Helaine Olen: Billionaires and millionaires against food stamps (Washington Post)
As for Taylor, she went to jail for her crimes. But the actions of all these millionaires and billionaires - beginning with Trump and including Perdue and Undersander - are far, far worse. Taylor was just one thief. But our billionaire and millionaire overlords and their minions are literally taking food out of a lot of hungry people's mouths. That should be a crime, or at the very least a serious social embarrassment. It's our shame as a nation that it's not.
Helaine Olen: Why Facebook's $5 billion settlement with the FTC won't change a thing (Washington Post)
One question that inevitably arises after news of yet another Facebook misdeed is "How on earth did they think they could get away with that?" Why, for example, would Facebook executives agree to a privacy settlement in 2012 with the Federal Trade Commission and then go on about their business as if it was merely advisory, a yellow light they could choose to run at any time? How could they all but ignore the use of its platforms to manipulate the 2016 U.S. presidential election, not to mention turning a blind eye to how WhatsApp is used to stir up long-standing ethnic hatreds elsewhere?
What is the name of the interstitial programming series of animated musical educational short films, covering grammar, science, economics, history, mathematics, and civics that aired Saturday mornings on ABC?
Schoolhouse Rock! is an American interstitial programming series of animated musical educational short films (and later, videos) that aired during the Saturday morning children's programming block on the U.S. television network ABC. The topics covered included grammar, science, economics, history, mathematics, and civics. The series' original run lasted from 1973 to 1985; it was later revived with both old and new episodes airing from 1993 to 1999. Additional episodes were produced in 2002 and 2009 for direct-to-video release.
Schoolhouse Rock! debuted as a series in January 1973 with "Multiplication Rock," a collection of animated shorts adapting the multiplication tables to songs written by Bob Dorough; Dorough also performed most of the songs, with Grady Tate and Blossom Dearie each performing one during this season. General Foods was the series' first sponsor; later sponsors of the Schoolhouse Rock! segments also included Nabisco, Kenner Toys, Kellogg's, and McDonald's.[citation needed] During the early 1970s, Schoolhouse Rock was one of several short-form animated educational shorts that aired on ABC's children's lineup; others included Time for Timer and The Bod Squad. Of the three, Schoolhouse Rock was the longest-running.

"School House Rock!". The 3 minute animated shorts were originally aired between 1973 and 1985. They only produced 64 of them, so most of the airings were reruns. I don't know if the "School House Rock!" segments were shown once each Saturday or previous to every cartoon show? I suppose the meager series was a tepid response to valid criticism of the worthlessness of the Saturday morning cartoon content? I don't really remember them as that was after the days watched Saturday morning cartoons.

Was it "Schoolhouse Rock"? Kinda after I stopped watching Saturday morning cartoons.

I'm guessing "Schoolhouse Rock" because nothing else comes to mind.
Heating up, as it does in summer, to triple digits the next few days. Good for my tomatoes, for sure.
I watched the trailer for the Mr. Rogers movie, coming out in November, and I was a weepy mess by the end. I miss Mr. Rogers and the world needs more of his kind than ever. Clearly I'm not ready to see the entire movie.

• Basso Ferruccio Furianetto took care of his voice over the years, turning down roles that he felt his voice was not ready for. Conductor Herbert von Karajan once asked him to sing the role of Escamillo, which is a role for a baritone. Immediately, Mr. Furianetto changed the subject to something that he knew Mr. Karajan would want to talk about: "Maestro, did you see the new Porsche that just came out?" Later, Mr. Furianetto said, "That Porsche saved me!"
• When Pierre Monteux started working at the Metropolitan Opera, he decided to buy a shiny Ford touring-car. He paid $300 for the car, which he was proud of at first, although it looked modest when parked beside the luxurious cars of the stars of the Met. However, the car did give Mr. Monteux trouble. One day, as he was driving it, the car developed engine trouble and stopped. Mr. Monteux got out of the car, tipped his hat to it, and walked away, never to return.
Ballet
• Adam Pernell once provided piano accompaniment for David Howard's class when Rudolf Nureyev was taking it. Mr. Pernell was feeling depressed, so he started playing music that was appropriate to his mood - the death scene of Violetta in La Traviata. Mr. Nureyev danced the appropriate steps, but as he danced he mimed Violetta's consumptive cough. From that beginning, a game developed between Mr. Pernell and Mr. Nureyev. Mr. Pernell would play music from an opera, and Mr. Nureyev would dance the steps as the character from the opera would dance them. Each time, Mr. Nureyev got the opera and the character right. Afterwards, Mr. Pernell left class in a wonderful mood.
• Richard Wagner brought his opera Tannhäuser to Paris in 1860, and to make it more popular with Parisians, who love ballet, he inserted a ballet in the first act. Unfortunately, Parisians also love to arrive fashionably late and see a ballet in the second act, so Tannhäuser was forced to close after just three performances.
Beauty
• Marie Wilt was a 300-pound opera singer. In Vienna, where she was born in 1833, she sang the role of Valentino in The Huguenots. As she walked on stage, the character of the Page said the words the script required him to say and announced that she was the most beautiful lady at court. Of course, the audience started laughing, but they quickly stopped laughing when she sang. And given the way she sang, chances are that by the end of the opera some audience members - judging from their enthusiastic applause - thought that she really was the most beautiful woman at court! Ms. Wilt's first teacher was most unusual: an echo. Up on a mountain, she used to sing, listen to her echo, and then correct herself. (Nature can be a wonderful teacher!)
• When Canadian figure skater Toller Cranston served as a judge at a Miss USA beauty pageant, the contestant from New York told him that she loved opera. However, in conversation, he found out that she had never been to the Met and that her favorite opera was Phantom of the Opera, so he told her, "My dear, don't even think about going to La Traviata. You would hate it."

