How many actors or actresses have won an acting Oscar in a film directed by Alfred Hitchcock?
One (Joan Fontaine, Best Actress, Suspicion)
Source
Joan de Beauvoir de Havilland (22 October 1917 ? 15 December 2013), known professionally as Joan Fontaine, was a British-American actress. Fontaine began her career on the stage in 1935 and signed a contract with RKO Pictures that same year.
In 1941, she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her role in Rebecca, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The following year, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for Hitchcock's Suspicion (1941), making Fontaine the only actor to ever win an Academy Award in a film directed by Hitchcock.

Joan Fontaine won Best Actress for Suspicion (1941).
Adam answered:
That sounds like kind of a trick question- I'm going to say zero.
Marian replied:
1 - Joan Fontaine

I believe that only one person won an Oscar, for acting in a motion picture directed by Alfred Hitchcock, and that was Joan Fontaine for the movie, "Suspicion" circa 1941. I could be wrong...
Here's Joan, wearing a popular hat of that day...
PS: Don't know about anyone else, but after food shopping today, I have retired to my chair where I intend to lodge indefinitely...or so.
Jim from CA, retired to ID, responded:
Zero
Dale of Dry Diamond Springs, Norcali answered:
Just Joan Fontaine. Wow, what an unreal bunch of oversights and stiff jobs, for a truly great filmmaker and his actors and actresses. Looking at all the lists of nominations, it's hard to believe that the academy ignored so many grand performances. But, how many Hitchcock have passed the test of time and are more loved than most of the movies Hollywood has created? Not many!!!
Lois The Elder Of Oregon said:
Unbelievable! Joan Fontaine was the ONLY actor in a
Hitchcock film to win an oscar!?! Well, there WAS a lot more
talented competition back in them days. Of course, they
probably felt the same back in the days of Edwin Booth, too.
I tried but couldn't find a picture of my favorite
introduction to an episode of "Alfred Hitchcock Presents",
where Alfred was standing next to a Saint Bernard doggie,
complete with rescue cask of brandy on his collar, and said
"Here I am with man's best friend. Oh, and a dog".

Two thirds of Americans say the current Congress is the worst ever, while three quarters slammed the "do-nothing" legislature, a CNN/ORC International poll found Thursday.
The negative attitudes were expressed toward leading lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, with 52 percent saying the policies of Democrats would move the country in the wrong direction, compared to 54 percent for Republican policies.
And with a continued political stalemate likely in 2014, when mid-term elections will take place, the current Congress is poised to become one of the least productive in at least the past four decades, CNN noted.
The negative outlook toward Congress "exists among all demographic and political subgroups. Men, women, rich, poor, young, old -- all think this year's Congress has been the worst they can remember," CNN polling director Keating Holland said.
"Older Americans -- who have lived through more congresses -- hold more negative views of the 113th Congress than younger Americans. Republicans, Democrats and independents also agree that this has been the worst session of Congress in their lifetimes."

McDonald's Corp. has shut down a website intended to provide employees with work and life guidance after it generated negative publicity for the fast-food company.
The McResource program has been criticized for creating unrealistic budgets and offering advice that was out of touch with its workers' pay. The website, which was run by an outside company, also reportedly discouraged workers from eating fast food.
Earlier this year, media and labour groups criticized the website for content including sample budgets for employees that were based on holding two jobs and included no costs for heating, as well as suggestions on what to tip a personal fitness trainer or au pair.
And in an embarrassing moment for McDonald's, the world's largest hamburger chain, CNBC reported last week that the McResource website discouraged eating fast food as part of its tips for healthy living.
Ed Currie holds one of his world-record Carolina Reaper peppers by the stem, which looks like the tail of a scorpion.
On the other end is the bumpy, oily, fire-engine red fruit with a punch of heat nearly as potent as most pepper sprays used by police. It's hot enough to leave even the most seasoned spicy food aficionado crimson-faced, flushed with sweat, trying not to lose his lunch.
Last month, The Guinness Book of World Records decided Currie's peppers were the hottest on Earth, ending a more than four-year drive to prove no one grows a more scorching chili. The heat of Currie's peppers was certified by students at Winthrop University who test food as part of their undergraduate classes.
The heat of a pepper is measured in Scoville Heat Units. Zero is bland, and a regular jalapeno pepper registers around 5,000 on the Scoville scale. Currie's world record batch of Carolina Reapers comes in at 1,569,300 Scoville Heat Units, with an individual pepper measured at 2.2 million. Pepper spray weighs in at about 2 million Scoville Units.

