Big Dog Watch Continues

Dave Letterman's Guest Wednesday

Bill Clinton

Last night viewers got to see what late-night talk TV used to be like, when interesting people were guests instead of just celebrities hawking their latest flick, TV show or news program.

NBC late-night host Jay Leno landed Sen. John McCain on the 9/11 anniversary, while CBS's David Letterman snared Bill Clinton for his entire show -- a fact that CBS did not reveal until very late yesterday afternoon.

"I guess he's never seen the show," Letterman joked as he announced his guest to his audience.

"When you have a former president, the security is unbelievable . . . tighter than Joan Rivers's face," he added.

Clinton said that when he heard about the attack on the World Trade Center, while in Australia, he knew immediately it was the work of Osama bin Laden. "I knew it would require a sophisticated operation," Clinton said, adding, "Iraq wouldn't do it; they have a country, they have targets . . . he lives in caves."

"You know what I think? I think you may still be president," Letterman joked after Clinton gave a particularly erudite answer to one of Letterman's questions about bin Laden.

"When you're president you learn to act like you know what you're talking about," Clinton replied. "You don't lose it overnight; it sort of drifts away from you."

Letterman asked Clinton about reports that he might host a talk show. The former president said that with all late-night slots occupied, the only thing open to him is daytime talk TV, and that involves too much work too early in the day and is not conducive to political discussion. Ex-presidents should spend at least half their time on public service, he said.

Commenting On Sting's Anatomy

Bono

Bono has some astonishing news about Sting's anatomy.

The other night at a concert in Cannes, the U2 rocker introduced the ex-Policeman as "one of the most talented singers and songwriters in the world. He plays a mean bass guitar. He's good-looking. He's fit. He has a beautiful wife -- Trudie Styler."

"But God is fair," added Bono, who went on to state that Sting has no penis.

"Did you ever wonder why he's into Tantric sex and yoga? It's called overcompensation."

The audience -- which included Heidi Klum, Melanie Griffith, Naomi Campbell, Pam Anderson, Patricia Arquette, Ricky Martin and Bryan Adams -- squealed. But no one laughed as hard as Sting.

Resumes This Sunday Night

'The Sopranos'

A lot — too much — has happened since "The Sopranos" completed its third season.

That was in May 2001 as HBO's great drama wrung out a finale of unrelieved foreboding.

Sunday at 9 p.m. EDT, "The Sopranos" kicks off another 13 weekly episodes. And not a moment too soon.

Set in New Jersey, where Tony Soprano presides as husband, father and mob boss, "The Sopranos" has clipped a glimpse of the Twin Towers from its opening titles. But it wastes no time addressing the tragedy of 9-11.

"Ma really went downhill after the World Trade Center," Soprano soldier Bobby Bacala tells Tony in Sunday's opener. Then the none-too-bright Bacala adds, "Quasimodo predicted all this."

"Nostradamus," Tony impatiently corrects him. "Quasimodo's the hunchback of Notre Dame."

'Captain Justice'

Roger Corman

B-movie maven Roger Corman plans to make a now-rare foray into the theatrical feature world with "Captain Justice," an action comedy budgeted at $3 million.

Written and to be directed by Victoria Lakeman, the picture is the story of a young boy whose dreams collide with real-life adventures when a criminal poses as the boy's favorite comicbook hero.

While the budget is huge by Corman's usual shoestring standards, he's true to form in seeking ways to trim the actual cash outlay through both Canadian and Irish tax subsidies as well as a German tax shelter.

He's also planning to utilize his retired comic label, Cosmic Comics, to publish a "Captain Justice" comic book in tandem with the film's release.

Could Face Drug Charges

Nick Nolte

Actor Nick Nolte, arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of drunk driving, could also face drugs charges, police said on Thursday.

Nolte, 61, was described by highway police as "drooling" and "completely out of it" when he was pulled over in Malibu for driving erratically in his black Mercedes.

Nolte, who has talked openly about his heavy drinking, was arrested after failing a field sobriety test. He was taken back to the police station where he was booked on suspicion of drunk driving and photographed in a Hawaiian shirt looking bleary-eyed and disheveled.

