Paul Krugman: Monetary Rage (New York Times)
Every once in a while I either publish an op-ed or make a blog post that induces incoherent rage in a certain number of readers. What do I mean by "incoherent"? That the people leaving hostile comments (or, in some cases, phone messages and emails) seem unable even to say what exactly it is that they disagree with.
The Massive Murals of Przemek Blejzyk

The Incredible Story of What Happened When Two Gay Men Were Harassed While Waiting for Pizza (Huffington Post)
I didn't expect to see allies so willing to chime in and let this guy know that his hate speech wouldn't be tolerated. The best part though was as he grew more irate and vocal the guys who work the truck stopped what they were doing and leaned towards the window and told him they would not serve him because he was spewing hate. They said they support everyone in our community and that he should get out of line because they would not be serving him.
The number of pages in the average comic book (not including the cover)
Source
Charlie was first, and correct, with:
32 pages, methinks. Of course, not all comic books are average.
Alan J responded:
22 to 24
Jim from CA, retired to ID, replied:
The standard monthly regular comic from most companies is 22-23 pages of
material, not including ads.
Sally took the day off.
To be honest, I don't really know the number of pages there are in a comic book, and don't have much time to do the necessary research here.
Our Bar Mitzvah is over, and everything went very well - thank you very much. :)
Today is the party - but for me, it was all about the service.
The reason I am replying here is because the question de jour is quite apropo for me today.
Yesterday, in the synagogue, the young friends of the Bar Mitzvah boy have a special section in which to sit, on the side of the bema (altar). It is a lengthy service, in Hebrew, but prayer books (translations) are provided for all - rather large books I thought to myself. I was impressed at the way the kids were holding up their books and apparently following along, and occasionally responding to the prayers...
At one point, I went out to power my nose, and coming back, the Rabbi was chanting, so I slipped in the pew in back of the kids. You guessed it - all had comic books inside of the prayer books.
OTOH, what can you expect from 12 -13 -14 year old BOYS? The little girls, dressed to the 9's, sat there demurely and looked angelic, while the boys, "Prayed..."
I'm betting the Rabbi knows too, but figures it keeps the kids quiet...
I shall be back in force tomorrow, hopefully, LOL!
Adam answered:
Um, 20. 20.
Marian responded:
32

I'm sorry, but any mention of the words 'Comic Books' immediately redirects my brain synapses to...

32 ~ The term "comic book" arose because the first comic books reprinted humor comic strips. The introduction of the comic book format was in 1933 with the publication of 'Famous Funnies'. The introduction of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's Superman in 1938 turned comic books into a major industry.
And, Joe S took the day off.
Well, I'll tell ya. I don't know for sure because I don't read comic books any more. What I've seen on Google is an average of 22 to 24 pages, which is a lot less than the 52 page comic for only a dime when I was a kid.

On his upcoming NBC comedy, Michael J. Fox will play a newscaster who had quit his job due to Parkinson's Disease but returns to work in the show's first episode because a new medical regimen has helped him control many of the disease's symptoms.
It mirrors the life of the former "Family Ties" and "Spin City" star, who said last year that drugs have helped minimize the physical tics of Parkinson's and have enabled him to take on more acting jobs.
The yet-to-be-named sitcom is a key piece of NBC's strategy to build upon a revival that has brought the network back from many years in the ratings wilderness. Show like "The Voice" and "Revolution" have made NBC the only one of the four biggest networks to gain in viewership over last season.
Though it's not definite, NBC is penciling Fox's comedy in for September on its low-rated Thursday schedule. The long-running Thursday comedy "30 Rock" ends its run on Jan. 31, and "The Office" will exit after a special one-hour episode this spring.

