Mark Morford: Fierce comics at the end of the world (SF Gate)
Did you hear the one about Rusty Rockets - AKA Russell Brand - taking down Fox News' ultra-doltish Sean Hannity, for the latter's insufferable, bullying interview style and awesomely insulting treatment of particular guests who won't say what he wants them to say - not to mention Hannity/Fox's own corrosive, intellectually offensive comprehension of the issues of the day?
Andrew Tobias: Fundraising Stories, Part 2
I got an e-mail from one of you in 2006 asking if I had any thoughts on a stock he owned a lot of shares of. "Sorry, no," I wrote back, "but what do you mean by 'a lot'?" "A lot. It's my entire portfolio."
Ben Yagoda: Does Novel Now Mean Any Book? (Slate)
I was taken aback recently to pick up an (unnamed) magazine for which I'd written an article and see my brief bio begin with the words: "Ben Yagoda is a novelist. … " I am not a novelist, never have been, and have not (since the age of 15) even had any aspirations in that direction.
Columbo is an American detective mystery television film series (1968-1978, 1989-2003), starring Peter Falk as Columbo, a homicide detective with the Los Angeles Police Department. The character and television show were created by William Link and Richard Levinson. The show popularized the inverted detective story format. Almost every episode begins by showing the commission of the crime and its perpetrator; the series therefore has no "whodunit" element. The plot revolves mainly around how the perpetrator, whose identity is already known to the audience, will finally be caught and exposed.
Columbo's first name is never explicitly mentioned during the series. Even the opening credits just simply read, "Peter Falk as Columbo". When asked, Columbo always emphatically answers "Lieutenant". In the episode "By Dawn's Early Light", when he is asked if he has a first name, he replies that the only person who "calls" him "that" is his wife.
However, the name "Frank" is often seen relatively clearly on his police ID. In the 1971 episode "Dead Weight", when Columbo introduces himself to General Hollister, the audience is shown a brief close-up of Columbo's badge and police ID; the signature reads "Frank Columbo". The signature "Frank Columbo" is most clearly visible in the episode "A Matter of Honor", in which it is also seen that Columbo's badge number is 416. This later appears on the address of a neighbor of the local police comisario (played by Pedro Armendáriz Jr.). Universal Studios, in the box set of seasons 1-4 under their Playback label, included a picture of Columbo's police badge on the back of the box, with signature "Frank Columbo" and "Lt. Frank Columbo" in type. The name "Frank" is also clearly seen in the episode from 1991 called "Death Hits The Jackpot" when Lt. Columbo shows how shiny his badge is when explaining to Rip Torn's character how he was able to figure out how he was in the victim's apartment at the time of the murder. When Columbo holds his badge up, the name Frank is clearly typed on his LAPD I.D. card at the top.
Several sources cite the lieutenant's name as "Philip Columbo". Columbo's first name Philip was conceived by Fred L. Worth. In Worth's book, The Trivia Encyclopedia, the fictitious entry about Columbo's first name was actually a "copyright trap" - a deliberately false statement intended to reveal subsequent copyright infringement. When his false information was later included as one of the questions in the board game Trivial Pursuit, he filed a $300 million lawsuit. The publishers of Trivial Pursuit did acknowledge that Worth's books were among their sources, but argued that this was not improper, as facts are not protected by copyright and the name appeared across several sources. The district court judge agreed, ruling in favor of the Trivial Pursuit publishers. The decision was appealed, but in September 1987 the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit upheld the ruling. Worth asked the Supreme Court of the United States to review the case, but the Court declined, denying certiorari in March 1988.

magnificent no matter which stage persona he was playing. He

Probably Frank, though he claimed Lieutenant, and Philip was used as a copyright trap.

Lt. Frank Columbo, not fuckin Phillip. As seen right here with his wife Shera Danese. I liked Colombo. Peter Falk started to stick the Salami to Shera when she was a guest star on his show. My hats off to him! He also drove a 1959 Peugeot 403 Convertible…..reminds me of a friend that drove a Borgward. He owned three…One to drive and two for parts. I imagine it was the same for the Peugeots.

