Theodore Dalrymple: False Apology Syndrome - I'm sorry for your sins (incharacter.org)
There is a fashion these days for apologies: not apologies for the things that one has actually done oneself (that kind of apology is as difficult to make and as unfashionable as ever), but for public apologies by politicians for the crimes and misdemeanours of their ancestors, or at least of their predecessors. I think it is reasonable to call this pattern of political breast-beating the False Apology Syndrome.

The lyric, "Eight years ago we won the prize, but then were robbed by tricks and lies, of freedom's foes in friends' disguise, Democrats, good Democrats!" comes from the Grover Cleveland vs James G. Blaine presidential campaign.

"Tippecanoe and Tyler too", originally published as "Tip and Ty", was a very popular and influential campaign song in the 1840 United States presidential election. Its lyrics sung the praises of Whig candidates William Henry Harrison (the "hero of Tippecanoe") and John Tyler, while denigrating incumbent Democrat Martin Van Buren.

Irving Berlin wrote the song, "I like Ike" for Republican nominee Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Although Irving Berlin was the answer I was looking for, Sally answered Al Sherman, so I visited my good friend
Google, and found this reference in a Wikipedia article on the Disney movie,
The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, with music by
Richard M. Sherman and his brother
Robert B. Sherman:
The songwriters' father, Al Sherman (who was also a songwriter) wrote two songs which were used as campaign songs for two different Presidential candidates in the mid-twentieth century. In the 1948 election, Republican candidate,
Thomas Dewey usurped the Al Sherman/Charles Tobias/Howard Johnson collaboration, "(What Do We Do On A) Dew-Dew-Dewey Day" for his campaign. Four years later Sherman wrote a song specifically for Dwight D. Eisenhower's campaign called, "I Like Ike".
And on that note, Sally is declared the final winner.
Alan J was first, but missed 2:
1. Sam Moore, Soul Man, Bob Dole
2. 1876 Hayes v. Tilden
3. Tippecanoe and Tyler, too
4. Al Jolson
5. Irving Berlin
vb nearly nailed it but has the wrong year for Grover Cleveland's election, and since Cleveland ran 3 times (and won twice), the year or opposing candidate mattered:
#1 What soul legend has asked Barack Obama to stop using a song he wrote? Name the legend, the song, and which presidential candidate he re-wrote a song for.
Sam Moore of Sam and Dave. The song is Hold On, I'm Coming. He re-wrote Soul Man for the Bob Dole campaign.
#2 The lyric, "Eight years ago we won the prize, but then were robbed by tricks and lies, of freedom's foes in friends' disguise, Democrats, good Democrats!" comes from which presidential campaign?
Grover Cleveland's campaign - 1846
#3 What campaign song was originally published as "Tip and Ty"? "Tippecanoe and Tyler too"
#4 The campaign song "Harding, You're the man for us" written by whom? Al Jolson
#5 Who wrote the campaign song 'I Like Ike'? Irving Berlin
Jim from CA skipped the first question:
1.
2. Grover Cleveland and Benjamin Harrison
3. Tippecanoe and Tyler too
4. Warren G. Harding
5. Irving Berlin
Charlie who isn't playing nailed it:
What soul legend has asked Barack Obama to stop using a song he wrote? Name the legend, the song, and which presidential candidate he re-wrote a song for.
Sam Moore, of Sam & Dave, has asked the Obama campaign to quit using "Hold On, I'm Comin'," (which was written by the late Isaac Hayes and David Porter). Moore rewrote "Soul Man" as "I'm a Dole Man" for Bob Dole. Moore hasn't come out for McCain yet, I don't think.
The lyric, "Eight years ago we won the prize, but then were robbed by tricks and lies, of freedom's foes in friends' disguise, Democrats, good Democrats!" comes from which presidential campaign?
Grover Cleveland's (1884)
What campaign song was originally published as "Tip and Ty"?

Sally got 'em all:
My (almost) nine year old g/son (Jonathan) is helping me research today's set of contest questions, from BOOKS. I hope this is okay. It is SUCH a great learning experience for him, and has led to some great discussion as well.

If there's one rule in election-year politics, it's this: Don't mess with the science crowd. OK, labor unions and the NRA matter too, but John McCain may want to brush up on his stars and planets after Tuesday night's debate.
In the debate, McCain portrayed Barack Obama as an excessive spender, and he punctuated his attack (twice) with this example:
"[Obama] voted for nearly a billion dollars in pork barrel earmark projects, including, by the way, $3 million for an overhead projector at a planetarium in Chicago, Illinois. My friends, do we need to spend that kind of money?"
Turns out, a lot of people think we do. This is no ordinary overhead projector from your 5th grade classroom. The blog Cosmic Variance sums it up:
"If you've ever had the pleasure of visiting the Adler Planetarium, you'd probably guess that the 'overhead projector' he's talking about is the spectacular 'Sky Theater' -- one of the most engrossing, gorgeous venues for displaying visuals about space."
When Barack Obama's campaign bus made a swing through Missouri in July, the unlikeliest of supporters were waiting for him -- or rather two of them, holding the banner: "Rednecks for Obama."
In backing the first African-American nominee of a major party for the US presidency, the pair are on a grassroots mission to bridge a cultural gap in the United States and help usher their preferred candidate into the White House.
Tony Viessman, 74, and Les Spencer, 60, got politically active last year when it occurred to them there must be other lower income, rural, beer-drinking, gun-loving, NASCAR race enthusiasts fed up with business as usual in Washington.