Will & Grace is coming to an end. After an 11-season, 246-episode run, the series will end with the upcoming season (the revival's third and 11th overall) in 2020.
"When NBC had the opportunity to reconnect this amazing cast and creative team, we jumped at the chance," said George Cheeks and Paul Telegdy, Co-Chairmen, NBC Entertainment."The impact and legacy of 'Will & Grace' simply can't be overstated, both as a true game-changer in the portrayal of the LGBTQ community and as one of the finest comedies in television history. A huge thank you to Max, David, Jimmy and a cast that is second to none for their brilliance over an incredible run."
Emmy-winning Will & Grace helped launch the current wave of comedy series revivals on the broadcast networks. It returned to NBC for Season 9 to big ratings, leading to the expansion of the initial order and a two-season renewal for Seasons 10 and 11. Over time, ratings for the praised comedy tapered off, and the upcoming 11th season was expected to be its last. It will launch in midseason.
"We think of the Will & Grace' reboot episodes the way Karen Walker thinks of martinis - 51 is not enough, 53 is too many," added executive producers Max Mutchnick, David Kohan and James Burrows. "That is why, after consulting with the cast, we all have decided this will be the final season of 'Will & Grace.'
Francisco Erwin Galicia, the 18-year-old Dallas-born U.S. citizen detained by border officials, is speaking out about the conditions inside the facility where he was wrongfully held for more than three week. Galicia said conditions were so bad, he considered self-deporting just to get out - even though he has a birth certificate proving he's American-born.
During the 23 days he was in the custody of U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, Galicia was not allowed to shower, he told The Dallas Morning News, which first reported his story.
The teen said he lost 26 pounds during his time in the immigrant detention center, and said officers didn't provide him with enough food. He was crammed into an overcrowded holding area with 60 other men. They slept on the floor with aluminum-foil blankets - some even had to sleep in the bathroom area, he said.
Some of the men were very sick and were bitten by ticks, but were afraid to ask for a doctor because CBP officers told them their stay would start over if they did, Galicia said.
"It was inhumane how they treated us. It got to the point where I was ready to sign a deportation paper just to not be suffering there anymore. I just needed to get out of there," he told the newspaper. "It's one thing to see these conditions on TV and in the news. It's another to go through them."
The Woodstock 50 festival will relocate from upstate New York to Columbia, Maryland in a last-ditch effort to save the beleaguered event, Bloomberg reported. Organizers confirmed to New York Times that the festival will now take place at Merriweather Post Pavilion, which is about an hour's drive from Washington D.C. - and about four-and-a-half hours from the original Woodstock site in Bethel, New York - on August 16th through 18th.
In documents obtained by Bloomberg, Calvin Ball, an executive with Howard County, Maryland, wrote to Greg Peck, one of the Woodstock organizers: "When we heard that there was an opportunity to save this festival and bring a piece of American history to our community this summer, we jumped at the chance. Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia is a jewel of Howard County and one of the top music venues in the nation. It felt like such a natural fit to host a historic festival on our storied stage."
It's still unclear, however, who would actually perform at the relocated festival. The lineup initially featured a mix of original Woodstock vets like Santana, Dead & Co. and Canned Heat, and contemporary stars like Jay-Z, Miley Cyrus and the Killers. Organizers are reportedly in conversation with artists and their representatives, though none are contractually obligated to perform at the show in Maryland.
The documents also note that the festival would be renamed "Woodstock 50 Washington" and that it would primarily serve as a fundraiser for nonprofits dedicated to climate change and voter turnout. Some of the proceeds from ticket sales - which could range from $129 to $595 for various passes - would be donated to organizations like HeadCount. Organizers reportedly also circulated a marketing plan that included a mass e-mail campaign, billboards in Washington, Maryland and Virginia and full-page ads in local newspapers, Bloomberg noted.
Model and TV personality Janice Dickinson on Thursday called a settlement in her defamation lawsuit against the now imprisoned Bill Cosby a victory that brings a measure of justice, but that in the end is only a partial help.
"In reality, nothing can erase the experience and memory of an assault," Dickinson said at a news conference. "Jail is where he belongs. There are not enough years left for him to pay for what he has done to so many, many women."
