'Shackleton' On A&E
Michelle V
Shame on you Marty!!
The only reason you possibly could have for omitting mention of the most excellent ''Shackleton'' on A&E is that you cover only non-cable shows .
For most of my adult life, I've awaited the full treatment of this greatest of adventure stories that IMHO was not equalled in the annals of human exploration 'til the early
space-race. My tiny library of a few hundred books would be naked without my Atlasas of Exploration, and the saga of the Shackleton expedition was by far the epitome of successful failure.
A&E has undertaken the task to do justice to the story - employing the considerable talents of Kenneth Branagh, (a near dead-ringer for the real Shackleton , to boot) for the endeavor. They've
produced a 4-hr epic, (shown on consecutive nights, Apr7-8, with the second night preceded by a "Biography" episode of the man.
PBS had a similar documentary-style show on the subject about two weeks ago, (including some extraordinary movie footage by Hurley of actual events from the expedition), but A&E takes us
into the characters as they become closer to despair and death to find the depths of courage no one thought possible.
I admit I've only seen the first part so far, but am awaiting tonight's conclusion with great excitment. As familiar as I am with the story, there were some details new to me, and
I know the best, most excruciating part is yet to come. Peary and Byrd were lightweights compared to this man who surmounted ten times their odds to deliver his entire crew alive
after 2 years of being stranded in a hell of frozen wasteland.
This is a MUST SEE!!!

Yes, Ma'am!.
Michelle knows her TV (among many other things), and I won't argue. Watch this show!
In The Chaos Household
Last Night
Cooked a bargain turkey & fed some pals.
The 'Simpsons' had a particularly good episode...'stupid monkey face' - LOL.
Tonight, Monday, CBS has fresh episodes of 'Yes, Dear', 'Baby Bob',
a rerun 'Raymond', a fresh 'King Of Queens' and a fresh 'Family Law'.
Scheduled on a fresh Dave are Rosie Perez and George Miller.
Don't know who's on Craiggers.
NBC is all fresh with 'Fear Factor', 'Third Watch' and 'Crossing Jordan'.
Scheduled on a fresh Jay are Damon Wayans and Greta Van Susteren.
Conan is a rerun with Laua Prepon, Todd Solontz and Rachel Dratch.
Scheduled on a fresh Carson Daly is Janeane Garofalo and Fat Joe.
Still showing their contempt for their viewing audience, ABC throws away their first hour with another
rerun of supposedly 'Funniest Home Videos'. It's followed by 'The Bachelor' and one of the last
episodes of 'Once & Again'.
Bill Maher has Greg Palast scheduled.
The WB has a 2 hour rerun of '7th Heaven'.
Faux has the movie 'The Wedding Singer'.
UPN has reruns of 'The Hughleys', 'One On One', 'The Parkers' and 'Girlfriends'.
Anyone have any opinions?
Or reviews?

Ozzy Will Visit White House
If the Commander in Chief breaks bread with Ozzy Osbourne next month, relax; George W. Bush is not a closet metalhead, nor is it a sign of the coming apocalypse.
The unlikely meeting would happen at the annual White House Correspondents Association dinner, where the godfather of heavy metal and his wife, Sharon,
will be the guests of TV news anchor Greta Van Susteren and Fox News Channel, according to a network spokesperson. Guests are invited by members of the
association to sit at their respective tables, and the Osbournes accepted FNC's offer earlier this week.
Now in its 88th year, the White House Correspondents Association dinner is a goodwill gesture between the White House and the journalists who cover it.
President George W. Bush is scheduled to attend this year's event, which will take place May 4 at the Washington Hilton in the nation's capital.

'The Two Towers'
Major Spoiler Alert
On March 29th 2002, New Line Cinema released a new final reel of film for the Fellowship of the Ring, which included four minutes of footage from
The Two Towers, due for release on Dec 18th 2002. This is the first crop of screencaptures of that footage.

Postponing Trip To South Africa
Oprah Winfrey
U.S. talk-show host Oprah Winfrey has put off a planned trip to South Africa this month because she feels worried about traveling, South Africa's
Sunday Times newspaper reported.
"My instinct says things aren't right in parts of the world," Winfrey, who became one of television's highest paid personalities through her
daytime talk show, told the paper.
When asked if she was referring to southern Africa or all parts of the world, Winfrey said: "All parts -- and to get from my part to your part, I'd have to
travel over other parts."

