Anecdotes

Practical Jokes

• David F. Day was the editor of a Democratic paper in Colorado in the late 1800s and supported the silver standard. Once, he was visited by Francis E. Leupp, a journalist who was a Republican and who supported the gold standard. In addition to being a newspaper editor, Mr. Day was also busy as the Indian Agent for the Southern Ute Indians. Because he was so busy, Mr. Day allowed Mr. Leupp to write the editorial for the week of his visit and ordered his newspaper to print whatever Mr. Leupp wrote. Mr. Leupp took advantage of Mr. Day’s generosity by writing “A Confession Wrung from Conscience,” an editorial piece ostensibly written by Mr. Day, but which totally reversed Mr. Day’s position, arguing in favor of the gold standard instead of the silver standard. Because Mr. Day lived in a silver-mining area where arguing in favor of the gold standard was both unpopular and likely to be dangerous, he was forced to hide his family until he could explain the cruel practical joke in the next week’s edition of his newspaper.

• Mark Twain was addicted to practical jokes — especially when they were jokes he played on other people. One day, when he was looking out the window of an editor’s office on the third floor of a building, he noticed a friend of his standing immediately below. Unfortunately for his friend, Mr. Twain had just been made the recipient of the gift of a watermelon by the editor. You can guess what happened to the friend and the watermelon. Still, Mr. Twain reflected, the friend came out ahead because the practical joke spoiled the watermelon, making it unsuitable for eating.

• James Thurber was ordered to court with a summons intended for John Thurber, his brother. Sitting in the witness seat, Mr. Thurber said that he didn’t have his birth certificate, but he did have a driver license, a couple of letters, and a few bills, all of which bore the name James Thurber. The court was convinced that James Thurber was not John Thurber — until humorist Robert Benchley walked into court, looked straight at James Thurber, and said, “How are you, John?”

• Many authors write witty and/or sentimental inscriptions in their books. Humorist Frank Sullivan wrote this inscription to Marise Campbell: “To dear Marise, without whose sympathetic help the undersigned would not have written this book,” then signed his name and the date. He wrote this inscription in a 1929 Staten Island telephone directory.

Prejudice

• Playwright Lorraine Hansberry, author of the play A Raisin in the Sun, was born into a financially well-off family. Her father was a real estate agent in Chicago, and he was determined to challenge the legal segregation that kept blacks and whites in their own separate neighborhoods. Therefore, he bought a house in a white neighborhood and moved his family into it. As he expected, the city of Chicago ordered him to move out, and he responded with a lawsuit. In addition, because he expected trouble from his racist white neighbors, he made sure that a bodyguard protected his family when he was away from home, attending to the lawsuit. (Her parents told young Lorraine that the bodyguard was a friend.) At one point, several of their white neighbors gathered together into a mob, and someone threw a chunk of concrete into the Hansberrys’ front window, shattering glass everywhere and narrowly missing Lorraine. For a while, Lorraine’s mother stayed up late at night, patrolling her house with a loaded gun in her hands. During the tension, friends stopped by frequently and African-American cab drivers drove slowly past the house, checking to make sure that everything was okay. Eventually, the United States Supreme Court ruled in the Hansberrys’ favor, thus establishing that people could not be kept out of a particular neighborhood because of their race.

Throwback Thursday Trivia Question from Yesterday

On whose variety TV program would you have seen the June Taylor Dancers featuring a signature overhead camera shot?

       Jackie Gleason                                                      Source

Marjorie June Taylor (December 14, 1917 – May 16, 2004) was an American choreographer, best known as the founder of the June Taylor Dancers, who were featured on Jackie Gleason's various television variety programs.

In 1946, Taylor met Jackie Gleason at a Baltimore nightclub. The two became friends when Taylor helped Gleason overcome a case of stage fright. In 1948, Taylor made her television debut on The Toast of the Town starring Ed Sullivan, where six of her original dancers appeared as The Toastettes, bringing the chorus line to television. Two years later, Taylor joined Gleason's Cavalcade of Stars, and followed him, along with 16 dancers, to The Jackie Gleason Show, where her signature was the overhead camera shot of the dancers making kaleidoscopic geometric patterns.

