Froma Harrop: About the People Who Serve Us (Creators Syndicate)
A New York voice boomed from the back of the long car rental line: "Wha'd they do, lay off half the people?" One of my thoughts no doubt shared by fellow detainees waiting, waiting at the big-name car rental office at a Florida airport. Behind the desk flashed a screen informing us of the company's very high ratings for customer service. I was not the only one smirking.
Henry Rollins: The Unrelenting Misery of the Holidays (LA Weekly)
As you consume your sugarfied coffee drink, you look over your text pal's shoulder to see a gray-haired man writing in a notebook at great speed with unnerving intensity. That's me, you dumb bastard! I've been there for hours. In fact, it's my second shift. I was at the Starbucks in Burbank because they open at 0430.

… I'm going to pursue a different theme in some of my columns this year. I call it Investing-Without-Money. …Tell me where to go to find people who are creating a good life with a little income, rather creating a good life by starting with a lot of income. If you're one of those people, send me a note. I'll call, maybe visit, tell your story and, just maybe, share some useful wisdom.
The Ross Sisters (YouTube)
The Ross Sisters were a trio of female sibling singing dancers consisting of Aggie Ross, Elmira Ross, and Maggie Ross, (whose real names were Veda Victoria, Dixie Jewel and Betsy Ann Ross). The Ross Sisters performed as a 3-part harmony trio, in which they also danced and did acrobatics and contortionism. Their public attention peaked during the 1940s, during which they were featured prominently in the film Broadway Rhythm.
Jonathan Harris (born Jonathan Charasuchin; November 6, 1914 - November 3, 2002) was an American character actor. Two of his best-known roles were as the timid accountant Bradford Webster in the TV version of The Third Man and the prissy villain Dr. Zachary Smith of the 1960s science fiction television series Lost in Space. Near the end of his career, he provided the voice of "Manny", a praying mantis in the animated feature A Bug's Life.

PS: I have a friend who lives in Puerto Rico. I was commenting to her that if I were there, we could go to the beach and swim. To this she replied, "¡Dios mío, no one swims now, it's TOO COLD!" I have known this woman for over 40 years, and she still doesn't know that I am a Nordic woman! She has that 'warm climate, thin blood" that all the southerners seem to acquire when living in the heat...
I like the beaches in PR, they have trees on the shore line! I must put another visit there on my bucket list!!
Lois In Space Of Oregon responded:
Ah, now you speak of matters dear. Jonathan Harris was a
delight! Who else could hold his own in a scene with a
talking carrot (sad footnote: the carrot was later in a car
accident and left a vegetable), and his reply to a question
about his accent; "Are you British"? "No no, my dear. Just
affected." I LOVE Doctor Smith AND Robot! Watching "Lost in
Space" as an impressionable young girl helped make me the
man I am today (a gay one trapped in a woman's body). Oh,
how I miss the Golden Age of Everything.

Ha! You thought, mebee, that I'd pick that dorkmeister "Dr. Smith" from "Lost in Space" ("Oh, the pain!"), eh? No way... Here ol' Jonathan depicts, of all people, Charles Dickens in a 5th season "Bonanza" episode... I catch "Bonanza" episodes, occasionally, in the late afternoon on the "TVLand" network. It's amazing the noted actors that were on that program as guests...

And, Joe S answered:
He first changed his occupation from pharmacist to wizard then magically changed his place of birth to Japan and his name to Jonathan Usuke in the mistaken belief it would help him to become a famous as an actor. That didn't work out at all, no one took him seriously because he neither looked nor sounded Japanese. He then reversed the magical spell and reverted to Jonathan Charasuchin and renounced his wizardly affiliation, but then everyone laughed at him so he changed his name to Jonathan Harris.
After that he got acting jobs but was not famous until he landed the role of Dr. Zachary Smith on a stupid TV series called Lost in Space. He did well in this role because he wasn't acting, he was actually playing himself. He really was a self-serving, insufferable ass. Because of his role as Dr. Smith he became a "Famous Minor TV Personality." Sadly he never progressed beyond that.

KUDOS to the HFPA for the obvious slap to the Duck-fucking racist-loving A&E ilk who continue to plumb the depths of ignorant sheep who give up their cracker food-stamp/welfare at Wal-crap just to foist their merch. I suggest that we all pool $ to send copies of "Twelve Years.." off to the Robertson inbreds and offer free screenings at their "churches".
Interesting that no person of color won this year; guess the NFPA, ( made up of almost entirely white, European voters) might be feeling threatened?

Canadian rock icon Neil Young launched a blistering attack on the Harper government and Alberta's oilsands at a news conference on Sunday, saying that he was "shattered" after visiting a Fort McMurray industrial site he compared to the atomic bomb-devastated wreckage of Hiroshima, Japan.
Joined on the Massey Hall stage by representatives from the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, Young was especially scathing in his criticism of Prime Minister Stephen Harper's "hypocritical" administration, which Young said was ignoring science to irresponsibly drive corporate profits.
"Canada is trading integrity for money," said the environmentally engaged 68-year-old rocker. "That's what's happening under the current leadership in Canada, which is a very poor imitation of the George Bush administration in the United States and is lagging behind on the world stage. It's an embarrassment to any Canadians."
The Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation represents a community living roughly 200 kilometres downstream of current oilsands development. The group is embroiled in a legal battle to protect their traditional territory from further industrialization.
Young, who was born in Toronto before launching his storied music career in Winnipeg, was ferocious in his condemnation of what he sees as a violation of treaty rights.

