Henry Rollins: The Chris Christie Chronicles (LA Weekly)
I have been monitoring the saga of New Jersey governor Chris Christie with an interest level somewhere between mild and none. The only parts of this multiple-month affair that I truly care about is if anyone's lives were endangered by this suspect lane closing on the George Washington Bridge. Beyond that, I feel bad for the countless commuters who were inconvenienced.
The title Lord of Mann (Manx: Çhiarn Vannin) is used on the Isle of Man to refer to the island's Lord Proprietor and head of state. The current holder of the title is Queen Elizabeth II.

Marian was first, and correct, with:
Queen Elizabeth. I am not going to be here the next couple of days. Going back to Philly to bury my last maternal aunt, Mildred, who was a surrogate Grandmother to my kids. Her funeral is being held on the day my Dad died and I am flying into Philly the same day that I did three years ago to say goodbye to him. Now with the weather once again snowing I might not even land on time. Nice news, today is my grandsons 3rd birthday and the party (and Superbowl Party) is being held at our house. When will I find time to pack?

Officially, Queen Elizabeth II

Not a clue do I have. I do have my suspicions that it's a totally meaningless position, but like I said, not a clue do I have.
My guess is King Lionbiter the 3rd, because I think it'd be amusing if some royal person got the position based solely on
their title. I am positive it isn't Chris Christie, or Woody Allen, though.

The Isle of Man is one of those quaint, quirky, little Anglo-entities - feudal holdovers. They are not part of the UK (although, they are citizens thereof), nor the Commonwealth of Nations (former colonies), not even of the EU... They are a 'Crown Dependency' like the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey (both 'Bailiwicks') near the French Normandy coast. Domestically autonomous (albeit under the scrutiny of the Crown Privy Council... and the Queen) they even print their own currency and postage. The Channel Islands are nominally overseen by the Duke of Normandy who is - Surprise! - Ol' Bess the Second, herself...

The title Lord of Mann is used on the Isle of Man to refer to the island's Lord Proprietor and head of state. The current holder of the title is Queen Elizabeth II.
The title is not correctly used on its own. Since 1399, the Kings and Lords of Mann existed in a position of feudality as vassals of the reigning King of England, and subsequently of Great Britain and the United Kingdom, who was the ultimate sovereign of the island. This right of 'Lord Proprietor' was revested into the Crown by the Isle of Man Purchase Act 1765 and hence ceased to exist separately. King George III became the first British monarch to rule the Isle of Man as 'Lord of Mann' in 1769. However, for reasons of culture and tradition, the title Lord of Mann continues to be used. For these reasons, the correct formal usage, as used on the Isle of Man for the Loyal Toast, is The Queen, Lord of Mann.

Mary Scanlon had no idea a $3 purchase from a Goodwill store in Phoenix would turn out to be a rare link to the civil rights movement's most revered leader.
Last April, Scanlon was at the thrift store when she spotted a pile of 35 vintage reel-to-reel tapes, including one labeled with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s name. Despite the moldy and torn packaging, she snapped up all of them.
Arizona State University archivists have found that tape is the only known recording of speeches the slain civil rights leader gave at ASU and at a Phoenix church in June 1964. The hour-long audio has since been digitized and is now available for listening on ASU's website through June 30.
Rob Spindler, a university archivist and curator, said it's miraculous that the audio was still intact. When he first spoke with Scanlon, he immediately warned her not to try and play the tape.
The tapes were taken from the Ragsdale Mortuary, which was owned by Lincoln Ragsdale, a civil rights leader in Phoenix who died in 1995, Goodwill employees said. Spindler sent the tapes to a company in Kentucky to copy them to a digital format. On May 17, Spindler, Scanlon, a university librarian and two ASU professors who have researched King gathered to listen to the recording for the first time. Hearing King's voice brought most of them to tears.

"Frozen" was named the Best Animated Feature of 2013 at the Annie Awards, the top awards show devoted strictly to animation.
The film won in a field of seven nominees that included all five Oscar nominees in the Best Animated Feature category, and also took awards for directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, voice actor Josh Gad and its production design and music.
As usual in the aftermath of an overhaul of the voting process three years ago, Annies voters from the International Animated Film Society, ASIFA-Hollywood spread the wealth. In addition to Disney's "Frozen," other films winning multiple awards included DreamWorks Animation's "The Croods" (animated effects, character design and character animation) and Pixar's "Monsters University" (storyboarding and editorial). Studio Ghibli's "The Wind Rises" won for Hayao Miyazaki's screenplay.
The films "Pacific Rim" and "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" won for animated effects in live-action films.
"Futurama" won the award for top general-audience TV show, while "Disney Sofia the First" and "Adventure Time" won for pre-school and children's audiences.
The writers of "Her" and "Captain Phillips" were given top honors by their peers on Saturday at the annual Writers Guild Awards, a strong predictor of success in the screenplay categories at the Oscars in a month's time.
Spike Jonze won the best original screenplay award for "Her," a tale set in the near future about a man in a romantic relationship with a lifelike computer operating system.
Alex Gibney, the writer and director of the documentary "We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks," was given a special award for the script that best embodies constitutional rights and civil liberties.
Writers for AMC Networks Inc's "Breaking Bad," a cable TV drama series about a cancer-stricken chemistry teacher who begins making illegal drugs to support his family, added to its victory lap of awards winning for best TV drama and best TV drama episode.
The writers of HBO political satire "Veep" won for best TV comedy and Netflix Inc's political thriller "House of Cards" won for best new TV series.

