Paul Waldman and Greg Sargent: To protect Trump, Republicans are staging a display of lawlessness. It's failing. (Washington Post)
The events we just witnessed in the House of Representatives will surely earn an honored place in the annals of congressional clownishness. Just as the House Intelligence Committee was preparing to hear testimony from another important witness in the impeachment inquiry, a couple dozen Republican members of Congress stormed into the room, phones in hand, and started live-tweeting their protest.

Paul Waldman: Even the undisputed facts of this scandal are damning. Here's what we know. (Washington Post)
In the wake of William B. Taylor Jr.'s blockbuster testimony in the impeachment inquiry, Republicans tasked with defending President Trump may be having trouble keeping track of which argument they're supposed to offer next. Was there no quid pro quo with Ukraine, or are quid pro quos just fine? Was President Trump not trying to get the Ukrainians to dig up dirt on Joe Biden, or was he right to do so? Was there no abuse of power, or is it the case that, as Trump's former acting attorney general Matthew Whitaker put it, "Abuse of power is not a crime"?

Bilge Ebiri: Okay, Fine, Let's Talk About Marvel (Vulture)
We might even be able to trace some of the intolerance of our disagreements in the real world, where opposing views become unacceptable and we live through constant, numbing cycles of hyperbole and constant accusation, to the fact that the stories we tell each other - the cultural products that are supposed to both shape and reflect our experiences - are mostly made up of simple narratives, simple quandaries, simple resolutions.

Jordan Crucchiola: Bob Iger Says Directors Are Entitled to 'Bitch' About Marvel Movies (Vulture)
"It doesn't bother me, except I'm bothered on behalf of the people who work on those movies," Iger told the moderator of his in conversation event. "They're entitled to their own opinions. Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese are two people I hold in the highest regard in terms of the films they've made, the films I like, the films that we've all watched. But when Francis uses the words, 'Those films are despicable,' I reserve the word despicablefor someone who committed mass murder. These are movies."

Jordan Crucchiola and Brian Tallerico: The 50 Best Horror Movies on Netflix Right Now (Vulture)
As the horror genre continues through one of its most creatively robust periods, you might be asking yourself what you need to see and what you can skip. Let's be honest, horror fans: A lot of the genre we love is garbage. But we patiently weed through the trash to find the hidden gems. What if you don't have time for the trash? What if you just want the best horror movies on Netflix? As we have with comedies and movies in general, let us guide the way.

Ted Gioia: J.S. Bach the Rebel (Lapham's Quarterly)
They never learned about Bach pulling a knife on a fellow musician during a street fight. They never heard about his drinking exploits-on one two-week trip he billed the church eighteen groschen for beer, enough to purchase eight gallons of it at retail prices-or that his contract with the Duke of Saxony included a provision for tax-free beer from the castle brewery; or that he was accused of consorting with an unknown, unmarried woman in the organ loft; or had a reputation for ignoring assigned duties without explanation or apology.

Mary Beard: The Greer Method (London Review of Books)
[Germaine] Greer is also saying that if we cannot deal with the crime of rape by the traditional legal strategies, we might have to look for a radically new approach. If one of the main factors preventing convictions is the central criterion of consent (juries cannot convict if there is the smallest doubt that the rapist might have believed that the victim consented), then maybe we ought to lower the burden of proof. But, if we do that (to the necessary disadvantage of the accused), it follows that we should lower the penalty. This is not an attempt to diminish the seriousness of the crime.

Trivia Question of the Day

Ideo Locators can often be found on maps. How are they commonly displayed?

Throwback Thursday Trivia Question from Yesterday

Two older gentlemen, Frank and Ed, sat on a front porch and related their new discoveries or projects. Frank did all the talking, and ended each commercial with the tagline, "... and thank you for your support". What product was being sold in these folksy TV commercials that ran from 1984 to 1991?

Bartles & James Wine Coolers                                                      Source

Bartles & Jaymes is a flavored wine cooler and malt beverage line produced by the E & J Gallo Winery in the United States, introduced in 1981, and available in various fruit flavors.

The product line is remembered for its folksy television commercials, created by Hal Riney, which ran from 1984 to 1991. Two older gentlemen characters, Frank Bartles and Ed Jaymes, sat on a front porch and related their new discoveries or projects on which they were working. The characters were patterned after two men who started a little winery which eventually became the Ernest & Julio Gallo Winery. Occasionally ads would be a twist on the idea of senior citizens or folksiness, such as having the pair fly an old-fashioned biplane over a beach, then airdrop crates of their product which were received by grateful young party animals. Bartles did all the talking, and ended each commercial with the tagline, "... and thank you for your support."

