• F. Scott Fitzgerald had the soul of a poet. While writer Corey Ford was living in Hollywood, he stayed in an apartment that had a view he disliked and avoided. The view was of a hillside that was being bulldozed for building sites. The hillside had been bulldozed into terraces, on which were trailing vines. One night, Mr. Fitzgerald visited Mr. Ford. Mr. Fitzgerald wandered to the balcony, gazed at the moonlit scene, and said, “The hanging gardens of Babylon.” After that, Mr. Ford frequently enjoyed the view from his terrace.
• While attending Montclair State Teacher’s College in Montclair, New York, Paula Danziger met poet John Ciardi, who greatly influenced her development as a writer of books for young children and teenagers. He once had her analyze a poem by using the color red to underline the funny lines and the color blue to underline the serious lines. When she had finished analyzing the poem, the lines were underlined with red mixed with blue: purple. Ms. Danziger’s own books are a mixture of funny and serious. She says, “That’s what I always write toward — that mixture.”
• Surrealists sometimes played a game called “Exquisite Corpse.” In this game, a person will write a line of poetry on a sheet of paper, bend the paper so that the line cannot be read, then give the paper to another person who does the same thing. The two poets keep writing different lines, until they decide the poem is complete and unfold the paper to read the poem. The game’s name comes from the very first poem created by the game: “the exquisite / corpse / shall drink / the new / wine.”
• In 1992, Bill Clinton chose African-American author Maya Angelou to write and deliver a poem at his Inaugural Day ceremony. To prepare herself to write the poem, she read such works as the sermons of African-American preachers, the poems of Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, and the writings of Frederick Douglass and W.E.B. DuBois. Her being chosen to write the poem was big news, and when she traveled on airplanes, fellow passengers sometimes asked her, “Finish your poem yet?”
• When she was a 16-year-old teenager growing up in New Jersey, rocker Patti Smith craved poetry. A bus depot she knew about had a collection of used books — mostly pulp fiction. However, among the dross was a volume of poems by Rimbaud titled Illuminations. Lacking money, she stole the book — then replaced that volume with a book she owned but didn’t want. Ms. Smith says about the Rimbaud book, “I was never sorry that I nicked it.”
• Zen master Sengai was invited to a wealthy man’s housewarming. After enjoying a fine meal, Sengai was asked to compose a poem in honor of the housewarming. He quickly wrote the first half of his poem, “The house is surrounded / By the gods of poverty.” Looking over Sengai’s shoulder, the host became angry, but his mind was set at ease when Sengai finished his poem: “How can the deities of good luck / Ever leave it?”
• World-class African-American poet Countee Cullen wanted to be judged as a poet, not as an African-American poet. He stated that clearly to Brooklyn Daily Eagle reporter Margaret Sperry: “If I am going to be a poet at all, I am going to be a poet and not a Negro poet.” Ironically, the headline for this interview stated, “Countee P. Cullen, Negro Boy Poet, Tells His Story.”
• When he was a student, poet David McCord, author of One at a Time, had a teacher who told him, “Never let a day go by without looking on three beautiful things.” He has always tried to follow that advice, which he acknowledges is not difficult. Mr. McCord says, “The sky in all weathers is, for me, the first of these three things.”
Port of Spain (Spanish: Puerto España), officially the City of Port of Spain (also stylized Port-of-Spain), is the capital city of what island country?
Appearing regularly on The Lawrence Welk Show, what was the name of Peggy, Dee Dee, Janet, and Kathy's quartet?
The Lennon Sisters are an American vocal group initially made up of four sisters from a family that had six sisters in all, as well as five brothers. The original quartet consisted of: Dianne (born Dianne Barbara; aka DeeDee; December 1, 1939), Peggy (born Margaret Anne; April 8, 1941), Kathy (born Kathleen Mary; August 2, 1943), and Janet (born Janet Elizabeth; June 15, 1946). All 11 Lennon children were born in Los Angeles, California.
For thirteen years, from 1955 to 1968, the group appeared regularly on The Lawrence Welk Show, receiving union scale wages. In 1999, younger sister Mimi (born Miriam Theresa; October 16, 1955) replaced Peggy upon her retirement. Dianne has also since retired. The current line-up of the Lennon Sisters is a trio consisting of Mimi, Janet and Kathy. They continue to tour around the country and appear annually with their Christmas show at The Andy Williams Moon River Theatre in Branson, Missouri.