Rejected New Look
Wall Street Journal
The Wall Street Journal plans to unveil its new look Tuesday, April 9, 2002. In an advertising campaign, the Journal pokes fun at its secretive
design process by showing the newspaper in the style of a supermarket tabloid as one of the "rejected" proposals for the new design.
'The Underpants' Off-Broadway
Steve Martin
Steve Martin took a second crack at Off-Broadway comedy with his spin on the 1911 German play "The Underpants." The actor/playwright
simply says he found the theme too provocative to pass up.
"The premise is, two men come into a woman's life because of a very small glimpse of lingerie, and that's enough for me!" he says.
Pals Paul Simon, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg and Kyle MacLachlan turned up to support his latest theatrical effort.
Martin is also busy bringing his novel, "Shopgirl," to the screen and is looking at Anand Tucker ("Hilary and Jackie") to direct. He'll
also play an unlikely sidekick to Queen Latifah in "In the Houze," due out next year.

Breakup Was Devastating
Tara Reid
Actress Tara Reid was so devastated after her breakup with MTV's Carson Daly that she couldn't eat and sought therapy from five doctors.
Reid, 26, who starred in "American Pie" and "Josie and the Pussycats" told CosmoGIRL! magazine for its May editions that she turns to her parents during
difficult times. She and Daly, host of MTV's "Total Request Live" video countdown show, broke off their engagement last year.
After the breakup, everything reminded her of Daly, she said. Reid couldn't even listen to "Thank You," by Dido, until recently.
Reid said she's better now, and that she and Daly are friends.

The Erotica of Robert P. Hanssen
Convicted Soviet/Russian spy Robert P. Hanssen also led a secret kinky sex life. He posted this erotic story about his wife Bonnie to the Usenet group alt.sex.stories
in 1998. The story takes place in Chicago, where Bob and Bonnie Hanssen lived earlier in their marriage. A new book reports that Hanssen also installed a video
surveillance system in his home so that a friend could watch him having sex with his wife Bonnie.

Bodyguards For 'The Graduate'
Rosie O'Donnell
Rosie O'Donnell and Jennifer Lopez may have more in common that you'd think. Especially when it comes to bodyguards.
Somehow, you don't expect the no-frills talk-show sweetheart to appear at the theater with two burly bubbas to keep fans at bay. Especially not
the whitebread Broadway opening of "The Graduate."
Who could possibly be a menace there? Tony Randall?
But Rosie barreled down the aisle of the Plymouth Theater between a pair of offensive tackles who led her to her seat and later reappeared to escort her out.
With Michael Stipe, Kristin Davis, John McEnroe, Mike Wallace, Walter Cronkite and Art Garfunkel all on hand without security, Rosie's detail looked pretentious.

VH1 & MTV - Both Viacom
More Ozzy
One man largely symbolizes the divergent fortunes of sister stations MTV and VH1. Can you believe it's Ozzy Osbourne?
MTV has him, and the reality sitcom starring the frazzled heavy-metal legend and his family has become the kind of water-cooler hit that cable executives only
dream of. "The Osbournes" has helped MTV build the biggest audience in its history.
VH1 doesn't have him. It doesn't have much of anything else that people are talking about, and that's reflected in sinking ratings and management uncertainty over the future.
Within a month, the series has rivaled past MTV hits like "Jackass" and "Beavis & Butt-Head" and keeps growing. "The Osbournes" drew 4.1 million viewers to its regular
Tuesday time slot on March 26, more popular than any series on cable except for professional wrestling. Striking while it's hot, MTV now airs different episodes
of "The Osbournes" 15 times a week.

No Last Name?
Damien Charles
The DNA testing of Elizabeth Hurley's new baby boy Damien (no surname yet - that's for the courts to decide) will be more intriguing than an
episode of "The X-Files." Rumor has it Hurley is still adamant that Hollywood producer Steve Bing is the daddy and that she's looking forward
to seeing him in court for a full on comparison of bodily fluids to establish paternity.

Celebrating Herb Caen
The Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist who coined the term "beatnik" to define members of the Beat Generation and tapped out more than 16,000 columns
over six decades about his beloved city is being feted again, five years after his death.
The San Francisco Chronicle, dozens of eateries and longtime fans have spent the past few days honoring Herb Caen's April 3 birthday.
The columnist famous for his "three-dot journalism" and his characterization of Baghdad-by-the-Bay traveled the world, ran with fellow icons Frank Sinatra
and John Steinbeck and six days a week delivered Bay Area anecdotes that drew readers in droves.
Here's a snippet of Caen himself: July 3, 1966 THE CITY WITH EVERYTHING: A major league baseball team imported from New York, a major league opera company imported
from everywhere, and a stunning collection of Oriental art ... that was donated by a man who lives in Chicago. Its most flattering song "I Left My Heart," etc., was
written by two young men who lived at the time in Brooklyn and recorded for posterity by an Italian who lives in Hollywood. A city where you can get a sunburn in
the fog and pneumonia in the sun, freeze during baseball season and swelter during football, and read any morning that "it was the coldest day since last August."

