Tom Danehy: Tom muses about the weather, voting by mail and the pathetic journey of Rudy Giuliani (Tucson Weekly)
Back when denis leary was stand-up comedian, he did this edgy bit where he wished that someone would invent a time machine so that he could go back in time and kill Elvis Presley right about the time that the King of Rock and Roll was going into the military. That way, we could all remember him as that dangerous guy with the greasy hair and the slippery hips, fearlessly singing black music with joy and a sneer. Instead, we also have to lug around memories of the guy who made one crappy movie after another, married his jailbait squeeze, and then finally became this bloated caricature of himself, doling out schmaltz in Vegas while wearing an embarrassing white jumpsuit. I think about that every time I see sad, pathetic Rudy Giuliani stomping all over the grave of what was once his wonderful public image.
Helaine Olen: Boeing's CEO plays the 'I'm sorry' game (Washington Post)
It's an all-too-common refrain, and it isn't helping anyone. … I have no doubt Muilenburg is sorry for all the deaths and lost profits, but if there's one thing the events of the past years and the two days of congressional hearings made clear, there's precious little evidence Boeing's culture has changed much in response to the double tragedy. No apology, no matter how heartfelt or well meaning, can compensate for that.
Rachel Handler: The Scariest Horror Movie of All Time Is Revolutionary Road (Vulture)
There is […] one film that can still reach the recesses of my dilapidated brain. It is the scariest movie I have ever seen. It provides me with nightmare fuel to this day. Even thinking of it on a warm summer's eve, I shudder, chilled to the bone, pulling my floral cardigan tightly around my shoulders, wondering if that long shadow on the driveway is just my imagination. This film is Revolutionary Road, which came out on Christmas 2008, and was billed, incredibly, as a "romance."
Jordan Crucchiola: "Mackenzie Davis Genuinely Can't Find a Male Gaze in Terminator: Dark Fate" (Vulture)
Q: And how is it being the one on the poster with the chain wrapped around your arms?
A: It feels like seeing an avatar. I was in London with my friend while we were there for press, and we were walking around and a bus went by with the movie on it. It's like you have a ghost self that goes and does these things, and you don't really look anything like that person or share any of their qualities, but you're like, "Aw, she's on a bus!" So, it's weird, but then also feels so other that you can just be like, "Oh, look at her. Look at her doing that! She has nothing to do with me, but there she is."
The T-Bones' single "No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach's In)" first appeared in a commercial that featured only the midsections (no faces) of people of all shapes and sizes. What product was being sold in the commercial?
Alka-Seltzer is an effervescent antacid and pain reliever first marketed by the Dr. Miles Medicine Company of Elkhart, Indiana, United States. Alka-Seltzer contains three active ingredients: aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) (ASA), sodium bicarbonate, and anhydrous citric acid. The aspirin is a pain reliever and anti-inflammatory, the sodium bicarbonate is an antacid, and the citric acid reacts with the sodium bicarbonate and water to form effervescence.
Alka-Seltzer had a series of commercials during the mid-1960s that used a song called "No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach's In)". A different version was recorded by The T-Bones and was released as a single, which became a hit in 1966. The ads were unique in that they featured only the midsections (no faces) of people of all shapes and sizes. A version of this ad can be seen briefly in the 1988 motion picture The In Crowd, immediately before the movie's first live broadcast of the fictitious "Perry Parker's Dance Party."

Alka-Seltzer. The song was written for the ad, and then a longer version was released and went to #3 on the 1966 Billboard chart. Seeking to promote the song by going on the road, Liberty records was unable to persuade the members of The Wrecking Crew (credited as the T-Bones) to do it. So, other musicians (none of whom played on the record) were recruited to perform as the 'public' T-Bones and played the song live on TV shows, were photographed for record covers, and what not. The studio T-Bones came together periodically as Liberty Record's house band and recorded such mid '60s albums as "Boss drag at the Beach" and "Doin' the Jerk." Although the 'public' T-Bones members actually did record the last T-Bones album, "Everyone's Gone to the Moon (and Other Trips)."
Photos: 'public' T-Bones | 1964 studio T-Bones album "Boss Drag" | If you aren't already confused there was also a UK group the T-Bones during the mid-60s, usually called Gary Farr and the T-Bones. None of the UK group's singles ever charted.

That would be Alka-Seltzer. Does anybody remember Fizzies? You put them a glass of water and Hey Presto a sparkling effervescent beverage! That tasted worse than Alka-Selter. Somebody in 8th grade put a handfull in the science room tropical fish tank and killed them all! Good times...

Plop, plop, fizz, fizz, oh what a relief it is. Alka seltzer. I know of a guy, not personally, I just know of him, anyway he used to go to a drug store soda fountain every day and have three bromo seltzers. Not the same as alka seltzer, I know, but something to think about. Any way pretty soon the guy turned yellow and died. Just thought you might want to know about that.