Canadian singer and songwriter Rufus Wainwright has been asked to compose his first opera.
Wainwright will arrange the song Prima Donna and it will be premiered at the Manchester International Festival in 2009.
Wainwright said he was inspired by one of the most renowned opera stars, Maria Callas: "The opera is not about her, but it is about the persona of an opera star; it is the day in the life of an opera singer."
He added: "Opera is one of the last bastions where you can investigate big emotions and romanticism..."
In a sign of the times, the National Debt Clock in New York City has run out of digits to record the growing figure.
As a short-term fix, the digital dollar sign on the billboard-style clock near Times Square has been switched to a figure - the "1" in $10 trillion. It's marking the federal government's current debt at about $10.2 trillion.
The Durst Organization says it plans to update the sign next year by adding two digits. That will make it capable of tracking debt up to a quadrillion dollars.
The late Manhattan real estate developer Seymour Durst put the sign up in 1989 to call attention to what was then a $2.7 trillion debt.
Tin Pan Alley, the home of George Gershwin, Irving Berlin and other great American songwriters, is up for sale.
Five buildings on West 28th Street in Manhattan's Chelsea district are being offered as a group for $44 million. A listing on real estate Web site Loopnet recommends that the buildings be torn down and a high-rise take their place.
Says Historic Districts Council Executive Director Simeon Bankoff: "These buildings are incredibly significant to the development of New York City. They helped launch the careers of songwriters and musicians who are still popular today."
Tin Pan Alley housed a concentration of music publishers and songwriters from the 1890s to the 1950s.

The Tate Britain museum has purchased a rare sketch by Peter Paul Rubens to keep it from being sold abroad, the museum said.
The Tate, with help from several art and heritage foundations, paid $9.9 million for the sketched version of Rubens' larger painting "The Apotheosis of James I" - which depicts King James I being carried to heaven. The completed artwork was painted onto the ceiling of Banqueting House at Whitehall, the 17th-century London residence of the monarch.
"The Banqueting House ceiling is the most important painting set within an architectural context in England, and this sketch is the key to its composition," said David Starkey, a former history professor at the London School of Economics who now works as a broadcaster and writer. "The loss of the sketch would have been a fundamental betrayal of our national heritage."
The sketch had been in the family of late Anthony David Brand for two centuries. When he died in January, the family offered the museum the chance to buy the sketch at a discount for tax purposes.
The Dalai Lama will undergo surgery to remove a gallstone, a spokesman for the Tibetan spiritual leader said Friday.
The Dalai Lama was hospitalized in New Delhi early Friday, days after a medical checkup cleared him to resume foreign travel. His spokesman, Chhime R. Chhoekyapa, declined to provide further details, including when the surgery would take place, saying only "a gallstone will be removed."
The Dalai Lama arrived in the Indian capital Monday from Dharmsala, the north Indian hill town where he set up his government in exile after fleeing Tibet in 1959 following a failed uprising against Chinese rule. He was originally scheduled to be back in Dharmsala on Thursday.
A U.S. federal judge temporarily halted sales of RealNetworks Inc's RealDVD software, which allows users to copy DVDs, after Hollywood studios sued the company over copyright issues, court documents showed.
Judge Marilyn Hall Patel of the Northern District of California on Tuesday extended a temporary restraining order issued last week after the company and studios went to court.
RealDVD, a software product from RealNetworks subsidiary RealNetworks Home Entertainment Inc, allows users to create a copy of a DVD for their computer's internal or portable hard drive.
The Motion Picture Association of America, which represents Hollywood's major film and TV studios, says the software illegally bypasses copy-protection measures intended to prevent duplication of DVDs.

