and singer A*M*E.
Battered by the economic downturn and years of animal rights activism in their own backyard, American mink farmers are now in a different sort of quandary: scrambling to keep up with China's demand for all things fur.
Driven by a hunger for high-end clothing and luxury home goods among China's burgeoning middle class, U.S. exports of mink pelts to China jumped to a record $215.5 million last year - more than double both the value and volume shipped in 2009.
The industry's fortunes had chilled in recent years, with farms shuttering and prices slumping amid the past two recessions and mounting criticism of the fur trade by U.S. and European animal rights groups.
Now, prices of farmed mink pelts are soaring to all-time highs. South Korea and Russia, too, have contributed to a surge in demand that led to shipments of 11.8 million pelts worth $479 million worldwide by U.S. farmers, trappers and auction houses last year. That was nearly triple the level in 2009.

Casino magnate Sheldon Adelson's reference to triad organized crime gangs in testimony in a lawsuit has hit a raw nerve in Macau, the Chinese boomtown that his Las Vegas Sands Corp helped transform from a gangland haven into a $38 billion gambling capital.
The lawsuit against Sands was brought by Hong Kong businessman Richard Suen, who is seeking $328 million he says he is owed for helping the U.S. firm obtain one of three coveted casino licenses in Macau, now the world's biggest gambling market with annual revenues more than six times Las Vegas's.
Adelson's comments about triads reverberated across Macau this week and prompted a former Sands partner, casino operator Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd, to post a regulatory filing with the Hong Kong stock exchange objecting to "certain inaccurate statements".
Sands and Galaxy jointly won a Macau casino license in 2002, but they failed to reach an operational agreement and split up. Adelson, 79, when asked in a Las Vegas court why the two firms could not work together, responded that Galaxy "had expressed their judgment they were going to do business with either reputed or triad people and we couldn't do that."
That comment, which drew little attention in Las Vegas, was front-page news in Macau because it suggested China had failed to clean up the violent gangs that dominated the gambling scene a decade ago. Triads involved in Macau's VIP gaming rooms were notorious for their heavy-handed methods of collecting on gambling debt. Macau's VIP segment, where wealthy Chinese wager millions, accounts for around 70 percent of total revenues.

Authorities say comedian Kevin Hart has been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving after his black Mercedes nearly collided with a tanker trunk on a Southern California freeway.
California Highway Patrol Officer Ed Jacobs says Hart appeared intoxicated when he was pulled over before dawn Sunday on Highway 101 in Los Angeles.
Hart failed a field sobriety test and was booked for misdemeanor DUI. He was held on a $5,000 bond.
Jacobs says the Mercedes was being driven erratically at over 90 mph and nearly slammed into a gas tanker.
A female passenger in Hart's car was sent home in a taxi.

Justin Bieber wrote an entry into a guestbook at the Anne Frank House museum in Amsterdam, saying he hoped the Jewish teenager who died in a Nazi concentration camp "would have been a Belieber" - or fan of his - if history were different.
The message triggered a flood of comments on the museum's Facebook page Sunday, with many criticizing the 19-year-old Canadian pop star for writing something they perceive to be insensitive.
Museum spokeswoman Maatje Mostart confirmed that Bieber visited Friday evening. She said the museum was happy to have received Bieber and didn't see anything offensive in his remarks.
Bieber's whole note read: "Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a Belieber."
Some of Bieber's 37 million followers also tweeted messages of support. Others in his fan base - which is heavily weighted toward young girls - tweeted that they didn't know who Anne Frank was.

Three rides at Disneyland, including the famous Space Mountain roller coaster, were temporarily closed over the weekend as the company reviewed its safety protocols after being cited by state regulators.
The citations were received Friday from the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health, according to Disneyland Resorts spokeswoman Suzi Brown.
The closures Saturday of Space Mountain, the Matterhorn Bobsleds and Soarin' Over California were voluntary and were made out of an abundance of caution, Brown said Sunday.
The citations were related to an incident in November when a contracted worker was injured while performing maintenance on the exterior of the Space Mountain attraction.
It was a hair-raising experience for actor Hugh Jackman at a New York City gym.
Radio station 1010 WINS says Jackman was working out in a gym Saturday morning in Manhattan's West Village neighborhood when a woman rushed in, crying and shouting that she loved him.
Police say 47-year-old Kathleen Thurston pulled out a razor filled with hair and threw it at him, then fled and was arrested several blocks from the gym. Jackman wasn't hurt.
Thurston is charged with stalking and awaits arraignment. It's unclear whether she has a lawyer.
Police say she has gone near the victim and his family before.

In this city of innumerable tourist attractions, the clanging, hill-conquering cable cars stand out as a top draw.
The quaint conveyances also stand out for the inordinate number of accidents and the millions of dollars annually the city pays out to settle lawsuits for broken bones, severed feet and bad bruises caused when 19th-century technology runs headlong into 21st-century city traffic and congestion.
Cable cars average about an accident a month and routinely rank among the most accident-prone mass transportation modes in the country per vehicle mile traveled annually, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. Over the last 10 years, city officials have reported 126 accidents injuring 151 people.
The city has paid on average $12 million annually to settle all claims connected to its mass transportation system that in addition to cable cars consists of electric street cars and buses, which travel many more miles and carry many more passengers.

Songwriter George Jackson, co-author of "Old Time Rock and Roll" and hundreds of other soul and rock tunes, has died. He was 68.
Thomas Couch Sr., chairman of the board of Malaco Records, says Jackson died Sunday morning at his home in Ridgeland, a suburb of Jackson. Couch says Jackson had been sick with cancer for about a year.
Jackson was born in Indianola, Miss. He recorded dozens of singles starting in the 1960s, but made his mark as a writer, beginning with FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Ala.
The Osmonds recorded his "One Bad Apple" in 1970, taking it to No. 1.

A candlelight vigil is planned for Chi Cheng, the bassist of the Grammy-winning rock band Deftones who died after struggling to recover from serious injuries suffered in a car crash more than four years ago.
The Sacramento Bee reports the 42-year-old Cheng died early Saturday.
Cheng's mother, Jeanne Marie Cheng, wrote on the One Love for Chi website that her son was taken to an emergency room when his heart stopped.
Cheng was ejected from a car that collided head-on with another vehicle on Nov. 4, 2008, in Santa Clara.
The newspaper says Cheng had been in a coma, but had recently shown some signs of improvement.
