Tom Danehy: Tom checks in with a Pima County sheriff and his metal life away from the badge(Tucson Weekly)
It has been said that the most successful members of the law-enforcement community are those who find a way not to take the job home with them. If that's the case, Bob may be the most successful cop-type guy ever because as soon as he clocks out, he turns into Heavy Metal Man-part roadie, part groupie (in a strictly platonic, non-gender-specific way), part hard-rock historian. But mostly, he's a big-time fan.
THE DATA OR THE HUNCH (Intelligent Life)
More and more decisions, from the music business to the sports field, are being delegated to data. But where does that leave our intuition? Ian Leslie figures it out.
Grace Ethel Cecile Rosalie "Gracie" Allen (July 26, 1895 - August 27, 1964), was an American comedienne who became internationally famous as the zany partner and comic foil of husband George Burns. For contributions to the television industry, Gracie Allen was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6672 Hollywood Boulevard. The team of Burns and Allen was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1988.
Gracie Allen was born in San Francisco, California, to George and Molly (nee Darragh) Allen, who were of Irish Catholic extraction. She made her first appearance on stage at age three and was given her first role on the radio by Eddie Cantor. She was educated at the Star of the Sea Convent School and during that time became a talented dancer.
She soon began performing Irish folk dances with her three sisters, who were billed as "The Four Colleens". In 1909, Allen joined her sister, Bessie, as a vaudeville performer. At a performance in 1922, Allen met George Burns and the two formed a comedy act. The two were married on January 7, 1926, in Cleveland, Ohio.
Gracie Allen was born with heterochromia, giving her two different color eyes; one blue and one green.

That's Gracie Allen, spousal unit of George Burns. Their TV show was
ahead of the curve.

Why that's the wonderfully zany

I remember one show (I'm old) where George and Gracie went into an appliance store that was having a terrific sale and Gracie got the salesman SO confused...
She said she'd buy the washing machine, thus saving $50 and the dryer, saving another $45 and then use that $95 to buy the refrigerator and use the $$$ from the savings of that - to pay for the washer and dryer.
She walked out with all three appliances and paid nothing.
Her hare-brained double-talk was SO convincing and hilarious: it made perfect sense - in Gracie's own inimitable way.
Gracie Allen was a comedic treasure.
Deborah said:
Would that be Grace Allen, married to George Burns, AKA Burns & Allen?
Just a WAG. I don't recall my parents listening to or watching their shows.
Unusually cool here - just right for moving a cubic yard of topsoil as Operation Buh-Bye Lawn continues.

Kevin K. in Washington, DC answered:
Why, that's Gracie Allen, wife to George Burns. Together, they were Burns &
Allen.
George responded:
Marty, the celebrity in the photo is Gracie Allen - the wacky "Better Half" of George Burns!
Lois Of Oregon said:
George and Gracie were such a cute couple.
Dale of Diamondy Springs, Norcali replied:
Gracie Allen was a heterochromiacal, illogical logician. A marvelously brilliant and gifted comedienne was she. I was always fascinated by the storytelling and timing between her and George Burns. Even as a little scampy tyke.
Jeb Bush suggesting that "people need to work longer hours" in order to grow the economy. Spoken like the true Plutocrat that he be.
DJ Useo answered:
Why, that's Gracie Allen, of the phenomenal comedy duo, George Burns & Gracie Allen.
I love to watch their 1950's tv show, & also listen to their golden age radio shows.
I didn't discover them until a couple years ago, but now I wonder why they were
not aired all those years.
The cast is great. I love the gentle style of humor. & Gracie cracks me up even in repeat viewings.
I have the entire I love Lucy series, & like them much, but George & Gracie are my faves.

Country singer Willie Nelson was named on Thursday as the 2015 recipient of the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, joining the likes of Paul McCartney, Billy Joel and Carole King in one of the highest U.S. music honors.
The Library of Congress said Nelson, whose career spans six decades, would be given the prize, which recognizes lifetime achievement, at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., in November.
Librarian of Congress James Billington described Nelson in a statement as a "musical explorer" who has "helped make country music one of the most universally beloved forms of American artistic expression."
Nelson, 82, said he was honored to be chosen for the award, which was established in 2007 and named for composers George and Ira Gershwin.

Former resident George W. Bush (R-Bloody Hands) charged $100,000 to speak at a charity fundraiser for U.S. military veterans severely wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan, and former First Lady Laura "Pickles" Bush collected $50,000 to appear a year earlier, officials of the Texas-based Helping a Hero charity confirmed to ABC News.
The former resident was also provided with a private jet to travel to Houston at a cost of $20,000, the officials said.
The charity, which helps to provide specially-adapted homes for veterans who lost limbs and suffered other severe injuries in "the war on terror in Iraq and Afghanistan," said the total $170,000 expenditure was justified because the former President and First Lady offered discounted fees and helped raise record amounts in contributions at galas held in 2011 and 2012.
"It was great because he reduced his normal fee of $250,000 down to $100,000," said Meredith Iler, the former chairman of the charity.
One of the wounded vets who served on the charity's board told ABC News he was outraged that his former commander in chief would charge any fee to speak on behalf of men and women he ordered into harm's way.
It's the stuff of Republican nightmares: Fox News runs out of advertising time.
But in an election bursting with money from an expected 17 Republican presidential candidates and dozens of outside groups supporting them, NCC Media, the company that handles placement of political ads for most of the country's cable systems, is already working out the puzzle of how to accommodate everyone.
"Fox is a revenue driver," said Tim Kay, NCC's director of political strategy. "It's extremely popular as the way to reach Republican primary voters." He added: "What we're waiting to see is, is everyone going to want Fox News, or are they branching out to different channels to try to capture some of those same demographics?"
The news outlet sucks up more political advertising spots than any other channel, NCC data show, and Republican primary elections drive that tally. CNN follows, then NBC, CBS and ABC. A study by the Pew Research Center helps to illustrate why: It found that 47 percent of conservatives consider Fox News their main and only news source, and 88 percent of them trust it.

