Tom Danehy: "Tom reflects on the government shutdown. Spoiler: He's not a Ted Cruz fan" (Tucson Weekly)
There should be a special place in Pandering-To-The-Camera Hell for Rep. Randy Neugebauer, R-Texas. Two days after he and other House Republicans cast votes that in effect shut down the government (including the National Park Service), he publicly chastised a Park Service employee for doing her job, which, on that day, meant keeping people out of a national memorial that was closed because of Neugebauer and his buddies.
Both Muhammad Ali and James Brown acknowledged that their own approach to flamboyant self-promotion was influenced by George Raymond Wagner. By what name is Mr. Wagner better known?
Spiro Theodore Agnew (November 9, 1918 - September 17, 1996) was an Americanpolitician who served as the 39th Vice President of the United States from 1969 to 1973, serving underPresident Richard Nixon.
During his fifth year as Vice President, late in the summer of 1973, Agnew was investigated by the United States Attorney's office for the District of Maryland, on charges of extortion, tax fraud, bribery, andconspiracy. In October, he was charged with having accepted bribes totaling more than $100,000 while holding office as Baltimore County Executive, Governor of Maryland, and Vice President of the United States. On October 10, 1973, Agnew was allowed to plead no contest to a single charge that he had failed to report $29,500 of income received in 1967, with the condition that he resign the office of Vice President. Nixon replaced him by appointing then House Minority Leader Gerald Ford to the office of Vice President.
Agnew was the only second Vice President in United States history to resign, the other being John C. Calhoun, and the only one to do so because of criminal charges.

Oh, the pain. Normally it is so much fun answering your
wonderful trivia questions, but this one just sickens
me...thinking of Spiro T. Agnew makes me want to puke. "If
the President does it, it isn't illegal" said Nixon. Same
apparently for the Vice-President, who got out of going to
jail where he belonged, along with the rest of our "leaders"
for the last forty years. Criminally insane monsters all
(possible exception of Jimmy Carter, but who can be sure).
Tried to find a funny picture, but, dear god, it just isn't
funny anymore. He did have a gift for alliteration, but that
should not save him from eternal damnination. May The

Only one US Vice President has resigned because of criminal charges. Who was it?
That would be Spiro Agnew, VP of Richard Nixon.
There was a campaign biography of him with this unintentionally funny (in retrospect) title: Spiro Agnew: His Life and Convictions.
To be truly accurate, it would be his life and No Contest.

Celebrated Canadian short-story writer Alice Munro, who announced her retirement earlier this year, has won the prestigious Nobel Prize in Literature, becoming the first Canadian-based writer to earn the honour.
Munro, 82, is the 13th woman to win the prize. She told the Globe and Mail recently that she intended on retiring after the publication of Dark Life, her 14th story collection. She won a Trillium Book Award for the piece in June.
Munro told the Canadian Press that it was "quite wonderful" to receive the award. "I knew I was in the running, yes, but I never thought I would win," she told the news agency. Typical Canadian humility.
Munro was born in 1931 in Wingham, Ont., to a mother who was a teacher and a father who was a fox farmer. She studied journalism briefly, before getting married and moving to Victoria, where she and her husband opened a book store.

Four former U.S. government officials who met with former National Security Agency systems analyst Edward Snowden said Thursday that he is adjusting to life in Russia and expresses no regrets about leaking highly classified information. Separately, Snowden's father arrived to see his son.
The Americans, who once worked for the CIA, FBI, Justice Department and NSA, have criticized the U.S. government and exposed what they believed was wrongdoing in the security agencies. All supporters of Snowden, they are the first Americans known to have met with him since he was granted asylum in Russia in August.
Like Snowden, Thomas Drake was indicted under the Espionage Act, but the felony charges were dropped before trial and he was found guilty in 2011 on a lesser charge and sentenced to one year of probation and community service.
Drake and the other Americans - Raymond McGovern, Jesselyn Radack and Coleen Rowley - said Snowden was in good spirits and still believes he did the right thing in disclosing the NSA surveillance program.
All but McGovern are past recipients of the Sam Adams Award, named for a CIA analyst during the Vietnam War who accused the U.S. military of underestimating the strength of the enemy for political purposes. The award is given annually by the Sam Adams Associates for Integrity in Intelligence.