An all-star lineup of musicians feted Gregg Allman Friday night at a tribute concert heralding the southern rock luminary and the blues rock that influenced many artists to follow his band's early 1970s success.
Traditionally, Allman's biggest fans have been in the audience, dancing and swaying to his southern rock ensemble's well known songs like "Melissa" and "Midnight Rider." But on this night those effusing about Allman the most were on stage in Atlanta, performing for him and beside him - including Jackson Browne, Taj Mahal and Vince Gill.
Allman, who has come back strong from a liver transplant in recent years, said he feels years younger and fit enough to go on the road again.
The event signals a bit of a wind down for the Allman Brothers Band as two members, Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks, announced earlier this week they are leaving the band at the end of 2014. Haynes joined the group in 1989, and Trucks became a member in 1999. Trucks' uncle Butch Trucks was the drummer and one of the founding members of the Allman Brothers band.

Pamela Anderson is giving marriage another try - with ex-hubby Rick Salomon.
The "Baywatch" alum was looking pretty in pink and wearing a huge new diamond ring on the red carpet at Sean Penn's Help Haiti Gala in Los Angeles on Saturday night. The 46-year-old told E! News that she's once again off the market, having quietly tied the knot with the producer.
This is Anderson's second time down the aisle with Salomon. They first said "I do" in Las Vegas in 2007. At the time, she was working as a magician's assistant in a stage act at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. After the 7 p.m. show, she left to marry Salomon, 45, during her 90-minute break. She was then back in time for the 10 p.m. performance.
They split almost immediately and annulled the marriage in 2008.
A permit to hunt a black rhino in Namibia sold for $350,000 at an auction in Dallas on Saturday with proceeds going to protect the endangered animals despite protests from animal rights groups that saw the sale as immoral conservation.
The license allows for the killing of a single, post-breeding bull, with Namibian wildlife officials on hand for the hunt to make sure an appropriate animal is selected.
The Dallas Safari Club had been expecting the permit to bring $250,000 to $1 million at an auction held during its annual convention. The hunt will help in managing the population and provide an underfunded Namibian government hard cash in the expensive battle to thwart poachers, it said.
There are about 25,000 rhinos in Africa - 20,000 white rhinos and 5,000 black rhinos - with the majority in South Africa. Namibia is one of the leading habitats after that.

Gene Simmons wagged his trademark tongue as an all-glammed-up Kiss swept down the John Varvatos runway in an unannounced appearance during Milan Fashion Week.
The band that brought glam to rock decades ago gave a burst of energy to the Varvatos' rock-inspired menswear preview for next winter Saturday, bringing the normally restrained fashion crowd to its feet to "Rock and Roll All Nite."
Varvato's designs have that "rock persona," Simmons said, adding "if he wasn't designing clothes, he'd have a guitar around his neck."
Singer and guitarist Paul Stanley said the band met Varvatos during Milan Fashion Week last year when they were performing in the city. The band has since signed on to do an ad campaign for Varvatos.

There was no fist-pumping or wild celebrations by the polygamous family that stars in the TLC reality TV show "Sister Wives" when a federal judge in Utah struck down key parts of the state's polygamy laws.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Kody Brown and his four wives said they felt humbled and cried when they heard in mid-December the judge ruled in their favor in a lawsuit they brought against Utah in July 2011 after they fled the state for Las Vegas under the threat of prosecution.
Kody and his wives - Meri, Janelle, Christine and Robyn - said they hope the landmark ruling stands and enables other polygamous families in Utah to live open and free without fearing prosecution.
Jonathan Turley, the Browns' Washington, D.C.-based attorney, said he's been told Utah will appeal. He said he's eager to defend the ruling before the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
The ruling decriminalizes polygamy, but bigamy - holding marriage licenses with multiple partners - is still illegal. Utah's law was considered stricter than the laws in 49 other states because of the cohabitation clause. If the ruling stands, Utah's law would be identical to most other states that prohibit people from having multiple marriage licenses. In most polygamous families in Utah, the man is legally married to one woman but only "spiritually married" to the others.

Legend has it that the long arm of Texas law once extended to hotel balconies where the men with star badges would take into custody anyone who violated a state statute forbidding people to hunt buffalo from such a perch.
The legend ends at the Legislative Reference Library of Texas, where a small team of well-referenced librarians has gone through the records and sorted out fact from fiction when it comes to the laws of the Lone Star State.
There was never any state law forbidding buffalo hunting from the second floor of a hotel. But a person who fired a weapon in those circumstances would probably face other violations of criminal law.
The library has received a steady stream of requests from the public and lawmakers to see if a certain statute is still on the books or whether it existed at all. It recently sorted through claims for an exhibit at its home in the state capitol building.

"Frozen" also topped the international box office with $27.8 million from 50 international markets.