"Gravity" cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki won his third American Society of Cinematographers Award on Saturday night, picking up the top feature-film prize from the ASC for a film that is also expected to bring the acclaimed cinematographer his first Oscar.
Honoring his high-tech accomplishment in working with director Alfonso Cuaron to create and photograph the film's near-space environment, Lubezki won against an unprecedented field in the ASC's top film category.
Because of a three-way tie for fifth place, the ASC had seven nominees in the category, more than ever before, with Oscar nominees "Gravity," "The Grandmaster," "Inside Llewyn Davis," "Nebraska" and "Prisoners" joined by "Captain Phillips" and "12 Years a Slave."
In the television categories, Jonathan Freeman won for the "Game of Thrones" episode "Valar Dohaeris" in the one-hour series category, while Blake McClure won for the half-hour series "Drunk Detroit." Jeremy Benning won the miniseries award for "Killing Lincoln."
Honorary awards went to Dean Cundey ("Halloween," "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," Apollo 13"), who received the ASC's Lifetime Achievement Award; Eduardo Serra ("The Wings of the Dove," "Girl With the Pearl Earring"), who received the International Achievement Award; and Richard Rawlings, Jr. ("Charlie's Angels," "L.A. Law," "Paradise"), who received the Career Achievement in Television Award.
Woody Allen called Dylan Farrow's allegations of child molestation "untrue and disgraceful," signalling that he would fight renewed claims dating back to Allen's tempestuous relationship with actress Mia Farrow in the early 1990s.
The movie director's publicist Leslee Dart said in an email Sunday that Allen has read Dylan Farrow's open-letter, published online Saturday by The New York Times, claiming she was sexually assaulted when she was 7 by her then adoptive father.
Allen's lawyer Elkan Abramowitz also reacted: "It is tragic that after 20 years a story engineered by a vengeful lover resurfaces after it was fully vetted and rejected by independent authorities. The one to blame for Dylan's distress is neither Dylan nor Woody Allen."
Farrow's open-letter didn't urge renewed legal action, but a retrial for Allen in the court of public opinion. Farrow, who now lives in Florida, is married, and goes by another name, argued for fans of Allen's movies and actors who star in his films not to "turn a blind eye."
Which television network do most Americans flip to when seeking unbiased reporting? Well, the answer is not clear.
According to Public Policy Polling (PPP), a Democratic-leaning polling firm based in Raleigh, N.C., more Americans (35 percent) say they trust Fox News than any other television news network. This puts Fox ahead of all other networks including PBS (14 percent), ABC (11 percent), CNN (10 percent), CBS (9 percent), Comedy Central and MSNBC (6 percent each), and NBC (3 percent).
However, when assessing the "least trusted" network, Fox News also came in at No. 1, with 33 percent agreeing. MSNBC was the second least trusted network (19 percent), followed by Comedy Central (14 percent), CNN (11 percent), ABC (5 percent), CBS (4 percent), and NBC and PBS, which received 2 percent each.
The reason, PPP experts say, is party affiliation. Republicans are much more aligned with Fox News than are Democrats. In fact, 69 percent of Republicans prefer the network, with no other network polling above 7 percent for GOP viewers. Democrats are united more in their dislike of Fox News. Fifty-seven percent of Democrats agree that Fox News is the least trusted network; Comedy Central came in a distant second at 18 percent.
A clearer snapshot of television news allegiance might be this one: When PPP asked respondents what they thought of networks individually, PBS received the highest approval for trustworthiness (57 percent). Democrats were most likely to say it is trustworthy (80 percent to 6 percent), while Republicans were more evenly divided at 38 percent each.

