Without warning, without fuss, without apology and, apparently, without consulting any of the multitudinous people they might have been expected to consult, MeghanandHarry (aka the Duke and Duchess of Sussex) have announced that they are "stepping back" as senior members of the royal family. They intend to split their time between the UK and North America and "work to become financially independent" of what Harry's mother, Princess Diana, always called "the firm".

Trivia Question from Yesterday

Deltiology is the study and collection of ______?______

       Postcards                                                      Source

Deltiology is the study and collection of postcards. Professor Randall Rhoades of Ashland, Ohio, coined a word in 1945 that became the accepted description of the study of picture postcards. It initially took about 20 years for the name to appear in a dictionary. Compared to philately, the identification of a postcard's place and time of production can often be an impossible task because postcards, unlike stamps, are produced in a decentralised, unregulated manner. For this reason, some collectors choose to limit their acquisitions to cards by specific artists and publishers, or by time and location.

Worldwide deltiology is the third-largest collecting hobby after stamp collecting and coin/banknote collecting. Postcard clubs may be found in many countries; and these clubs, as well as related organizations, frequently host postcard shows. Online postcard clubs have also become popular. They mainly focus on providing their members with catalogs and features for tracking their collections and interacting with each other.        Source

Anecdotes

Problem-Solving

• Enrico Caruso was a strong believer in personal hygiene. Once, he and his wife accepted an invitation to sit in the box of a French tenor. However, after he was seated, Mr. Caruso turned to his host and said, "Monsieur, Madame cannot remain unless you go home and brush your teeth." The French tenor went home and brushed his teeth. By the way, according to Mr. Caruso's wife, Dorothy, in the course of each performance he lost three pounds.

• While in Milan to direct The Nutcrackernear the end of his career, Rudolf Nureyev handled an ultimatum by a principal dancer with finesse. As Mr. Nureyev was walking away from the set, the principal dancer said that she would not dance on opening night unless her boyfriend also had a leading part. Still walking, Mr. Nureyev ordered that another principal dancer be found to take her place. The ballerina immediately retracted her ultimatum.

• Opera singer Grace Moore often answered her own telephone; however, being a celebrity, she disguised her voice with a French accent until she learned who the caller was. Sometimes, she was unable to identify important callers and so would not speak to them. Discovering the truth later, they were not amused at the precaution she had taken to preserve her privacy.

• John "Trane" Coltrane used to play long saxophone solos, and once he told Miles Davis that he didn't know how to stop. Mr. Davis replied, "Try taking the saxophone out of your mouth." By the way, jazz musician Dizzy Gillespie started out playing the trombone as a kid, but he quickly switched to trumpet - he couldn't play all the notes on the trombone because his arms were too short.

• As a young boy, ballet student Alexander Godunov was short, even considering his age. After being told that tomato juice would make him grow, he began to drink gallons of it. He also heard that sleeping on a soft bed would keep him short, so he began to sleep on boards. Something worked - he grew to be over six feet tall.

• Even people who don't like classical music like Gioacchino Rossini's "Overture" to William Tell because it is the theme music of the Lone Ranger. According to Rossini, he wrote the music at a furious pace in an apartment on the Boulevard Montmartre in Paris because he was trying to block the noisy street from his mind.

• George Frideric Handel once had trouble with Francesca Cuzzoni, one of the singers in his opera Ottone. Being quite strong, Handel picked up Ms. Cuzzoni and held her out a window, two stories above the street, and threatened to drop her. Ms. Cuzzoni decided to sing her part the way Mr. Handel wanted her to.

• Conductor Claudio Abbado has an interesting way of dealing with an orchestra whose members speak too loudly during rehearsals. He speaks softer and softer and finally stops speaking entirely. At that point, the members of the orchestra realize that they need to be quiet in order for the rehearsal to proceed.

• Choreographer George Balanchine was remarkably unperturbed during crises. In 1954, shortly before the premiere of his Nutcracker ballet, he learned that the costumes weren't ready. Therefore, he picked up a needle and a costume and started sewing along with the seamstresses.

• Colonel W. de Basil sometimes insisted that he be photographed although the newspaper photographer really wanted only photographs of the Colonel's ballet troupe. In such cases, the photographer pretended to photograph the Colonel - but there wasn't any film in the camera.

• Tony Baines, a bassoonist for the London Philharmonic Orchestra, once made the error of showing up for the ballet in tails rather than black tie. No problem. He simply dipped his tie in black ink. Of course, it dripped all over his shirt, but he declined to let that bother him.

Limits on Trial Coverage

C-SPAN

News coverage of President Trump's impeachment trial in the Senate began last week with a Republican senator calling a CNN reporter "a liberal hack" in the halls of Congress and laughing about it later that night during a Fox News interview.

