Susan Estrich: "What Newt Knows (and Cain Doesn't)" (Creators Syndicate)
If you take a gander at Newt Gingrich's Wikipedia page, in the personal section, you'll see quite a pile of baggage. Most of us have some. He has more than most: three marriages, messy divorces, affairs, etc. But here's the difference between Gingrich, the experienced politician, and the hopelessly inexperienced Herman Cain. Newt's baggage is all packed up - which is what you're supposed to do with your baggage before you take off on a presidential campaign, not in the middle of it.
Patrick Goldstein: "Herzog: I'm pretty sure Jesus wouldn't favor capital punishment" (LA Times)
For years I've labored under the misapprehension that Werner Herzog was simply what we in the film trade would call an auteur - a gifted and compelling filmmaker fascinated by people who test the limits of madness and folly, as he demonstrated in such celebrated films as "Aguirre, Wrath of God" and "Fitzcarraldo." But in recent years, as he has increasingly turned to documentaries, another side of Herzog has emerged: His fascination with what you might call philosophical journalism.
Late Night: Stephen Colbert 'worried' about vodka tampon craze (LA Times)
Every night in cities across America, local news anchors strike fear into the hearts of millions of viewers with sensationalized, fear-mongering tales of threats such as killer bees and gun-toting toddlers. On Tuesday, Stephen Colbert lampooned a report about a supposed new teenage craze: using vodka-soaked tampons to get drunk. (Let's all say it together: Ewwwww.)

Lawrence Stuart "Larry" Talbot is a fictional character and antihero who appears as the protagonist of the 1941 Universal film The Wolf Man, where he was portrayed by Lon Chaney, Jr. In the 2010 remake of the film, he is portrayed by Academy Award-winner Benicio del Toro.

PS: Trying to decide if I should go down to Wall Street and support the OZP crowd. It is a gray and cool day, and I can get a but straight to 42nd street - but do I want to deal with the subway after that? I think the protest is going on all WE, and I have the kids on Saturday, hummmm. What to do?
Dale of Diamond Springs replied:
This one is too easy. Lon Chaney Jr. was named Lawrence Talbot in the 1941 film "The Werewolf". He wasn't an alter ego. He was bitten by a beast that changed from man to monster when the wolfbane was in bloom under a full moon. But of course his best portrayal was in Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein.
David L responded:
The Wolfman.
MAM took the day off.
C. Talbott wrote:
I want to make clear that Lawrence, being a 2 "T" Talbot, was definitely from the other side of the family. Some of the male 2 "T" Talbots tended to become quite hirsute and dangerous at a certain time of the month, when the moon was full. Rumor had it that Lawrence was one of these "Wolfmen" and just couldn't help doing the awful things he did. He was eventually sent to debtor's prison for running up large bills for hair and fang care products. We 3 "T" Talbotts try to avoid connection to his notorious lupine side of the family. We are still jealous that cousin Larry got to be a movie star despite his unkempt appearance and nasty habits.
And, Joe S answered:

NBC's "Community" may be the most creative sitcom on television, but its refusal to resemble anything like a traditional sitcom hasn't helped its ratings. They've dropped so much in the current, third season -- the weirdest yet -- that NBC has pulled it from the midseason schedule.
The network says "Community" will return at some point, and the show's creator, Dan Harmon, declined to comment. But the show's increasing bizarreness has caused even some of its biggest fans to wonder if it has become too strange for its own good.
In its first two seasons, the show about a community college study group has aired paintball-themed episodes that played like a spaghetti Western, a Halloween show that mimicked a zombie-apocalypse movie, and an Emmy-winning Christmas episode in which all the characters were rendered in Claymation.
The show averaged 5 million viewers its first season and 4.5 million last year, but is only hovering around 3.5 million for the 2011-12 campaign. For last Thursday's episode, "Community" scored only a 1.5 ratings/4 share in the key adults 18-49 demographic, compared to a 5.3/15 for "Big Bang Theory."
A program that lets writers be inspired by staying in the home where humorist James Thurber once lived is being revived in honor of an Associated Press journalist who died last year.
The John E. Nance Writer-In-Residence Program has been announced by Thurber House in Columbus, Ohio.
A writer will be chosen each year to receive a $4,000 stipend and have four weeks to spend living and working at Thurber House.
The house is now a museum and literary center. It was the boyhood home of Thurber, who was known for short stories and cartoons he contributed to The New Yorker.

The Salzburg Festival has commissioned new operas from composers Gyorgy Kurtag, Marc-Andre Dalbavie, Thomas Ades and Jorg Widmann that will premiere one per summer from 2013-16.
The ambitious program of contemporary music was announced this week by new artistic director Alexander Pereira, who will oversee the Austrian festival for the first time next summer.
"Salzburg has to be adventurous," Pereira said. "The fact that we decided to commission these works means Salzburg wants to be ahead of the newest developments. These elements were very important to me, that Salzburg pushes forward the development of contemporary music."
Known for conservatism under Herbert von Karajan from 1957-89, the Salzburg Festival took an avant-garde turn under Gerard Mortier (1990-01).

The board of directors of Crystal Cathedral Ministries announced Thursday that its preferred buyer for the megachurch's campus is the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange.
The announcement came just before a bankruptcy court hearing at which a judge was expected to decide between competing offers from the diocese and Chapman University.
The Catholic diocese wants the property for a cathedral of its own, while the university would use it to expand educational programs.
A board statement said it preferred terms of the $57.5 million Catholic bid for the Orange County cathedral, longtime home of the "Hour of Power" broadcast.
"They're no different than any other business. They have to market themselves, and they have a particular branding and they've put all their eggs in that basket," said Richard Flory, director of research at University of Southern California's Center for Religion and Civic Culture. "That would be a difficult transition for them to make."