The Lennon Sisters. I did not know that, probably because I rarely watched Lawrence Welk Show (if rarely means ‘never’). According to Wiki a version of the Lennon Sisters (now a trio) is still touring, although the lineup has changed at various times (their family had 6 daughters as well as 5 sons). Kind of like the Osmond Brothers except they weren’t brothers. Anyway they were brought to the attention of Lawrence Welk by his son Larry, who was a high school classmate of at least one of the sisters. Their fame came with a high personal cost though. In 1969 a deranged man convinced himself that he was married to one of the sisters and shot their father dead at his place of employment because he was convinced William Lennon was keeping them apart. Apparently Peggy Lennon had never even met the lunatic.

Oh, the Lennon Sisters! They were a delight! Hell, as corny as the entire Lawrence Welk show was, it was delightful overall. I loved the Sister’s harmonies; my mom and middle sister and I often attempted to sing them ourselves. Good times!
Took off yesterday to celebrate another successful circumnavigation around the sun. A 3-mile walk with the dogs, and a bike ride long enough to equal my years in kilometers, with a little extra. Our adult children called, texted, and shared a great pun, and we topped it off with delicious Thai take out. It was a fine day and I’m grateful to still be here.

The Lennon Sisters if I remember correctly, never really cared for them. Someday we will build a new home up in the canyon by the falls, rushing water our companion, under shooting stars. That's nothing to do with the Lennon Sisters, I just like it.

“Boasting an unapologetic southern-fried twang, the twelve-track collection marks the quintet’s most pronounced dalliance with country music yet, with a clang and harmony that is unmistakably the inimitable sound and feel of the Black Lips. While the songcraft and playing is more sophisticated, Black Lips were determined to return to the raw sound roots that marked their early efforts.”

