Roger Ebert: This land was made for you and me (suntimes.com)
As the mighty tide swept the land on Tuesday night, I was transfixed. As the pundits pondered red states and blue states, projections and exit polls, I was swept with emotion. Not because America was "electing its first Black president." That comes a little late in the day. It was because America was electing the right President.
Malcolm Glad: THE USES OF ADVERSITY (newyorker.com)
At one board meeting, Ellis writes, "a long presentation was being made that was overloaded with dull, detailed statistics. Number after number was read off. When the droning presenter finally paused for breath, Weinberg jumped up, waving his papers in mock triumph, to call out 'Bingo!' " The immigrant's best strategy, in the famous adage, is to think Yiddish and dress British. Weinberg thought British and dressed Yiddish.
Ed Morales: Colombian band Aterciopelados takes you to the river (Newsday)
Since its beginnings in the early '90s, Aterciopelados has evolved from a post-punk rock group that featured lead vocalist Andrea Echeverri as a free-spirited woman not quite ready for children to a psychedelic groove band with tropical beats and a family-friendly ethos. "Rio" (Nacional Records), the band's latest release, follows along this evolutionary line, invoking its passions about ecology, Colombia's indigenous tribes, the visceral nature of being a woman and the country's delicate political situation.
Sal Nunziato: "Boz Scaggs: The Lowdown on Singing Standards" (huffingtonpost.com)
On his new release, Speak Low, Scaggs revisits the Great American Songbook, 5 years after his #1 jazz album, But Beautiful. What makes Speak Low stand out among other "standards" records is that it doesn't really stand out. It is so sublime, so natural, you never for a minute think of Boz Scaggs' past. You simply get lost in the beauty of the record itself.

Joseph V. Amodio: Fast chat with Elisabeth Moss of 'Mad Men' (Newsday)
Elisabeth Moss floats into the Ethel Barrymore Theatre a day after "Speed-the-Plow's" opening night. She was at the cast party till dawn and slept till 4 p.m., she admits. In her dressing room, every surface is covered with flowers. Vase after vase, including one packed with a remarkably fragrant bundle of several dozen white roses.
Chris Lee: "Kevin Smith directs 'Zack and Miri Make a Porno' (and his weight)" (latimes.com)
After his new movie "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" reaches theaters Friday, Kevin Smith plans to start counting his calories. Since his doctor called him morbidly obese, he's giving up the all-you-can-eat lifestyle and taking a "health sabbatical" intended to shed extra pounds he packed on while filming the raunchy, Seth Rogen-starring romantic comedy in Pittsburgh last year.
Roger Ebert: ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO (R; 3 stars)
Kevin Smith begins with the advantage of being raised with deeply embedded senses of sin and guilt. He's 38, and he still believes sex is dirty, and that it's funny to shock people with four-letter words and enough additional vulgarisms to fill out a crossword puzzle.

Glassblowing is a glass forming technique which was invented by the Phoenicians at approximately 50 B.C. somewhere along the Syro-Palestinian coast.

Been a generation since I studied any of this, but I think the Babylonians were past their prime and the Etruscans had been bludgeoned by the Romans by 50 BCE. The Celts and Visigoths didn't get their acts to gether until a couple of centuries into the CE. The Phoenicians were still a trading and seafaring people and needed relatively lightweight vessels for some of their goods. And they had access to lots of sand. I guess D.

The Celts were responsible for a lot, but in my travels around the UK,
glassmaking is not much talked about.
The other cultures rose and fell long before 50 BC.

In approximately 50 BC, glassblowing was invented by the good old Semitic Phoenicians (D). The Phoenicians are AKA the Canaanites of biblical fame - and the Phoenician alphabet is the Mother of modern writing - not that you asked of course. I just love the Bronze Age (and as such, our NEW President)!

Obamamania met Beatlemania Thursday, as Liverpool hosted an MTV Europe Music Awards show energized by the city's musical heritage and the U.S. presidential election.
Pink and Kanye West took home prizes - Britney Spears won two - and stars on the stage included Beyonce, Kid Rock and former Beatle Paul McCartney.
But the absent president-elect was given star status, too.
Singer Katy Perry, who hosted the show and also was named best new act, appeared in a dress emblazoned with Obama's face and quipped that "maybe Europeans will love us again now."
McCartney's acceptance speech was more modest. "I want to thank my mum and dad," he said, going on to pay tribute to his bandmates in The Beatles, the people of Liverpool and Americans, "for voting in Senator Obama."