Unpublished early color photographs of The Beatles' first U.S. tour will be sold at a U.K. auction.
The photos were taken during the rock band's 1964 visit to the U.S., when color film was expensive and most images of the group were in black and white.
The collection of 65 slides contains many stage shots, including George Harrison with his legendary red Rickenbacker guitar and close-up portraits from a Las Vegas Sahara Hotel press conference and Las Vegas Convention Centre gig.
The images were taken by Dr. Robert Beck, who died in 2002 and left them in an archive of photographs and slides in his Hollywood home.
Omega Auctions said Sunday the images will be sold March 22 - exactly 50 years after The Beatles released their first album.
After tracking him for a year, California wildlife officials say that the lone gray wolf who migrated from Oregon likes to travel more than most.
Since he took off from his pack in northeast Oregon the wolf has traveled more than 3,000 miles.
Scientists call him OR-7 because he was the seventh wolf in Oregon to be outfitted with a GPS tracking collar. It's why wildlife officials have been able to keep up with him as he follows migrating deer around the northeastern corner of the California.
Scientists say he might be looking for a new pack or a mate. Karen Kovacs, a state wildlife program manager, says the chances of him finding either are slim.
Most gray wolves stay within 100 miles of where they were born.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management has announced new rules restricting the private sale of wild horses and burros.
The rules announced Friday are in response to an investigation of a Colorado livestock hauler who has bought more than 1,700 horses since 2009. The Department of Interior's inspector general is investigating whether any of the horses sold to Tom Davis were taken to slaughter.
Wild horses are protected under federal law, and selling them for slaughter is illegal.
Sales of wild mustangs and burros will be limited to no more than four within a six-month period unless prior approval is obtained from a BLM assistant director. Buyers also must describe where they intend to keep the animals.
The day after receiving his new Russian passport from President Vladimir Putin, French actor Gerard Depardieu flew Sunday to the provincial town of Saransk, where he was greeted as a local hero and offered an apartment for free.
Depardieu had sought Russian citizenship as part of his battle against a proposed super tax on millionaires in France.
Putin granted his request last week and then welcomed the actor late Saturday to his residence in Sochi, the host city of the 2014 Winter Olympics. Russian television showed the two men embracing and then chatting over supper, discussing a soon-to-be-released film in which Depardieu plays Russian monk Grigory Rasputin.
Depardieu flew Sunday to Saransk, a town about 500 kilometres (300 miles) east of Moscow, where he was met at a snow-covered airport by the governor and a group of women in traditional costume singing folk songs. He flashed his new passport to the crowd before setting out on a tour of the town.

The 19-year-old son of Sen. Rand Paul (R-Family Values) and grandson of former presidential candidate Ron Paul (R-Inhales) was arrested Saturday morning for allegedly being intoxicated at Charlotte/Douglas International Airport.
William Hilton Paul arrived in Charlotte, N.C., on a U.S. Airways flight from Lexington, Ky., where his father is a U.S. senator.
According to Lt. Blake Hollar with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, Paul was intoxicated when he arrived at the airport and said "he was possibly served alcohol on the flight."
The teenager was arrested by police and booked into the Mecklenburg County Jail, charged with three misdemeanors: underage consumption, disorderly conduct, and being intoxicated and disruptive.
While in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office, reports say William Hilton Paul identified himself as the son of Sen. Rand Paul.

Actor Josh Brolin spent some of New Year's Day and the following morning in a Southern California jail cell after getting arrested for misdemeanour public intoxication.
Santa Monica Police Lt. Darrell Lowe says the actor was not given a citation for the Tuesday arrest, which means he likely won't have to appear in court.
Lowe says Brolin was arrested just before midnight January 1, when officers found him heavily intoxicated on a Santa Monica sidewalk. He was booked into jail and released about six hours later after he had sobered up.
Brolin is starring in the crime film "Gangster Squad," which opens this week.

Pope Benedict said on Sunday that Roman Catholic leaders must have the courage to stand up to attacks by "intolerant agnosticism" prevalent in many countries.
The pope and the Church have come under increased attack because of their opposition to homosexual marriage and women priests. The pope has repeatedly denounced what he says are attempts to push religion out of public debate.
The 85-year-old pontiff celebrated Mass on the day Christians in the West mark the Epiphany, and ordained four new archbishops including his personal secretary.
The best known of the four new archbishops is the pontiff's chief private secretary Monsignor Georg Ganswein, who has been the closest person to Benedict since his election in 2005 as leader of the world's 1.2 billion Roman Catholics.
The other new archbishops are Angelo Vincenzo Zani, an Italian in the Vatican's department for Catholic education, Fortunatus Nwachukwu, a Nigerian who becomes the Vatican's ambassador to Nicaragua, and Nicolas Thevenin, a Frenchman who becomes ambassador to Guatemala.

The nation just suffered its worst year for whooping cough in nearly six decades, according to preliminary government figures.
Whooping cough ebbs and flows in multi-year cycles, and experts say 2012 appears to have reached a peak with 41,880 cases. Another factor: A vaccine used since the 90s doesn't last as long as the old one.
The vaccine problem may continue to cause higher than normal case counts in the future, said Dr. Tom Clark of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Last year, cases were up in 48 states and outbreaks were particularly bad in Colorado, Minnesota, Washington state, Wisconsin and Vermont.
The good news: Despite the high number of illnesses, deaths didn't increase. Eighteen people died, including 15 infants younger than 1.

Lionsgate's horror sequel "Texas Chainsaw 3-D" debuted at No. 1 with $23 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. The movie picks up where 1974's "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" left off, with masked killer Leatherface on the loose again.
Quentin Tarantino's revenge saga "Django Unchained" held on at No. 2 for a second-straight weekend with $20.1 million. The Weinstein Co. release raised its domestic total to $106.4 million.