Saturday Night Live has never done five shows in consecutive weeks over its previous 45 seasons and now it is planning a sixth.
The NBC institution has added a sixth original show on November 7, the weekend after the Presidential Election.
It was a little surprising that Lorne Michaels’ show had not officially set a show for four days after Donald Trump (R-Compromised) and Joe Biden go head-to-head on November 3. But then not much about this year, or this season of SNL, is usual as they put together the show during a global pandemic.
It comes as Adele is set to host this Saturday, October 24, with H.E.R. as musical guest. Other hosts this season, its 46th, have included Issa Rae, Bill Burr and Chris Rock.
Pop superstar Elton John is getting his own Barbie doll.
The new Elton John Barbie celebrates the legendary singer-songwriter's unique look.
"The Elton John Barbie doll shines bright in a glittery top and flared denim embellished with Elton's sparkling initials," says the description on toy maker Mattel's website. "Her 'Elton'-embossed bomber jacket features star-printed sleeves and a rainbow-striped hem. Nods to the artist's iconic style include rainbow-striped platform boots, a purple bowler hat and sparkly, pink-tinted sunglasses."
According to ABC News, the Elton John Barbie has been created to mark the 45th anniversary of his legendary 1975 concerts at Dodger Stadium, when he became the first musical artist to perform at the venue since The Beatles nine years earlier.
A parody of Claude Monet’s impressionist water lilies painting by popular street artist Banksy has been sold at auction for more than £7.5m.
The piece, entitled Show Me the Monet, was auctioned for significantly more than its estimated price of between £3.5m and £5m.
Show Me the Monet recreates one of Monet’s most famous paintings, adding an abandoned shopping trolley and traffic cones into a natural scene.
The auction took place in London at Sotheby’s on Wednesday (21 October), fetching a total of £7,551,600. Five collectors vied for the artwork, in a bidding war lasting around nine minutes.
Show Me the Monet is part of a series by the enigmatic Banksy. Entitled Crude Oil, the series seeks to reimagine various canonical paintings, adding contemporarily satirical spins.
Once upon a time before the internet, telethons — marathon television fundraisers known for their endless lineup of performers and rows and rows of on-camera volunteers answering telephones to accept pledges from callers — were charity event staples. And none ran for longer than that of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), a 70-year-old nonprofit that aims “to free families from the life-threatening effects of muscular dystrophy and muscle-debilitating diseases.”
From 1966 to 2010, the MDA telethon ran in its original format — showcasing a slew of entertainers and children in wheelchairs and their parents for more than 21 hours each Labor Day weekend and famously hosted by Jerry Lewis, who would end each telethon by dramatically singing “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” But following a split between the host and the nonprofit, the event was shortened each year until, in 2015, it was canceled altogether.
Then came September 2020, when the organization announced a reboot of the event — called The MDA Kevin Hart Kids Telethon, to be hosted by the beleaguered comedian. It promises a slew of celebrity guest stars (including Common, Don Cheadle, Eva Longoria, Jack Black and Cindy Crawford), and will be streamed on YouTube on Oct. 24, falling within National Disability Employment Awareness Month.
And while word of the returning tradition may not have even registered for some, it was a painful trigger for many disability activists, who had long viewed the telethon as a “stigmatizing,” “heartless” “pity party.”
“I call it ‘pimped for profit,’” Dominick Evans, a disability-rights activist and former MDA “poster child,” tells Yahoo Life. “They use your body, your voice, your words to make money. … A lot of us feel it’s a fundraising machine.”
Fugitive US whistleblower Edward Snowden has been granted permanent residency in Russia, his lawyer said on Thursday.
Snowden, the former US intelligence contractor who revealed in 2013 that the US government was spying on its citizens, has been living in exile in Russia since the revelations.
His lawyer Anatoly Kucherena told AFP on Thursday that his residency permit was extended and is now indefinite, a situation made possible by recent changes to Russia's immigration law.
Kucherena said the application was filed in April but the process was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic.
Snowden is wanted in the United States on espionage charges after he leaked information showing that agents from the National Security Agency (NSA) were collecting telephone records of millions of US citizens.
Donald Trump Jr (R-Professional Prevaricator) has been mocked for claiming that he worked his way up in the Trump Organisation.
Mr Trump Jr, 42, made the claims on Thursday, while attempting to criticise Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden.
“My father gave me an opportunity to work my way up in his company. Joe gave his son China,” the president’s eldest child wrote on Twitter.
Social media users were confused about Mr Trump Jr’s claims, as he has worked for the Trump Organisation for nearly two decades and currently serves as their executive vice president.
Journalist Jennifer Hayden tweeted: “The most hilarious tweet I've ever read on this site. He really worked his way up the ladder after college, from VP to Executive VP. This guy gets it.”
Archaeologists in Peru have found the naturally mummified remains of five llamas that were sacrificed to the Incan gods about 500 years ago.
The mummified llamas are still adorned with the colorful strings, red paint and feathers that the Inca decorated them with before sending them to their deaths, likely by burying these animals alive.
The finding is so rare, that even though archaeologists have been excavating the remains of the Inca Empire (also spelled Inka) along the Pacific Coast of South America for more than a century, "none of them have found anything like this," study lead researcher Lidio Valdez, an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology at the University of Calgary in Canada, told Live Science.
Valdez and his colleagues found the mummified llamas (Lama glama) at Tambo Viejo, an archaeological site on the Pacific coast of Peru, in 2018. The archaeologists discovered the llama mummies buried beneath clay floors in two of the several buildings that surround the two plazas at the site. Four llamas — one brown and three white — were buried together in one building, and a single brown llama was found beneath the floor in the other building, Valdez said.
The young llamas were richly decorated; long string tassels dyed red, yellow, green and purple were attached to the llamas' ears. These strings, made of camelid fiber, were "attached to the ears just for the occasion," Valdez said. The camels also wore necklaces of colored strings around their necks.
Learning no lessons from horror films of yore, Britain has plans for a high-speed rail project that will lay tracks over the ruins of a medieval church. And, apparently, the project has run into some trouble with witches and dark spirits.
According to archaeologists working at Stoke Mandeville, a village that lies in the path of the proposed railway, an early excavation of the site's 700-year-old church revealed stone beams etched with strange circular patterns known as "witch marks."
These markings, which look like the spokes of a wheel with a hole drilled into the center, were created to "ward off evil spirits by entrapping them in an endless line or maze," project officials wrote in a statement.
The church in question, named St. Mary's, was erected around 1070 as a private chapel for the lord of Stoke Mandeville in what is now Buckinghamshire, England, according to the statement. The church building was expanded in the 1340s to accommodate local villagers, then ultimately demolished in the 1860s when a new church popped up closer to town.
Similar witch markings have turned up at medieval sites across the U.K., including a set discovered last year at Creswell Crags, a limestone gorge and cave complex that has been inhabited on and off since the last ice age. The markings are typically etched into stones near doorways, windows and fireplaces, to keep spirits away.