• A skip-rat is a person who rummages through refuse looking for still usable items. One skip-rat in New York, Elizabeth Gibson, found something better than just usable: a painting worth $1 million. The painting, created in 1970, is Tres Personajes (Three People), by Rufino Tamayo, and she found it by some rubbish bags in November of 2003. Although the painting is large (51 inches by 38 inches), she was struck by it and carried it home only 20 minutes before a garbage truck arrived to carry away the rubbish. The painting had been missing for 20 years. In 1977, it had been purchased at Sotheby's for $55,000, but it turned up stolen after having been placed in storage while the owner was moving. Ms. Gibson kept the painting for several months in her apartment, then she started to investigate it, helped by the signature "Tamayo 0-70" on the painting. Eventually, she discovered a reproduction of the painting in a monograph at a library. Knowing that the painting was most likely very valuable, she built a false wall in her apartment, behind which she kept the painting. She then contacted a Sotheby's art expert, who came to her apartment and saw the painting. The expert, August Uribe, said, "This has been nothing short of a miracle. That such an important painting, missing for a generation, was rescued in this way - and in such pristine condition - continues to astound me." The painting has been returned to its rightful owner, who placed it for sale at Sotheby's, and Ms. Gibson received both a $15,000 reward for returning the painting to its rightful owner as well as a finder's fee from Sotheby's.
• John Varley, a painter who was an acquaintance of William Blake, was generous - too generous. He gave much of his money to the needy, with the result that he sometimes found himself in debtors' prison. He would simply take his painting supplies with him to prison, and then he would paint and sell paintings until he had paid his debts and could get out of prison. He was also an astrologer, and one day he believed that the planet Uranus was having an evil influence on him and he would suffer something bad before noon that day. A little before noon, he said that he was feeling well and that therefore the threat must not be to his person but to his property. Just then, the cry of "Fire!" was heard, and he rushed into the street and saw that his house was on fire. As it burned to the ground, he wrote a paper about the astrological influences of the planet Uranus.
• According to legend, when Rembrandt first sold a painting in The Hague, he received a large sum of money. He took a coach back home to Leiden, but because he was carrying so much money he did not leave the coach when it stopped at an inn. Somehow, the horses pulling the coach ran away when the driver and other passengers were inside the inn. They pulled Rembrandt and the coach all the way to Leiden. Rembrandt was very happy, both because he had sold a painting for a large sum of money and because he had received a free coach ride home. According to another legend, Rembrandt won a bet when he created the etching Six's Bridge in 1645. He had bet that he could create the etching before a servant could go to a nearby village and return with a pot of mustard.
• In 2010, graffiti artist Banksy paid a visit to Detroit, where he created works of art (without permission) in four places. His Kid Draws his Garden on Cass Avenue appeared on a wall of a vacant building on Cass Avenue, near the Curl Up and Dye salon, which specializes in punk-chic styles. The hairdressers there loved the Banksy, but they didn't own or manage the building that the Banksy was painted on, and the powers-that-be had the Banksy power-washed off, despite the pleas of the hairdressers. Too bad. Travis R. Wright, author of the article "Banksy bombs Detroit," writes, "That wall with Banksy was worth at least twice as much as the whole property's asking price."