An Egyptian court on Sunday acquitted a cameraman working for Al-Jazeera television and 61 others accused of taking part in clashes in Cairo, judicial sources said.
Mohamed Badr, an Egyptian, was arrested along with the others during clashes that erupted in Ramses Square in central Cairo, days after the July 3 ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi by the army.
Prosecution had accused them of "carrying out acts of violence and thuggery ... after an attempt to storm a police station and target police officers with firearms and birdshots".
Amnesty International secretary general Salil Shetty said the decision to prosecute the journalists "sends the chilling message that only one narrative is acceptable in Egypt today -- that which is sanctioned by the Egyptian authorities".

After years of squabbling, Harry Potter's best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger finally became an item -- but now their creator JK Rowling has admitted she made a mistake by marrying them off.
Hermione -- whose quick wits get the teen wizards out of many a scrape in Rowling's hit novels -- would have been better off with hero Harry, the British author said in comments published by the Sunday Times newspaper.
"For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron," Rowling says in an interview with Wonderland magazine, previewed by the Sunday Times and due out next Friday.
Rowling's interviewer in Wonderland was none other than British actress Emma Watson, who played Hermione in the blockbuster movie series based on the Potter books.
The actress agreed with Rowling, saying: "I think there are fans out there who know that too and who wonder whether Ron would have really been able to make her happy."

Pop star Katy Perry made Twitter history Friday, becoming the first person ever with more than 50 million followers on the microblogging website.
Twitter Counter, a service for tracking Twitter usage, said Perry had picked up tens of thousands of followers since Thursday, as she roared her way to 50,025,667.
Perry, 29, whose "Dark Horse" tops the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart this week, opted to say nothing Friday about her online achievement.

An Ohio man's family has fulfilled his dying wish - to be buried astride his beloved Harley-Davidson motorcycle encased in a see-through casket.
But it wasn't easy. The project required an extra-large cemetery plot to accommodate a Plexiglas casket for Billy Standley and his hulking custom-painted 1967 Electra Glide cruiser. Five embalmers worked to prepare his body with a metal back brace and straps to ensure he'll never lose his seat.
"He was a quirky man," daughter Dorothy Brown said. "But when it comes to us kids, he loved us, he raised us well and, of course, we wanted to help him."
Newspaper photos of the prepared casket showed Standley with his eyes closed astride the big bike. He was dressed in black leathers, a white helmet and glasses, his gloved hands grasping the handlebars.
He started the project himself, buying three extra burial plots next to his wife, Lorna. His sons, Pete and Roy, fashioned the casket out of Plexiglas, reinforcing the bottom with wood and steel rods to handle the extra weight.

With Super Bowl XLVII weekend in full swing, "Ride Along" remained strong, steering Universal Pictures into the No. 1 slot in a surprising three-week takeover at the box office.
Topping multiplex sales since setting a January debut record when opening over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend with $48.6 million, the buddy cop comedy, starring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube, made $12.3 million, as it nears a $100 million domestic total, according to studio estimates Sunday.
In the world of animation, Disney's "Frozen," now the fourth highest-grossing domestic animated release ever, is in second place with $9.3 million. The studio rereleased a singalong version of the film, as the movie's soundtrack remains No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. The film's signature track "Let It Go," sung by Idina Menzel, sits on the Billboard Hot 100 among the top 30. "Frozen" singalong shows, featured in 2,057 theatres out of 2,754, added $2.2 million, as the film crossed the $360 million mark domestically.
Another family film, Open Road Films' squirrel comedy "The Nut Job," took the fourth-place slot with $7.6 million, bringing its domestic total to $50 million over a three-week span.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theatres, according to Rentrak. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, 46, who won an Academy Award for the film "Capote," was found dead in his New York City apartment on Sunday in what a police source described as an apparent drug overdose.
Hoffman, who is survived by three children with his partner Mimi O'Donnell, had detailed his struggles with substance abuse in the past.
Born in upstate New York near Rochester, Hoffman won the best actor Oscar for the 2005 biographical film "Capote," in which he played writer Truman Capote. He also received three Academy Award nominations as best supporting actor, for "The Master" in 2013, "Doubt" in 2009 and "Charlie Wilson's War" in 2008.
After more than a dozen earlier roles, Hoffman burst onto the film scene in 1997's "Boogie Nights," in which he played a lovelorn gay man, in the movie about the porn industry that helped make Mark Wahlberg a star.
Hoffman appeared in blockbusters such as "Twister" and "The Hunger Games" series. But he was more often associated with the independent film world for his intense portrayals of often disturbing and complex characters in such films as "Happiness," in which he played an obscene phone caller, and "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead."
In the latter, he played a son who schemes to rob his parents' jewelry store, resulting in their deaths. But Hoffman could also play nice, as in "Magnolia," in which he played the role of an angelic nurse.
Hoffman also frequently appeared on Broadway, garnering Tony award nominations for "Death of a Salesman," "Long Day's Journey Into Night" and "True West."
