Paul Krugman: Paul Ryan Is Choking On His Own Mystery Meat (NY Times Blog)
Now, a cynic might have expected Republicans to go for full-on cynicism: "What, you took it seriously when we talked about fiscal responsibility? The joke's one you! Ha ha ha!" And to a certain extent that is what they've done: after all the deficit-hawk posturing, they're openly admitting that their intention is to increase the deficit by $1.5 trillion.
Andrew Tobias: Oh, Boy! Tax Cuts
The way to juice the economy and create good jobs isn't yet more tax breaks for the wealthy. It's massive tax-payer-funded infrastructure renewal.
Roseanne Roseannadanna is one of several recurring characters created by Gilda Radner, who appeared on Weekend Update in the early seasons of Saturday Night Live(SNL), which aired on the NBC network. She was the segment's consumer affairs reporter who, like an earlier Radner character Emily Litella, editorialized on current issues, only to go off-topic before interrupted by the anchor. Unlike Litella's meek and apologetic character, Roseannadanna was brash and tactless. The character was based on Rose Ann Scamardella, a former anchorwoman on WABC-TV's Eyewitness News in New York City. The character also appeared later in Radner's live one-woman shows.
Roseannadanna's Saturday Night Live commentary followed a strict formula. She usually read a letter from Richard Feder of Fort Lee, New Jersey, although she once read a letter from his wife, "Mrs." Richard Feder. (The Feders later re-located to Mount St. Helens, Washington.) The letter would include a series of questions, usually about a current social issue, to which Roseannadanna made derogatory comments about New Jersey before moving on to respond to the question. An in-joke, Richard Feder (pronounced as "Fay-der") was the name of an actual resident of Fort Lee who also happened to be the brother-in-law of SNL writer and segment co-creator Alan Zweibel.

"The Late Show" has pulled a segment featuring Jeremy Piven amid an investigation into an allegation that he groped reality star Ariane Bellamar.
A spokesperson for the late night series told ABC News, "Jeremy Piven's interview for Friday's broadcast was pre-taped earlier this week on Monday, October 30. Since we were unable to address recent developments in that interview, we are replacing that segment with a new guest."
In a series of tweets, the former Playboy Playmate claimed Piven "forcefully" groped her on the set of HBO series "Entourage" and at the Playboy Mansion. She also accused Piven of sending "sexual" and "threatening" text messages.
"'Member grabbing my boobies on the [sofa] without asking?? 'Member when I tried to leave; you grabbed me by the a--, looked at yourself in the mirror, & said what a 'beautiful couple' we made?" she tweeted Monday.
CBS, the network responsible for broadcasting Piven's drama "Wisdom of the Crowd" and "The Late Show," said in a statement Tuesday that they are investigating Bellamar's accusations.

Mexican actor Roberto Cavazos accused Kevin Spacey on Tuesday of sexual harassment, echoing claims made by actor Anthony Rapp and predicting a "whole lot more" accusations against the two-time Oscar winner will emerge.
Cavazos, who acted in several plays at London's Old Vic theater when Spacey was artistic director there, said the Hollywood star routinely preyed on young male actors.
"It seems the only requirement was to be a male under the age of 30 for Mr Spacey to feel free to touch us," he wrote in a Facebook post.
He said Rapp -- the American actor who accuses Spacey of making a "sexual advance" when he was 14 and Spacey was 26 -- was far from alone.
"It wouldn't surprise me if there were similar numbers to Weinstein's," he added, referring to the dozens of women who have accused Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault and harassment, unleashing a torrent of similar accusations against a growing list of rich and powerful men.
A new species of orangutan has been discovered in the remote jungles of Indonesia, immediately becoming the world's most endangered great ape, researchers said Thursday.
"It's the first declaration of a new great ape species in about 100 years," Ian Singleton, co-author of the study and director of the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme, told AFP.
The species, called 'Tapanuli orangutan', lives in the Batang Toru forest on Sumatra island, and numbers only about 800 in total, making it the most endangered great ape in the world, Singleton added.
Until recently, scientists thought there were only two genetically distinct types of orangutan, Bornean and Sumatran.
Outwardly the Tapanuli orangutan bears a closer resemblance to its Bornean counterpart, with cinnamon-coloured fur that is frizzier than its Sumatran relative. It also has a "prominent moustache", according to the findings published in the journal Current Biology.

