Froma Harrop: Single-Payer Is Not Dead (Creators Syndicate)
The prospects for single-payer health care - adored by many liberals, despised by private health insurers and looking better all the time to others - did not die in the Affordable Care Act. It was thrown a lifeline through a little-known provision tucked in the famously long legislation. Single-payer groups in several states are now lining up to make use of Section 1332.
Paul Krugman: The Myth of the Deserving Rich (New York Times)
… what you see, over and over, is that they find ways to avoid talking about the one percent. They talk about the top quintile, or at most the top 5 percent; this lets them discuss rising incomes at the top as if we were talking about two married lawyers or doctors, not the CEOs and private equity managers who are actually driving the numbers. And this in turn lets them keep the focus on comfortable topics like family structure, and away from uncomfortable topics like runaway finance and the corruption of our politics by great wealth.
Robert Evans, Victoria Jane: 6 Shocking Realities of the Secret 'Troubled Teen Industry' (Cracked)
One night in August 2004, I awoke to a man and a woman in my room whom I had never seen before telling me that they were "escorts" and we were going to a place called "wilderness." I was not allowed to bring any belongings or tell anyone where I was going. I didn't know what "escorts" and "wilderness" were, and I was terrified. It was like being Liam Neeson's daughter in Taken, if it had turned out later that Liam Neeson arranged the whole thing.
Dana Stevens: My problem with 12 Years a Slave (Slate)
Last night, on less than four hours of sleep in a Park City, Utah, hotel room, I rewatched 12 Years a Slave-or at least as much of it as I could get through, because Lord, that movie takes it out of you-in the hopes of getting a little closer to being able to explain (and understand myself) why Steve McQueen's film, despite its many and real virtues, failed to make my 10-best list of the year.
Arthur Stanton Eric "Arte" Johnson (born January 20, 1929) is an American comic actor who was a regular on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. His best-remembered "character" was that of a German soldier with the catchphrase: "Verrrry interesting, but...['stupid', 'not very funny', and other variations]".
His other iconic Laugh-In character was "Tyrone F. Horneigh" (the last name pronounced "horn-eye," a "clean" variant of the vulgar term "horny"), the white-haired, trenchcoat-wearing "dirty old man" who repeatedly sought to seduce "Gladys Ormphby," (Ruth Buzzi's brown-clad "spinster" character) on a park bench. Tyrone would enter the scene, muttering a song (usually "In the Merry, Merry Month of May,") and spying Gladys on the bench, would sit next to her. He would ask two related "leading questions," each earning him a hard whack from a shocked Gladys using her purse. His third statement would be an appeal for medical assistance, at which time he would fall off the bench.
Referring to an only moderately popular candy made from caramel and walnuts, Tyrone would also frequently ask Gladys, "How about a Walnetto?"

You can get some dvd collections of them, which is how I got into the show, although apparently, the entire run of the series is not available.
You can see a short bit of a walnetto sketch in this brief set of Laugh-In clips.
Somehow I feel your trivia questions make me out to be a HUGE tv watcher, when actually I listen to tons more music than view programs.
I will confess that I'm really into watching FATHER TED lately.
If any of you reading like that show, try MY HERO starring the guy who portrayed Father Dougal. It's milder in comedic style, but still quite a hoot!

Tyrone F. Horneigh offered Walnettos to Gladys Ormphby on that horrible 70's TV show, "Rowan & Martin's laugh-in."
One can easily compare this show to the low-class, "Duck Dynasty" of today...
PS: Everyone is hunkered down for the big Bronco game today. The Denver Transit Authority has shut down the Mall Shuttle to protect the busses from the 'fans!' The animals come out of the stadium and walk a few blocks to the lower part of Downtown Denver to scream, shout, drink, and fight.
I think if they would just pass out the pot, it would save the city big bucks, and everyone would leave mellow, and happy...

