Garrison Keillor: Vetting the health-care issue a la Rover and Spot
I caught part of a radio call-in show the other day on which a vet was fielding questions about Addison's disease among basset hounds and a cocker spaniel's hypothyroid problem and what can be done about a bulldog who snores (he needs to lose weight), and it was interesting to discover the excellent medical care that dogs have come to expect.
Tom Danehy: When Tom dies, you can say whatever you want about him (tucsonweekly.com)
Some industrial-strength party-pooper recently told me that I'm going to die some day. I had never really given it much thought, but I suppose I'm going to have to think about it at some time in the future, especially after Obama forces mandatory health insurance on me, and I have to go in front of one of the Palin Panels.
"Seven Gothic Tales" by Isak Dinesen: A review by Joanna Scott
Known in this country by her pseudonym, Isak Dinesen, the Danish writer Karen Blixen published her first collection of stories in 1934, at the age of 49. Though she'd returned to her family home in Denmark after spending seventeen years in British East Africa, Dinesen wrote her stories in English and secured her first contract with an American publisher. The book, Seven Gothic Tales, established Dinesen as a literary giant, a reputation that would be sustained throughout her life.
JAKE GYLLENHAAL: Interview with NATALIE PORTMAN (interviewmagazine.com)
Since she made her film debut at 12 in the professional, we've watched her evolve into one of the most successful, serious-minded actresses of her generation. But beneath the pristine exterior lurks a woman few have ever seen-until now. Behold Natalie Portman: unpackaged, uncensored, and unbound.
David Bruce: "The Kindest People Who Do Good Deeds: Volume 3" (Lulu.com) Download: FREE
This book contains 250 anecdotes about good deeds, including this one: Because of illness, comedian/singer Martha Raye was unable to appear on Garry Moore's nighttime show, so Carol Burnett, then a relative unknown, was asked to replace her. Ms. Raye watched the show, then mock-complained to Mr. Moore, "I knew you were going to have to get someone good to replace me-but did you have to get someone that good?" She also sent Ms. Burnett twelve roses.

In 1956, the actress who portrayed the mom on this TV show quit so the producers wrote her out as having died, making her character the first to be "killed off" in a sitcom. What sitcom was it?
Sha Na Na was the name of a syndicated variety series that ran from 1977 to 1981, hosted by the popular Rock & Roll/Comedy group of the same name. Donny York, Jocko Marcellino, and Screamin' Scott Simon of the TV group continue to tour as Sha Na Na.
Jon "Bowzer" Bauman would close out each show by saying "Good night, and grease for peace!" with Sha Na Na singing "Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight,_Sweetheart,_Goodnight" as their closing theme song.

Hadda be Bowzer and "Sha Na Na" who wrapped every show with the group singing, "Good Night Sweetheart," and then Bowzer stepping forward, looking into the camera, and saying: "Good night, and grease for peace!"
I can even visualize it now, but can't exactly remember the name of the show - except that it was on TV circa 1978 - when my children were quite young... (Wasn't that yesterday? Hahaha...)
PS: I have company coming from out of town and I may make sketchy appearances here for the next 10-days because we shall be making many little out of town trip - woo hoo!! Of course, being as compulsive as am I...
PS: Barbara, GET SOME SLEEP no matter were you are... We are pulling for you here!!

Must say I was never a fan of theirs, but the act did (does) have its charms.

MAM nailed it with:
On Sha Na Na Jon "Bowzer" Bauman would close out each show by saying "Good night, and grease for peace!" with Sha Na Na singing "Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight" as their closing theme song. The show featured the group performing hits from the 1950s and 1960s, along with comedy skits.

I sent a question about a story I had heard about Tupperware and Botulism upon first traveling to the Alaska Bush/Village places ...Enjoy!
And, Joe S nails it with:
Sha Na Na. I can hear Bowser saying it.
I'm not in a very good mood tonight. I'm about to remove my Obama bumper stickers from my Ford Focus, I'm so pissed. On Election night Carla and I, sitting home alone, laughed and cheered and cried from sheer joy when the announcement came that Obama had won. Things were gonna change! But what do we have?
The same two wars with no end in sight, torture, Guantanimo, republicans calling the shots, and no universal health care. I feel very betrayed. Obama throwing the Public Option under the bus is the same as throwing all of us under the bus.
We're home since 8 last night. Still eerie feeling + ash/smoke & fire patrols. Ya, we're the step child up here, taken care of last. Maybe its a Home Despot revenge?

The Malaysian government has agreed to let Muslims attend a concert by U.S. hip-hop stars Black Eyed Peas, reversing an earlier ban imposed because the show is sponsored by an alcoholic beverage company, officials said Wednesday.
Ticket sales opened to Muslims on Wednesday for the Sept. 25 show, backed by Irish beer giant Guinness, said Bonor Seen, marketing manager for organizer Artiste World Entertainment.
A Culture Ministry official, who declined to be named citing ministry policy, said the ban was lifted late last week and a letter was sent to the organizer.
The protest reflects growing conflicts between moderate and conservative Muslims, including many occupying positions of power in the government and judiciary, in a country that has long been considered a moderate society in the Islamic world.

