From Jody
During his campaign, reporters often quoted President Bush as saying "I will
run the government like a business."
Careful analysis now reveals he probably
said, "I will 'ruin' the government like a business".
What a difference
a little "i" makes in the history of the world.

Sabotage To Become Legal?
Media companies would be allowed to sabotage Napster-style networks to prevent songs, movies and other copyrighted materials from being swapped over the Internet under
a bill introduced in Congress on Thursday.
The bill would permit recording companies and other copyright holders to hack onto networks to thwart users looking to download free music, and would protect them from lawsuits from users.
Although Congress has little time to debate the bill before the August recess, sponsor Rep. Howard Berman, a California Democrat, said the measure was necessary because
the decentralized systems were impossible to shut down.
"No legislation can eradicate the problem of peer-to-peer piracy. However, enabling copyright creators to take action to prevent an infringing file from being shared via
P2P (peer-to-peer) is an important first step," Berman said in remarks on the floor of the House of Representatives.
Many large record labels have already resorted to a method known as "spoofing," where they hire firms to distribute "decoy" files that are empty or do not work in order to
frustrate would-be downloaders of movies and music.
Additionally, sources have said the major recording companies, like Bertelsmann AG BMG, EMI Group Plc, Vivendi Universal and Sony Corp are considering taking
a new tack by suing individuals who use the services, rather than the companies that host them.

Cocaine Cited in Death
John Entwistle
John Entwistle, the 57-year-old bass player for the rock band The Who, died from a heart attack caused by cocaine use, the Clark County coroner said Thursday.
Coroner Ron Flud ruled the death accidental and said it was not an overdose.
"The heart attack we believe was brought on by the significant amount of cocaine" that was in Entwistle's system at the time of death, he said.
"Cocaine is a different animal," Flud said. "It's not like alcohol. There's no way we can put a number on it. You've got a lethal drug on board at the time you have a bad heart. That's a bad combination."
Entwistle's death was caused when cocaine caused the contraction of coronary arteries that were already damaged by heart disease, Flud said.
After the death, a musician in Entwistle's own band said he had been on medication for a heart condition.

Hosting 'One Hit Wonders'
William Shatner
William Shatner says musicians shouldn't take offense if they're featured on his new VH1 documentary show, "One Hit Wonders."
The "Star Trek" star, who has poked fun at his own cover versions of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and "Mr. Tambourine Man," said the show is a tribute to unforgettable tunes by artists
who never repeated the same success.
"In the world that we inhabit, having one hit is a lot better than having no hits," Shatner told The Associated Press.
Despite the show's lighthearted approach, he added, it illustrates the difficulty of achieving success in the music industry.
Derived from a five-part VH1 special, the new half-hour show will debut next Monday on the music channel with new episodes scheduled weekly. About four songs will be
featured on each show. Special episodes will focus on disco, heavy metal, new wave, TV themes, novelty songs and celebrity singers.

or so to make his formal proposal.

VH1 Show Starts In October
`Liza and David'
Liza Minnelli and new husband, David Gest, will be staging a "Cabaret" at their house — and you're invited.
Trying to imitate the ratings magic of sister channel MTV's "The Osbournes," VH1 is offering its own version of a celebrity home
invasion television series, with Minnelli and Gest in their Manhattan penthouse.
At a news conference Thursday, the Academy Award-winning actress, who said she was more nervous about meeting reporters than opening
her home to the public, looked trim and healthy in clingy black slacks, blouse and long jacket.
The couple's show will emphasize music, with Minnelli singing solo and joining entertainer-friends in duets, Gest said. It's set to begin in October.
While no performers are confirmed, he suggested they would include such musically diverse artists as Mary J. Blige, Alan Jackson, Dr. Dre, Al Green and Barry White.
Minnelli, 56, and Gest, 48, said they are willing to open up their kitchen, dining room and music room.
"I won't let anybody into the bedroom or the bathroom," Minnelli said.
Will the public be interested in "Liza and David"?
"If they like it, great. If it doesn't happen, we go onward," Gest said.