I love how Marty posts the top concerts here on Bartcop E. I was pondering the list,
and wrote up which ones I'd attend. Which ones would you go to?
1. Beyoncé-
Sure. I bet it's a lot'ta show biz dancing and lighting and all. I'd go.
2. Pink-
Yes. I like her music.
3. Bon Jovi-
Probably a good show, so yeah.
4. Pearl Jam-
I wouldn't miss them. Plus, their new album is great.
5. Kanye West-
Yes, he's great and very creative.
6. Drake-
I'd go. I like the new album.
7. Michael Bublé-
No, I think I'd pass. I'm sure he's great, but not my thing, I think.
8.Trans-Siberian Orchestra-
I puzzled over this one. I bet they're excellent at what they do, but I'm not
so sure it would hold my interest. I'd probably go if I won tickets.
9. Dixie Chicks-
A solid yes. They are so wonderful in concert. Great people in person, too. We ran into them around town and
they put me and the Wife on the guest list when they heard we'd spent our ticket money on their albums. True
story!
10. Zac Brown Band-
I might go. I reckon he's pretty good, but now that I think more, just a short set of him would satisfy me.
11. Nine Inch Nails-
I'd miss my own funeral to see these guys. Excellent concert chops they have.
12. Alejandro Fernández-
Who? I'd need to know more before I could say.
13. John Mayer-
Sure. He's mighty entertaining.
14. Keith Urban-
I'd go if it was a short set. I clearly prefer Texas country music.
15. Selena Gomez-
Here's a surprise for you, but I'd go. I'm only familiar with her new album, but it's excellent.
16. Sarah Brightman-
Another poser of a choice. I'm not very familiar with her music, but she seems really good.
I think watching the TV series AUSTIN CITY LIMITS has me accustomed to 30-minute sets of artists like her.
17. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis-
Sure. I'd go. More than likely it'd be great.
18. Hillsong United-
Don't know them at all. Would hold off on that basis. Of course, now I'm curious.
19. Avenged Sevenfold-
OH YES! a band I really enjoy. Never seen them so far. They probably look like Nine Inch Nails, all in black
with piercings and tattoos. That I could take a pass on, but hearing them live would be worth it even if they
looked like cross-eyed baboons!
20. Bassnectar-
For sure. It's cool to see a techno group on the list. I can't figure how they managed it. They must have a really
good booking agent. A consistently superb act.
Thanks for indulging my musical musings. Now, we just have to decide if we can spare money for concerts!

Though they are not considered legally married in Utah, several gay and lesbian couples were feted with a wedding celebration as part of HBO's promotion of its upcoming documentary on gay marriage, "The Case Against 8."
The film, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on Saturday, chronicles two gay couples battling against Proposition 8, the California law approved by voters that banned gay marriage. It was eventually declared unconstitutional.
After the documentary's debut, a reception was held featuring the two couples at the center of the legal fight, along with the film's directors, Ben Cotner and Ryan White. The reception also featured gay couples at the center of a gay marriage battle in Utah. There was champagne and a wedding cake celebrating their unions, although the legality of them is in dispute.
Last month, more than 1,000 same-sex couples wed in Utah after a federal judge declared the state's ban on gay marriage unconstitutional. The state is appealing, and the Supreme Court put a halt on same-sex weddings until the case is resolved. In the meantime, Utah is not recognizing those marriages, although the federal government does.
The future is looking bright at NBC for Golden Globe winner Amy Poehler, not so much for Michael J. Fox.
NBC entertainment president Robert Greenblatt said Sunday that Poehler's "Parks & Recreation" will be back for a seventh season next fall. Poehler, host of last week's Golden Globe ceremony, won a Globe for best comedy actress for her role as a small town bureaucrat.
Greenblatt, at a news conference, couldn't hide his disappointment with the performance of Michael J. Fox's Thursday comedy - "The Michael J. Fox Show" - although he made no official comment about its prospects beyond this year.
"We like that show, we like Sean Hayes' show, too," Greenblatt said. "We're really unhappy that we can't find an audience for them in those time periods."

Zhou Yeling dragged herself out of bed at 5 a.m. for a long-awaited date with her favorite Englishman - Sherlock Holmes.
Zhou, 19, watched the third season premiere of the BBC's "Sherlock" on Jan. 2 on the British broadcaster's website. Two hours later, the episode started showing with Chinese subtitles on Youku.com, a video website. Youku says it was viewed more than 5 million times in the first 24 hours, becoming the site's most popular program to date.
"Sherlock" has become a global phenomenon, but nowhere more than in China, which was one of the first countries where the new season was shown.
Holmes is known in China as "Curly Fu," after his Chinese name, Fuermosi, and star Benedict Cumberbatch's floppy hair. Watson, played by Martin Freeman, is Huasheng, a name that sounds like "Peanut" in Mandarin. They have become two of the most popular terms in China's vast social media world.
President Vladimir Putin said Sunday that Russia does not discriminate against gays and that millions of Russians love pop icon Elton John "despite his orientation", as he sought to defuse calls from gay rights activists to boycott the Winter Olympics.
In an interview with foreign journalists less than three weeks before the opening of the Olympics in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, Putin reiterated that Russia would welcome all athletes and visitors, regardless of their sexuality.
By way of example, he praised John, who is openly gay, as "an outstanding person (and) outstanding musician".
"Millions of our people sincerely love him despite his orientation," Putin said.