Stephen Hawking is concerned that artificial intelligence could replace humans.
The world-renowned physicist fears that somebody will create AI that will keep improving itself until it's eventually superior to people.
He says the result of this will be a "new form" of life.
"I fear that AI may replace humans altogether," he said in an interview with Wired magazine, seen by Cambridge News.
"If people design computer viruses, someone will design AI that improves and replicates itself. This will be a new form of life that outperforms humans."
Nestled between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans is Greenland, a slab of ice and rock that has caused more controversy than one might expect from the least densely populated country in thew world. For a long time, the Mercator map misrepresented Greenland as a giant land mass almost as big as Africa, but a 1970s reassessment cut it down to size, showing that it's actually only about one-fourteenth of the continent's area.
Now, in a cruel coincidence, new NASA maps show that Greenland is actually - physically - shrinking, and it's happening at a much quicker pace than scientists once thought.
On Wednesday, in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, a team of NASA scientists together with collaborators from over 30 institutions published the most accurate high-resolution maps of Greenland's bedrock and coastal seafloor, using data from NASA's OMG campaign - short for Ocean Melting Greenland, but apt for describing its scary findings. The maps revealed some terrible news for the country's 54,100 inhabitants: While scientists had long known that some of the glaciers comprising the icy landmass were melting because of climate change, it now appears that up to four times the original number of glaciers are under threat.
"These results suggest that Greenland's ice is more threatened by changing climate than we had anticipated," said Jet Propulsion Laboratory scientist Josh Willis, who wasn't involved in making the maps, in a statement from NASA.
The new maps suggest that the effects of climate change on Greenland will be seen much sooner than expected. It's hard to estimate the rate of glacier melt without knowledge of how they move and how deep the glaciers extend underwater, but the OMG data revealed what was going on beneath the water's surface. It showed that two to four times as many glaciers actually extend deeper than 600 feet below sea level than scientists previously thought.

If you are inside the "alt-right" information bubble, you might be preparing yourself for a civil war to commence this Saturday.
Since late September, the idea has been circulating on Facebook groups, subreddit message boards, Twitter, and leading conspiracy media outlets that on 4 November, anti-fascist groups will begin a violent insurrection.
Some websites are telling their readers that antifa groups are "planning to kill every single Trump voter, Conservative and gun owner" this weekend. Hundreds of Facebook posts show how seriously consumers of such media are taking the news, and comments like "One more threat against white people and I swear to God I'm going to take a goddamn car and run over every fucking one of them" are not unrepresentative of the response.
But antifa groups have no plans to protest that day, and the small leftist groups who are planning protests have only dubious connections to the antifa movement. So what gives?
The whole thing rests on some very slender reeds, according to Spencer Sunshine, who recently wrote a report on the theories for the far right-monitoring group Political Research Associates. In the conspiracy underground on YouTube, he explains, there has been talk that "there was going to be a civil war" starting in November for some months.
The Senate voted Wednesday to confirm Joan Larsen to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit ? a nominee opposed by 27 LGBTQ rights groups with concerns about her views on civil rights.
Larsen was confirmed to the lifetime post on a 60-38 vote. All Republicans and eight Democrats voted for her, including Sens. Tom Carper (Del.), Joe Donnelly (Ind.), Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.), Joe Manchin (W.Va.), Bill Nelson (Fla.), Gary Peters (Mich.), Debbie Stabenow (Mich.) and Mark Warner (Va.).
Groups including Lambda Legal and the National LGBT Bar Association had been urging senators to reject Larsen's nomination. They were among more than two dozen LGBTQ rights groups that sent a letter to the Judiciary Committee warning that Larsen's "views on civil rights issues are fundamentally at odds with the notion that LGBT people are entitled to equality, liberty, justice and dignity under the law."
Larsen is the second of four conservative judicial nominees the Senate is confirming to U.S. circuit court seats this week.
The Senate voted Tuesday to confirm Amy Coney Barrett to a lifetime post on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit. Barrett has said Roe v. Wade was an "erroneous decision" and took a speaking fee from the Alliance Defending Freedom, a rabidly anti-LGBTQ group that's defended forced sterilization for transgender people.

U.S. officials said Wednesday they have proposed ending the Obama administration's ban on new uranium mining leases on public land outside Grand Canyon National Park.
The Forest Service proposed the change in response to President-for-now Donald Trump's (R-Fat Fingered Vulgarian) executive order for federal agencies to eliminate restrictions on energy production.
"Adoption of this recommendation could reopen lands to mineral entry pursuant to the United States mining laws facilitating exploration for, and possibly development of, uranium resources," according to a report last week by the Forest Service's parent agency, the Department of Agriculture.
Conservationists are decrying the Forest Service's move, saying past uranium mining in the region has polluted soils, washes, aquifers and drinking water.
"The Forest Service should be advocating for a permanent mining ban, not for advancing private mining interests that threaten one of the natural wonders of the world," said Amber Reimondo, energy program director of the Grand Canyon Trust based in Flagstaff, Arizona.
Scientists have found a hidden chamber in Egypt's Great Pyramid of Giza, the first such discovery in the structure since the 19th century and one likely to spark a new surge of interest in the pharaohs.
In an article published in the journal Nature on Thursday, an international team said the 30-metre void deep within the pyramid is situated above the structure's Grand Gallery, and has a similar cross-section.
The purpose of the chamber is unclear, and it's not yet known whether it was built with a function in mind.
The scientists made the discovery using cosmic-ray imaging, recording the behavior of subatomic particles called muons that penetrate the rock similar to X-rays, only much deeper. Their paper was peer-reviewed before appearing in Nature, an international science journal.
The pyramid is also known as Khufu's Pyramid for its builder, a 4th Dynasty pharaoh who reigned from 2509-2483BC.
