Expressing and receiving kindness makes us feel good and even the smallest acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference in someone's life. The following 20 anecdotes are a selection of the ones we found most inspiring about some of the world's greatest musicians. During the long and winding road to success even they had to endure some great struggles along the way.
Andrew Tobias: "Eat Less Beef: Visit Greenland"
Not only is a lot of animal fat probably not great for your health, cow burps are melting the Greenland Ice Sheet - to the tune of a trillion tons in the last decade. If you live anywhere near a coast line, or hope to visit New Orleans or Venice someday - or New York or Amsterdam or Tokyo or Mumbai or Shanghai - take three minutes for each of those links?
Franklin Veaux: Does Pornography Harm Sexual Libido? (Slate)
Porn is not education. Watching porn to try to figure out how to run your sex life is like watching James Bond movies to try to figure out how to be a spy-it's stupid. We know that when it comes to James Bond movies, but people screw that up about porn because we don't talk about sex in healthy ways. But that's not porn's fault. If people are looking to porn for their sex ed, something has come off the rails ... and that's not porn's fault.

Nancy is an American daily and Sunday comic strip, originally written and drawn by Ernie Bushmiller and distributed by United Feature Syndicate. The character of Nancy, a slightly chubby and precocious eight-year-old, first appeared in the strip Fritzi Ritz about the airheaded flapper title character. Larry Whittington began Fritzi Ritz in 1922, and it was taken over by Bushmiller three years later.
On January 2, 1933, Bushmiller introduced Fritzi's niece, Nancy. Soon she dominated the daily strip, which was retitled Nancy in 1938.
Sluggo Smith, Nancy's best friend, introduced in 1938. Sluggo is Nancy's age and is a poor ragamuffin-type from the wrong side of the tracks. He is sometimes described as Nancy's boyfriend. He is portrayed as lazy, and his favorite pastime seems to be napping. He lives at 720 Drabb Street in an abandoned house he found and is taken care of by truck driver "uncles" Les and More, who discovered that he had lived in an orphanage; his mother died after he was born, and his father died serving his country. Sluggo's Uncle Vince is "shady" and his rich Aunt Maggie in California doesn't care about him because he reminds her of when she was poor. Sluggo ran away from the orphanage, and his cousin Chauncey gave him $200 and he took the train as far as Three Rocks.
Bushmiller won the National Cartoonists Society's Humor Comic Strip Award for 1961 and the Society's Reuben Award for Best Cartoonist of the Year in 1976.
In 1995, the strip was selected as one of the 20 in the "Comic Strip Classics" series of commemorative U.S. postage stamps.

That's Nancy and Sluggo. I delighted in reading that comic; Nancy had such weird hair and she & Sluggo had some innocent, fun adventures.
That I identified them right away makes me wistful for those kinds of comics; Dondi, Dennis the Menace (what's he up to these days? Video games?), Gordo…ah, yes, when newspapers were really how one got the news, and not just chasing the Internet.

That picture of Nancy and Sluggo sharing an ice cream reminded me of a joke:
A vacationing penguin is driving his car through Arizona when he notices that the oil pressure light is on. He gets out to look and sees oil dripping out of the motor. He drives to the nearest town and stops at the first gas station.
After dropping the car off, the penguin goes for a walk around town. He sees an ice-cream shop and, being a penguin in Arizona, decides that something cold would really hit the spot. He gets a big dish of ice cream and sits down to eat. Having no hands he makes a real mess trying to eat with his flippers. After finishing his ice cream, he goes back to the gas station and asks the mechanic if he's found the problem. The mechanic looks up and says "It looks like you blew a seal."
"No no," the penguin replies, "it's just ice cream."
As the great Tom Lehrer once sang, "when correctly viewed, EVERYTHING is lewd!", and as I look back on the cultural stew of our past, it seems to me that there was a LOT of repressed filth hidden in plain sight for the amusement of those with the "right kind of eyes".

Why, that's Nancy and Sluggo, from the oddly beloved strip Nancy. MANY underground cartoonists like Bill Griffith LOVE the old version of the strip for some reason. I never quite understood why.

They are Nancy and Sluggo. When I was a kid Sluggo was my hero. He evidently lived in a house with no adults present. He wore patched clothing, used crates for furniture, had cracked plaster walls in his house. The kid was to be envied. I made my little "Sluggo house" under then porch. It was my special place, I had crates to sit on and it was too cramped for grown-ups. Of course my sister Judy could get to it but I painted "No Grils Aloud" on the back wall to keep her away. I'm sure that worked. So that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

The private meeting Pope Francis held with defiant Kentucky clerk Kim Davis is a strong papal endorsement of religious resistance to gay marriage, but it doesn't necessarily mean he approves of how she's waged her fight, experts said Wednesday.
The Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, said their encounter in Washington last Thursday was private. Out of deference to the Vatican, Davis' attorney, Mat Staver, would not say how it was arranged. The Vatican essentially confirmed it, without further comment.
Davis said she grasped the pope's outstretched hand, and he told her to "stay strong."
"Just knowing that the pope is on track with what we're doing and agreeing, you know, it kind of validates everything," Davis told ABC News.

