In 2006, South Dakota instituted almost a total ban on abortions. Bill Napoli, a South Dakota State Senator, supported this ban, saying that women should not be allowed to have abortions even if they get pregnant for "simple rape." (He did say that he would make an exception for a religious virgin who gets pregnant from a brutalizing rape.) Cartoonist Stephanie McMillan saw Mr. Napoli's words as expressing a belief that women shouldn't be allowed to make decisions for themselves, so she created a cartoon in which a woman character telephones Mr. Napoli when she is asked to make a decision about which salad dressing to use - the character asks Mr. Napoli, "Roasted pepper vinaigrette or honey mustard?" The cartoon included Mr. Napoli's work and home telephone numbers, which many other women used to call him. One woman asked him whether her bra and panties should match; another woman asked him whether she should use tampons or pads.
Fashion maven Sunny Chapman used to go to abortion clinics to protest - as a member of Satanists 4 Life - along with fellow activists Karen Elliott and Monika LaVey. At their demon-strations they wore devil horns and devil costumes and held signs saying such things as "DON'T ABORT YOUR FETUS - IT COULD BE THE ANTI-CHRIST" and "PRO-LIFE IS PRO-SATAN." This usually made ordinary pro-life protesters uncomfortable enough to leave the immediate vicinity.
New York City's Guerrilla Girls use posters to protest art exhibits dominated by male artists. One poster asked, "When Racism & Sexism Are No Longer Fashionable, What Will Your Art Collection Be Worth?" True artists, the Guerilla Girls dress up in gorilla masks to gain publicity for their cause.
Absolut Vodka once asked lesbian cartoonist Kris Kovick to draw a cartoon to be used in its ads. She drew a cartoon for "Absolut Hurl," which depicted a woman vomiting while holding a vodka bottle. Not surprisingly, Absolut Vodka decided not to use the cartoon in its ads.

In many ways, Theodor Geisel, who is better known as Dr. Seuss, was a lucky man. In the 1920s, he created a cartoon for the humor magazine Judge. The cartoon showed a knight in armor lying in bed while a ferocious dragon hovered above him. The caption of the cartoon has the knight referring to a then-common insecticide called Flit: "Darn it all, another Dragon. And just after I'd sprayed the entire castle with Flit!" This cartoon resulted in a contract for Mr. Geisel to create advertisements for Flit because Grace Cleaves saw the cartoon at a hairdresser's shop, liked it, and convinced her husband, a Flit advertising executive, to hire Mr. Geisel. How lucky was Mr. Geisel? When creating the cartoon, he could have used two insecticides: Flit or Fly Tox. He flipped a coin to decide which to use, and Flit won. In addition, Mrs. Cleaves' regular hairdresser's shop did not have Judge. Because her regular hairdresser's shop was busy, she went to another hairdresser's shop, where she saw the issue of Judge that contained Mr. Geisel's cartoon.
In 1934, artist Salvador Dali designed a window that featured nude mannequins for New York department store Bonwit Teller. Of course, the professional window dressers preferred mannequins wearing the clothing that the store sold, so when Mr. Dali left they put clothing on the mannequins. When Mr. Dali returned and saw the alterations to his window display, he made a major display of temperament, including throwing a bathtub used in the display through a plate-glass store window so that the bathtub made an unscheduled stop on the Fifth Avenue sidewalk. Shortly afterward, Mr. Dali made an unscheduled stop in jail. According to world-famous window dresser Simon Doonan, this situation was win-win for everybody. Mr. Dali further increased his reputation as an eccentric art genius and the store received lots of fabulous free publicity.
Filp Wilson was most famous for creating the role of Geraldine Jones, but he also created Reverend Leroy. What was the name of the good Rev's house of worship?
The Flip Wilson Show is an hour-long variety show that originally aired in the US on NBC from September 17, 1970 to June 27, 1974. The show starred American comedian Flip Wilson; the program was one of the first American television programs starring a black person in the title role to become highly successful with a white audience. Specifically, it was the first successful network variety series starring an African American. During its first two seasons, its Nielsen ratings made it the nation's second most watched show.