The Confederate flag was once a familiar symbol in country music, representing the rural South and the renegade spirit of artists such as David Allan Coe and Hank Williams Jr.
But the rebel banner that will be removed Friday from the grounds of the South Carolina Capitol has faded from stage and song, with many country artists quietly distancing themselves from the emblem that used to feature prominently in merchandise, lyrics and concerts.
"You won't find it being used by young country acts today, partly because it doesn't mean the same thing to them," said Robert K. Oermann, author and columnist for MusicRow magazine. "Partly because some of them aren't Southern and partly because if you want to appeal to a national audience, why would you do that?"
Charlie Daniels wrote a long column on his website addressing the most recent controversy over the flag, which he called "a sign of defiance, a sign of pride, a declaration of a geographical area that you were proud to be from."
The banner was not commonly used until the late 1960s, when it began to be adopted by some country and rock artists who identified as outlaw musicians appealing to blue-collar fans, Oermann said.
AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd on Thursday avoided prison after threatening to kill an employee, but a New Zealand judge warned him jail beckoned if his "rock star lifestyle" continued.
Rudd, 61, was sentenced in Tauranga District Court to eight months home detention after pleading guilty to the death threat and drug possession in April.
Motoring enthusiast Rudd arrived at court in a chauffeur-driven Bentley with a group of family and friends to support him.
Dressed in a purple velour dinner jacket and jeans, he said little to waiting media as he entered the courthouse beyond thanking fans for their "fantastic" support.
After being sentenced, he swore at a reporter outside the court and told him to "get a fucking job".

Tom Selleck reached a tentative settlement Thursday in a lawsuit that claims he stole truckloads of water from a public hydrant and took it to his ranch in drought-stricken California.
Resource manager Eric Bergh with the Calleguas Municipal Water District in Ventura County said he could not provide any details about the agreement until it's approved.
The lawsuit filed by the Calleguas Municipal Water District claims a tanker truck filled up at a hydrant and hauled water to Selleck's 60-acre ranch in Westlake Village more than a dozen times in the past two years.
The district said it spent nearly $22,000 for a private detective to investigate.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said on Thursday it would rename three navigational waypoints that are currently named after Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump (R-Hell Toupee).
FAA spokeswoman Laura Brown said the so-called "fixes" are used by pilots as waypoints to determine their position on a route. The three at issue are located near Palm Beach International Airport in Florida.
"In general, the FAA chooses names that are non-controversial and relate to the area in which the fixes are located," Brown said in a statement. She said it could take several months to update the names.
It is not uncommon in the United States to name flight coordinates after celebrities.
The New York Times first reported the FAA's plans.

A California appeals court overturned a jury verdict because of egregious misconduct by a state Department of Transportation lawyer who portrayed an injured motorcyclist minister as a low-life Nazi biker.
The unanimous ruling by the 4th District Court of Appeal on Tuesday was rare in reversing a case due to a lawyer running roughshod over her opponent and repeatedly ignoring a judge's admonitions. The justices took the extra step of referring the case to the state bar for an ethics investigation.
In a ruling replete with references to the Bible, Shakespeare, sports and a warning about the danger of invoking Hitler or Nazis in an argument, the court said it stopped tallying instances where attorney Karen Bilotti committed misconduct.
"While Judge (James) Di Cesare showed the patience of Job - usually a virtue in a judge - that patience here had the effect of favoring one side over the other," Acting Presiding Justice William W. Bedsworth wrote. "Imagine a football game in which the referee continually flagged one team for rule violations, but never actually imposed any yardage penalties on it. That happened here."
The case involved a minister in the biker group known as the Set Free Soldiers who was permanently injured riding in a funeral procession May 4, 2010. His motorcycle struck a freeway curb beneath an Orange County overpass known as the "Orange Crush" that once earned Guinness Book distinction as the world's most complex road interchange.

Investigators are probing whether anthrax played a role in the mysterious deaths of more than a dozen bison at an American Indian reservation in Montana, the state veterinarian said on Thursday.
Marty Zaluski said the bison, which have died since the start of the July 4 weekend at the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation, may have succumbed to anthrax. But he said more testing was needed to confirm what he emphasized was an early suspicion.
Anthrax bacteria can be found naturally in soils but the infectious and sometimes deadly disease it can cause is rare in humans and animals in the United States, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.
Spores of naturally occurring anthrax can lie dormant in the environment for years without being ingested or breathed in by grazing livestock or wild animals, according to the CDC.
Zaluski said results from testing of tissue from one of the Fort Belknap bison will help agricultural, tribal and wildlife officials determine the gravity of the threat posed by the unknown illness.
Ken Stabler, a star NFL quarterback who led the Oakland Raiders to a Super Bowl championship in 1977, has died at age 69, WPMI television in Alabama reported on Thursday.
Stabler, who was nicknamed "The Snake," died in Gulfport, Mississippi, the television channel said, citing the president of the Kenny Stabler Foundation.
Stabler played with the Oakland Raiders through most of the 1970s. He then spent two years with the Houston Oilers before winding up his career with the New Orleans Saints in 1984.
In his 15 seasons, he threw for 194 touchdowns and 27,938 yards. He was a four-time Pro Bowl selection and the NFL player of the year in 1976.
He also had a successful college career with Alabama's "Crimson Tide," where he played under legendary coach Paul "Bear" Bryant. The team won the Orange Bowl in 1966 and the Sugar Bowl in 1967.