Police said on Thursday they also expected to pursue other charges against Nolte for driving under the influence of narcotics.

"We have strong reason to believe there were drugs involved," California Highway Patrol spokesman Leland Tang told reporters.

Try to Unite World in Song

Jimmy Cliff & Dave Stewart

Former Eurythmics guitarist Dave Stewart and reggae great Jimmy Cliff launched a plan Thursday to unite the world in song — at least for one day.

The musicians want radio stations around the world to play the song "Peace One Day" on Sept. 21, the United Nations-designated International Day of Peace.

Stewart said the song will be available free to radio stations and on the Internet.

The international peace day is the project of filmmaker Jeremy Gilley, who lobbied the United Nations to recognize it. Last year, the U.N. General Assembly passed a resolution calling on people to mark Sept. 21 as a day of cease-fires and nonviolence.

Humor-Deficient Diva Pitches Hissy

Celine Dion

Canadian pop diva Celine Dion doesn't like mockery, or maybe it's her husband and manager Rene Angelil.

Angelil sent a notice of claim to a popular Montreal-based radio station, demanding it stop playing a parody of Dion's song "I'm Alive," in which the singer is called, among other things, "annoying."

The radio station claims it was only trying to be funny, but Angelil didn't laugh at the joke.

The Dion parody was withdrawn on Thursday.

Angelil also pressured the Radio Energie network, which operates the Montreal station and eight others across the province of Quebec, not to run any Dion songs in the future.

I'd be just as happy if no one played Celine Dion's music on any radio station, ever.

Launches Review of Media Ownership

Federal Communications Commission

The Federal Communications Commission on Thursday launched a broad effort to update and possibly relax federal media ownership limits, a move that could spark a flurry of consolidation in the industry.

The agency will review limits on how much of the national television audience one company can reach, limits on local radio station concentration, and a ban on some common ownership in a market of television and radio stations or a television station and a newspaper.

Companies like the Tribune Co., owner of several daily newspapers and television stations, are anxious to broaden their presence in some communities by combining their news-gathering efforts and offering reports across several media outlets.

The agency will seek public comment and economic data over 90 days, which it hopes will guide the agency as it writes new rules. It also has several studies underway to aid its review.

The review of the decades-old rules follows a series of decisions from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, which over the last year has harshly admonished the FCC for not sufficiently justifying the limits.

The debate will likely be fierce since some media giants want to acquire more properties while consumer groups and a bipartisan set of lawmakers has expressed concerns about consolidation in the media marketplace.

For the rest of this lengthy, but important article, Federal Communications Commission

(Watch out for code words like 'consolidation' - which means monopoly in plain English. There are only 6 owners of the media, 2 years ago there were 23. There are only media giants involved at this point. Yeah, we need even more 'consolidation'.)

Outlines 'Millionaire' Changes

Meredith Vieira

Meredith Vieira's friends are having fun with her new job as host of the daytime edition of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire."

Vieira says she was "ordering dinner with some friends at a restaurant and one them turned to her and said "is that your final answer?" Vieira jokingly says she wanted to toss her drink at her friend and say "no, 'this' is." She says the she now understands what Regis Philbin probably went through day after day. But, she says "it's all in good fun."

Near the end of the nighttime version of "Millionaire," ABC began showing celebrity versions. Vieira says that in her syndicated show there won't be as many specialty shows.

"At this point, they have no intention of having celebrity versions," Vieira tells AP Radio. "I think they want to get back to the roots of the show. The very first contestant for this new weekday version of "Millionaire" is a New York City firefighter. It's regular people for whom winning this kind of money is life changing.

The weekday edition of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" starts Monday.

Musician Terminally Ill

Warren Zevon

Acerbic singer-songwriter Warren Zevon, best known for the hit song "Werewolves of London," has been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, his publicist said on Thursday.

"I'm OK with it, but it'll be a drag if I don't make it 'till the next James Bond movie comes out," Zevon, 55, joked in a statement, released by spokeswoman Diana Baron. (The next Bond film, titled "Die Another Day," comes out on Nov. 22.)