It was a successful experiment in recovering an endangered species - too successful, for some, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service now ponders lifting protections for transplanted Canadian grey wolves across the United States.
Almost two decades ago, the wolves were relocated to Yellowstone National Park in an effort to return them to where the animals had been hunted to extinction.
The change would result in hunting the nocturnal predators at a time when conservationists feel the animals are only beginning to gain a foothold and the federal agency is facing numerous lawsuits from those opposed to the wolf being removed from the endangered species list.
"I think it was successful in that it demonstrated that clearly it can be done," Paul Paquet, a senior scientist at the Raincoast Conservation Foundation and adjunct professor at the University of Victoria, says of the reintroduction effort.
The problem lies not in whether the wolves can adapt, says Paquet, but whether people who have lived without the top-tier predators for generations can do so. He believes the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service should not lift the endangered designation.
Lawmakers for at least two U.S. states say they should conduct executions by firing squad if opposition to capital punishment by pharmaceutical companies makes it hard to obtain drugs for lethal injections.
States have turned to pharmacies that customize drugs and adopted untested new mixes after supplies of traditional execution drugs were cut off by manufacturers opposed to their use for the procedure.
The debate over lethal injections was reignited on Thursday when an inmate gasped and convulsed violently during his execution in Ohio as the state used a two-drug method for the first time in the United States.
Missouri state Representative Rick Brattin (R-Of Course), said Friday the controversy over lethal injections forces families of murder victims to wait too long for justice so he introduced his bill Thursday to add "firing squad" as an execution option.
The United States has executed more than 1,300 prisoners since it resumed the death penalty in the 1970s, nearly 1,200 by lethal injection. Only Utah has used firing squads, executing three inmates that way since 1977, the last in 2010.

The soaring value of California's nut crops is attracting a new breed of thieves who have been making off with the pricey commodities by the truckload, recalling images of cattle rustlers of bygone days.
This harvest season in the Central Valley, thieves cut through a fence and hauled off $400,000 in walnuts. Another $100,000 in almonds was stolen by a driver with a fake license. And $100,000 in pistachios was taken by a big rig driver who left a farm without filling out any paperwork.
Investigators suspect low-level organized crime may have a hand in cases, while some pilfered nuts are ending up in Los Angeles for resale at farmers markets or disappear into the black market.
Domestic demand for specialty foods and an expanding Asian market for them have prompted a nut orchard boom in the state's agricultural heartland. Such heists have become so common that an industry taskforce recently formed to devise ways to thwart thieves.
As the nation's top nut producer, the state grows more almonds and pistachios than any other country. Only China produces more walnuts, which have nearly tripled in price in the last five years to about $2 a pound, according to the California Walnut Board.
Cultural traditions and a lack of legal protections are driving tens of millions of girls around the world into early marriage, subjecting them to violence, poverty and mistreatment, an international human rights group says.
Equality Now, citing the United Nations Population Fund, said in a report issued over the weekend that more than 140 million girls over the next decade will be married before they turn 18.
The 32-page report found that despite laws that set a minimum age for marriage in many countries, social norms continue to provide a veneer of legitimacy to child marriage in remote villages and even in developed countries. Child marriage is defined as a marriage before age 18.
"Child marriage legitimizes human rights violations and abuses of girls under the guise of culture, honor, tradition and religion," the report said.
Often when child brides are married off to older men, it is to restore or maintain family honor, or to settle a father's debts or obtain some other financial gain. A girl married off is seen as one less mouth to feed, and the wedding dowry is spent by her family to support itself.

At least one type of "sixth sense" isn't real, new research suggests.
The new study, detailed Monday (Jan. 13) in the journal PLOS ONE, found that what people perceive as a sixth sense may simply be their vision systems detecting changes they can't articulate.
"People can sense things that they believe they cannot see," such as changes in a person's appearance, said study co-author Piers Howe, a vision scientist at the University of Melbourne in Australia. "But this isn't anything magical or a sixth sense; this can be explained in terms of known visual processing."
Most Americans believe in the supernatural. In fact, one survey found that almost one-third of people believe in extrasensory perception and more than two-thirds reported a paranormal experience.
"Ride Along" arrived in first place at the weekend box office.
The Universal buddy cop comedy featuring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube debuted with $41.2 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. The strong opening for "Ride Along" marks the biggest debut for a film released during Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend and puts it on track to top the $40.1 million record set by the 2008 monster movie "Cloverfield" for the biggest opening of January.
In second place, Universal's Navy SEAL drama "Lone Survivor" starring Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch and Ben Foster earned $23.2 million in its second weekend in wide release, bringing its domestic total to $74 million.
Open Road Films' animated film "The Nut Job" featuring the voices of Will Arnett and Brendan Fraser opened in third place with $20.6 million.
The weekend's other major new releases, Paramount's spy series reboot "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit" and the Fox horror flick "Devil's Due," respectively opened in fourth and seventh place.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Tuesday.
1. "Ride Along," $41.2 million.
2. "Lone Survivor," $23.2 million ($6 million international).
3. "The Nut Job," $20.6 million.
4. "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit," $17.2 million ($22.2 million international).
