Like some B-movie space alienŠ "The Thing" is back, and it is coming at us with an insatiable appetite. If only The Thing was a piece of fiction. Unfortunately, it's all too real. It is the return of the nuclear power industry.

Where have all the boys gone? College admissions officers would sure like to know. Less than three decades ago, men dominated the nation's campuses. Today, they are significantly outnumbered by women, meaning that administrators have to choose between skewed ?male-?female ratios and affirmative action for the Y-chromosome. But colleges are merely the first responders to what could be an unprecedented societal event. That's right: Women are taking over.

Many artworks stolen from Jewish dealers in Germany before the war were never returned. But now they have been reproduced, in black and white, in an exhibition.
What is the dot over the letter 'i' (or the letter 'j') called?
A: Tilde
B: Tittle
C: Umlaut
D: Percy
Baron Dave ("What doesn't have credibility today is the truth." -- Bill Moyers,
The Daily Show 6/22/05) was first with the correct answer:
It's early and I'm late, but I must attend to every jot and tittle.
Second was Chipshot, writing:
That little device is called a tittle, unless you're analyzing the writing of many teenage girls, in which case you'd call it a li'l heart or happy face. Oddly enough, when I was stationed in Germany in the '80s, I worked with a guy named Percy Tittle. Tittle would always use the umlaut when writing German, and the tilde when writing Spanish. Did you know Percy too? or was your selection of Percy as choice "D" merely a coincidence?
mj was third:
A "Tittle'-ating experience
So I guess you can guess my answer is going to be B.
How did I miss sending in an answer yesterday?
Mark wrote:
That would be a tittle.
kitchenrat answered:
tittle
Carolyn said:
I think it's a tittle, as in "every jot and tittle".
Joe Showalter ("Iraq is clearly hubris carried to the point of insanity - it's damn hard to convince people you're killing them for their own good."
- Molly Ivins -) was succinct with:
B: Tittle
Sally P answered:
Well, I would say, in grammatical terms, each is a diacritic. But I'm sure that you are looking for the Latin, "titulus" translating to "diacritical mark," or "superscription."
So, my final answer is: B, or tittle.
And, Keith wrote:
I'll go with B Tittle
Yowee, Chipshot - Initially was gonna use the name 'Margaret', but decided it was more of a 'Percy' kind of question.
The only Tittle I ever heard of was YA, the football player.

Stevie Wonder's legendary voice broke slightly when he was asked Thursday about how his deceased mother inspired him to go on his current tour.
Wonder is obviously still grieving for his mother, Lula Mae Hardaway, who died May 31, 2006. She had gone into the hospital for "just a little thing," as he said she put it.
The music superstar, who has been honoured with 25 Grammy Awards and has been the voice for some of the best-known pop songs over the past four decades, wanted to pack it in for a while.
But it turned out his mom wasn't finished with him yet. "It was like my mother came to me in her voice and spirit and said, 'Boy, you better get your butt on the stage. Go on and do what you do and spread your love.' "

A copy of J.K. Rowling's first Harry Potter novel sold at auction Thursday for almost $41,000. The copy of the hardback first edition of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone," published in 1997 and signed "Joanne Rowling" on the back of the title page, was sold to an anonymous private bidder for $40,326 at Christie's auction house.
At a London auction in May, a copy of "Philosopher's Stone" inscribed with a personal dedication to the owner sold for more than $55,000, including buyer's premium.
The book was published by Bloomsbury PLC with an initial print run of about 500 copies. Many were purchased by libraries, making copies in good condition extremely rare.
It was published in the United States in 1998 as "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," and the boy wizard soon became a publishing phenomenon.
Just in time for its 25th anniversary, Trivial Pursuit is headed to television.
A half-hour strip titled "Trivial Pursuit: America Plays" is being developed for a fall 2008 launch in broadcast syndication. Format rights to the Hasbro brand also will be available to international territories.
The show will rely on user-generated content, whereby viewers submit questions via video uploads to participating station Web sites, which also will give them a chance to win money if their question stumps the in-studio contestant.

Actor Daniel Dae Kim was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving early Thursday by Honolulu police - the fourth actor on ABC's "Lost" to run into trouble with the law while filming in Hawaii.
Kim, who plays Korean tough guy Jin-Soo Kwon, was taken into custody before 3 a.m. local time and released after posting bail, police said.
Other "Lost" stars facing problems with the police in Hawaii include Michelle Rodriguez and Cynthia Watros, whose characters were killed off in 2005 after they both were arrested and pleaded guilty to drunken driving.
A year ago, Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje, the actor who played "Mr. Eko," was arrested for a traffic violation and accused of disobeying a police officer and driving without a license. The charges were dropped, but his character also was killed off.