David Rufkahr played Frank Bartles and Dick Maugg played Ed Jaymes. Prior to their work on the ads, neither Rufkahr nor Maugg had been an actor: Rufkahr, a career Air Force veteran and cattle rancher from Redmond, Oregon, won the job in a talent search. Dick Maugg, was a Santa Rosa general contractor.        Source

   Bartles and Jaymes wine

Dave replied:
Bartles and Jaymes brand wine cooler. Two unknowns were recruited to play the fictional duo who hawked the vile brew for the Earnest & Julio Gallo company. A wine cooler is very cheap wine (swill) disguised and diluted by fruit juices and added sugar, carbonation, for a lesser % of alcohol than straight wine. Later companies found their victims/customers didn't notice the difference when even cheaper malt liquor was substituted for the cheap wine. Such products are now usually labeled as "Cooler" or in the case of Bartles & Jaymes, "Flavored Malt Cooler." As far as alcohol content, coolers are usually between 4% and 6%, which means they are a bit more potent than light beer (both are usually sold in 12 oz. containers) and a cooler has a higher sugar content. Coolers are about 200 calories per serving, which is more calories than a good quality beer like Sam Adams (4.9% ABV), and twice the calories of a typical light beer. So obviously beer is a better choice.

David of Moon Valley replied:

Was that Bartles & James? That reminds me of the Seagram's Golden Wine coolers commercials, sung by Bruce Willis. I'd run that song through my head while I swam laps. One evening I stopped mid-lap and climbed out of the pool. I couldn't stand that song anymore, and didn't have a good substitute. Oh, and I think my mom drank those Bartles & James and Seagram's wine coolers. They were too sweet for my liking.
The wind is howling, it was 91* yesterday, and there's a huge fire over in Sonoma County, in wine country, that I hope gets contained today. Man, we could use some rain right now.

Marty,

The response, every time a Republican declares that even if the president SHOOTS someone, nothing can be done, should automatically be:

OK, remember that when a Democrat is president.

To Mulvaney . . .

"Get OVER it? Are you shittin me? You guys have been whining about Hillary's emails for YEARS. GET OVER IT!"

Anecdotes

Friends

• Sam Norkin is a famous artist whose drawings of actors and plays appear in newspapers and magazines around the country. While growing up, he attended high school with a couple of friends who later became actors. One of his indulgences at work is to put the faces of his friends in one of his drawings whenever possible. Sometimes, this can be difficult. When his friend Salem Ludwig was performing a bit part in An Enemy of the People, he appeared in only one scene: a town meeting that featured the entire cast. In order to get Salem into his drawing, Mr. Norton drew the town meeting and included all the members of the cast. (He featured his friend prominently in the foreground.)

• Harold Ross liked author and cartoonist James Thurber and defended him. Once, an artist stalked into Mr. Ross' office and demanded, "Why do you reject my works and publish a fourth-rate artist like Thurber?" Mr. Ross replied, "You mean a third-rate artist."

Gays and Lesbians

• Lesbian cartoonists have an advantage over other lesbians. When Linda Sue Welch, creator of Out of the Darkness, comes out to her friends, she gives them a booklet of her cartoons to look at, and she tells them, "Here are some visual aids to help you with this."

• A gay man was stuck in traffic, so he started reading Alison Bechdel's cartoon book Spawn of Dykes to Watch Out For. Hearing a horn blowing, he looked up and saw two women in a nearby car pointing to his book and giving him a thumbs-up sign.

Gifts

• Food writer Diane Root met Pablo Picasso once due to her maternal uncle, Robert Albinelli, who fired the great artist's ceramics in the kiln and never cracked a vase or a plate. One day when she was young, her father ordered her, "Get dressed up. We are going to meet a great man." That great man, of course, was Picasso, whom she sat next to and who told her, "I'll show you how you can turn a woman into a goat, and a goat into a woman." He then demonstrated as the patrons of the restaurant silently watched from a distance. However, Ms. Root says, "This demonstration should have come with a caveat, though; every lightning-fast line Picasso drew was punctuated by the purloining of something from my plate. This staccato performance proceeded sans missing a beat: squiggle, snatch; scrawl, grab; jot, pinch; doodle, filch; draw, steal." Picasso then drew and drew on the paper, covering nearly every inch. Picasso knew that the piece of paper was valuable, and he knew that the eyes of the patrons of the restaurant - and the eyes of the waiter - were on him and the drawings. His sense of humor was impish, and after the table had been cleared, and the espresso served, he began to destroy the paper with the drawings in between sips of espresso. (His silent audience was silent no more. They groaned.) Ms. Root says that the process was "sip, slash; sip, slit; sip, scratch; sip, tear; sip, rip. The masterpiece was soon a pile of tiny pieces." However, one piece of the paper remained - the piece that had Goat-Woman on it. When young Diane left the restaurant, she had two gifts from Picasso in her pink-plastic little-girl purse: some neon bonbons and the drawing of Goat-Woman.

