Henry Rollins: Ark de Triomphe (LA Weekly)
… in Williamstown, located in Northern Kentucky, plans are under way to build a scale model of Noah's Ark. The ship will be as it was around 2304 B.C.: 510 feet long, 85 feet wide and 51 feet high, with three levels. Just so you can get your head around this, 510 feet is the length of 1.4 football fields. Go run that back for a touchdown.

Gullgubber are art-objects, amulets, or offerings made of thin pieces of beaten gold (occasionally silver), and date back to early medieval times. In what part of the world are they found?
Gullgubber or guldgubber (Danish), guldgubbar (Swedish), are art-objects, amulets, or offerings found in Scandinavia and dating to early medieval times. They consist of thin pieces of beaten gold (occasionally silver), usually between 1 and 2 sq. cm. in size, usually stamped with a motif, and are the oldest examples of toreutics in Northern Europe.
The word gullgubbe means "little old man of gold" and is taken from a report published in 1791 by Nils Henrik Sjöborg, in which he said that villagers in Ravlunda, Scania who found them in the dunes called them guldgubbar.
Approximately 3,000 gullgubber have been found, from approximately 30 sites in Norway, Sweden, and the greatest number in Denmark. No fewer than 2,350 were found at the settlement of Sorte Muld on the Danish island of Bornholm, while over 100 were found at Lundeborg, near Gudme on the Danish island of Funen, and 122 at Uppåkra, Scania, Sweden. Relatively few gullgubber have so far been found in Norway, although 19 were found during excavations at Vingrom church in Oppland between 2003 and 2005, and the distribution of finds may be affected by modern circumstances as much as the political situation at the time they were laid down.

From Lois Of Oregon With Love was first, and correct, with:
Gullgubber, he's a little old man, made out of beaten gold!
And Scandinavia's COLD! There is nothing new under the sun,

PS: @Lovely Lois, I got a good chuckle from your post today. Oh, and I finally got to catch the FOX (Network) airing of, "Cosmos" last night. I watched the series on PBS years ago, and have Sagan's book on the series as well. I knew the new series would be simplistic, but thought it might inspire a whole new dialogue on the subject.
That being said, my God, the commercials came every 5 minutes (no joke); how the Hell can anyone follow such a chopped-up offering?? I won't be watching anymore.
@Professor Charlie, while I pass on the nuclear option for population control, I do favor mandatory birth control for the masses! In this regard, I admire China for taking control of their population explosion!
Yes, years ago families were large for valid reasons: Infant death, farm help, and lack of reliable birth control for instance. Nowadays it seems we reproduce for carelessness and reality TV (i.e. that "19 children and counting" disaster - where the older children are kept captive on the parental premises to raise the brood while the parents lecture around the country on the joys of parenting)!
2 or 3 children are really the max that people can afford and RAISE these days. Let's just do it!!!

Scandinavia is the answer, if I recall correctly. I always remember that because gullgubber is such a funny word.
Gullgubber makes it sound like a condom for seagulls.
I lay the blame on Sam Scand, who founded Scandanavia when he got thrown out of his brother Fin's country, which I forget the name of. Lol.
They also found gullgubbers in other Northern Europe countries like Denmark, BedroomStan, and Kitchenbob.
Thank you, thank you, now for our next act...

Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden, and Denmark) ~ It was for the intent of protection that the gullgubber ("little old men of gold") were made. Gullgubber are actually offerings. And it was the custom to bury such offerings in the soil where new houses or other buildings were to be built. A ritual was then carried out, whereby one requested the gods to protect the building against accidents, vandalism, and the site was sanctified by the offering action.

Two major beer manufacturers on Friday dropped sponsorship of St. Patrick's Day parades in New York City and Boston to protest bans on gays marching openly.
Sam Adams pulled out of Boston's parade, which takes place on Sunday, and Heineken yanked its support of the New York City parade, slated for Monday. Both parades are allowing gay groups to march but are banning signage about sexual orientation.
Sam Adams made the announcement after coming under pressure from Club Cafe, a Boston bar patronized by the gay community. The bar threatened in a Facebook post on Thursday to stop pouring Sam Adams unless the company withdrew sponsorship.
A Heineken representative told CNBC on Friday: "We believe in equality for all. We are no longer a sponsor of Monday's parade."
Over the past few days, on several occasions, the Time Warner-owned cable-news outlet has trumped its rivals among viewers between the ages of 25 and 54, the demographic most coveted by advertisers. To be certain, Fox News Channel remains the most-watched cable-news network, but CNN is enjoying an uptick.
For two nights, CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360" has won more viewers in the 25-to-54 demo than Fox News' "The O'Reilly Factor," according to data from Nielsen. On Thursday, Cooper attracted an average of 454,000 viewers in the demo compared to O'Reilly's 429,000, according to Nielsen. On Wednesday, Cooper won an average of 431,000 viewers in the demo, Nielsen said, compared to O'Reilly's 386,000.
On Thursday, "Erin Burnett Outfront" at 7 p.m. on CNN notched more 25-to-54 viewers than Greta van Susteren on Fox News at the same hour. And "Piers Morgan Tonight," the 9 p.m. program that CNN has already said will be canceled imminently, won more viewers in the demo than Megyn Kelly did on Fox News at the same hour. Fox News triumphed handily over CNN's second week of "Chicagoland" at 10 p.m., but CNN's lineup from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. also beat MSNBC's in the demo in every hour last night (MSNBC had more total viewers at 10 p.m. than "Chicagoland").
CNN's victory is a partial one at best. Fox News Channel won primetime overall on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, according to Nielsen, with its 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. lineup averaging more in total viewers and viewers between 25 and 54 than either CNN or MSNBC. And MSNBC's primetime lineup averaged more viewers overall than CNN's on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Oprah Winfrey is selling Harpo Studios in Chicago to a developer, but the studio will remain on the property for another two years.
Winfrey filmed "The Oprah Winfrey Show" at the studio from 1990 to 2011, when she ended the talk show to start the Oprah Winfrey Network on cable.
About 200 people work at the 3.5-acre campus, which will sell for about $32 million, Crain's reported Sunday. Harpo said it expects to close the transaction in 30 days.
Winfrey first came to Chicago in 1984 to WLS-TV's morning talk show, "A.M. Chicago." A month later, the show was No. 1 in the market and renamed "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in 1985.