The 26-year-old socialite - who has promised to use her celebrity status for good causes - was supposed to pack her bags for the African country next month. On her itinerary: visits to schools and health-care clinics.

Comedian Jim Belushi is being sued by the 78-year-old father of his former driver, who accuses him of selling a used 2001 Land Rover that turned out to be a lemon.
Ted Lewandowski worked as Belushi's driver when the star was filming the Walt Disney movie "Underdog" in Providence. He claims the SUV needed more than $6,000 in repairs - and he demands that Belushi pay.

A lock of socialist revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara's hair and related items were auctioned on Thursday in Dallas to a Houston-area bookstore owner for the very capitalist sum of $119,500 (52,000 pounds).
The curious collection had belonged to Gustavo Villoldo, 71, a former CIA operative who helped hunt Guevara down in the jungles of Bolivia in 1967 and who claims he cut off the lock before burying the guerrilla fighter with two of his comrades.
A scrapbook containing what Heritage says are previously unpublished photos of the dead guerrilla went with the hair. One shows a group of rag-tag soldiers brandishing rifles and standing proudly around his corpse like hunters posing with a trophy. Others show his corpse propped up, eyes wide open.
A judge on Thursday dismissed a hit-and-run case against pop star Britney Spears after her lawyer revealed an out-of-court settlement was reached with the person whose car she struck in a parking lot.
But the 25-year-old performer is still on the hook for a misdemeanor count of driving without a valid license in connection with the August 6 fender bender in Los Angeles, said City Attorney spokesman Frank Mateljan.
Spears' attorney on Thursday entered a not guilty plea on her behalf for that charge. She was not in court and is not required to be present for the next hearing, set for November 26.
Spears was due in court on Friday for a hearing in her ongoing custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline. She was reported earlier this week to have regained visitation rights to the couple's two young sons.

Fox's freshman comedy "Back to You," starring Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton as co-anchors at a local TV station, received a full-season pickup Wednesday.
The network ordered 11 additional episodes, bringing the total to 24 half-hours, two more than a regular 22-episode order.
While falling short of the blockbuster status of Grammer and Heaton's respective former series "Frasier" and "Everybody Loves Raymond," "Back" has been a solid performer for Fox in the Wednesday 8 p.m. time slot, opening a night that has been traditionally challenging for the network. Last week, the series drew 7.0 million viewers.
ABC's promising new Christina Applegate comedy "Samantha Who?" took a big step towards a full-season pickup Wednesday when the network ordered six additional scripts.
Based on an idea by best-selling Irish author Cecelia Ahern, "Samantha" has emerged as the highest-rated freshman comedy this season. Applegate plays a woman with amnesia.
In another sign that ABC plans to keep "Samantha" around, the network announced that the comedy, now airing after "Dancing with the Stars" Mondays 9:30 p.m., will slide back to 9 p.m. beginning November 26, the night of the one-hour final performance show of the current "Dancing" cycle. As previously announced, "Samantha" will be paired in the 9 p.m. hour with returning comedy "Notes From the Underbelly."
ABC is making another scheduling move in November, swapping newsmagazine "20/20" and the well-reviewed but low-rated sophomore dramedy "Men In Trees." Beginning November 2, "Men" will air at 8 p.m., while "20/20" will return in its traditional 10 p.m. slot.

The commanding officer of the nuclear-powered submarine USS Hampton was relieved of his duty Thursday because of a loss of confidence in his leadership, the Navy said.
Cmdr. Michael B. Portland was relieved of duty after a U.S. Navy investigation found the ship failed to do daily safety checks on its nuclear reactor for a month and falsified records to cover up the omission.
It appears from a preliminary investigation on the Hampton that sailors in Submarine Squadron 11 had skipped the required analysis of the chemical and radiological properties of the submarine's reactor for more than a month, even though a daily check is required.
Portland is the fourth commanding officer of a submarine to be relieved of duty this year. The other three, who were relieved for various unrelated actions, were: Cmdr. Edwin Ruff of the USS Minneapolis St. Paul, Cmdr. Matthew Weingart of the USS Newport News and Cmdr. William Schwalm of the USS Helena.
Prostitutes in the Bolivian city of El Alto sewed their lips together Wednesday as part of a hunger strike to demand that the mayor reopen brothels and bars ordered closed after violent protests by residents last week.
"We are fighting for the right to work and for our families' survival," Lily Cortez, leader of the El Alto Association of Nighttime Workers, told local television.
Mayor Fanor Nava told local radio he would not reopen the brothels and bars closed after city residents fed up with underage drinking and crime stormed the red-light district in El Alto, an impoverished city just north of La Paz.