The National Guard is ending its sponsorship of both NASCAR's most popular driver and one of the most recognizable names in IndyCar.
It's not clear when the guard is leaving motorsports. It said in a Wednesday statement on its web site that its contracts to sponsor Dale Earnhardt Jr. in NASCAR and Graham Rahal in IndyCar run through the end of the year. Typically, government contracts are reviewed annually.
Bobby Rahal, co-owner of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, said he learned of the guard's decision on Wednesday. He called it disappointing news "given the significant incremental brand exposure we have worked to produce for the National Guard in our first season together, including various off-track marketing and advertising programs focused on supporting the mission set forth."
The guard said it spent $32 million on its NASCAR sponsorship and $12 million on its IndyCar sponsorship this year, and noted that "sports sponsorships have played an important role in helping the guard build strong brand awareness." But, the guard statement said its sponsorship contracts in NASCAR and IndyCar "are set to expire at the end of the current season," which contradicts the Hendrick claim.

A senior executive from MSNBC is expected to take the lead producing role at ABC's "The View," the latest signal that the durable daytime program will change radically following the retirement of its co-creator, Barbara Walters.
Bill Wolff, who exec produces MSNBC's "Rachel Maddow Show" and serves as vice president of that news outlet's primetime programing, is leaving the NBCUniversal-owned network to run "The View" at ABC, according to a person familiar with the matter. By doing so, he will replace Bill Geddie, who created the show with Walters and has run it as its executive producer since it debuted in 1997.
An MSNBC spokeswoman confirmed Wolff is leaving the network. An ABC spokeswoman for "The View" could not be reached for immediate comment.
ABC announced in July that Rosie O'Donnell, the often-controversial hostess and comedienne, would join Whoopi Goldberg at the center of "The View" for its 18th season. O'Donnell previously replaced Meredith Vieira on the show in the fall of 2006. She often clashed with co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck. O'Donnell left the show in the spring of 2007, a move that was made before the end of her contract. One of the reasons for her departure, she has said in the past, was an inability to gel with the program's producer.
Benjamin Bailar, the former Postmaster General, has told Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe that the United States Postal Services is "prostituting" its stamp program. Bailer resigned from the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee, the group that decides what goes on stamps, in a nine paragraph letter.
Linn's Stamp News first obtained the letter, sent July 23rd. In it, Bailar takes issue with the Post Office selecting commercial subjects for stamps, as these images help them earn more money, and the USPS is notoriously broke.
At the September 2013 Committee meeting, members complained that the "agency's marketing staff was pushing pop culture over more enduring images." A series of stamps featuring Harry Potter were a particular point of contention, because the committee had no input in selecting these. In the eyes of committee members, particularly Bailar, these designs were selected through an outside marketing consultation and chosen purely to boost sales.
In response to this, Bailar wrote, "The stamp program should celebrate the things that are great about the United States and serve as a medium to communicate those things to a world-wide audience." Bailar went further to say, "Suffice it to say that the committee should be a first-class resource for you and the Postal Service, and I believe it is no longer meeting that standard."
It seems the Harry Potter stamps really struck a cord, as Bailar was bold enough to write, "To prostitute that goal in the pursuit of possibly illusory profits does not make sense to me."

Volunteers joined Nevada wildlife officials this week in a rescue mission to save thousands of stranded trout and other fish from irrigation ditches that have been cut off from Truckee River water supplies due to drought in the Reno area.
Two dozen wader-clad rescuers splashed through the knee-deep ditches that soon will be going dry, netting an estimated 6,000 fish over two days.
Most were returned Wednesday to the Truckee River near Verdi, just west of Reno, where a rare stretch of wet August weather helped boost flows the past few days with more than an inch of precipitation.
The Truckee Meadows Water Authority shut off flows last week to the ditches that deliver river water to power generation and hydroelectric plants the authority operates.
A tourist seeking to take pictures of Yellowstone National Park crashed a camera-equipped drone into its largest hot spring, possibly damaging the prized geothermal feature, a park official said on Wednesday.
The incident follows the crash earlier this summer of a drone into a marina at Yellowstone Lake and a string of radio-controlled aircraft violations at Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming.
It was not clear if the drone that crashed Grand Prismatic Spring on Saturday and sank into its depths would damage the geothermal feature, park spokesman Al Nash said, and officials were still trying to decide whether to remove it.
The park is puzzling over how to find the drone and extract it without damaging the hot spring, which is 370 feet in diameter, more than 121 feet deep and known for its brilliant colors caused by bacteria and minerals in the water.