Zevon is spending his remaining weeks with his two adult children, son Jordan and daughter Ariel. He will shortly head to a Los Angeles studio to record a batch of songs, some written after he received his diagnosis last month, Baron said.

Although "Werewolves of London" was a top 10 hit in 1978, the Chicago-born Zevon spent his 33-year recording career as a cult artist, unleashing his sardonic hooks and observant lyrics on a series of acclaimed albums. He also worked with the likes of Jackson Browne, the Everly Brothers and members of R.E.M.

Less prolific in recent years, Zevon released a new album in 2001, "My Ride's Here," featuring musical contributions from Irish poet Paul Muldoon, Hunter S. Thompson and novelist Carl Hiaasen, Zevon's fishing buddy.

Whale Now Seems Healthy

Keiko

Keiko the killer whale is likely to remain in Norway under human care for the winter, after the "Free Willy" film star swam to the Scandinavian nation after his release in Iceland, his handler said Thursday.

The friendly whale became an instant hit but was so mobbed by fans petting him, swimming with him and even climbing on his back that officials last week made it illegal to go closer than 50 yards.

His support team became worried when Keiko hovered listless near shore for several days, possibly due to shock or exhaustion from crowds, but veterinarians have declared the nearly 25-year-old killer whale healthy, Canadian Colin Baird, said Thursday.

Many Norwegian coastal communities, including Halsa, have started lobbying to keep Keiko during his golden years. Killer whales generally live to be about 35, according to his team.

Halsa has adopted the slogan "Do like Keiko. Pick Halsa."

Man With A Mission

Michael Eisner

Faced with the prospect of disgruntled Mouse House shareholders certain to be heard loud and clear at this month's stockholders meeting, Walt Disney Co. chairman Michael Eisner has decided to make a preemptive strike.

Eisner will hold a series of tete-a-tetes with analysts at Disney's Times Square studios Thursday. While Disney officials insisted the meetings were routine, their timing of the sessions and the mounting pressure to turn around the conglom's sputtering stock suggest Eisner is on a mission.

Eisner will apparently be re-emphasizing and clarifying previous disclosures. In fact, over the last two months, Disney has become more proactive in its communications with Wall Street, said one analyst, who praised Eisner's and CFO Tom Stagg's efforts to be more upfront with the investment community after years of bumpy and sometimes obstructive relationships.

Despite the peace mission, Eisner may be focused on the new thorn in his side: Bert Denton and private equity group Providence Capital Inc. In the run-up to a pivotal Disney board meeting later this month, Disney shareholder Providence announced Wednesday that it will host its own meeting for institutional shareholders of Walt Disney in order to discuss issues that have "undermined investor confidence" in the firm.

Denton predicts two to three current board members will step down at the upcoming board meeting, and is hoping that at least one replacement will be a new member from a management and industrial background with knowledge of turnarounds. "The board needs less academic and artistic members and more heavy duty industrial execs that are strong-willed and good at running companies," he said.

House Sold For $210,000

Kurt Cobain

Since the nondescript, rust-colored house with white trim was offered on eBay last Thursday, the high offer from a serious bidder is $210,000, which is $10,000 over the minimum set by Ed and Jennifer McKee of Oregon City, Ore.

More than 50 bids had come in, the highest for more than $40 million, by the time the McKees began checking on the validity of the bidders.

The couple bought the 2,313-square-foot home, 70 miles southwest of Seattle, for $42,500 last month without knowing Cobain lived there from ages 11 to 15 with his father and stepmother. The seller was a bank that had foreclosed on the property.

An attorney for Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, and their daughter said Thursday the Cobain estate hadn't authorized the auction.

Cucumberophone?

First Viennese Vegetable Orchestra

Forget the cello, just listen to that cucumberophone. The land of Mozart will be exporting its latest cultural product next week when the First Viennese Vegetable Orchestra goes on its nine-date debut European tour.

The orchestra, which consists of eight musicians, one sound technician and one cook, plays vegetable-based instruments they make themselves.