Things haven't improved much since.

Journalists are up in arms about new restrictions on their movement inside the Capitol, which they say will prevent them from easily interviewing lawmakers about the proceedings. The rules, negotiated by Republican Senate leadership, have yet to be written down, causing confusion among reporters and the Capitol Police expected to enforce them.

Even sedate C-SPAN is aggrieved, calling on the Senate to allow its television crews to document the trial, instead of the government-controlled cameras that - as was the case during Bill Clinton's trial 21 years ago - will limit what viewers see and hear inside the Senate chamber.

The pretrial tensions suggest that the bash-the-press mentality that led the White House to kill off the daily briefing and strip reporters of their credentials has now crept into what senators like to call "the world's greatest deliberative body."

Workout Playlist

Michelle Obama

It's no secret that former FLOTUS Michelle Obama puts in some serious time at the gym. But if you're wondering what jams help the bestselling author break a sweat, you're in luck. Obama, who celebrated her 56th birthday earlier this week, just released her 2020 workout playlist, and the list features everyone from Lizzo and Cardi B to Ed Sheeran and Ariana Grande.

"It's about that time when New Year's resolutions get a bit harder to stick to. To offer a little inspiration, I want to share my go-to #WorkoutPlaylist with you," Obama tweeted, sharing a two-part playlist featuring an upbeat section filled with hip-hop and R&B, followed by a cool-down section.

Scoring a spot on Obama's list of favorites is a highly coveted position for any artist. Lizzo posted a screenshot of Obama's playlist on her Instagram Stories.

Ariana Grande, who appears on the 2 Chainz track "Rule the World," was also clearly thrilled with the inclusion.

Obama, whose biceps are a particular favorite of the internet, is famed for going hard at the gym. Back in October, she posted a photo on her Instagram page which showed her baring her abs for the internet. Dressed in black leggings, a sports bra and a black hat, Obama was pictured lunging forward while hoisting a weighted ball above her head.

High At The Oscars

Al Pacino

Al Pacino had a memorable time at the Oscars back when he was celebrating his third nomination and it's not just because he was up for the main prize of the evening.

When The Irishman star was on Jimmy Kimmel Live earlier this week, he remembered the hilarious time he got high at the Academy Awards and had a wild encounter with Jeff Bridges. While Pacino's first nomination had come in 1973 for The Godfather, and his second for Serpico came next, it was his third nomination for The Godfather: Part II that stands out in his memory.

"I was sitting there and it wasn't at all like you'd expect," Pacino told Jimmy Kimmel. "I went and I was sat there in this big event and I was with a friend. I had a few things, you know. I was not completely myself. So everything was tolerable, you know? The nerves had calmed down. I was sitting there enjoying the show. I turned to Jeff Bridges - he was also nominated - and I said hi."

"But I said to him, 'I don't think they're going to get to the best actor category. It's an hour and they didn't get to that category,'" Pacino says. "He gave me a look to this day - I'll never forget it - like, 'Where do you come from, who are you?' and said, 'It's three hours.'"

"If you're so high that Jeff Bridges has to tell you what's going on… " Kimmel joked.

Going After Etsy Shops

Di$ney

Today in "What Did You Think Was Going To Happen?", The Verge is reporting that Disney has started sending out notices to Etsy creators, demanding that they take down unlicensed Baby Yoda merchandise. This is the same Disney that has fought to change copyright laws specifically to prevent Mickey Mouse from ever entering into the public domain, spent $4 billion buying Lucasfilm, and has its own line of lazy cash-in Baby Yoda toys it'll want people to buy months after The Mandalorian has faded into irrelevance. Basically, if you come between Disney and money, you better watch your back.

The Verge story says multiple shops have been notified that sales of their Baby Yoda items have been shut off after Etsy received complaints about them literally using words like "Star Wars" and "Yoda" in item descriptions-which, again, makes us wonder what anyone expected would happen. Etsy noted to The Verge that it "reserves the right to disable any listing, shop, or account" for infringing on someone else's intellectual property, so it's not like anyone is overstepping here (blame capitalism more than any evil mouse companies), but some of the sellers The Verge spoke to do seem a little annoyed about the hit their sales and views are taking.

One seller said she had been able to sell 200 Baby Yoda plush dolls before Disney caught on, but after removing all Star Wars-y words from her item descriptions, she's down to only getting "two to 10 views a day" on her page. The Verge theorizes that it was mainly the very popular Baby Yoda items that got flagged, which is why these people are still able to sell generic baby gremlin dolls that nobody can find with specific search terms. So, it seems like the issue here is less about Disney worrying that 200 sales on an Etsy shop are going to impact its bottom line and more about Disney not wanting people to say "I am selling this Star Wars thing that I made."