• Peter Paul Rubens was a diplomat as well as an artist. In early 1603, the Duke of Mantua started Mr. Rubens' diplomatic career by sending him to Spain. Because the King of Spain was a powerful figure who could cause trouble for the various regions of Italy, the rulers of these Italian regions found it wise to keep on his good side. The Duke of Mantua sent the King of Spain a gift: a team of three pairs of matched horses and a chariot equipped with springs. In addition, the Duke of Mantua sent a gift to the Duke of Lerma, who was very important in the Spanish court: a number of paintings that were reproductions of masterpieces. The paintings became wet during the journey, but Mr. Rubens used his gifts as an artist to touch them up as needed. Unfortunately, two were so damaged that they had to be thrown away, so Mr. Rubens used his artistic genius to paint as a replacement an original work of art that was much admired by the Spanish court. The Duke of Lerma was very much pleased by the gifts of the paintings, including the reproductions, although he thought that they were originals, not reproductions. Mr. Rubens, being a good diplomat, did not correct the Duke's error.

American Citizenship

Neil Young

Neil Young has come up with a canny way to disarm those who have periodically criticized the veteran Canadian singer and songwriter's most pointedly political songs or public statements about life in the USA on the grounds that "he's not even an American."

As of next month, that argument will no longer hold water.

"I've passed all the tests; I've got my appointment, and if everything goes as planned, I'll be taking the oath of citizenship" shortly after turning 74 on Nov. 12. The salient point being, "I'll be able to vote," said Young, who has lived roughly two-thirds of his life in the U.S. since arriving in Los Angeles in the mid-'60s and first making his mark on the rock 'n' roll landscape with Buffalo Springfield.

"I'm still a Canadian; there's nothing that can take that away from me," he said. Young was at a studio in Santa Monica where he and his wife, activist-actress Daryl Hannah, assembled their new film, "Mountaintop," documenting the recording of Young's latest album, "Colorado," which arrives Oct. 25.

"But I live down here; I pay taxes down here; my beautiful family is all down here - they're all Americans, so I want to register my opinion" about this country. He means doing so at the ballot box; he's often registered his opinion musically, in songs such as "Ohio," about the killing by National Guardsmen of four students at Kent State University during campus Vietnam War protests in 1970, or "Rockin' in the Free World," a 1980s commentary on the inequities of Reaganomics.

Visited By Secret Service

Eminem

When Eminem rapped about "Agent Orange" sending the Secret Service to meet him, he wasn't kidding. BuzzFeed News obtained 40 pages of documents about the government agency interviewing Eminem, real name Marshall Mathers, over "threatening lyrics" the rapper made about President Donald Trump and his family.

The Secret Service characterized Eminem, 47, as "exhibiting inappropriate behavior" and noted that he "threatens protectee" in the song "Framed," off the rapper's Revival album. The investigative documents, which are heavily redacted, cite the following lyrics: "Donald Duck's on as the Tonka Truck in the yard. But dog, how the f*** is Ivanka Trump in the trunk of my car? ... ' cause I feel somewhat responsible for the dumb little blonde Girl, that motherf***in ' baton twirler that got dumped in the pond, Second murder with no recollection of it ..."

On Revival's December 2017 release date, "a concerned citizen reported Marshall Mathers the rapper 'Eminem' had a new song called 'Framed' with an inappropriate comment towards President Donald Trump and a threatening comment towards Ivanka Trump," the documents state. The "concerned citizen" was a TMZ employee who was apparently seeking comment from the Secret Service. (TMZ founder Harvey Levin and President Trump have been close for years.)

The documents continue, "This is not the first time MATHERS made threatening comments towards POTUS and his family. In June 2017, MATHERS freestyled comments that were threatening in nature towards POTUS." The "freestyled comments" are around Eminem's rap during the BET Hip-Hop Awards that went viral in 2017. ("That's an awfully hot coffee pot Should I drop it on Donald Trump?/Prob'ly not/But that's all I got 'til I come up with a solid plot," he spewed.)

Also included as evidence of the rapper's disdain for Trump was a 2017 interview with Vulture in which Eminem said the president "makes my blood boil." The agency's Protective Intelligence and Assessment Division conducted a background check on Eminem and set up an interview about the two songs with the rapper through his attorneys, which took place on the afternoon of Jan. 16, 2018.

Launches 'Dark Web' News Site

BBC

The BBC is going to start using 'dark web' software to get round other countries' attempts to censor its programmes.

The BBC's international news website is being made available via Tor - a browser often used by people to access the dark web because it can hide who is using it and what they are looking at.

The move reportedly comes to get round efforts by countries like China, Iran and Vietnam to block people from viewing the BBC's news site or programmes.