A woman who admitted fabricating a best-selling memoir about surviving the Holocaust by living with wolves cannot be sued by her former publisher because the lawsuit was filed too late, a Massachusetts judge ruled.
Middlesex Superior Court Judge Timothy Feeley on Tuesday dismissed the lawsuit filed by publisher Jane Daniel, saying she had missed a one-year statute of limitations.
Daniel sued Misha Defonseca, author of the 1997 book "Misha: A Memoire of the Holocaust Years," and her ghostwriter Vera Lee to overturn a $32.4 million court judgment they had won against her in an earlier fight over profits. Daniel argued that because the story was false, Defonseca "perpetrated a hoax" on the trial judge and the jury.
Feeley wrote in his ruling that the authenticity of the memoir was not an issue in the earlier court battle between Defonseca and Daniel.
A judge has ordered the 23-year-old son of actor Ryan O'Neal back to rehab weeks after he and his father were arrested on suspicion of drug possession.
Redmond O'Neal appeared in a Malibu courtroom Wednesday on a probation violation for a previous drug conviction.
Judge Scott Millington ordered O'Neal into a two-week detox program after he admitted he had relapsed, court records show.
He was sentenced to three years' probation in June after pleading guilty to heroin and methamphetamine possession.
A defendant had a hard time facing the music. Andrew Vactor was facing a $150 fine for playing rap music too loudly on his car stereo in July. But a judge offered to reduce that to $35 if Vactor spent 20 hours listening to classical music by the likes of Bach, Beethoven and Chopin.
Vactor, 24, lasted only about 15 minutes, a probation officer said.
It wasn't the music, Vactor said, he just needed to be at practice with the rest of the Urbana University basketball team.
Champaign County Municipal Court Judge Susan Fornof-Lippencott says the idea was to force Vactor to listen to something he might not prefer, just as other people had no choice but to listen to his loud rap music.
With the financial meltdown leaving many Americans wondering what a dollar is worth, one New York City artist has an answer - zero.
Painter and printmaker Laura Gilbert is passing out signed and numbered prints of the "Zero Dollar," which looks like a dollar bill except it has zeros in place of ones.
Gilbert distributed 10,000 of the fake greenbacks in front of the New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday to call attention to the economic crisis gripping the nation. She says the artwork is meant to be a statement about "the destructive role of many financial institutions, inflation, and the decline of U.S. currency to the point of seeming worthlessness."

Lloyd Thaxton, the host of a popular Los Angeles TV dance show in the 1960s who memorably injected a visual zaniness into his daily rock 'n' roll party for teenagers, died Sunday. He was 81.
Thaxton, who later became the Emmy Award-winning producer and director of TV's long-running consumer advocacy program "Fight Back! With David Horowitz," died of multiple myeloma at his home in Studio City, said his wife, Barbara. He had been diagnosed with the disease in May.
A television personality from Toledo, Ohio, who arrived in Hollywood in 1957, Thaxton launched "Lloyd Thaxton's Record Shop" on KCOP-TV Channel 13 in 1959. The show featured records, guest stars and Thaxton's flair for humor.
Revamped and renamed "Thaxton's Hop" in 1962, the live, low-budget, late-afternoon program became such a hit with young Southern Californians that it was syndicated nationally in 1964.
Like "American Bandstand," Dick Clark's popular TV dance show out of Philadelphia that went national in 1957 on ABC-TV, what came to be called "The Lloyd Thaxton Show" featured teenagers dancing to records and guest appearances by top recording artists such as the Byrds, Jan and Dean, the Righteous Brothers, Sonny and Cher, and the Turtles.
Thaxton, who produced his dance program, would sign off by saying, "The name of the show is 'The Lloyd Thaxton Show,' and my name is Lloyd Thaxton."
To which the teen dancers in the studio would shout, "SO WHAT!"
During his peak as a TV dance show host in 1965, Thaxton's face appeared at the top of the newly launched Tiger Beat magazine (then known as "Lloyd Thaxton's Tiger Beat") for which he did a column.
The son of a newspaperman, Thaxton was born May 31, 1927, in Memphis. He grew up in Toledo and enlisted in the Navy after graduating from high school near the end of World War II.
Thaxton used the GI Bill to attend Northwestern University, where he graduated in 1950 with a degree in speech. He also participated in the university's radio, television and theater offerings. Thaxton launched his career in television in 1950 as a staff announcer at WSPD-TV in Toledo and soon was the host of "Leave It to Lloyd," a live afternoon show featuring guests, music and comedy.
Thaxton later was the host of the 1967 ABC game show "Everybody's Talking," "Showcase '68" (an NBC summer series spotlighting young entertainers) and the 1968-69 ABC game show "Funny You Should Ask." He also was a director on the 1990-94 ABC series "America's Funniest People," among other credits.
From 1976 to 1992, Thaxton produced and directed what became known as "Fight Back! With David Horowitz," for which he won five Emmys. Thaxton appeared on-camera as Dr. Freon and Dirty Moore in challenges of product claims, and he and Horowitz also did consumer segments for the "Today" show.
In addition to his second wife, Barbara, to whom he was married 39 years, Thaxton is survived by a daughter from his first marriage, country singer Jennifer Weatherly Wainwright; two stepsons from his first marriage, Lee and Robin Thaxton; and a grandson.