The show consisted of many skits in a 60-minute variety format. It also broke new ground in American television by using a "theatre-in-the-round" stage format, with the audience seated on all sides of a circular performance area (with some seats located behind the sketch sets on occasion).
Wilson was most famous for creating the role of Geraldine Jones, a sassy, modern woman who had a boyfriend named Killer (who, when not in prison, was at the pool hall). Flip also created the role of Reverend Leroy, who was the minister of the Church of What's Happening Now! New parishioners were wary of coming to the church as it was hinted that Reverend Leroy was a con artist. Wilson popularized the catchphrase "The Devil made me do it!".

Church Of What's Happening Now. I couldn't recall the answer without looking it up, although my family's TV was tuned to the Flip Wilson Show 'religiously' on Thursday nights, at least those Thursdays when my brother's H.S. team didn't have a wrestling meet. Flip's show had very high ratings at first, but eventually variety show fatigue set in with the viewers and it only lasted 4 seasons before the ratings fell and it was cancelled.

"This soundtrack represents probably the most difficult musical challenge I have faced: adhere to the limitations of the SNES' SPC-700 synth chip, while evoking both the Final Fantasy 6 / Earthbound sound AND the haunting Old West film scores of Ennio Morricone and Luis Bacalov. It took over two years to complete, and now you can enjoy it wherever you are!

Last year, not a single major studio movie included a transgender character, according to GLAAD. On Thursday morning, the LGBTQ media advocacy organization released its annual Studio Responsibility Index report tracking LGBTQ inclusion in major studio films.
After analyzing the 118 films released in 2019 by the eight major studios (Lionsgate, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, STX Films, United Artists Releasing, Universal Pictures, Walt Disney Studios and Warner Bros.), the organization found that the percentage of LGBTQ characters of color dropped dramatically for the second year running.
"America's greatest cultural export are our films," GLAAD President Sarah Kate Ellis told The Times. "And we have the ability to enter markets and countries where it's still illegal to be LGBTQ, and tell LGBTQ stories out of Hollywood. And so this is one missed opportunity after another."
Being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer remains illegal in 70 countries around the world, even as a modern civil rights movement is in the midst of going global.
"We are in this long-needed, much-necessary Black Lives Matter movement and moment," Ellis said. "And it's hit a crescendo. This is a time to double down on telling people of color's stories, both queer and cis."
White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany (R-Fabulist) said during a Thursday press briefing that "science should not stand in the way of" schools fully reopening for the upcoming academic year, later blasting coverage of her comments as a "case study in media bias."
Asked about President Donald Trump (R-Unfit)'s message to parents as some schools opt to go fully online in the coming weeks, McEnany said "the president has said unmistakably that he wants schools to open."
"And I was just in the Oval talking to him about that," she said. "When he says open, he means open in full, kids being able to attend each and every day in their school. The science should not stand in the way of this."
She added that the U.S. is an "outlier" among western nations in terms of getting kids back to school, adding, "the science is on our side here and we encourage for localities and states to just simply follow the science, open our schools."
"It's very damaging to our children," she said. "There's a lack of reporting of abuse, there's mental depressions that are not addressed, suicidal ideations that are not addressed when students are not in school. Our schools are extremely important, they're essential, and they must reopen."
A small Wisconsin liberal arts college hosting a campaign visit by Vice President Mike Pence (R-Mother) told Pence that he and everyone attending his speech inside a campus building must wear a mask and maintain a 6-foot distance between one another, in accordance with the college's protocols for slowing the coronavirus.
The president of Ripon College also distanced the private school from the closed-door event on Friday, saying in an email to the campus community that there was a "mixed response" to the news of Pence's visit and that the school wasn't organizing the event but was merely renting a room to the campaign.
Pence's campaign staff did not immediately respond to questions about whether Pence would wear a mask and abide by the protocols as requested. Pence last month encouraged the wearing of a mask, and he wore one at a Louisiana campaign stop earlier this week before taking it off to give his speech. Pence didn't consistently wear masks earlier this year, drawing criticism following a stop at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.
