Henry Rollins: Ask Yourself What Side of History You Want to Be on (LA Weekend)
It must be fun being in comrade Trump's inner circle. They make governing look easy! You form a list of all the things you want to do, bust some executive orders, turn the rhetoric up to 11 and stomp on the distortion pedal. If anyone gets in your way - media, so-called judges, SNL cast members - you just remind everyone once more that Secretary Clinton lost, call them "cupcake" and keep on smiling.
Paul Krugman: Trump's Rosy Scenario (NY Times Blog)
The WSJ reports that the Trump administration's budget planning assumes very high economic growth over the next decade - between 3 and 3.5 percent annually. How was this number arrived at? Basically, they worked backwards, assuming the growth they needed to make their budget numbers add up. Credibility!
The apple tree (Malus pumila, commonly and erroneously called Malus domestica) is a deciduous tree in the rose family best known for its sweet, pomaceous fruit, the apple. It is cultivated worldwide as a fruit tree, and is the most widely grown species in the genus Malus. The tree originated in Central Asia, where its wild ancestor, Malus sieversii, is still found today. Apples have been grown for thousands of years in Asia and Europe, and were brought to North America by European colonists. Apples have religious and mythological significance in many cultures, including Norse, Greek and European Christian traditions.

Rain overnight and more moving in today. We're going to enjoy The Chieftains at the Mondavi Center in Davis (about 18 miles east) this evening, when the rain and wind will be peaking. Whee.
Jim from CA, retired to ID, responded:
The tree originated in Central Asia.

My answer to the trivia question: the apple tree originated in Central Asia.
I saw a video on Facebook that I hope you can use on your website. I said "hope" because the link goes to Facebook and I don't know if it will work for people that don't have a Facebook account. IMO, this video is the best response I've seen so far to Trump's statement that "this administration is running like a fine-tuned machine."
Here's the link.
Stay safe during the storms!
Thanks, Barb!

Nothing has incensed me more than watching the Anita Hill beat down by old, white, male Congressmen during the Clarence Thomas hearings. (Thomas, the gift that keeps giving thanks to those old, white, male Congressmen.) I vowed revenge on those asses, but I particularly despised Arlen Specter's conduct.
Therefore, I've named my strategy for the biggest ass of the asses. It may be ineffective, but it gives me great satisfaction. It's my little way of saying Fuck You.
I find who is running against a particularly offensive politician. And I send a contribution. (In the primary, I've even sent contributions to Republicans trying to keep someone like Specter or Chaffetz, from being on the ballot.) Then, of course, during the actual election period, I send a contribution to the Democrat trying to knock the asswipe out of office.
And each time I contribute to his opponent of either party, I contact asswipe to say, "I just want you to know that I've made a contribution to X in hopes that he/she can defeat you because I find you reprehensible. This voter says Fuck You to you."
And I smile. I smile when I make out the check, I smile when I mail the check. I smile when the check is cashed. I smile when I send the Fuck You message to asswipe. Whether my money helps defeat asswipe or not, I've tried. And it does wonders for my blood pressure.

One month into the unusual presidency of Donald Trump (R-Grifter), his most senior cabinet members were deployed to Brussels, Bonn and Munich this week to reassure nervous Europeans that everything would be okay.
The Europeans heard from Defense Secretary James Mattis that the NATO military alliance was not "obsolete" after all, despite Trump's repeated suggestions to the contrary.
And they were told by Vice President Mike Pence that Russia would be "held accountable" for its actions in Ukraine, despite Trump's friendly overtures to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
But if the aim of the visits was to reassure Europe that the pillars of U.S. foreign policy are fully intact, they fell short of the mark, European diplomats, politicians and analysts gathered in Munich said.
"What we heard here is not reassuring," Ruprecht Polenz, former head of the foreign affairs committee in the German parliament, told Reuters after Pence's speech to the Munich Security Conference. "There is absolutely no vision for how we are going to work together, going forward."
Swedes have been scratching their heads and ridiculing President Donald Trump's (R-Fabulist) remarks that suggested a major incident had happened in the Scandinavian country.
During a rally in Florida on Saturday, Trump said "look what's happening last night in Sweden" as he alluded to past terror attacks in Europe. It wasn't clear what he was referring to and there were no high-profile situations reported in Sweden on Friday night.
The comment prompted a barrage of social media reaction on Sunday, with hundreds of tweets, and a local newspaper published a list of events that happened on Friday that appeared to have no connections to any terror-like activity.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Catarina Axelsson said that the government wasn't aware of any "terror-linked major incidents." Sweden's Security Police said it had no reason to change the terror threat level.
Former Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt tweeted , "Sweden? Terror attack? What has he been smoking? Questions abound."
More than a million penguins have traveled to Argentina's Punta Tombo peninsula during this year's breeding season, drawn by an unusual abundance of small fish.
Local officials say that's a record number in recent years for the world's largest colony of Magellanic penguins, offering an especially stunning spectacle for the tens of thousands of people who visit the reserve annually.
The peninsula's tiny islets are well-suited to nesting and have sardines and anchovies close to the shoreline. The flightless birds come on shore in September and October and stay while the males and females take turns caring for their eggs and hunting for food.
The warm-weather birds breed in large colonies in southern Argentina and Chile and migrate north as far as southwestern Brazil between March and September.

The scientists at the event said they want President Donald Trump's administration to recognize evidence of climate change and take action on various environmental issues.

