I know I said that I'd make a post about sexism in video games and comic books, but in light of recent events, I thought I'd talk about something much more serious. This post may potentially be triggering so I apologize in advance if it makes anyone uncomfortable.

Remember when your English or history teacher back in high school figured out which side of an issue you leaned toward and then, out of sheer spite and/or teaching acumen, had you take the opposite side in the debate? You'd end up scratching together a few gray-area points and then arguing the heck out of them.

"Her college Spanish class required a special project, and most of the students translated songs. Redditor TechSis partnered with a classmate and recruited her husband and some friends to produce a video that parodies telenovelas, or Spanish language soap operas. The melodrama, the cliched plot lines, and the obvious product placements are exagerated just a bit as to be hilarious. The Spanish is not perfect, but the video was so funny that they got an A for the project!" - Neatorama)
The Picard Maneuver: A Compilation (YouTube)
"Patrick Stewart now wore a short-waisted Eisenhower jacket. It often rode up, so Stewart developed a habit of tugging it down. Fans referred to this tendency as the "Picard Maneuver"-a reference to a battle tactic devised by Jean-Luc Picard. In this video, you can see a compilation of Captain Picard engaging in this fashion maneuver. Other characters wore similar jackets, so you'll also see Will Riker, Data and Worf trying it out." - Neatorama)
"Smoke on the Water" by the British rock band Deep Purple tells the story of a fire at the Montreux Casino. What musical group was playing the casino that night?
"Smoke on the Water" is a song by the British rock band Deep Purple. It was first released on their 1972 album Machine Head.
The lyrics of the song tell a true story: on 4 December 1971 Deep Purple had set up camp in Montreux, Switzerland to record an album using a mobile recording studio (rented from the Rolling Stones and known as the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio-referred to as the "Rolling truck Stones thing" and "the mobile" in the song lyrics) at the entertainment complex that was part of the Montreux Casino (referred to as "the gambling house" in the song lyric). On the eve of the recording session a Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention concert was held in the casino's theatre. In the middle of Don Preston's synthesizer solo on "King Kong", the place suddenly caught fire when somebody in the audience fired a flare gun into the rattan covered ceiling, as mentioned in the "some stupid with a flare gun" line. The resulting fire destroyed the entire casino complex, along with all the Mothers' equipment. The "smoke on the water" that became the title of the song (credited to bass guitarist Roger Glover, who related how the title occurred to him when he suddenly woke from a dream a few days later) referred to the smoke from the fire spreading over Lake Geneva from the burning casino as the members of Deep Purple watched the fire from their hotel. The "Funky Claude" running in and out is referring to Claude Nobs , the director of the Montreux Jazz Festival who helped some of the audience escape the fire.

We lived in Trieste, Italy in November of 1971, and I remember seeing this on our B&W TV around Xmas that year. It was a big deal in Europe, don't know about in the States... That was not a good year for me, and I have no love for Zappa.
PS: It's a foggy day in Jersey Town. The temps are warm (in the 60's) but the fog's so thick, you could cut it with a knife! OTOH, my friend in CO awoke to -15° temp today! In all the 33 years I lived there, I never remember weather like that! We had cold fronts coming down from Canada (usually in January) but temps in the single digits was the coldest I ever recorded there... Guess it was time to move here, but I do miss Denver at times.

Someone was willing to pay big bucks for an early glimpse of what would become the Boss' "runaway American dream."
A handwritten, working lyric sheet for Bruce Springsteen's 1975 hit "Born to Run" sold at Sotheby's Thursday for $197,000, well exceeding pre-sale estimates of between $70,000 and $100,000.
The auction house didn't reveal the identity of either the seller or the telephone bidder who bought the document, which used to be in the collection of Springsteen's former manager, Mike Appel.
Most of the lines in this rough 1974 version, written in Long Branch, N.J., are apparently unpublished and unrecorded, but the manuscript does include "a nearly perfected chorus," the auction house said. It's one of only two identified manuscripts that include the rock anthem's most famous lines, according to Sotheby's.

Look alive, selfie. There's another word of the year that's not all about you.
While Oxford University Press, the British publisher of the Oxford dictionaries, declared those little smartphone self-portraits its winner last month, the folks at Merriam-Webster announced "science" on Tuesday.
Oxford tracked a huge jump in overall usage of selfie, but Merriam-Webster stuck primarily to look-ups on its website, recording a 176 per cent increase for science when compared with last year.
"The more we thought about it, the righter it seemed in that it does lurk behind a lot of big stories that we as a society are grappling with, whether it's climate change or environmental regulation or what's in our textbooks," said John Morse, president and publisher of Merriam-Webster Inc., based in Springfield, Mass.
Science, he said, is connected to broad cultural oppositions - science versus faith, for instance - along with the power of observation and intuition, reason and ideology, evidence and tradition. Of particular note, to Merriam-Webster, anyway, is fallout from the October release of Malcolm Gladwell's latest book, "David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants."