'Heartbroken' Over Lowe Leaving
Martin Sheen
Martin Sheen said he is heartbroken over the impending departure of "West Wing" co-star Rob Lowe, who is quitting the Emmy-winning NBC series over a salary dispute.
"I was shocked and dismayed, frankly," Sheen told reporters. "And disappointed, but for selfish reasons because we keep talking about the next four years as the next administration."
But Sheen, who plays President Josiah Bartlet on the Emmy-winning White House drama, isn't entirely surprised.
"We saw something coming but we didn't know it was such as it was, you know. We knew there were some contract disputes, but I never get into that with a fellow actor because frankly
it's none of my business," he said. "Everyone's entitled to go for whatever they can get. I did, certainly."
Sheen recently renegotiated his contract to triple his salary to $300,000 per episode, according to Variety magazine.

Last Year Or Bigger Bucks Ahoy?
'Raymond'
"Everybody Loves Raymond" creator Phil Rosenthal says there's a chance the upcoming seventh season of his hit CBS show could be the show's last.
CBS' deal for the series expires in May, as does star Ray Romano's contract. Most industry insiders believe there's no way CBS will let "Raymond" slip away, or
that Rosenthal or Romano would give up the huge paycheck an eighth season would bring.
But Rosenthal, who's still celebrating his show's 11 Emmy nominations, insists there are no guarantees.
Rosenthal said Romano's opinion on the matter will be key. Equally important will be whether Rosenthal and his writing staff feel there are still interesting
stories to be told. A decision on an eighth season would have to be made this winter.
Some industry insiders no doubt will see Rosenthal's comments as posturing in advance of renegotiations for an eighth or ninth season of "Raymond."
But Rosenthal has proved before he's not just in it for the money: After "Raymond" premiered, he gave back $16 million from a production deal with
Disney rather than ditch the show he loved.

Visited In Liverpool
Queen Elizabeth II
Queen Elizabeth II made two stops in Liverpool on Thursday devoted to the Beatles, opening a new 32 million-pound ($48 million) passenger terminal at John Lennon Airport and attending an exhibit of paintings by Paul McCartney.
At the airport, the queen met with Yoko Ono, the widow of the murdered Beatle, and viewed a life-size bronze statue of Lennon, complete with his trademark round spectacles and swept back hair.
Dressed in an aquamarine coat and hat, the queen chatted to Ono and sculptor Tom Murphy, creator of the Lennon statue.
After a short address by airport chairman Robert Hough, the queen unveiled a commemorative plaque and signed the airport visitor's book, before leaving in her Bentley for a meeting with McCartney
at Liverpool's Walker Art Gallery.
The 60-year-old former Beatle showed the monarch around a display of 70 of his largely abstract paintings and sculptures, saying afterward, "I think she liked them. She said they were very colorful,
and I took that as a great compliment."
Curators had removed three canvases of the queen herself, one of which was entitled, "The queen after her first cigarette."
McCartney, who was accompanied by his new wife, Heather Mills, said he would have been happy to show them to the monarch. "They are very affectionate, and I think she has a good sense of humor," he said.

Touring Copy Of Declaration Of Independence
Norman Lear
Norman Lear, among the most influential television producers of all time, says his best production is yet to come. It won't be a TV show, though. It's a gift from the heart.
"I am building a show," said Lear. "It's a revival, a red, white and blue revival ... that will get people to their feet, witnessing to the fact that they realize they matter as Americans."
The words, images and ideas tumble out of Lear with an energy and enthusiasm that appear to give lie to the fact he turns 80 on Saturday.
The man who gave America "All in the Family" now wants to share with Americans their Declaration of Independence. He and a partner bought a rare copy of the 1776 document two years
ago for $8.14 million. The broadside forms the centerpiece of a traveling tribute.
His career as a producer, director, comedy writer and screenwriter brought him four Emmys, a Peabody, induction into the Television Academy Hall of Fame — and the National Medal
of Arts, given in 1999 by then President Clinton, who said Lear "has held up a mirror to American society and changed the way we look at it."
Lear's legacy also includes "Sanford and Son," "Maude," Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" and "The Jeffersons," which provided unvarnished views of people and issues not previously
seen on network television. He created Archie Bunker, an outspoken, blue-collar bigot, and raised such issues as abortion, homosexuality and anti-Semitism.

performing in wild outfits and funky hats designed by Ivy Supersonic. In their downtime, they e-mailed pals to say they are engaged. But Lee's rep, Beth Katz, denied it,
although she said "they are wonderfully in love, living together and have a wonderful relationship. They are working on Mayte's new album and will perform in New York
next Tuesday at the World." Meanwhile, Lee is fuming over the way Pam criticized him Tuesday on "Larry King Live," an appearance he sees as "a clear attempt to garner
attention for her new column set to appear in Jane magazine,." "I am extremely concerned that she is using our children and our long-ended past relationship to garner
attention to her public career. I love my children and, for that reason alone, I stand by my prior statements . . . that I refuse to drag them into a public battle that
should be, and is being, sorted out privately through the courts."