A host of journalists have resigned from website Deadspin - a sports website that often made forays into covering politics, pop culture and media - after a memo was sent to staff instructing reporters to only focus on sports.
The resignations followed the firing of Deadspin's interim editor in chief, Barry Petchesky, earlier this week after he refused to comply with the "stick to sports" mandate from the site's parent company G/O Media.
As of Wednesday, the New York Times reported that eight Deadspin journalists had resigned. Three more staffers, Dan McQuade, Dom Consentino, and Luis Paez-Pumar, announced their resignations on Twitter earlier today.
In the memo, G/O Media, which owns several former Gawker websites including Jezebel, Gizmodo, and Deadspin, said that topics such as politics, media, and pop culture should be left to the company's other properties.
What has many scratching their heads is why Deadspin's parent company would want to steer the site away from producing content that brings in clicks, and therefore cash. Deadspin's non-sports content was not only popular but often deeply reported journalism.
Aaron Sorkin, screenwriter of director David Fincher's Facebook bio-drama The Social Network, is publicly calling out Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg for continuing his company's "practice of posting demonstrably false ads from political candidates."
In an open letter published today on The New York Times website, Sorkin condemns Zuckerberg's defense of the social network's ongoing refusal to fact-check and restrict the political ads it runs. In his op-ed, Broadway's To Kill A Mockingbird playwright says he share's Zuckerberg's "deep belief" in free speech, but adds that "this can't possibly be the outcome you and I want, to have crazy lies pumped into the water supply that corrupt the most important decisions we make together. Lies that have a very real and incredibly dangerous effect on our elections and our lives and our children's lives."
Sorkin also weaves in anecdotes about the writing and filming of The Social Network and the "irony" of Zuckerberg's accusations then "that the movie was a lie."
Writes Sorkin, "It was hard not to feel the irony while I was reading excerpts from your recent speech at Georgetown University, in which you defended - on free speech grounds - Facebook's practice of posting demonstrably false ads from political candidates."
Sorkin goes on to note that "…right now, on your website, is an ad claiming that Joe Biden gave the Ukrainian attorney general a billion dollars not to investigate his son. Every square inch of that is a lie and it's under your logo. That's not defending free speech, Mark, that's assaulting truth."
Carly Simon may have had a strong bond with at least one important White House figure - her latest book, Touched by the Sun, documents her close friendship with former first lady Jackie Kennedy Onassis - but Donald Trump (R-Inept) certainly wasn't it.
In an interview with the U.K.'s Guardian newspaper, the singer recounted her run-in with the man who would become president. Though Simon doesn't say precisely when the Trump encounter happened, it was at a New York luncheon for Benazir Bhutto, the Pakistan prime minister who was assassinated in 2007, and therefore long before the billionaire turned to politics.
Simon said that Trump "wasn't paying any attention" to her, focusing instead on the "dignitaries" at the gathering. But then Bhutto invited her to discuss her music in private, which may have piqued Trump's interest.
"When I went out of the bedroom, obviously I had all of a sudden become important through the eyes of Donald Trump," the "Anticipation" singer said. "So he was very anxious to meet me and invited me to Mar-a-Lago and was all over me like ugly on an ape."
Simon declined the invite, however, "because I thought he was kind of repulsive."
Disco is alive and well, as Paramount has purchased the life rights to the family estate of The Bee Gees' Maurice, Robin and Barry Gibb, and the studio in the works on a music biopic based on the band's career, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Paramount purchased the life rights to the Gibb estate on behalf of "Bohemian Rhapsody" producer Graham King and his GK Films. Sister, the new company from Stacey Snider, Elisabeth Murdoch and "Chernobyl" producer Jane Featherstone, is coming aboard as either a co-producer or a co-financier the film, two other individuals of knowledge told TheWrap.
The Bee Gees formed in 1958 but shot to fame with its songs for the John Travolta film, "Saturday Night Fever," which featured the disco anthem "Stayin' Alive." The band has sold 220 million records worldwide and is one of the highest-selling pop music groups of all time. The trio was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. The band broke up in 2003 after Maurice Gibb died in 2003, and then Robin and Barry Gibb briefly reunited in 2009 before Robin's death in 2012.
Paramount recently had success with "Rocketman," a biopic based on the life of Elton John, which starred Taron Egerton, from earlier this year, which grossed $195.1 million worldwide. King's "Bohemian Rhapsody" landed a Best Picture Oscar nomination and remains the highest-grossing music biopic of all time with $903.6 million worldwide.
Federal law enforcement and homeland security officials warned about the growing threat of domestic terrorism at a House Homeland Security Committee hearing on Wednesday.
"The prevalent trend of Americans driven by violent extremist ideologies or personal grievances" to commit racially and ethnically motivated attacks has become "one of the most significant emergent threats" to national security, said acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan.
"We see domestic terrorism as [a] persistent, evolving threat," said FBI Director Christopher Wray, adding that domestic terrorists have committed more fatal attacks than international terrorists in the U.S. in recent years.
These concerns were echoed by Russell Travers, acting director of the National Counterterrorism Center at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and David Glawe, undersecretary in charge of DHS's Office of Intelligence and Analysis.
Wray clarified that "international terrorism is very much alive and well and something we need to stay focused on too." But he and the other witnesses emphasized how rapidly advancing technology and the increasingly disorganized nature of terrorism in general make homegrown terrorism uniquely dangerous at this time.
Chiyevedzo Mutero was one of dozens competing in the remote Zimbabwean bush to join the all-female anti-poaching Akashinga rangers when she broke her finger.
She didn't consider quitting -- she even smiled as her finger was bandaged, before returning to the brutal military-style training.
"I'm happy, that's why I am not crying. I'm trying to be an Akashinga girl," the 22-year-old said.
The rangers, armed and dressed in khaki combat gear, track and arrest poachers in five reserves, all former trophy hunting areas, encompassing 4,000 square kilometres (1,545 square miles) near the Zambian border in northern Zimbabwe.
If recruited, Mutero would become one of an elite few -- out of 500 applicants, only 80 will make it into the ranks of the Akashinga, or "brave ones" in local dialect.