Pence plans to speak Friday at Ripon College, a private school of about 800 students about 90 miles north of Milwaukee, before doing a farm tour and hosting a roundtable discussion in western Wisconsin. The city of Ripon, which touts itself as the birthplace of the Republican Party, is in the Green Bay media market, which is a critical swing area for President Donald Trump (R-Grifter) in this battleground state.
Argentinian health officials are scrambling to understand how nearly every crew member of a ship which spent 35 days at sea were found to have contracted coronavirus upon returning to land.
All 61 sailors aboard the trawler, Echizen Maru, tested negative for the virus upon departure from Buenos Aires in late May.
They were then flown to the Ushuaia, a typical jumping-off point for Antarctic voyages nicknamed "the end of the world", where they were quarantined in a hotel for two weeks before setting sail.
After weeks at sea, some crew members started to display symptoms typical to Covid-19, and the ship returned to port.
All but four aboard the ship tested positive upon their return, local health authorities in the Tierra del Fuego province said on Monday. Two have been hospitalised in Ushuaia Regional Hospital, one of whom is receiving oxygen.
The US could soon face another shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) and run out of items like gloves, goggles, and body bags.
Health and Human Services Department documents obtained by NBC News show that national bodies in charge of distributing such equipment have vastly depleted stocks.
The documents, as well as testimony from hospitals and healthcare workers, point to a national stockpile that appears to be running low of key equipment, and that did not ship anywhere close to what authorities around the country said they needed.
The documents show that both the Strategic National Stockpile, a national stockpile of equipment for public-health emergencies, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have 900,000 gloves left in reserve after having shipped 82.7 million of them to states and other health authorities.
That 82.7 million represents jut 30% of the figure requested by authorities across the country, NBC News reported.
Germany's federal and regional governments on Thursday agreed on tougher, more targeted lockdown measures to contain local outbreaks and ward off the threat of a second coronavirus wave.
The new rules allow for a ban on travel "in and out of the affected areas" to limit the spread of the virus, according to an agreement adopted by federal and local authorities.
It comes as countries across the world are reimposing curbs on public life in response to a surge in new infections.
Germany, which has been less affected by the pandemic than many of its neighbours, aims to respond to new clusters with hyper-local lockdowns and rapid contact tracing and testing, rather than blanket lockdowns of whole towns or districts.
When microbiologist Jared Leadbeater returned to his office for the first time in months after a work trip, he found something strange. A cream-coloured manganese carbonate (MnCO3) compound, coating glassware he'd left soaking in his sink, had turned dark. Something had stolen some of its electrons.
"I thought, 'What is that?'" said Leadbeater, a researcher at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). The dark substance was a form of manganese oxide - a product that forms when manganese ions lose electrons and undergo a reaction called oxidation.
But something had to be initiating the reaction - an electron thief.
"I started to wonder if long-sought-after microbes might be responsible," Leadbeater explained, "so we systematically performed tests to figure that out."
To check if this was really happening due to a biological process, Leadbeater and his team coated more jars with MnCO3 and sterilised some them using scorching steam (MnCO3 is known to be stable in these conditions).
For fish inhabiting the immense darkness of the deep sea, being ultra-black offers great camouflage in a fish-eat-fish world. Scientists studying some of these exotic creatures now have unraveled the secret behind their extreme color.
These fish - like the fangtooth, the Pacific blackdragon, the anglerfish and the black swallower - have modified the shape, size and packing of the pigment in their skin to the point that it reflects less than 0.5% of light that hits it, researchers said on Thursday.
They studied 16 species that fit this definition of ultra-black. These spanned six different orders of fish - large groupings that each have a shared evolutionary history - indicating this modification evolved independently in all of them.
"In the deep, open ocean, there is nowhere to hide and a lot of hungry predators," said zoologist Karen Osborn of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History in Washington, a co-author of the research published in the journal Current Biology. "An animal's only option is to blend in with the background."