It takes the band about half an hour to make a carrot flute, and under 15 minutes to make a cucumberophone, which has a pepper bell and cucumber tubing. Other instruments include celeriac bongos, eggplant cymbals and pumpkin drums.

At the end of a performance, which can include free jazz, experimental music, or the Radetzky March by Austrian Johann Strauss, the stage is cleared and a cook uses the instruments to prepare a soup for both audience and musicians.

20 Years Ago Saturday

Princess Grace

Below the gilded dome of the Cathedral of Monaco lies the body of Princess Grace. Flowers are arranged over the marble slab of her tomb, and a wooden plaque instructs visitors: "Silence and Respect."

In the two decades since her death on Sept. 14, 1982 — she died at 52 of injuries suffered in a car crash — silence and respect have been hard to come by.

Monaco, once a sleepy resort favored by European royalty, is now a popular tax haven with celebrities, bankers and sports figures.

Streets once known for elegance and wealth are now clogged with trinket shops and tourists, and the lives of the princess' royal children are tabloid fare.

Palace officials say there are no special plans to mark the 20th anniversary of her death on Saturday; only the annual private ceremony at the palace chapel.

Spotted Dick

A traditional pudding which was renamed after hospital managers thought patients would be too embarrassed to ask for it, is being restored to Gloucestershire's hospital menus.

'Spotted Dick' will replace 'Spotted Richard' after it was decided patients are capable of overcoming their blushes long enough to ask for it.

The name change was originally introduced three years by the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Trust.

It was thought patients might feel uncomfortable asking for the dessert.

Now it has been decided that Spotted Dick will make a return when new menus are printed in the next few months.

Cafeteria Catholic Attacks Vatican

Mel Gibson

Mel Gibson, a Roman Catholic who is to play Christ in a new film, has attacked the Vatican, saying that he does not believe in the Church as an institution.

The actor, who says that he is an "old fashioned Catholic" who rigorously supports the Latin Mass, is shooting Passion in Rome and in the southern Italian town of Matera. He says that he is happy that his only daughter has decided to become a nun.

Gibson, 46, had a Catholic upbringing and attended a Catholic boys' school in Australia. He is scathing about the Church's hierarchy, saying that the Vatican was "a wolf in sheep's clothing".

"My love for religion was transmitted to me by my father. But I do not believe in the Church as an institution". Gibson has a private chapel at his home in Malibu, California, at which the service is conducted every Sunday in Latin.

Gibson is said by friends to have become more conservative in his religious views in middle age.

Taking A Stand

Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz city leaders plan to take part in a public pot giveaway next week to protest a recent federal raid of a medicinal marijuana cooperative that served mostly terminally ill members.

City Councilman Ed Porter said on Thursday he wants to show solidarity with residents in the beach community located some 70 miles (113 km) south of San Francisco who are outraged at the federal raid last week that occurred without the support or knowledge of local officials.

Federal agents also arrested the cooperative's owners Michael and Valerie Corral, who were instrumental in drafting the trailblazing 1996 California law that allowed patients and their care-givers to grow marijuana for their own medicine.

The event, which is not sponsored by the city, is expected to take place outside City Hall on Tuesday. Those wishing to pick up marijuana will need to show a prescription for the drug which is legal in California for medical use, Porter said.

Richard Meyer, a spokesman for the Drug Enforcement Administration, said he was "appalled" by the plan but declined to detail whether federal agents would be at the event to make arrests.

The U.S. medical marijuana movement, which gained strength in California during the height of the AIDS epidemic, also received a setback in 2001 when the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously upheld the federal ban on marijuana.

But California's own state Supreme Court recently took an opposite tack, ruling for the first time that ailing Californians who use or grow marijuana with a physician's approval cannot be prosecuted in state courts - currently the venue for most marijuana cases.

With the main harvest coming up in a month or two, growers in a village near Mazar-e-Sharif, say they'll ignore government warnings to tear up their crops. Since the Taliban were ousted in a U.S.-led war last year, Afghanistan's new government and the United Nations have focused anti-drug efforts on eradicating opium-bearing poppies, which are used to make heroin.
