From Harrop: Between 'Inspiration' and Health Care (creators.com)
Why so many Americans want their president to be a personal motivator and religious guide vexes me. You do want a leader with dignity and self-control, but attending to the economy, national defense, foreign affairs, the environment and other
Susan Estrich: Unconventional Thinking (creators.com)
A long time ago, which is to say at least a month or two ago, I consoled some friends who were despairing of the nastiness of the Democratic race by telling them that whoever won would be the better candidate for it, and that we might need a real
Dan Danehy: The writers' strike has turned a fine TV season into a sad mess of reruns and reality (tucsonweekly.com)
For connoisseurs of television, this season was among the best of times, and has now become the worst of times. The ongoing strike by the Writers Guild of America is like the infliction of death by a thousand cuts as one by one, shows that were fortunate enough to have a few episodes in the can blinked into reruns five months too early. First off, I understand that there are some of you out there--superior beings, to be sure--who want nothing to do with TV.
David Day: "KEREN ANN: Shampoo commercials need not apply" (weeklydig.com)
Legions of indie-rock boys around the world have a behemoth-size crush on Keren Ann. I do not. I am a professional journalist with nothing but respect of Mlle. Anne, she of dual passports (French and Dutch), she of Russian- Javanese- Dutch- Israeli descent, she of softly cooed ballads on landmark albums like Not Going Anywhere.
Lorraine Carpenter: Gonna Make You Sweater (montrealmirror.com)
"I just wanted it really, really bad," says Leslie Hall, 26, flashing back to her race for high school prom queen. She made posters, she buttered up the prom committee and she wore a Goodwill gown and neck brace in the homecoming parade, winding up on the front page of the local newspaper for her trouble. "I went for 'crippled, poor and innocent,' and people loved it, they just ate it up. It's amazing what a little creative campaigning can getcha. "The crown, actually. It can get you the crown."
Anneli Rufus: Memoirist David Roche Faces His Disfigurement (eastbayexpress.com)
David Roche, a noted public speaker who counts Anne Lamott among his avid fans, writes with disarming frankness of his relationships, his political activism, his surgeries, his work as a massage therapist for the terminally ill, and his rides through San Francisco on public transit. During all of these, the focus is always, inescapably, on his face.

Okay, it's early for a sunday, so I'm guessing A.

Chico. By the way, his nickname, "Chico," came about because of his interest in the opposite sex, i.e., chicks.

Sally answered:
The oldest Marx Brother was "A" or Chick-o :)

Daniel Day-Lewis gave his Oscar chances a welcome boost on Sunday by landing the prize as best actor at the British Academy Film Awards for his searing portrayal of a driven oil prospector in "There Will be Blood."
French actress Marion Cotillard sprung the surprise of the night by scooping the best actress award for her role as singer Edith Piaf in "La Vie En Rose," while the romantic British wartime drama "Atonement" was picked as best film.
British actress Tilda Swinton was named best supporting actress for her role as a morally corrupt corporate lawyer in "Michael Clayton," while Spanish actor Javier Bardem was crowned best supporting actor for his chilling portrait of a killer in the bleak, modern-day western "No Country for Old Men."
"No Country for Old Men" also won the best director prize for filmmaking brothers Joel and Ethan Coen.
Diablo Cody won the best original screenplay award for "Juno," a teen pregnancy comedy that is also in line for Oscar glory on February 24.

As Hollywood's screenwriters gathered on Saturday to hear details of a contract to end their three-month-old strike, they also gave their top film writing awards to comedy "Juno" and drama "No Country for Old Men."
Instead of holding its annual dinner in Los Angeles, the west coast branch of the WGA issued only the statement of the winners, whereas the east coast division hosted an informal reception in New York to honor award nominees and winners.
Nonfiction film "Taxi to the Dark Side," which looks at U.S. torture practices in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, earned the honor for best documentary writing for Alex Gibney.
Elsewhere in TV categories, the writers of HBO's "The Wire" won for best TV drama, and NBC's "30 Rock" saw its writing staff win for top TV comedy.