To access the BBC news site, Tor users have to visit a different web address - bbcnewsv2vjtpsuy.onion.

The site includes foreign language services such as BBC Arabic, BBC Persian and BBC Russian but does not allow access to content only available in the UK like BBC iPlayer.

Nashville Deputy Sheriff

Johnny Cash

Nashville's sheriff says there's proof that Johnny Cash was granted law enforcement authority four decades ago. At the Johnny Cash Museum this week, Nashville Sheriff Daron Hall unveiled a blown-up image of the late musician's September 1979 deputy sheriff commission card, issued by then-Davidson County Sheriff Fate Thomas, featuring Cash's headshot, fingerprint and signature.

Hall says one of his photographers discovered the card in a box.

According to CBS affiliate WTVF, Johnny Cash's Davidson County Deputy Sheriff Commission Card states the following: "By virtue of the power vested in me as Sheriff of Davidson County under the laws of Tennessee, I have this day deputized John R. Cash a Deputy Sheriff to execute any and all processes that may come into his hands and to maintain the peace and dignity of the State, and arrest any and all persons violating the Criminal laws of the State of Tennessee."

Hall says he doesn't have evidence of what the deputy work entailed, but Cash believed in prison reform and criminal justice reform.

Still Dead

Franco

Spain exhumed the body of Francisco Franco from a grandiose state mausoleum on Thursday, reburying it in more discreet grave in a country still conflicted over the dictator's decades-long regime.

The carefully-choreographed operation which began inside an imposing basilica in the Valley of the Fallen and ended some four hours later at a state cemetery outside of Madrid, was hailed by the government as ending "an insult to Spanish democracy".

The delicate procedure drew a line under a sombre drama which had threatened to open barely-healed wounds in a nation still divided over Franco's legacy 44 years after his death.

The diminutive dictator ruled Spain with an iron fist following the end of the 1936-39 civil war and when he died in 1975, his body was laid in a tomb inside the vast basilica at Valley of the Fallen, some 50 kilometres (30 miles) northwest of Madrid.

Photos Taken Century Apart

Mont Blanc Glacier

In 1919 a pioneering aviator took iconic photos of the Mont Blanc glaciers. A century later, a team of experts has recreated the images to highlight the drastic ice melt caused by rising temperatures.

Despite an overwhelming body of scientific evidence tracking humanity's contribution to climate change, it is often difficult to grasp the enormity of a phenomenon that unfolds so gradually.

Numerous studies have been made of the vanishing glaciers surrounding Europe's tallest mountain, but the University of Dundee experts decided to go one better in an attempt to demonstrate in stark visual terms the damage wrought by global warming.

They painstakingly set about recreating three iconic images captured 100 years ago by Walter Mittelholzer, a Swiss pilot and photographer, of the Sea of Ice, Bossons and Argentiere glaciers.

Using the latest geolocation and 3D visualisation techniques, they were able to pinpoint the precise patch of sky from which Mittelholzer snapped the photos for maximum impact.

Mission To Save Honey Bees

'Rewilding'

The staggering decline of honey bee colonies has alarmed experts across the United States, but an unconventional apiculturist in California thinks he has found a way to save them.

Michael Thiele has championed an approach he calls the "rewilding" of honeybees, allowing them to live as they did for millions of years - in natural log hives high above the ground.

Thiele's method consists of hollowing out logs and strapping them high on tree trunks to mimic bees' hives before they were domesticated. He also sometimes suspends them from barn rafters or perches them high on wooden tables for a similar effect.

He's been making the log hives since 2008 and says they are sometimes colonized within days and usually within a few weeks.

Thiele does not consider himself a beekeeper in the conventional sense. He created his Apis Arborea firm (Latin for bees in trees) solely to rewild honeybees and said he does not farm the honey the bees produce unless the colony leaves the hive or dies. His hives, he said, are both a conservation project and a personal mission.

36-Year Wait

Herculaneum

One of Italy's most beautiful ancient Roman houses, which was buried under tonnes of ash when Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79, has reopened to the public 36 years after it was shuttered in disrepair.

Using innovative techniques, a team of restorers have saved the sumptuous artwork in the so-called Bicentenary House, a three-storey building in Herculaneum which, like its more famous neighbor Pompeii, was devastated by the nearby volcano.

The house was initially discovered in 1938 and was given its name because it was the 200th anniversary of excavations that had revealed the existence of the long-lost city.

A much smaller city than Pompeii, Herculaneum's ruins are more dense and better preserved because they were buried in a much deeper mass of ash, which deterred thieves. It was also a wealthier place resulting in particularly striking remains.

Bicentenary House was home to Gaius Petronius Stephanus and his wife Calantonia Themis. It was one of the city's finest private houses, with well-preserved mosaic floors and frescoes depicting mythological scenes and architectural and animal motifs.