Who Is Reading What
Favorite Books
California Gov. Gray Davis' favorite book is "A Man for All Seasons," actor-comedian Lily Tomlin likes "The Shipping News," and film star Mira Sorvino
was fascinated by "A Brief History of Time."
Haley Joel Osment, featured in "The Sixth Sense," recommends "Sphere" by Michael Crichton and "The Killer Angels" by Michael Shaara.
They are among the famous names on the 2002 "Who Reads What? list compiled by Glenna Nowell, a retired small-town librarian who started polling politicians,
athletes, authors and actors in 1988 for an annual list of celebrities' favorite reading materials. The list was released in advance of National Library Week, April 14-20.
Former Olympic figure skater Oksana Baiul chose the story of another athlete: "Never Die Easy: The Autobiography of Walter Payton," by
the Chicago Bears football legend and Don Yeager. Fellow figure-skating Olympian Tara Lipinski listed "All Creatures Great and Small" by James Herriot.
Actor Mira Sorvino called "A Brief History of Time" by Stephen Hawking "utterly fascinating, if extremely challenging reading." Sorvino also
lists Dorothy Allison's "Bastard Out of Carolina," which she describes as "a brilliant American coming of age novel."
Actor Matthew Modine described his choice of Jean Giono's "The Man Who Planted Trees" with an upbeat message, saying it "reminds us that each
of us can make a difference. That we can leave the world a better place for future generations of life on this big blue ball!"

John Thomas
John Thomas, once described by Charles Bukowski as "the best unread poet in America," died March 29 of congestive heart failure. He was 71.
Born John Thomas Idlet, he grew up in Baltimore, attended Loyola College there and briefly considered joining the priesthood. During the Korean War,
he was a cryptographer with the Air Force. He returned home after his 1953 discharge, married the first of four wives and became a computer programmer for Univac.
His life changed when he was hit by a truck and broke his ankle. During weeks of recovery, he grew a beard and began to write. Eventually he produced
three unpublished novels. After reading a book about the Beat scene in Venice - 1959's "The Holy Barbarians" by poet Lawrence Lipton - he left home
with $14 in his pocket and hitchhiked West.
His four decades of work, most of it unpublished or out of print, includes "From Patagonia," a poem about Los Angeles written in the form of a diary,
and the collections "Epopoeia and the Decay of Satire," "Abandoned Latitudes" and "John Thomas," all published in the 1970s and early 1980s.

Louis "Deke" Heyward
Louis "Deke" Heyward, a writer and producer who created "Winky Dink and You," a pioneering interactive TV show, has died. He was 81.
Heyward died of complications from pneumonia on March 26 in Los Angeles, family members said.
Heyward wrote for many TV shows in the 1950s and was head writer for "The Ernie Kovacs Show."
In 1953, he created a Saturday morning children's show with a twist. Viewers at home could help the animated boy called Winky Dink and
his dog Woofer by purchasing a 50-cent kit that included a "magic screen." The clear sheet of plastic was placed over the television
screen so that viewers could help the characters cross a stream, for example, by drawing in a bridge with "magic crayons."
Heyward also briefly produced "The Dick Clark Saturday Night Beechnut Show" in the 1950s. "He not only became my mentor, but was one
of the most adaptable and versatile gentlemen I met in my life," Clark said. "He was involved in all kinds of projects all his life
and never lost his enthusiasm."
In the decades that followed, Heyward was an executive for 20th Century Fox Television, American International Pictures, Four Star
Films and Hanna-Barbera, where in the 1970s he had charge of live programming and movies of the week.
His projects included 1977's Emmy Award-winning television movie "The Gathering," starring Ed Asner and Maureen Stapleton.
In 1980, Heyward rejoined Barry & Enright, which had produced "Winky Dink and You," as vice president of development. During 12
years there, he was instrumental in relaunching the game shows "Twenty-One" and "Tic Tac Dough."
Heyward later was a consultant for DIC Entertainment, a children's entertainment company headed by his son, Andy, creator of
the popular cartoon show "Inspector Gadget."
He also taught writing at a Los Angeles County Probation Department facility and for the Internet-based Rushmore University.
In addition to his son, Heyward is survived by his wife, Sandra; a daughter, Patti, of Los Angeles; and five grandchildren.