Dickinson's attorney, Lisa Bloom, said the case was settled for an "epic" amount, though the terms of the agreement keep the exact figure confidential.
The deal allows Dickinson to continue to speak out against Cosby, which she said she intends to do.
For the first time, scientists have discovered how the cannabis plant produces molecules that are highly effective at tackling pain. The team behind the research hope their findings might one day help us create new painkillers that come without the troublesome side effect of potential addiction.
The team, based at the University of Guelph, used a combination of genomics and biochemistry to work out how the cannabis plant makes cannflavin A and cannflavin B, two molecules that are 30 times better at quelling inflammation than aspirin.
The molecules are known as flavonoids and we've been aware of their existence since 1985. However, due to strict regulation on cannabis research, work on these molecules has been limited. Now, thanks to Canada's recent legalization of cannabis, scientists have been able to investigate them unhindered.
The team used biochemical techniques to work out which genes are needed to make the two molecules and which enzymes are involved in the production process. Their findings are published in the journal Phytochemistry.
"Our objective was to better understand how these molecules are made, which is a relatively straightforward exercise these days," said study co-author Professor Tariq Akhtar in a statement. "There are many sequenced genomes that are publicly available, including the genome of Cannabis sativa, which can be mined for information. If you know what you're looking for, one can bring genes to life, so to speak, and piece together how molecules like cannflavins A and B are assembled."
Observations of light coming from a star zipping in orbit around the humongous black hole at the center of our galaxy have provided fresh evidence backing Albert Einstein's 1915 theory of general relativity, astronomers said on Thursday.
Researchers studied a star called S0-2, boasting a mass roughly 10 times larger than the sun, as it travels in an elliptical orbit lasting 16 years around the supermassive black hole called Sagittarius A* residing at the center of the Milky Way 26,000 light years from Earth.
They found that the behavior of the star's light as it escaped the extreme gravitational pull exerted by the black hole, with 4 million times the sun's mass, conformed to Einstein's theory's predictions. The famed theoretical physicist proposed the theory, considered one of the pillars of science, to explain the laws of gravity and their relation to other natural forces.
While Einstein's theory held up in the observations of this star, astronomer Andrea Ghez of the University of California, Los Angeles said it may not be able to fully account for what happens in the most exotic possible gravitational environments like those of black holes. These extraordinarily dense celestial entities exert gravitational fields so strong that no matter or light can escape.
The study detected a co-mingling of space and time near the black hole as predicted by Einstein's theory. Isaac Newton's 17th century law of universal gravitation could not account for these observations, Ghez said.
When archaeologists discovered the remains of a woman in a Viking graveyard in Denmark, an axe near her skeleton told them that she may have been a fighter. But closer examination of both the weapon and her burial revealed something unexpected: She was no Viking.
Rather, the woman was Slavic, and likely came from a region in Eastern Europe that is now Poland, representatives of Poland's Ministry of Science and Higher Education said in a statement.
A coin from the cemetery, on the Danish island of Langeland, revealed that the burial site is about 1,000 years old, according to the statement. The woman's grave was the only one that held a weapon.
Throughout history and across the globe, women have wielded weapons. In recent years, archaeologists have found evidence that some Viking women were buried with weapons. But in many of those cases, there were no human remains in the graves, and the gender of the former occupants was inferred from the presence of jewelry and other objects that typically belonged to women, Leszek Gardela, an archaeologist with the University of Bonn in Germany and the University of Bergen in Norway, said in the statement.
However, the Slavic woman's skeleton was still lying in the grave. The skeleton showed no obvious injuries that would have indicated how she died, Gardela said. The axe resembled similar tools from the southern Baltic - a region that includes modern countries bordering the Baltic Sea, such as Poland, Germany and Lithuania - and the chambered construction of her grave is reminiscent of cemetery structures from that part of the world during the Middle Ages.