A sunflower seed company says it has shipped nearly 6,000 bags of its salty snacks to USA Network to try to save a science fiction show. And the actor whose seed-spitting character inspired the campaign is loving every minute of it.
Fans of "The 4400" asked Wahpeton-based Giants Snacks LLC to help with the campaign after the cable network dumped the show in December. Many of the sales of Giants Sunflower Seeds are international orders, which the company does not normally accept.
The campaign, modeled after one by fans who sent peanuts to keep the CBS show "Jericho" alive, has the support of 4400 actor Jeffrey Combs. His character, Dr. Kevin Burkhoff, was the inspiration for the sunflower send-off.
Officials in the famously liberal California town of Berkeley have stirred a national fuss by telling U.S. Marine Corps recruiters they aren't welcome anymore and by aiding those protesting against them.
That stance is too much for some Republican lawmakers, who are threatening to retaliate by stripping the counter-culture city of about $5.3 million in federal and state dollars.
Last week, the Berkeley City Council agreed to send a letter to the Marines stating their recruiters were not welcome in the city and that those who stayed would be considered "uninvited and unwelcome intruders."
The council also applauded people who "impede" the recruiters' work and awarded a free parking permit to Code Pink, an anti-war group that demonstrates daily outside the Marine recruiting office in the city.

Australia will continue to photograph Japan's whaling fleet in the Southern Ocean, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said on Sunday, despite Japan's warning of a diplomatic protest over Australia's tough anti-whaling stance.
"Calling commercial whaling scientific whaling is not right, it's not accurate," Rudd told Australian television on Sunday.
Japan considers whaling to be a cherished cultural tradition. Despite agreeing to a whaling moratorium in 1986, Japan is allowed to conduct "scientific" whaling, and plans to hunt almost 1,000 minke and fin whales this Antarctic summer.
Australia, a strong opponent of whaling, has sent a customs ship to monitor Japan's whale hunt and to collect evidence for a possible international court challenge against the hunt.
If John R. Koza gets his way, American voters will never again have to wonder about the workings of the Electoral College and why it decides who sits in the White House.
Koza is behind a push to have states circumvent the odd political math of the Electoral College and ensure that the presidency always goes to the winner of the popular vote.
Basically, states would promise to award their electoral votes to the candidate with the most support nationwide, regardless of who carries each particular state.
The proposal is aimed at preventing a repeat of the 2000 election, when Al Gore got the most votes nationwide but George W. Bush put together enough victories in key states to win a majority in the Electoral College and capture the White House.

Residents near Peru's southern highland tourist destinations are fighting two government proposals to expand private development around Machu Picchu and other historical sites, including the ancient Inca capital of Cuzco.
Protesters, who burned tires and blocked roads around Cuzco last week, are threatening more unrest if Congress does not reject the two proposed laws, said Hugo Gonzales, president of the department of Cuzco where Machu Picchu is located, on Saturday.
PeruRail suspended the only train service to Machu Picchu on Thursday after protesters closed roads and blocked access to public transportation. Tourists were transported out of the affected areas in police vehicles.

Roy Scheider, the actor best known for his role as a police chief in the blockbuster movie "Jaws," has died. He was 75.
Scheider received two Oscar nominations, for best-supporting actor in 1971's "The French Connection" in which he played the police partner of Oscar winner Gene Hackman, and for best-actor for 1979's "All That Jazz," the autobiographical Bob Fosse film.
However, he was best known for his role in Steven Spielberg's 1975 film, "Jaws," the enduring classic about a killer shark terrorizing beachgoers and well as millions of moviegoers.
Widely hailed as the film that launched the era of the Hollywood blockbuster, it was also the first movie to earn $100 million at the box office. Scheider starred with Richard Dreyfuss, who played an oceanographer.
Scheider was also politically active. He participated in rallies protesting U.S. military action in Iraq, including a massive New York demonstration in March 2003 that police said drew 125,000 chanting activists.
