Eric Stonestreet, the "Modern Family" better half -- and now husband -- to Jesse Tyler Ferguson's character "Mitch," says that he is shocked how many anti-gay conservatives want to get their picture taken with him. The 42-year old Emmy Award-winning actor told the Huffington Post yesterday that at a recent White House Correspondents Dinner -- which has become a who's who of Hollywood elites -- Rick Santorum asked Stonestreet to pose for a photo with him.
"Rick Santorum wanted a picture with me," Stonestreet told Huff Post Live on Wednesday. "It was at a time when he was publicly saying, 'Gay marriage, gay marriage [is wrong],' and I'm like, 'You know, I can't do it.' It was with him and his kids or something like that, and I said, 'I'd be happy to take a picture with the kids, but I can't just be in a picture with [Santorum.]'"
Stonestreet was also asked if he thinks "Modern Family" has played a role in advancing same-sex marriage and equality for LGBT people.
"President Obama mentioned in an interview like three weeks ago, just casually, that Michelle and the kids watch Mitch and Cam and they're in tears," Stonestreet told HuffPo's Caitlyn Becker. "To hear the leader of the free world, the president of the United States, say that and to know we have that sort of reach with people and that the people in power and leadership are watching the show [is incredible]."

More art works have been found at the Munich apartment of the late collector Cornelius Gurlitt, including a sculpture apparently by Edgar Degas and another that could be by Auguste Rodin, the task force investigating the pieces' origin said Thursday.
A "small number" of further works was found at Gurlitt's apartment by officials securing his estate, the task force said in a statement. It declined to elaborate on the number.
Experts are now working to identify the pieces after the court-appointed administrator of Gurlitt's estate asked them to determine whether the works were stolen by the Nazis.
Shortly before he died, Gurlitt reached a deal with the German government under which hundreds of works he owned would be checked for possible Nazi-era pasts while staying in government hands. Authorities say that deal is binding on any heirs.

Casey Kasem's body was taken from Tacoma, Washington's Gaffney Funeral Home to Canada, a Gaffney worker confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter on July 23, but his distraught relatives don't have any specific information on the whereabouts of his remains a month after his death.
"It looks like it is the case [that Kasem is in Canada]," says family spokesman Danny Deraney. "But we are not 100 percent sure. Kerri, Mike and Julie [Kasem] deserve the right to know where their father is buried. Nobody is asking to negotiate. It's a right they, along with his family and friends, deserve."
Asked why Casey's widow, Jean Kasem (who prefers to be called Jeannie), might be hiding his father's corpse from his children, Mike Kasem tells THR that she's "demonstrated what we have known for 30 years: She's bat-sh*t crazy."
Mike Kasem also poses 10 questions regarding the sincerity of his stepmother's love for his father: "If she loved him, then where was she at the end of his life when we reached out to have her by his side. Why would she leave his remains for weeks before making a move? Why would she recite scripture while hurling raw hamburger meat at my sister? Why would she cut him off from everyone he loves, friends included & are we all a**holes? Why would she rip him out of a care facility at 2 a.m. against doctors' orders to take him on a road trip he is not equipped to handle? Why would she list their residence on the death certificate for the last 18 years as 'Jerusalem, Israel'? Why would she play actress, fall to the floor in front of cameras outside the courtroom, screaming, 'They have blood on their hands,' and then go hang out with her boyfriend? Underground stores of water in the southwestern United States have receded dramatically amid ongoing drought that has parched states from Oklahoma to the Pacific Coast and is costing California billions in lost crops and jobs, a new study shows.
The study released Thursday by the University of California, Irvine, shows that groundwater in the Colorado River basin has dropped by 40 million acre-feet over the past five years, the equivalent of two of the nation's largest reservoirs.
"If drought conditions like this continue, there is a possibility we will entirely deplete our groundwater storage," said researcher Stephanie Castle, the report's author.
As drought conditions have continued, the underground water in the basin - not to be confused with the water in the river itself or the huge reservoirs it feeds - receded at a far faster rate than expected, Castle said.