Once again, Disney can be a mean company that does shitty things, but it is allowed to do this thing. Also, Baby Yoda's not that great anyway. Maybe these Etsy sellers would be better off making something that's like… a cross between a penguin and a puffin, but it doesn't have a beak, and it has big black eyes and it likes to steal lightsabers? Errr, we mean generic laser swords... don't want anyone to get in trouble.

Slumping Sales

Gun Industry

Gun companies are gathering for their annual conference and trade show this week in Las Vegas at a pivotal moment for the industry amid slumping sales, a public increasingly agitating for restrictions on access to firearms and escalating tensions over gun control efforts.

The event, held by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the gun industry's lobbying group, will take place in Las Vegas - about 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) from the deadliest mass shooting modern U.S. history. An estimated 60,000 people are expected to attend, navigating a vast expanse of aisles filled with not just firearms but all sorts of accessories and industry-related apparel.

Gun sales normally taper off during Republican administrations because gun owners are not as compelled to stockpile weapons out of fear that lawmakers will impose restrictions on firearms. But the past three years under President Donald Trump (R-Grifter) have been particularly volatile, fueled in part by the Las Vegas shooting and other high-profile mass killings that have driven efforts to either restrict access to guns or to ban certain firearms and products.

Sagging gun sales have afflicted almost every corner of the industry, most notably iconic gun manufacturers such as Ruger, Remington and Colt.

Colt, one of the most storied firearms companies in the U.S., decided to suspend production of its AR-15 long guns. Sturm, Ruger and Co. Inc. saw sales slump about 20% last year and has reduced its workforce and production. Remington emerged from bankruptcy in 2018, but remains under scrutiny after being sued by families of victims of the Sandy Hook school shooting in which the perpetrator used an AR-15 made by the company.

'Mops And Buckets'

Americans

Donald Trump (R-Dolt) has launched a scathing attack on proposals to build a six-mile sea wall around New York, urging instead the city's residents to use "mops and buckets" to cope with climate change related disasters.

The US president, who has previously claimed global warming is a "hoax" invented by the China, branded plans for a sea wall in his hometown "costly, foolish and environmentally unfriendly" on Twitter on Saturday night.

Mr Trump tweeted: "A massive 200 Billion Dollar Sea Wall, built around New York to protect it from rare storms, is a costly, foolish & environmentally unfriendly idea that, when needed, probably won't work anyway.

"It will also look terrible. Sorry, you'll just have to get your mops & buckets ready!"

The price tag the world leader apportioned to the sea wall is not accurate - with the Army Corps of Engineers predicting the barrier would cost $119 billion and 25 years to construct.

Glaciers To Disappear Within 30 Years

Pyrenees

Glaciers will vanish from the Pyrenees mountain range within the next 30 years because of climate change and pollution, scientists have warned.

Glaciers have already shrunk by half in the past 20 years in the mountains on the border between France and Spain, according to a new report by scientists who monitor them for the local environmental group Moraine.

"Pyrenean glaciers are doomed," said Pierre René, an expert on glaciers. Mr René said it was impossible to give an exact date for their disappearance, but predicted that it would happen by 2050.

The report by the group, which has measured the length, surface area and thickness of nine of the 15 glaciers in the French Pyrenees for 18 years, says they are now shrinking at an annual rate of 3.6 hectares (nearly 8.9 acres).

The surface area of the nine glaciers now totals 79 hectares (195 acres) compared with 140 hectares (346 acres) 17 years ago.

Deepest Secrets?

Dreams

You jolt awake in the middle of the night, your heart pounding. It takes you a moment to realize that, no, you didn't just rush out for a job interview wearing nothing but a bath towel.

Depending on which dream interpretation dictionary you consult, you might find that your dream reveals anxiety about work, a sense of shame or embarrassment, or perhaps even a deeply repressed inner exhibitionist.

Given all these possibilities, is it true that dreams can reveal our deepest secrets?

Dreams can provide useful insights on our lives, but despite what Hollywood or your favorite novel might have you believe, there aren't any studies showing that dreams can lay bare our inner workings.

Humans have long sought meaning in dreams. Ancient Mesopotamians and Egyptians saw them as messages from the gods. Greeks and Romans used them to predict the future. But the belief that symbols in dreams harbor secret truths about ourselves originates with 19th-century psychologist Sigmund Freud. He proposed that dreams functioned as a kind of wish fulfillment, revealing our deeply repressed desires.

'Bad Boys for Life'
