Trivia Question from Yesterday

In 1969, what vocal group became the first Motown Records act to win a Grammy Award?

       The Temptations                                                      Source

The Temptations is an American vocal group who released a series of successful singles and albums with Motown Records during the 1960s and 1970s. The group's work with producer Norman Whitfield, beginning with the Top 10 hit single "Cloud Nine" in October 1968, pioneered psychedelic soul, and was significant in the evolution of R&B and soul music. The band members are known for their choreography, distinct harmonies, and dress style. Having sold tens of millions of albums, the Temptations is among the most successful groups in popular music.

Featuring five male vocalists and dancers (save for brief periods with fewer or more members), the group formed in 1960 in Detroit, Michigan under the name The Elgins. The founding members came from two rival Detroit vocal groups: Otis Williams, Elbridge "Al" Bryant, and Melvin Franklin of Otis Williams & the Distants, and Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams of the Primes. In 1964, Bryant was replaced by David Ruffin, who was the lead vocalist on a number of the group's biggest hits, including "My Girl" (1964), "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" (1966), and "I Wish It Would Rain" (1967). Ruffin was replaced in 1968 by Dennis Edwards, with whom the group continued to record hit records such as "Cloud Nine" (1969) and "Ball of Confusion (That's What the World Is Today)" (1970). The group's lineup has changed frequently since the departures of Kendricks and Paul Williams from the act in 1971. Later members of the group have included singers such as Richard Street, Damon Harris, Ron Tyson, and Ali-Ollie Woodson, with whom the group scored a late-period hit in 1984 with "Treat Her Like a Lady".

Over the course of their career, the Temptations released four Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles and fourteen R&B number-one singles. Its music has earned three Grammy Awards. The Temptations was the first Motown recording act to win a Grammy Award - for "Cloud Nine" in 1969 - and in 2013 received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.        Source

Cloud Nine: The Temptations

Alan J was first, and correct, with:
   The Temptations.

Dave wrote:
The Temptations. "Cloud Nine" won for best R&B song by a group. It seems unreal that it took so long for a Motown act to break through in the Grammys, considering the amount of stellar output in the '60s. Ironically, the Cloud Nine album was the first for the Temptations after firing David Ruffin, who I don't believe ever won a Grammy, although before his death Ruffin was inducted into the Rock and Roll HOF for his work with the Temps.
Interestingly, Motown head Barry Gordy didn't want to release "Cloud Nine" as a single because he thought it was a "drug song."

Cal in Vermont answered:
Cloud Nine by the Temps. Huh.

Rosemary in Columbus replied:
   Temptations

zorch said:
The Temptations with their hit Cloud Nine.

Micki responded:
   Cloud Nine by The Temptations.

Roy, Still Blue, Still in Red Texas wrote:
The Temptations, with their title track, Cloud Nine, were the first Motown group to snag a Grammy in 1969!

Deborah said:
Ah, Motown, one of my favorite music genres. The Temptations were the first Motown act to receive a Grammy.
A cold, sunny day. A good day to harvest the oranges left on the tree (recent storms have knocked off a couple dozen).

Adam answered:
   The Temptations

Jim from CA, retired to ID responded:
   The Temptations

Barbara, of Peppy Tech fame, replied:
The answer is The Temptations for "Cloud Nine."

Billy in Cypress U$A said:
   The Temptations is today's answer.
And, here is another bit of trivia for tomorrow, "Presidents' Day", is that New Mexico will celebrate a state holiday "Presidents' Day", on Friday, November 29, 2019, the day after Thanksgiving. Details here (including Georgia and Indiana):

Anecdotes - Friends

• While arguing for a certain bill, Congressmen Ben Butler of Massachusetts referred to "my friends on the other side of the House." Congressmen William Niblack of Indiana objected to this choice of words, saying, "The gentleman from Massachusetts will relieve us on this side of the House from some embarrassment if he will cease to call us his friends."

• H.L. Mencken once told a group of friends at a party, "When I was a youngster in Baltimore the girls in the sporting houses used to call me Professor." His host's wife, Betty Compson, looked at him closely, then joked, "I thought your face was familiar."

• Chastity Bono, the daughter of Sonny Bono and Cher, was still a teenager when she said to her best friend, "Gina, I have something to tell you. I think I'm gay." Gina's reaction was excellent - she shrugged and said, "What's the big deal?"

• Rudolf Nureyev and Leonard Bernstein lived very close to each other in the Dakota on Central Part West in New York City. In fact, their apartments were separated by a party wall, and they used to tap on the wall occasionally to say hi to each other.

• Senator Henry Clay once saw President Martin Van Buren surrounded by people and so he told him, "You have many friends, my dear Van Buren." The President pulled him aside and said to him, "Well, you see, the weather is very fine today."