The biggest U.S. grain export association called on China on Thursday to rescind its latest restriction of a GMO corn strain, saying the new demand was unworkable.
Trade sources said China issued the new requirement affecting distiller's dried grains (DDG), a popular livestock feed that is a by-product of corn ethanol manufacturing.
Traders say China is demanding certification that DDG imports do not contain the MIR 162 GMO strain. Grain traders say the U.S. government does not issue zero tolerance certification.
Sleight said China had also made the new requirements effective immediately, causing serious disruptions.

A divided federal appeals court on Thursday upheld a U.S. Food and Drug Administration policy allowing the use of various antibiotics in animal feed, even if such use might endanger the public health.
Reversing a lower court ruling, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York said the FDA was empowered to reject two citizen challenges to its policy, which discourages but does not ban the use of penicillin and some tetracyclines in feed for chickens, cows and pigs, even if they are not sick.
Critics and some scientists say the prolonged, widespread use of the feed to promote weight gain in animals can foster "superbugs," exposing humans who contact or eat the animals to antibiotic-resistant bacteria. They said the FDA should have followed through on its 1977 proposal to ban the feed entirely.
Writing for a 2-1 appeals court majority, however, Circuit Judge Gerard Lynch said the FDA deserved deference, even if agency officials had scientific concern about the feed's safety.

Elsa Ramirez already had lost two brothers to violence in this remote Caribbean region when co-workers handling clandestine cocaine flights from South America murdered her husband four months ago.
Then the killers came looking for her.
Ramirez had seen Facebook messages and heard from relatives that mothers travelling to the United States with children would be allowed to stay if they made it across the border, so she took off for the North with her 8-year-old, Sandra, and 5-year-old Cesar, named for his dead father.
Two weeks and many thousands of miles later, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement flight brought Ramirez back to the badlands of Honduras in Colon province, still fearing her husband's killers and now lacking a plan for survival.
Overwhelmed by unaccompanied minors and women with children crossing illegally, U.S. authorities have stepped up deportations back to Central America. Ramirez was one of 58 women and children who returned last week on a U.S. flight to San Pedro Sula, considered one of the most dangerous cities in the world.

An Alabama man who went in to a hospital last month for a circumcision awoke after surgery to find his penis had been amputated, his lawyer said on Thursday.
Johnny Lee Banks Jr., 56, said in a lawsuit filed in state court earlier this week that no one at the Princeton Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama, had told him why it had been necessary to remove his penis.
Banks, who is married and does not work due to a disability, did not recall the precise date of the incident but believed it occurred in June, his attorney said.
"We intend to defend all counts aggressively," Kate DeWitt Darden, spokeswoman for Baptist Health System, said in a statement.

For the first time in more than 30 years, paleontologists are about to revisit one of North America's most remarkable troves of late Pleistocene fossils: The bones of tens of thousands of animals piled at least 30 feet deep at the bottom of a sinkhole-type cave.
Natural Trap Cave in north-central Wyoming is 85 feet deep and almost impossible to see until you're standing right next to it. Over tens of thousands of years, many, many animals - including now-extinct mammoths, short-faced bears, American lions and American cheetahs - shared the misfortune of not noticing the 15-foot-wide opening until they were plunging to their deaths.
Now, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management is preparing to reopen a metal grate over the opening to offer scientists what may be their best look yet at the variety of critters that roamed the foothills of the Bighorn Mountains during the planet's last glacial period around 25,000 years ago.
The cave is perpetually cold and clammy, with temperatures in the mid-40s and humidity around 98 percent. Even Bureau of Land Management regional paleontologist Brent Breithaupt, who isn't one to get the willies from lots of animal bones, describes it as a tad creepy.
The remote site is exceptionally well preserved. It's far too challenging and dangerous to have been trammeled in by casual spelunkers. The Bureau of Land Management installed the grate to keep people and animals out in the 1970s.