Speakers at a Vatican-sponsored conference in Northern California - including an archbishop - denounced President Donald Trump's (R-Pendejo) orders on immigration and travel and vowed to fight them at a meeting Friday.
Los Angeles Archbishop Jose Gomez said President Barack Obama deported a high number of people, but the harsh tone and cruelty coming out of the new administration was prompting mass fear and panic.
"They're playing with people's emotions and toying with their lives and futures, and that is not right," said Gomez, who noted his city has an estimated 1 million people who are living in the country illegally.
Talk at the four-day conference on economic inequality in Modesto, California, was bound to collide with the new president because the agenda involved housing, migration and worker dignity.
Modesto lies in California's agricultural heartland where Latino immigrants represent a significant part of the labor force for the area's farmers. The meeting was being held in the United States for the first time after Pope Francis nearly three years ago launched global meetings to explore the "economy of exclusion."
A yearlong academic study of sex trafficking in Las Vegas is providing a glimpse into a shadowy world beneath the neon glow where underage girls, threatened by pimps, solicit for business in casinos, on streets and online.
Of 190 identified sex-trafficking victims in 2014, Arizona State University researchers found two-thirds were under 18 years old, one in five was brought to southern Nevada from somewhere else and more than half were never reported as missing.
A victim advocate in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Elynne Greene, called them "throwaway kids." She said many are products of the foster care system.
The average underage victim in the study was 16. The youngest was 12.
About one in three victims was recruited by a boyfriend-turned-"violent, fear-based" abuser, with more than half reporting being forced through physical assault involving a gun, knife, razor or cord.
When Republican Congressman Jason Chaffetz (R-Bought & Paid For) of Utah introduced legislation last month to transfer about 3 million acres of federally-held public land to state control, he was bombarded by thousands of angry phone calls, letters and social media posts urging him to back off.
The pressure came not only from liberal environmentalists - but also from gun-toting, often conservative outdoors enthusiasts who are central to Chaffetz' political base. Both camps fear that transferring federal lands to state control could open them up to drilling and coal mining rather than recreation and preservation.
"I hear you," Chaffetz wrote in a post on his Instagram account announcing the withdrawal of the bill. "I am a proud gun owner, hunter and love our public lands."
Outdoor sporting groups - long associated with conservatism because of their support for guns rights and small government - are now collaborating with the environmental left to fight U.S. President Donald Trump's (R-Crooked) push to open more public lands to energy development. Such areas include national forests, parks and Native American tribal territories and account for about one fifth of the United States.
Recent funding data from the Foundation Center database, which aggregates information from tax filings, shows groups such as the Backcountry Hunters and Anglers and the Outdoor Alliance have accepted grants from big environmental and liberal foundations, including the Turner Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
The Israeli branch of Swedish furniture giant Ikea has apologised for issuing a catalogue aimed at Jewish ultra-Orthodox customers containing no images of women.
The catalogue was a first such attempt to reach out to the ultra-Orthodox community, which makes up around 10 percent of Israel's population and lives in compliance with a strict interpretation of Jewish laws.
The male-only catalogue, featuring ultra-Orthodox models, was published in addition to the regular brochure.
According to news website Ynet, the male-only catalogue highlights items in demand among ultra-Orthodox families, which tend to be large, such as bunk beds and bookshelves to handle extensive collections on Jewish law.
The cover shows an ultra-Orthodox man gazing into an open book standing next to a bookshelf packed with Jewish scriptures and a large silver menorah candelabrum, with two boys playing on the carpet nearby.

Adolf Hitler's personal telephone, which the Fuehrer used to dictate many of his deadly World War II commands, sold at auction on Sunday for $243,000, the US house selling it announced.
Originally a black Bakelite phone, later painted crimson and engraved with Hitler's name, the relic was found in the Nazi leader's Berlin bunker in 1945 following the regime's defeat.
The auction house Alexander Historical Auctions, which did not reveal the winning bidder's identity, had estimated its worth between $200,000 and $300,000. The starting bid was set at $100,000.
The Maryland company auctioned off more than a thousand items including the phone and a porcelain sculpture of an Alsatian dog for $24,300.
More than 70 years old, the Siemens rotary telephone is embossed with a swastika and the eagle symbolic of the Third Reich.
"The Great Wall" was a hit in China. In North America, it was a dud.
The most expensive film ever made in China and with a budget of $150 million, "The Great Wall" was intended to prove that the world's no. 2 movie marketplace could produce Hollywood-sized blockbusters of its own. Though it ran up $171 million in ticket sales in China, "The Great Wall" pulled in $18.1 million in its North American debut over Presidents Day weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday.
That was good enough for third place, falling behind last weekend's top two films, "The Lego Batman" and "Fifty Shades Darker." The Warner Bros. animated release easily led the box office again with $34.2 million in its second week, sliding only 35 percent. Universal's "Fifty Shades Darker" sold $21 million in tickets in its second week. The erotic sequel continues to play well overseas, where it led international business with $43.7 million over the weekend.
Two other new releases, both from 20th Century Fox, also failed to catch on. The comedy "Fist Fight," starring Ice Cube and Charlie Day as feuding high-school teachers, opened with $12 million.
And Gore Verbinski's gothic horror "A Cure for Wellness" - his follow-up to the box-office bomb "The Lone Ranger" - made just $4.2 million, a result that won't help the director's standing in the industry. On Friday, Fox apologized for using fake news stories to promote the film.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to comScore. Where available, the latest international numbers also are included. Final four-day domestic figures will be released Tuesday.
1. "The Batman Lego Movie," $34.2 million ($21.5 million international).
2. "Fifty Shades Darker," $21 million ($43.7 million international).
3. "The Great Wall," $18.1 million ($19 million international).
4. "John Wick: Chapter 2," $16.5 million ($15.6 million international).
5. "Fist Fight," $12 million.
6. "Hidden Figures," $7.1 million ($7.3 million international).
7. "Split," $7 million ($8.9 million international).
8. "A Dog's Purpose," $5.6 million.
9. "La La Land," $4.5 million ($31.7 million international).
10. "A Cure for Wellness," $4.2 million ($4.5 million international).