The largest red tide bloom seen in Florida in nearly a decade has killed thousands of fish in the Gulf of Mexico and may pose a greater health threat if it washes ashore as expected in the next two weeks, researchers said on Thursday.
The patchy bloom stretches from the curve of the Panhandle to the central Tampa Bay region. It measures approximately 80 miles (130 km) long by 50 miles (80 km) wide.
Red tide occurs when naturally occurring algae bloom out of control, producing toxins deadly to fish and other marine life. The odorless chemicals can trigger respiratory distress in people, such as coughing and wheezing.
The agency has received reports of thousands of dead fish, including snapper, grouper, flounder, crabs, bull sharks, eel and octopus. This is the largest bloom seen since 2006.
A Sacramento-area television news anchor charged with grand theft and burglary over the alleged theft of Coach wallets from an outlet store has resigned from her job.
Sabrina Rodriguez was charged last week in connection with a 2013 incident in which merchandise was stolen from a store in the Sacramento suburb of Folsom.
The award-winning anchor at the Sacramento Fox News affiliate had said she was innocent of the charges, and on Monday the station's website said Rodriguez had been granted a voluntary leave of absence.
However, after massive publicity about the case, including a story on a rival station pointing out that Rodriguez herself had done a story on how easy it was to shoplift high end wallets, the reporter and morning news anchor resigned.

The possibility of a war crimes investigation into the conduct of Israeli forces in Gaza, until recently unthinkable, has grown after the Palestinians said this week they wanted to become a party to the International Criminal Court.
The world's permanent war crimes court in The Hague declined two years ago to investigate allegations against the Israeli military in 2008-2009, citing the uncertain legal status of the Palestinian Authority.
A lot has changed since then.
Fresh allegations of war crimes have flowed in recent weeks from fighting in Gaza, where Israel responded to a surge in rocket attacks by Hamas militants with air strikes and a ground incursion. The Palestinians this week unexpectedly said they are just one procedural step away from ICC membership.
The legal groundwork for such a move was laid in Nov 2012 when the 193-member U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly approved the de facto recognition of the sovereign state of Palestine by upgrading the Palestinian Authority's observer status to "non-member state" from "entity."
More than 35 years after the infamous suicide-murder of some 900 people - many forced to drink a cyanide-laced grape drink - in Jonestown, Guyana, the cremated remains of nine victims were found in a dilapidated former funeral home in the U.S., officials said Thursday.
The grisly discovery brought back memories of a tragedy that killed hundreds of children and a U.S. congressman and horrified Americans.
After the deaths, bodies of 911 massacre victims were brought to Dover Air Force Base, home to the U.S. military's largest mortuary. Many of the bodies were decomposed and could not be identified. Several cemeteries refused to take them until the Evergreen Cemetery in Oakland, California, stepped forward in 1979 and accepted 409 bodies. The remaining victims were cremated or buried in family cemeteries.
The newly discovered remains were clearly marked, with the names of the deceased included on death certificates, authorities said. But Kimberly Chandler, spokeswoman for the Delaware Division of Forensic Science, declined to release the names of the nine people to The Associated Press. Chandler said officials were working to notify relatives.

North American lions, cheetahs and short-faced bears: Those are just a few fearsome critters from 25,000 years ago paleontologists already might have found in their first excavation of a bizarre northern Wyoming cave in 30 years.
Good fossils also come in small packages: Exquisite rodent bones best examined by microscope, or even snippets of genetic material from long-extinct species, could be in their haul.
The only way in or out of Natural Trap Cave is a 15-foot-wide hole in the ground that's almost impossible to see until you're next to it. Over tens of thousands of years, several thousand insufficiently wary animals plummeted more than 80 feet into the chilly, dim, cathedral-like cavern.
Over the past two weeks, bucket after bucket, by rope and pulley, some 10-20 paleontologists, their assistants and a few spelunking experts have been hauling bones and bone-bearing sediment up into the sunlight. They used screens to sift out tiny remains from the dirt.