New Zealand on Thursday moved to correct a clerical oversight lasting 200 years that meant its two main islands were never officially named.
Universally known as the North and South Islands, the landmasses had never been formally recognised despite appearing on maps since European settlement began in the early 1800s, the New Zealand Geographic Board said.
After discovering the error in 2009, the board began a long public consultation process looking at how to rectify the mistake, resulting in an announcement from Land Information Minister Maurice Williamson on Thursday.
Williamson also approved alternative Maori names for the islands: Te Waipounamu -- meaning rivers of green stone -- for the South Island and Te Ika-a-Maui -- the fish of Maui (a Maori god) -- for the North.
A Southern California plastic surgeon said on Wednesday he is behind the auction of a physician's notes that shows actress Marilyn Monroe had undergone cosmetic surgery, and he will donate the proceeds to assist U.S. veterans with medical work.
Norman Leaf, who had previously requested anonymity, told Reuters that interest in the auction of the notes along with a set of X-rays caused him to come forward.
The set of six X-rays and the file of doctors' notes offer a partial medical history of the Hollywood sex symbol from 1950 to 1962 and are expected to fetch between $15,000 and $30,000.
Leaf, who began a medical partnership in Beverly Hills with plastic surgeon Michael Gurdin in 1975, said he did not know he was in possession of the files until about 20 years ago, when he was made aware of Gurdin's old charts that were hidden away storage.
Proceeds from the sale will be donated to nonprofit foundation Rebuilding America's Warriors, which helps U.S. veterans receive free reconstructive surgery on injuries that are not covered by government benefits, said Leaf, who is the foundation's medical director.

Comic actor Craig Robinson was detained Wednesday for drug possession as he tried to leave the Bahamas and was ordered to pay a fine, authorities said.
The actor best known for his role as Darryl Philbin on NBC's "The Office" was stopped as he tried to board a plane in the capital, Nassau, and head back to the United States. Customs agents found a small amount of marijuana and pills deemed suspicious, said Supt.Stephen Dean of the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
"It was nothing major," Dean said.
Robinson, who was in the Bahamas for a comedy show, was taken into custody and appeared before a magistrate, where he pleaded guilty to two counts of drug possession.Prosecutor Ercel Dorsett told the court that Robinson had a half gram of marijuana and 18 ecstasy pills.
The 41-year-old actor, who appeared calm in a shorts and T-shirt and was not accompanied by a lawyer, told the court he brought the drugs from the United States and did not know they were illegal in the Bahamas.

California's Democratic governor signed a law on Wednesday that will allow nurses and midwives to perform some abortions, a move aimed at increasing access to the procedure even as other states are tightening the rules.
Under the law, the most populous U.S. state would allow nurse-practitioners, nurse-midwives and physician assistants to perform a procedure known as aspiration, which uses suction to dislodge an embryo from the uterine wall during the first few weeks of pregnancy.
Four other states - Oregon, Montana, Vermont and New Hampshire - already allow non-physicians to perform early stage abortions, but California is the first to codify the practice into law.
"Timely access to reproductive health services is critical to women's health," the bill's author, California state Assemblywoman Toni Atkins said in a statement after Governor Jerry Brown announced the signing of the law.
The intent of the law, said Atkins' spokeswoman, Dale Kelly Bankhead, is to expand access to abortion in areas of the state where there are no providers.

Russian investigators said Wednesday several of the 30 Greenpeace activists already charged with piracy over an open-sea protest were set to face new charges for "other grave crimes" after finding drugs on their ship.
The environmental group vehemently denied the charge that their vessel, the Arctic Sunrise, had carried illegal drugs, calling the allegation a "smear."
The Investigative Committee said the authorities had found "narcotic substances" on the Dutch-flagged Arctic Sunrise detained by Russia after 30 Greenpeace activists from 18 countries staged a protest against Arctic oil drilling last month.
Russian security services seized control of the icebreaker and towed it into Murmansk nearly 2,000 kilometres (1,243 miles) north of Moscow and above the Arctic Circle.
"Any claim that something other than medical supplies was found should be regarded with great suspicion," Greenpeace said, adding the ship was searched with a sniffer dog in Norway.

Russian lawmakers will in February debate a bill that could see homosexual couples lose custody of their children, parliamentary documents showed Wednesday.
The debate will likely coincide with the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi which have already been marred by boycott calls over Russia's controversial new anti-gay legislation.
The bill, published on the website of Russia's Duma lower house of parliament, says the state can strip parents of custody if they practise "non-traditional sexual relations," the term used in Russian laws to describe homosexual relations.
Russia's homosexual community has feared such a measure ever since President Vladimir Putin in June signed a "gay propaganda" law which sparked international condemnation.

Inside the exhibit's 14 video installations are equally unabashed in their attack on psychiatrists. The group claims the practice is abusive and its therapies cause millions of deaths.