A smouldering islet created by undersea volcanic eruptions off Japan's Pacific coast has melded to a nearby island, the Japanese coastguard said Thursday.
Officials overflying the new landmass said it had merged at two points with Nishino-shima, an uninhabited volcanic island in the Ogasawara (Bonin) chain, some 1,000 kilometres (620 miles) south of Tokyo.
Two craters on the islet have been erupting "at an interval of 30 seconds to one minute," spewing brown smoke about 100 metres (330 feet) high, a coastguard statement said.
The islet was first spotted on November 20, some 200 metres from Nishino-shima, which is estimated to be 10 million years old.
It is now sized about 450 metres from east to west and 500 metres from north to south, with ground space measuring about 0.15 square kilometres (0.06 square miles), the statement said.
A Roman Catholic church official who has been jailed for more than a year for his handling of priest sex-abuse complaints had his landmark conviction reversed and was ordered released Thursday.
A three-judge Superior Court panel unanimously rejected prosecution arguments that Monsignor William Lynn, the first U.S. church official ever charged or convicted for the handling of clergy-abuse complaints, was legally responsible for an abused boy's welfare in the late 1990s.
Lynn, 62, is serving a three- to six-year prison sentence after his child-endangerment conviction last year. His lawyers hoped for his immediate release Thursday from the state prison in Waymart, but the appeals court denied the request, instead sending the bail issue back to the trial court.
Prosecutors vowed to oppose bail and to challenge the 43-page opinion.
His office contended at trial that Lynn reassigned known predators to new parishes in Philadelphia while he was the archdiocese's secretary for clergy from 1992 to 2004. Lynn's conviction stems from the case of one priest, Edward Avery, found to have abused a child in 1998 after such a transfer.

A former Tiffany & Co executive was sentenced to a year in prison on Monday after admitting to stealing more than $2.1 million of jewelry from the New York luxury store.
Ingrid Lederhaas-Okun, a former vice president of product development, broke down in tears as she told a federal judge in Manhattan her regret for engaging in a years-long theft of merchandise from her longtime employer.
Lederhaas-Okun, who lives in Darien, Connecticut, pleaded guilty on July 26 to one count of transporting stolen property in interstate commerce, less than a month after being arrested.
By her own lawyer's account, Lederhaas-Okun engaged in the first of many thefts in 2005, taking a pendant from Tiffany, where she worked since 1991.
In the years that followed, Lederhaas-Okun would steal jewelry and sell it, pocketing the money for herself, prosecutors say. The government says the jewelry included bracelets, earrings and pendants made of diamonds, platinum and gold.
A woman has been arrested after police saw her defacing a well-known Austin mural painted by Texas singer-songwriter Daniel Johnston.
According to an arrest affidavit, 32-year-old Rebecca Guest was arrested Christmas Eve and charged with a Class A misdemeanour for the act of graffiti. An obscene word was spray-painted several times on the mural, which depicts a frog-like creature saying "Hi, How Are You."
Guest told police that she believed the mural was offensive and meant to personally insult her.
Johnston painted the mural in 1993 on the exterior wall of what was then a record store. The image was printed on a T-shirt, which Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain once wore.

Evidence of Earth's first continents - 4.3-billion-year-old "diamonds" - are actually just fragments of polishing grit, a new study finds.
In 2007, an international team first reported discovering the tiny gems, which hid in pockets inside zircon crystals from Western Australia's Jack Hills , in the journal Nature. But it turns out that the gems weren't actually diamonds, but polishing paste, smushed into hairs'-width cracks when the zircons were prepared for laboratory tests, according to a study published online in the Feb. 1, 2014, edition of the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters.
Scientists at the University of California, Riverside (UCR) found the mistake by snapping pictures of the disputed diamonds with a powerful transmission electron microscope, along with other techniques. Instead of bumpy real diamonds, they discovered sharp-corned synthetic diamonds embedded in polishing compound.
"There can be no doubt of the images we show," said Harry Green, a UCR research geophysicist and study co-author. "Polishing the specimens with grinding compound that was made of diamonds was a terrible mistake."
The original authors, who provided their samples for analysis by Green and lead study author Larissa Dobrzhinetskaya, also agree with the conclusions.