An unnamed Silicon Valley billionaire has purchased the world's most valuable life insurance policy.
The man who cobbled the deal together said Saturday that it took seven months and 19 insurance companies to put together a deal that surpasses a $100 million policy sold to Hollywood mogul David Geffen in 1990.
"No one company can afford to take a $201 million hit," said Dovi Frances, the financial adviser who represents who he calls a "well-known billionaire."
The Guinness Book of World Records announced the surpassing of Geffen's record on Thursday. Guinness officials spent about three months reviewing records, Frances said.
The Niagara River corridor from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario is renowned as a spectacular winter haven for hundreds of thousands of water birds. But this year's bitterly cold season has made it notable for something else: dead ducks.
Biologists say carcasses began piling up by the hundreds in early January after the plunging temperatures started icing over nearly the entire Great Lakes, preventing the ducks from getting to the minnows that are their main source of food. Necropsies on dozens of birds have confirmed the cause: starvation.
"All have empty stomachs. They're half the weight they should be," said Connie Adams, a biologist in the state Department of Environmental Conservation's Buffalo office who has personally seen 950 dead birds.
"This is unprecedented. Biologists who've worked here for 35 years have never seen anything like this," she said. "We've seen a decline in tens of thousands in our weekly waterfowl counts."
It's a phenomenon that has been seen elsewhere along the Great Lakes, with news reports of diving ducks and other waterfowl turning up dead by the hundreds along the southern part of Lake Michigan. They've also been found in Lake St. Clair between Lakes Erie and Huron.
From a basket hoisted on the back of his trawler, fisherman Freddy Gutmann proudly picks up a giant geoduck clam fresh from the frigid waters off the northwestern Canadian coast.
Gutmann has good reason to be in high spirits since within 24 hours, the super-sized shellfish -- shunned by Western chefs -- will be served at top restaurants in Hong Kong, Beijing or Tokyo for a steep price.
Without missing a beat, the 35-year veteran of the Pacific waters off northwest Canada swiftly fills three orange cases with his sorted and cleaned catch so they can be rushed to the airport in Vancouver -- and on to Asia.
While a kilo (2.2 pounds) of geoducks goes for some Can$30 (US$27) these days -- six times less than what top Asian eateries will ask their patrons to fork over -- that wasn't always the case, recalled Gutmann.
"Fifteen years ago, its price was around 30 cents per pound, maximum," he said.
In swirling snow, John Medenge prods a thin ice bridge over a crevasse with an iron-tipped spear, guiding climbers scaling the steep glacial wall using crampons and axes.
"We are the last few who will climb on the ice, it is going so fast," said Medenge, after scaling the treacherous ridge up Mount Stanley, part of the dramatic Rwenzori mountain range straddling the border between Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo.
At 5,109 metres (16,763 feet), Stanley's jagged peak is the third highest mountain in Africa, topped only by Mount Kenya and Tanzania's iconic Kilimanjaro.
But experts warn the ice is melting at "disturbing" rates, and that within two decades Africa's equatorial peaks will be bare rock, impacting agriculture and tourism.
"Every year the ice grows smaller," 54-year old Medenge added, who has been climbing the range since a teenager.

A short, hairy "ape man" who tumbled into a pit in South Africa millions of years ago is back in the running as a candidate ancestor for humans, scientists said Friday.
A painstaking 13-year probe has "convincingly shown", they said, that the strange-looking creature named Little Foot lived some three million years ago -- almost a million years earlier than calculated by rival teams.
If so, it would make Little Foot -- so named for the diminutive size of the bones -- one of the oldest members of the Australopithecus hominid family ever found.
And it would bolster the status of South Africa's Sterkfontein cave complex as part of the "Cradle of Humankind", a UN-recognised World Heritage Site.
Little Foot's skeleton is the most complete of an Australopithecus ever found.
