Paul Krugman: The Banality of Trumpism (NY Times Blog)
… there's nothing too surprising about an election in which the establishment candidates continue to serve plutocracy while the base turns to candidates who drop the euphemisms while going straight to the racism and xenophobia.

So, huge tax cuts that would massively increase debt, with the benefits going to the very highest-income Americans. And this is the "responsible", moderate candidate.

From now until the end of time, you can cling to this study as sufficient proof that every unfortunate work or social incident that befalls you is actually evidence of your handsomeness. Sure, you'll be kidding yourself, but most people get away with a bit of self-delusion. Just ask those UCL researchers who think they've contributed to the greater sum of human understanding with this piece of work.

Lippy the Lion & Hardy Har Har are a pair of anthropomorphic Hanna-Barbera cartoon characters, a lion in a tattered top hat and vest and a hyena in a porkpie hat and bow tie, respectively. The latter's name is ironic, as it suggests laughter (see onomatopoeia) and Hardy is an eternal pessimist.
Lippy the Lion (voiced by Daws Butler) and Hardy Har Har the Hyena (voiced by Mel Blanc) first appeared in The Hanna-Barbera New Cartoon Series in 1962, along with Wally Gator and Touché Turtle and Dum Dum. Mel Blanc used the same voice, personality and expressions for Hardy Har-Har that he used playing the postman on the Burns and Allen radio show.
Their cartoons revolved around ever-hopeful Lippy's attempts to get rich quick, with reluctant Hardy serving as a foil. Whatever the consequences were to Lippy's schemes, Hardy would end up getting the worst of it - a fact he always seemed to realize ahead of time, with his moans of, "Oh me, oh my, oh dear." Although the intro shows them in a jungle setting proper for such beasts, most of the cartoons' stories took place in an urban setting.

Yes?

So his name, the side kick, is Hardy Har Har. Learn something new every day. Today I also learned that turtles are a chocolate, caramel and pecan candy. Who knew?

Actor Kirk Douglas and his wife have donated $15 million toward a Motion Picture Television Fund campus in Woodland Hills, California, to help build a care center for Hollywood industry members suffering from Alzheimer's disease.
The Los Angeles Daily News reports that the center will be named after Douglas and is expected to cost $35 million in total.
Officials announced Wednesday - Douglas's 99th birthday - that his gift will kick the design and planning of the new facility into high gear.
Douglas was born Issur Danielovitch in 1916 in Amsterdam, New York. He changed his name to Kirk Douglas as he started his acting career.
Scientists in Germany said Thursday they had reached a milestone in a quest to derive energy from nuclear fusion, billed as a potentially limitless, safe and cheap source.
Nuclear fusion entails fusing atoms together to generate energy -- a process similar to that in the Sun -- as opposed to nuclear fission, where atoms are split, which entails worries over safety and long-term waste.
After spending a billion euros ($1.1 billion) and nine years' construction work, physicists working on a German project called the "stellarator" said they had briefly generated a super-heated helium plasma inside a vessel -- a key point in the experimental process.
"We're very satisfied," said Hans-Stephan Bosch at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Greifswald.

ABC Family is getting a new name. The network announced Thursday it will soon be known as Freeform.
The rechristening happens Jan. 12, the same day the network welcomes back "Pretty Little Liars" for its season premiere, along with the series debut of "Shadowhunters."
The network says the name Freeform speaks to its ongoing mission to serve the span of viewers who are in high school, college and the decade that follows.
U2 guitarist The Edge won approval on Thursday to build five hilltop homes in the California celebrity enclave of Malibu despite opposition from environmentalists who fear it will endanger crucial wildlife corridors for such animals as mountain lions and bobcats, officials said.
The Edge, whose real name is David Evans, and his team bought the property in 2005 and since then he has pursued regulatory approval from the California Coastal Commission to be able to eventually build on the site and live there.
The unanimous vote by the Coastal Commission at a meeting in Monterey, in central California, to approve the 5.2-acre (2.1-hectare) project in the exclusive beach community just outside Los Angeles marked a reversal from its 2011 decision to reject the project.
The project must next go before officials in Malibu and Los Angeles County to obtain permits.

Former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman was placed in solitary in the federal prison where he's serving time on corruption charges after calling a talk show and repeating his claims of innocence, his son said Thursday.
Siegelman phoned a liberal talk show on Oct. 15 to discuss his allegations that he's a Democratic political prisoner wrongly prosecuted by Republicans. A recording of the segment is available online.
He also talked about U.S. District Judge Mark Fuller, who presided at Siegelman's trial but has since resigned after being arrested on a spousal abuse charge, and told listeners inmates are limited to 15 minutes on the phone.
Joseph Siegelman, Siegelman's son and attorney, said the former governor was sent to a higher-security facility and placed solitary confinement afterward, and he's apparently been there ever since. Prison regulations don't bar inmates from speaking with the media, he said.
"All I know is it's been eight weeks and he's still locked in a box," said the younger Siegelman, who practices in Birmingham.

The Citadel military college in South Carolina said on Thursday it was suspending eight cadets after photographs were posted on social media showing many of them wearing pointed white pillowcases that resembled hoods worn by the white supremacist Ku Klux Klan.
Seven cadets wore the hoods and all-white clothing while singing Christmas carols as part of a "Ghosts of Christmas Past" skit, according to initial findings by the college in Charleston.
The costumes resemble the white hoods and garb worn by members of the KKK, a group that has targeted blacks with cross burnings, lynchings and other violent acts.
"These images are not consistent with our core values of honor, duty and respect," said college president John Rosa, a retired Air Force lieutenant general.

Islanders in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay could be among the first "climate change refugees" in the continental United States as rising seas claim their historic fishing village, a report released Thursday concludes.
The research published in the journal Scientific Reports says residents of steadily shrinking Tangier Island will have to abandon their fishing community in approximately 50 years.
As the U.N. climate talks continue an ocean away in Paris, "Tangier is kind of ground zero," said oceanographer David M. Schulte, lead author of the research.
The peer-reviewed research was funded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which has said millions in new infrastructure such as breakwaters could shield Tangier Island and extend its life.
Tangier's threatened existence is not news to islanders, who have seen their island and others nearby retreat through the decades. Uppards Island was abandoned nearly a century ago, but the skeletal remains of those who once lived there are occasionally coughed up during storms, such as Hurricane Sandy.

A trove of Viking jewelry and Saxon coins unearthed by an amateur treasure-hunter in a farmer's field may help rescue an English king from obscurity.
The Watlington Hoard, a collection of silver bands, ingots and 186 coins unveiled at the British Museum Thursday, dates from a tumultuous period. The coins were minted during the reign of Alfred the Great, ruler of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex, who battled a "great heathen army" of Viking invaders during the 9th century.
Alfred is renowned as the ruler whose victories helped create a unified England, but some of the coins in the hoard also bear the name of the far more obscure King Ceolwulf II of Mercia, a neighboring kingdom to Wessex.
"Poor Ceolwulf gets a very bad press in Anglo Saxon history," said museum coins curator Gareth Williams. What little is known of him was written at Alfred's court and paints Ceolwulf as "a puppet of the Vikings."
Williams said the hoard contains coins that carry images of two Roman emperors side by side - evidence that the kings were allies against the Scandinavians, but that Ceolwulf was "airbrushed out of history" by the increasingly powerful Alfred.