Facebook Inc has replaced its "Hide All" button with the more succinct "Unfollow," letting users block all messages and posts from selected friends.
As with the previous button, it gives users the option of blocking content from certain people without offending them, say through de-friending. The latter alternative severs ties with that person on the social network, without notifying them.
"This means you are still friends, but updates from that person won't appear in your News Feed. The goal of this change is to help people curate their newsfeed and see more of the content that they care about," Facebook said in an email.
Facebook began rolling out the "Unfollow" button and a related change to its users on Monday. It added a "Following" button next to the usual "Like" button on a page or next to the "Friends" button on a personal timeline, which will also enable users to block posts.
One of Farrah Fawcett's caregivers will be allowed to testify that the late actress told her an Andy Warhol portrait hanging in her home was owned by Ryan O'Neal.
The artwork's ownership is at the centre of dispute between the Oscar-nominated actor and Fawcett's alma mater, the University of Texas at Austin.
Superior Court Judge William MacLaughlin ruled that Maribel Avila should be allowed to testify in the case despite the fact she stepped forward as a possible witness just last month. Avila was a nurse's assistant who worked for Fawcett in 2006 and 2007 while the actress was battling cancer.
Avila recounted to MacLaughlin that Fawcett told her a Warhol portrait that hung outside her bedroom door belonged to O'Neal, who was her longtime partner. Avila said she hadn't heard about the lawsuit over the artwork until reading about it in the New York Post last month.
She contacted O'Neal's lawyers, who want to use her as a witness in their case. She is expected to testify before jurors next week.

Hard-to-predict sudden changes to Earth's environment are more worrisome than climate change's bigger but more gradual impacts, a panel of scientists advising the federal government concluded Tuesday.
The 200-page report by the National Academy of Sciences looked at warming problems that can occur in years instead of centuries. The report repeatedly warns of potential "tipping points" where the climate passes thresholds, beyond which "major and rapid changes occur." And some of these quick changes are happening now, said study chairman James White of the University of Colorado.
The report says abrupt changes like melting ice in the Arctic Ocean and mass species extinctions have already started and are worse than predicted. It says thousands of species are changing their ranges, seasonal patterns or in some cases are going extinct because of human-caused climate change. Species in danger include some coral; pika, a rabbitlike creature; the Hawaiian silversword plant and polar bears.
At the bottom of the world in Antarctica, the melting ice in the west could be more of a wild card than originally thought. If the massive ice sheet melts it may happen relatively rapidly and could raise world sea levels by 13 feet, but researchers aren't certain how soon that may occur.
The scientists said the issue of sudden changes is full of uncertainties, so the world can better prepare by monitoring places like Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets more. But because of budget cuts and aging satellites, researchers have fewer measurements of these crucial indicators than they did a few years ago and will have even fewer in upcoming years, study co-author Steven Wofsy of Harvard University said.
Thomas Williams, the onetime public face of the disgraced Legion of Christ religious order who left the priesthood after admitting he fathered a child, is getting married this weekend to the child's mother, The Associated Press has learned. The bride is the daughter of former U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See Mary Ann Glendon, one of Pope Francis' top advisers.
Glendon, a Harvard University law professor, is one of the highest-ranking women at the Vatican as president of the Pontifical Academy for Social Sciences. She is also one of five people on Francis' commission to reform the scandal-marred Vatican bank. Her daughter, Elizabeth Lev, is a Rome-based art historian and columnist for the Legion-run Zenit news agency, which Williams published for over a decade while he was in the order.
Williams, a moral theologian, author, lecturer and U.S. television personality, admitted last year that he had fathered a child several years earlier.
At the time, Williams apologized for "this grave transgression" against his vows of celibacy and said he had stayed on as a priest because he hoped to move beyond "this sin in my past" to do good work for the church. The Legion's retired superior later admitted he had learned about the child in 2005 but allowed Williams to keep teaching and preaching about morality.
After taking a year off for reflection, Williams left the priesthood in May to care for his son. According to their wedding registry, he and Lev are due to marry on Saturday in the United States.

A witness at the trial of a priest facing dozens of sexual abuse charges involving Inuit children testified Monday that the girls in her community were forced to devise a foul way to stop him.
The woman, who can't be named under a court order, told a pin-drop silent courtroom that the only thing the girls could think of to fend off Eric Dejaeger was to empty their bowels while he attacked them.
One woman told court how, when she was a little girl, Dejaeger taped her feet and right hand to the bed frame in his room and sodomized her. Court heard the priest forced a group of children to watch him having sex with his large dog.
Another man said he was a young boy when Dejaeger forced him to perform oral sex - then struck him for doing it.
The trial in Iqaluit, Nunavut, started with Dejaeger pleading guilty to eight counts of indecent assault. Testimony began on the remaining 69 charges he faces, including sexual abuse, indecent assault, making threats and confinement.

Australian psychedelic artist Martin Sharp, a founder of the controversial Oz magazine who designed posters for the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan, has died aged 71.
His death on Sunday, after a long struggle against emphysema, was confirmed by artist and friend Garry Shead, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.
"We've lost a major figure and a great character," said Wayne Tunnicliffe, head of Australian art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
Sharp studied at the National Art School in East Sydney before founding the famed Oz magazine in the early 1960s with Richard Neville and Richard Walsh.
The three were twice charged with printing an obscene publication, with a cover showing Neville and two friends seemingly urinating on a sculpture provoking fierce controversy in 1964.
Once his convictions were overturned on appeal in 1966, Sharp moved to London where he and Neville established London Oz along similar lines.
But Sharp is best known for the psychedelic posters he designed for the ilk of Hendrix and Dylan, and the album covers he did for supergroup Cream, featuring Eric Clapton.
Sharp had lived in Sydney since the 1970s and Tunnicliffe said he was a pop artist who "really engaged with the city, its people and really reminded us of our history and our beloved institutions".