Billie-Jean King, the legend who helped found the WTA Tour, has explained how she believes her sport will help change things for the better for women in the Middle East.
King believes that step by gradual step and in harness with care and respect, tennis can open minds and bring improvement in a region of the globe where women often have limited rights.
"Women make up 70 percent of the poverty in this world, which is why micro-financing is important and why having the Sony Ericsson championships here is so important," King said, referring to the women's season-end event.
This week's tournament is the biggest tennis tournament ever held in the Middle East, and the partnership of WTA and UNESCO is using it to confer upon King the title of global mentor for gender equity.
Geeks save the date: NBC Universal has finalized plans to auction props, costumes and set pieces from Sci Fi Channel's concluding cult-favorite "Battlestar Galactica."
The company has booked a weekend at the Pasadena Convention Center for the auction, coinciding with the return of the show on January 16.
Plans include a preview day, panels with various designers on the series, two auction days, an online auction of 200 items and then weekly auctions of additional items thereafter to coincide with the final batch of "Battlestar" episodes airing on Sci Fi Channel.
The isolated Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan crowned a new king Thursday, placing a charismatic Oxford-educated bachelor as head of state of the world's newest democracy.
With the rest of the world gripped by the historic US election win for Barack Obama, all eyes in Bhutan were on 28-year-old Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, now the world's youngest reigning monarch.
In an ancient Buddhist ritual in the white-walled palace overlooking the picturesque Thimphu valley, Wangchuck was handed Bhutan's Raven Crown by his father.
The deeply revered former king, who is 52, abdicated two years ago as part of his plan to reform and modernise the staunchly traditional and insular nation of just over 600,000 people by ending absolute royal rule.

The lowly stick could be a magic wand, a knight's sword or a fishing rod.
Now the universal plaything has landed in the National Toy Hall of Fame, along with Baby Doll and the skateboard.
The three were chosen Thursday to join the lineup at the Strong National Museum in Rochester, N.Y. Previous inductees include the bicycle, Mr. Potato Head, Crayola crayons and the cardboard box.
Curators say the stick is a special addition. They praised its all-purpose, all-natural, no-cost qualities. They also noted its ability to serve either as raw material or an appendage transformed by a child's imagination.
Daryl Hall and John Oates have filed a lawsuit saying their music publisher failed to protect their rights to their 1982 hit "Maneater."
The pop duo's lawsuit says they learned in April 2007 that an unidentified singer-songwriter had used "Maneater" in a 2006 recording.
The papers, filed in Manhattan's state Supreme Court, claim Warner/Chappell Music Inc. breached its publishing contract with Hall and Oates by refusing "in bad faith" to sue for copyright infringement.
The singers seek unspecified money damages and want to terminate their agreement with Warner/Chappell.

Authorities say rapper Mos Def is being sought on an arrest warrant in Las Vegas after allegedly scuffling with a photographer at a fashion trade show in August.
Police say the 35-year-old rapper, whose real name is Dante Terrell Smith, is wanted on a warrant charging him with felony robbery and misdemeanor malicious destruction of property.
Officer Ramon Denby says police want Smith to surrender himself.
Sixty-year-old photographer Volker Correl was taking photos at the Men's Apparel and Garment Industry Convention when he says Smith ripped the camera from around his neck.
Disney XD, the network that will launch in February following the rebranding of Toon Disney, is developing a live-action pilot about a rock band.
The project, titled "I'm With the Band," centers on a tween boy who gets hired as the lead guitarist for a Spinal Tap-type band that was popular in the '80s and is looking to make a comeback. It was created by Michael Kaplan ("Frasier") and Ron Rappaport (MTV's "Next").
Disney said in August that it will rebrand its U.S.-based Toon Disney TV and online platforms as Disney XD, featuring a mix of live-action and animated programing targeted primarily to boys 6-14. Inaugural programing will include the live-action series "Aaron Stone."
The global economic downturn hit Walt Disney Co's quarterly results harder and faster than Wall Street expected, with the company on Thursday reporting a sharp decline in hotel bookings and softness in advertising revenue at its networks.
Disney's shares slid 9 percent in extended trade but recovered a bit after executives announced plans to discount stays at Walt Disney World to stimulate bookings in the first half of 2009.
"Consumer confidence is the lowest we've seen in over three decades, and even the best product out there is feeling the effect," Disney Chief Executive Robert Iger told analysts on a conference call.
A rare map of Canada in which French explorer Samuel de Champlain renders his view of New France will be the highlight of a Sotheby's sale in London next week.
The finely engraved document was drawn by Champlain in 1612 and is being billed as "the most important single map in the history of Canada" and "a foundation document for Canada."
Sotheby's says the map was drawn from Champlain's personal observations, made in more than 20 voyages to Canada and New England.
It's also touted as the first printed map to allude to the St. Lawrence River and Great Lakes system based on factual (rather than hearsay or imaginary) evidence.