A New York auction of American coins from 1792 to the 1830s fetched $26 million on Wednesday.
The 105-coin sale was the second of five auctions of federal coinage from the D. Brent Pogue Collection.
Among the stars of the sale was a 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar, known as the Lord Saint Oswald specimen. It sold for nearly $5 million, in line with its high presale estimate.
Another highlight was a 1795 Capped Bust Right Eagle, also known as the Garrett Eagle. It was worth $10 when it was minted and sold Wednesday for $2.5 million. It is considered the single finest surviving U.S. gold coin struck in the 18th century.
Its pre-sale estimate was $750,000 to $1.2 million. The old record was $2.35 million for a quarter eagle worth $2.50 when it was struck in 1808. It sold at the first Pogue collection auction in May.
Donna Shalala, the president of the Clinton Foundation, suffered a stroke on Tuesday evening after an annual meeting in New York, former U.S. President Bill Clinton said in a statement.
Shalala, 74, a former U.S. secretary of health and human services who served in Clinton's administration during the 1990s, was named president and chief executive officer of the foundation in March.
"As some of you may have heard, Donna suffered a stroke this evening," Clinton and his daughter Chelsea, who serves as vice chair of the organization, said in a joint statement on Tuesday, noting that the stroke occurred after the annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative held in New York.
"Fortunately, she was with colleagues at the time and taken to the hospital for treatment," the statement said. "Initial reports are very encouraging."

The Titanic's last lunch menu, saved by a first-class passenger who climbed aboard a lifeboat whose crew was said to have been bribed to row away instead of rescue more people, sold at auction for $88,000 on Wednesday.
The online New York auctioneer Lion Heart Autographs offered the menu and two other previously unknown artifacts from Lifeboat 1.
Abraham Lincoln Salomon was among a handful of first-class passengers who boarded the lifeboat, dubbed the Money Boat or Millionaire's Boat by the press because of unfounded rumors one of them bribed seven crew members to quickly row the boat away from the sinking ocean liner.
Salomon also took away a printed ticket from the Titanic's opulent Turkish baths, which recorded a person's weight when seated in a specially designed upholstered lounge chair. The ticket bears the names of three of the five other first-class passengers with him on Lifeboat 1. One of four weighing chair tickets known to exist, it sold for $11,000.
Police say an actor known for his role in the television series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" has been arrested in upstate New York after a fight with a girlfriend.
Saratoga Springs police Lt. Bob Jillson says Nicholas Brendon faces charges of robbery, obstruction of breathing and criminal mischief. Brendon played Xander Harris in the show.
Police say the girlfriend told officers called to a downtown hotel Wednesday night she had gone to return property to Brendon and intended to leave. They say Brendon objected, took her car keys and cellphone and started choking her.
Brendon was arrested nearby. He was released from jail Thursday after posting bond. It's unclear if he has a lawyer. He hasn't commented on his Facebook page.

Los Angeles prosecutors are reviewing an investigation into a model's accusations that Bill Cosby sexually abused her at the Playboy Mansion.
District attorney's spokeswoman Jane Robison says police detectives presented evidence for a possible criminal case Wednesday afternoon.
There's no timetable for when a decision will be made on whether to charge the comedian, and it is unclear what charges could be filed.
Model Chloe Goins accused Cosby of drugging her and accosting her in a bedroom of the Playboy Mansion in August 2008, but the comedian's lawyer has denied the claims, saying his client wasn't in Los Angeles at the time.
New satellite images show China may be building its first indigenous aircraft carrier in the northeastern port of Dalian, according to IHS Jane's Defense Weekly, which has released the pictures.
Little is known about China's aircraft carrier program, which is a state secret, though Chinese state media have hinted new vessels are being built. The Pentagon, in a report earlier this year, said Beijing could build multiple aircraft carriers over the next 15 years.
Taiwan's Defense Ministry, in a report obtained by Reuters last month, said China was building two aircraft carriers that will be the same size as its sole carrier, a 60,000-tonne refurbished Soviet-era ship.
IHS Jane's said the unidentified hull was in an advanced state of construction at a shipyard in Dalian.
The dry dock is "associated" with the refit and repair of China's existing carrier, the Liaoning, IHS Jane's said.

Wolfsburg is the town that Volkswagen built - literally put on the map in 1938 by the Nazis in pursuit of their dream of a "People's Car."
The town rode the company's postwar boom to financial wealth and today the two are inseparable. There's a top league soccer club that wears the VW logo and plays in the Volkswagen arena; Volkswagen's headquarters and manufacturing plant take up much of its real estate. There's a Volkswagen bank, a Volkswagen real estate dealer, and even a Volkswagen sausage factory.
So when it was revealed this month that the automaker had cheated on U.S. emissions tests, causing its shares to plummet, the mood here darkened.
Nobody knows quite what to expect, but nobody thinks the coming months are going to be easy as the world's top-selling car manufacturer struggles to deal with myriad legal and technical problems while trying to restore its image. The city is already freezing spending and hiring.
A Georgia license plate featuring the Confederate battle flag was on sale again on Wednesday after the state ended a temporary hold on the specialty plates in response to the June massacre of nine black churchgoers in South Carolina.
Governor Nathan Deal halted sales of the plate amid national debate about the controversial flag used by the pro-slavery South during the U.S. Civil War.
A redesigned plate is now being offered with a small image of the Confederate battle flag in the foreground. It no longer features a larger background flag as on the previous version, said William Gaston, a spokesman for Georgia's Department of Revenue.
The changes reflect an agreement the state reached with the Georgia chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, which sponsors the specialty plate, Gaston said.
Just over half of the white residents surveyed this month supported the flag's removal, compared to 93 percent of the black residents polled.