Taylor was initially dubious about joining Gleason on his DuMont Network show because it meant signing a long-term contract; her husband, Sol Lerner, suggested she take the offer. The high-kicking, smiling routines that formed the first three minutes of each broadcast were Broadway-based and redolent of The Rockettes.

Taylor won an Emmy Award for choreography in 1955. Mercedes Ellington, granddaughter of Duke and daughter of Mercer, became the group's first African-American dancer in 1963. In 1965, the June Taylor Dancers added male performers to the troupe.        Source

Kevin in Washington DC replied:
That was Jackie Gleason. We used to watch his show on Saturday nights. It always kind of confused me, because it was a variety show that would usually contain an episode of “The Honeymooners”, and as a kid I couldn’t tell how old the re-runs of that show-within-a-show were. Were they from the sixties (when we were watching) or back to the fifties? But they were funny, so I didn’t care too much.

Jacqueline responded:

Dave wrote:
The Jackie Gleason Show. June Taylor and Gleason became good friends in 1946 and he featured her dance group in his variety TV series and specials (off and on from 1954-1970). Gleason had a lot of clout with CBS, and got what he wanted (The network paid a him a huge annual retainer fee to guarantee that when he felt like being on TV he would be on CBS). Taylor’s sister, and former member of the June Taylor Dancers, became Jackie Gleason’s 3rd (and last) wife in 1975. They had apparently been romantically involved a decade earlier, during the years when Gleason’s 1st wife refused to grant him a divorce.

Don’t Use Our Song

Dee Snider

Twisted Sister singer Dee Snider took to social media to condemn anti-maskers who went into a Florida Target store blaring the group’s hit “We’re Not Gonna Take It” while ripping off their masks.

In a tweet Wednesday, Snider called the stunt “moronic,” and shared a video that was recorded by an upset customer inside the Target at Coral Ridge Mall in Fort Lauderdale. The video had more than 30 million views.

Snider said the group doesn’t have his “permission or blessing to use my song for their moronic cause.”

The stunt drew quick action from Broward County officials. Target was fined for not enforcing the county’s mask law and citations were mailed to the protesters, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported.

Brings Back Sunday Night Movies

CBS

CBS Sunday Night Movies will return October 4 for a six installments featuring films from the Paramount Pictures library. To make room for the films, the Sunday edition of Big Brother will relocate to Monday starting October 5.

The network first resurrected its Sunday movie franchise in late spring to help fill the void left by the COVID-related production shutdown cutting short the seasons of most CBS scripted series.

Sunday Night Movies will serve a similar purpose in October, warming up the night until new episodes of NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans and Equalizer start coming in. Cancels ‘Stumptown’

ABC

ABC has rounded out its fall schedule with changes and premiere dates involving its drama series.

Five ABC dramas — returning Grey’s Anatomy, Station 19, The Good Doctor and A Million Little Things as well as straight-to-series newcomer Big Sky — which were featured on the fall 2020 schedule unveiled by the network in June, have been assigned November premiere dates and to roll out between Nov. 2 (The Good Doctor) and Nov. 19 (A Million Little Things). All five series are already in production on their new seasons in Vancouver (The Good Doctor, Big Sky, AMLT) and Los Angeles (Grey’s Anatomy and spinoff Station 19).

The major change from the announced ABC fall schedule involves For Life taking over the Wednesday 10 PM slot from the previously renewed Stumptown, which was canceled yesterday. Additionally, The Rookie has been officially pushed to later in the season. ABC already had slated reality series Card Sharks in the Sunday 10 PM hour, starting Oct. 18, to fill in for the Nathan Fillion drama, which is yet to begin production.

Headed Back To Prison

Amy Locane

A former “Melrose Place” actress who has already served a prison sentence for a fatal 2010 drunken driving crash in New Jersey is headed back behind bars after a judge agreed with prosecutors Thursday that her initial sentence was too lenient.

Saying Amy Locane still refuses to fully acknowledge her culpability in the crash that killed 60-year-old Helene Seeman and severely injured Seeman's husband, state Superior Court Judge Angela Borkowski sentenced her to eight years in state prison. State law requires her to serve more than six years before being eligible for parole.

Locane apologized to the Seeman family in a brief statement. She was placed in handcuffs and taken into custody by court deputies after the proceeding in state court in Somerville.