• A Gentile and a Jew were great friends. One day, the Gentile told the Jew, "My friend, thou art not a Jew but a Christian." The Jew replied, "My friend, these qualities which you see in me and call Christian, I see in you and call Jewish."

• Quaker humorist Tom Mullen has a black friend who tells him that he would look a lot better if he had some color in his cheeks - and in the rest of his body.

• "It is at all times easier to make friends than enemies." - George Washington.

Perform On Oscars

Bette Midler

Bette Midler will perform "The Place Where Lost Things Go" at the Oscar ceremonies on Feb. 24, Variety has learned.

Midler, a longtime friend of composer-lyricist Marc Shaiman, will sing the song originally performed by Emily Blunt in "Mary Poppins Returns." The song, by Shaiman and his lyricist partner Scott Wittman, is one of five nominees for best original song.

Shaiman is expected to accompany Midler on piano.

Midler is a two-time Best Actress nominee (for 1979's "The Rose" and 1991's "For the Boys"). During the 2014 Oscarcast, she sang "Wind Beneath My Wings" - the song that Shaiman suggested Midler sing in the film "Beaches," and which has now become a signature Midler song. He worked as her musical director for many years.

Shaiman is also an Oscar veteran. In addition to having performed on the broadcast, he has twice been musical director for the show and won a 1992 Emmy for supplying host Billy Crystal's musical medley.

'SNL'

Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che lampooned President Trump's laughable Friday press conference in which he announced he signed a national emergency declaration to fund his pet project border wall with Mexico.

Jost started the segment pointing out just how bizarre Trump's behavior was during the presser, joking that Trump, "argued that we need a wall to stop the flow of drugs into our country, and to demonstrated how bad the drug problem is, Trump spent twenty minutes doing an impression of a coke addict."

Then, of course, they moved on to the widely-mocked portion of the news conference where Trump explained, in an odd sing-song voice, the winding court process that would likely take place to get his national emergency declaration enacted. After playing the clip, Jost imitated Trump's weird sing-song tone and snarked, "Oh my God. That guy controls our nuclear weapons."

Friday night on MSNBC's All In with Chris Hayes, Hayes showed a mash-up of where Trump may have gotten the almost exact wording to explain the declaration's potential legal process. Wait for it… yep, you guessed it! He got it from Fox News' Sean Hannity.

Grand Ole Opry

William Shatner

Actor William Shatner boldly went where no "Star Trek" captain has gone before when he took the stage for the first time for the Grand Ole Opry radio show to sing from his new album of country songs.

Shatner made his Opry debut on Friday night in Nashville, Tennessee, on the famed country music radio show along with Jeff Cook of the band Alabama. Together they released a country album called "Why Not Me," which features songs like "Beam Me Up," a nod to both whiskey maker Jim Beam and Shatner's catchphrase on the popular sci-fi TV show.

The 87-year-old actor told the AP that while he's not a typical singer, he understands the musicality of language. He's released several albums including Christmas music and rock, and has plans to record a blues album next.

Record Gathering

Smurfs

A group of German friends claimed a world record Saturday for the highest number of smurfs, gathered in one place.

Fans of the blue elf-like creatures created in a Belgian comic strip in 1950s, managed to gather 2,762 people dressed and painted blue in the regulation smurf attire -- curly hats and all.

The gathering took place at the town of Lauchringen, near the German border with Switzerland, the organisers reported on Facebook.

Their record came three years after their first attempt failed to beat the record held by Welsh students who managed to unite 2,510 regulation smurfs in Swansea back in 2009.

The rules of the game are strict: the only people counted as the genuine article are those with any bare skin painted blue and the rest of the body clothed in smurf attire.

Allies Unite

Europe

In 2009, then U.S. Vice President Joe Biden came to Munich to "press the reset button" with Russia. A decade later he came again to offer the world better relations, this time with his own country.

Promising that "America will be back" once Donald Trump (R-OfVlad) leaves office, Biden won a standing ovation at the Munich Security Conference from delegates who find the president's brusque foreign policy stance hard to like.

But their elation also exposed the weakened state of Western diplomacy in the face of Trump's assertiveness, according to European diplomats and politicians who were present.

Biden's successor, Mike Pence, was met with silence at a reception in the palatial Bavarian parliament on Friday evening after he delivered his signature line: "I bring you greetings from the 45th president of the United States, President Donald Trump."

His four-day trip to Europe succeeded only in deepening divisions with traditional allies over questions such as Iran and Venezuela and offered little hope in how to deal with threats ranging from nuclear arms to climate change, diplomats and officials said.