Seeks Divorce After Less Than a Year
Jennifer Lopez
Actress-singer Jennifer Lopez filed for divorce on Thursday from her dancer husband Cris Judd, citing irreconcilable differences after less than a year of marriage.
The divorce papers were filed in Los Angeles Superior Court the day after Lopez celebrated her 32nd birthday. Lawyers said the pair had also reached a financial settlement agreement. Details were not disclosed.
Judd was the second husband of the Latina diva, whose music and movie career took off last year with both the hit film "The Wedding Planner" and her chart-topping album "J.Lo." Her first marriage, to Ojani Noa,
ended in divorce in 1998 after about a year.
But the actress, regarded as one of Hollywood's sexiest celebrities, has recently been linked by tabloid media reports to actor Ben Affleck, her co-star in her next movie "Gigli."
Bronx-born Lopez has two more movies lined up this year and is also recording her next album, her publicist said. In the past two years she has also launched her own clothing line and opened a Cuban restaurant
in Pasadena, near Los Angeles, hiring her first ex-husband Ojani Noa to run it.

Summertime Commuting In Japan
Beer Train
Summertime commuting in Japan in high heat and humidity and huge crowds can be particularly stressful, but one train company has found a way to help its passengers relax.
Customers who book a seat on Fuji Kyuko's Friday night beer run can sit back and spend a two-hour trip being served as much locally brewed beer as they can drink.
The beer train plies a route near Mount Fuji, some 100 km (60 miles) southwest of Tokyo, normally used by businesspeople and students.
However, beer-drinking passengers should take advantage of stops at stations along the route because the train has no toilets.

The Value Of A Woman
Pakistan
Four murderers face execution on Saturday in Pakistan after a storm of protest scuttled a deal by which they sought to escape hanging by selling young daughters into marriage to elderly relatives of their victims.
A district mayor in the city of Mianwali in Punjab province said the bridegrooms -- one aged 77 and the other 55 -- married the 15- and 14-year-old daughters of two of the murderers on
Wednesday morning, but divorced them later the same day on the advice of local elders.
Newspaper reports said the family of two murdered men in the village of Abbakhel had demanded $200,000 and 20 young brides to agree to pardons for the murderers.
The village council mediated a compromise by which the victims' family agreed to take eight unmarried young women and $133,000.
"The houses of the brides presented a mourning scene as shrieks and cries were heard when the Nikah was performed," the paper said, referring to the marriage solemnization ceremony.
Islamic laws introduced by former military dictator President Zia-ul-Haq provide for convicts -- even those on death row -- to be pardoned if the victim's family agrees to accept cash
compensation, called Qisas. Providing women as compensation is not allowed.
It was the second time this month the Supreme Court has intervened in a women's rights case in Punjab.
It ordered a similar probe after media reported a gang-rape of a 30-year-old (sic) woman on June 22 carried out on the orders of a village council in another Punjab village to avenge
her brother's affair (sic) with a more powerful family.
The incident sparked national and international controversy and highlighted the uneasy co-existence of traditional law alongside Islamic and civil law.

Chagall's 'Over Vitebsk'
The Marc Chagall painting stolen last year from New York City's Jewish Museum went back on display at its home at the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.
The 1914 work "Study for 'Over Vitebsk'" — valued at $1 million — had been on loan to the Jewish Museum as part of an exhibit, "Marc Chagall: Early Work From Russian
Collections," when it was stolen sometime after a museum reception on June 7, 2001.
Earlier this year, an undeliverable package was opened for identification at a postal center in Topeka, Kan. Workers there found the painting and called the FBI after
noticing stickers from several museums on the back.
Experts identified the painting in February, and its owner — an unidentified, private St. Petersburg collector — requested that it be returned to the Russian Museum, where it
had been part of the collection since 1992. It was returned last week, and formally unveiled Wednesday.
Chagall was born in Vitebsk, in what was then czarist Russia and is today independent Belarus, and returned briefly there at the end of World War I to create many of his key works.