A porn movie shot by a feminist documentary maker and funded by taxpayers was set for its premiere in the Swedish capital of Stockholm on Thursday night.
Dirty Diaries, a collection of 12 short pornographic films, shot by director Mia Engberg received 500,000 Sweden kronor (69,000 dollars, 48,000 euros) in public funds from the Swedish Film Institute.
"Porn has always been made by men for men," Engberg told AFP, explaining her reasoning for shooting the Dirty Diaries.
"Above all, it's about showing sexuality through a female's perspective. It's not made to please a male audience and it's not made to make money," she added.
A U.S. appeals court judge called an unauthorized spin-off of J.D. Salinger's classic novel "The Catcher in the Rye" a "rather dismal piece of work" on Thursday and questioned whether the book harmed the famed novelist.
Lawyers for Swedish author Fredrik Colting, who penned "60 Years Later: Coming through the Rye," appealed a lower court ruling from July in favor of Salinger, who sued to block the book's publication in the United States.
A panel of three U.S. appeals court judges questioned lawyers for Salinger and Colting on whether the new book caused irreparable harm to Salinger, which would be legal grounds for blocking U.S. publication. Colting's book is already available in other countries including Britain, where it is labeled on its cover as a sequel to "The Catcher in the Rye".
"The fact is, that anybody can just go on the Internet and get the London edition," said Judge Guido Calabresi, questioning whether the Internet has affected claims of copyright damage to authors and created "a never-never land."

"Saturday Night Live" will begin its fall season with two new cast members.
A person close to the show confirmed that Jenny Slate and Nasim Pedrad have joined the show. The person requested anonymity because NBC has not made an official announcement.
Both comedians have connections to the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, the New York- and Los Angeles-based comedy theater that also birthed the careers of numerous "SNL" cast members.
Slate previously partnered with Gabe Liedman for the comedy show "Gabe & Jenny." Pedrad, born in Tehran, Iran, previously had a one-woman show, "Me, Myself & Iran."
A Franco-Spanish journalist has been brutally murdered in El Salvador, weeks before the release of his latest documentary on the violent drug-running gangs that blight the country.
Christian Poveda, 54, was found dead near his vehicle on a road north of the capital San Salvador on Wednesday, with what an autopsy later confirmed were four bullet wounds to the face, police and doctors said.
He had been filming in La Campanera, a suburb of El Salvador's capital where gangs known as "maras" pervade.
Investigators said it was not clear if he was the victim of a robbery, or was killed by members of the gangs whose lives he had meticulously documented.
Others said robbery appeared not to have been a motive, since Poveda's car, cameras and recording equipment remained untouched near his body, along with spent nine-millimeter bullet shells.

Authorities say a college professor on a crusade to change the way a Los Angeles weatherman uses terminology has to leave him alone or face six months in jail. Melanie Patton Renfrew, a Harbor College teacher, wants KNBC-TV's Fritz Coleman to change references to onshore and offshore winds.
She says the terms are confusing because people don't know which are coming and which are going.
Burbank-based KNBC obtained a restraining order in March 2008 after calling her behavior bizarre and saying Coleman feared for his safety.
Prosecutors say she continued sending letters and e-mails. Last month, she pleaded no contest to violating the order.
A Salt Lake City woman who held a Guinness World Record for her long fingernails before they broke off in a car crash says it was the most dramatic event of her life. But Lee Redmond, who lost the fingernails in February, says it's now much easier to do things and her hands seem to fly with the weight of the nails gone.
The 68-year-old won't grow her nails out again, saying it took 30 years the first time and she may not live for another 30.
Redmond hadn't cut her nails since 1979 and entered the Guinness World Records book in 2002 for longest fingernails on a woman.
The Guinness Web site says her nails measured a total of more than 28 feet long in 2008, with the longest nail on her right thumb at 2 feet, 11 inches.
Aspen trees showing the effects of "sudden aspen decline" or SAD are seen in Colorado this undated photograph. The American West is losing its autumn colors as global warming begins to bite and there is far more at stake than iconic scenery. Aspen, the white-barked trees with golden leaves that gave their name to the famed Colorado ski resort, have been dying off across the Rocky Mountain states. The die-off is puzzling but some foresters point to climate change.

Don Imus is moving to Fox Rupert Business Network.
The young cable network, which has been struggling to find viewers, has agreed to simulcast Imus' radio show on weekdays from 6 to 9 a.m. It will start on Oct. 5.
RFD-TV, a Nashville-based cable and satellite network, recently stopped showing Imus after two years.
The FBN deal is considered a way to boost visibility for Imus and the network. But it also reduces the airtime of one of FBN's most prominent personalities, Alexis Glick, from three hours to one in the morning.

A sign reads: "Be Aware, Dangerous Terrain" at the newly sand sprayed beaches in front of the coastal village of Monster August 31, 2009. With scientists predicting that sea levels will rise by about one metre (3.3 feet) this century, the Dutch are reversing centuries of tradition to create natural flood plains for rivers as well as rebuild mangrove swamps as buffers against the sea. Instead of raising dikes, the Dutch want to reclaim land and build public recreation areas that can absorb storm surges.