Incan Tomb Discovered

Peru

Peruvian archaeologists discovered an Incan tomb in the north of the country where an elite member of the pre-Columbian empire was buried, one of the investigators announced Friday.

The discovery was made on the Mata Indio dig site in the northern Lambayeque region, archaeologist Luis Chero told state news agency Andina.

Archaeologists believe the tomb belonged to a noble Inca based on the presence of "spondylus," a type of sea shell always present in the graves of important figures from the Incan period, which lasted from the 12th to the 16th centuries.

The tomb had been broken into multiple times, possibly in search of treasure. But despite evidence of looting, archaeologists recovered items including vases.

Chero said the findings "demonstrate the majesty and importance of this site," located 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) north of the capital Lima, and 2,000 kilometers from Cusco -- capital of the Inca empire which stretched from southern Colombia to central Chile.

Some Paintings Have 'Art Acne'

Georgia O'Keeffe

Like pubescent children, the oil paintings of Georgia O'Keeffe have been breaking out with "acne" as they age, and now scientists know why.

Tiny blisters, which can cause paint to crack and flake off like dry skin, were first spotted forming on the artist's paintings years ago. O'Keeffe, a key figure in the development of American modern art, herself had noticed these knobs, which at first were dismissed as sand grains kicked up from the artist's New Mexico desert home and lodged in the oil paint.

Now researchers have identified the true culprit: metal soaps that result from chemical reactions in the paint. The team has also developed a 3-D image capturing computer program, described February 17 at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, to help art conservators detect and track these growing "ailments" using only a cell phone or tablet.

O'Keeffe's works aren't the first to develop such blisters. Metal soaps, which look a bit like white, microscopic insect eggs, form beneath the surfaces of around 70 percent of all oil paintings, including works by Rembrandt, Francisco de Goya and Vincent van Gogh. "It's not an unusual phenomenon," says Marc Walton, a materials scientist at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.

Scientists in the late 1990s determined that these soaps form when oil paint's negatively charged fats, which hold the paint's colored pigments together, react with positively charged metal ions, such as zinc and lead, in the paint. This reaction creates liquid crystals that slowly aggregate beneath a painting's surface, causing paint layers on the surface to gradually bulge, tear and eventually flake off.

Cremona, Italy

Violin Museum

Inside the concert hall of the Violin Museum in Cremona, Italy, Antonio de Lorenzi plays the prelude from Bach's Partita No. 3 on a Stradivarius violin. Cremona is the town where master luthier Antonio Stradivari crafted his storied instruments three centuries ago.

But there's no guarantee that his instruments' inimitable sound will survive for centuries more, says Fausto Cacciatori, the museum's chief conservator.

"What will these instruments sound like in 200 years? I hope they can still be played," he says. "But you never know. All it takes is one unfortunate event. An earthquake, for instance. Think about what happened to so much art during World War II."

Cacciatori says Stradivarius instruments need a 21st century failsafe - and someone who understands music as well as technology to pull it off.

Enter deejay Leonardo Tedeschi.

Weekend Box Office

'Alita'

The sci-fi fantasy "Alita: Battle Angel" topped the charts and beat out a number of newcomers including the meta romantic comedy "Isn't It Romantic" and the horror sequel "Happy Death Day 2U" in its first weekend in theaters, but it is a victory with a few caveats. It's leading the slowest Presidents Day weekend at the box office in almost 20 years and has a ways to go to make up its costly budget.

20th Century Fox said Sunday that the James Cameron-produced film earned an estimated $27.8 million over the weekend against a reported $170 million budget, which includes cost-saving tax incentives and rebates. It's made $36.5 million total since its debut Thursday.

The rest of the charts remained fairly lackluster as well. Last week's champ, "The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part," fell 38 percent in its second weekend earning $21.2 million, bringing its total to $62.7 million - which is less than the first film earned in its opening weekend.

Warner Bros. also had the No. 3 movie this weekend with its meta-romantic-comedy "Isn't It Romantic," starring Rebel Wilson as a woman who bonks her head and wakes up in a rom-com. It debuted to $14.2 million and has earned $20.5 million since its opening earlier in the week.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Where available, the latest international numbers for Friday through Sunday are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Tuesday.

1."Alita: Battle Angel," $27.8 million ($56.2 million international).
2."The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part," $21.2 million ($12.1 million international).
    3."Isn't It Romantic," $14.2 million.
4."What Men Want," $10.9 million ($2.2 million international).
    5."Happy Death Day 2U," $9.8 million ($11.8 million international).
    6."Cold Pursuit," $6 million ($1.5 million international).
    7."The Upside," $5.6 million ($466,000 international).
    8."Glass," $3.9 million ($3.6 million international).
    9."The Prodigy," $3.2 million.
   10."Green Book," $2.8 million ($9 million international).