It was a startling development in a case that has bounced around the New Jersey court system for nearly a decade and has now featured four sentencings in front of three judges, plus numerous appeals.

Loses Art Trademark Battle

Banksy

Banksy has lost a legal battle over one of his most famous artworks, with a trademark attorney calling the decision “devastating” for the artist.

The artwork, which depicts a masked protester throwing a bouquet of flowers, appeared on a wall in Jerusalem in 2005. It has since been reappropriated by the UK card company Full Colour Black, which has used the artwork on cards.

In 2014, Banksy successfully applied for an EU trademark for the work, which was then challenged by Full Colour Black. The company argued that the artist was not entitled to the trademark as he did not wish to use it for trade purposes or for branding.

As a result of the challenge, Banksy opened up his own shop in October 2019 which featured versions of his artwork for sale. In an interview, the artist admitted that the shop was opened “for the sole purpose of fulfilling trademark categories”.

Judges at the European Union Intellectual Property Office have now ruled in favour of Full Colour Black. They argued that Banksy’s decision to graffiti public property and his previous expressions of disinterest in maintaining the copyright to his own work were both factors in the ruling.

Manzanar. Gila River. Tule Lake. Heart Mountain...

Barr

Attorney General William Barr seems to think public health precautions are akin to one of the greatest mass atrocities America has ever committed.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many states and cities implemented stay-at-home orders requiring people to remain inside except for work and other essential activities. Studies showed those orders prevented explosions of COVID-19 cases and likely saved thousands of lives, but to Barr, they verged on unconstitutional.

During a Wednesday talk at Hillsdale College's "Constitution Day" celebration, Barr posited that "putting a national lockdown, stay-at-home orders, [are] like house arrest." "Other than slavery ... this is the greatest intrusion on civil liberties in American history," Barr continued.

Barr's comments drew a ton of criticism, including from short-lived White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci, who called it another example of how Barr has continually toyed with "radical right-wing nonsense" under President Trump.

Strongly Suggests

Ku$hner

President Trump (R-Morally Bankrupt) told Fox & Friends on Tuesday that despite earlier denials, he had been all set to assassinate Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in 2017 but James Mattis, his defense secretary at the time, "didn't want to do it." Political assassinations have been illegal in the U.S. since President Gerald Ford signed Executive Order 11905 in 1976, following revelations of U.S. assassination attempts in Latin America.

A few hours after Trump told Fox & Friends he "would have rather taken [Assad] out," his son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner (R-Human Skin Tag) told Sinclair Broadcasting's James Rosen that Trump "always keeps all options on the table," Rosen reported Wednesday. In the interview, he asked Kushner twice if Trump considered assassinating foreign leaders "a legitimate tool of U.S. foreign policy," and Kushner suggested the answer is yes, even if he preferred not to use the word assassination.

"Different terminology could be used to describe, you know, different methods that you're going to take to try to retaliate to somebody for an action that they've taken," Kushner said. Trump "knows that it's a full-contact sport. This is not touch football."

Executive Order 11905 does not define political assassination, and while Trump opted against assassinating Assad, he did order the killing of a top Iranian general, Qassem Suleimani. The Trump administration used "different terminology" to describe that targeted drone strike, but whether or not it was lawful rests on a disputed technicality.

DNA Analysis

Vikings

What is a Viking? The word conjures an unmistakable mental image: the stereotype of bold Scandinavian invaders, fearsome marauders with white skin and pale hair, ruthlessly raiding and voyaging their way across the globe over 1,000 years ago.

Only, there is a mistake after all, it seems – crucial details in this longstanding legend are wrong, new research reveals. According to a large genetic analysis of over 400 Viking skeletons scattered across Europe, many Vikings weren't of Scandinavian ancestry, and many would have had dark hair, not blonde.

"The results change the perception of who a Viking actually was," says evolutionary geneticist Eske Willerslev, jointly affiliated with the University of Cambridge and the University of Copenhagen.

DNA sequencing of the remains – comprising bones from men, women, children, and babies – suggests that both before and during the Viking Age, a diverse array of foreign genetic influences flowed into Scandinavian bloodlines, from Asia, Southern Europe, and the British Isles.
