Helaine Olen: Republicans' latest tax con (Washington Post)
So this "postcard" isn't about simplifying the tax code. Then again, neither were the Republicans' tax cuts. It was a bait-and-switch, offering small, short-term cuts for the vast majority of filers, while saving the bulk of the $1.5 trillion in tax cuts for corporations and the wealthiest Americans. It's no surprise then that most Americans claim that they have not seen any tax cut in their paycheck, and the entire effort remains resoundingly unpopular. I don't expect a fake postcard simplification to change that. When it comes to their tax bill, Americans know a con when they see one.
Andrew Tobias: Big News …
… is often dumped on a Friday night - or in this case, July 4th Eve - on the expectation relatively few people will see it. So first, in case you missed it, listen to the July 3 audio of Rachel Maddow (44 minutes - no commercials!). The Republican senators in Russia stuff (no Democrats allowed). (You can watch that piece of it here.) The bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee findings that, yes, the intelligence community's findings were sound: Putin really did interfere with our elections. No effort is being made by the Republicans to get that to stop. (Oh - and the Malaysia stuff? Corruption on a massive and truly colorful scale, which the deputy finance chair of the Republican National Committee apparently believed he could get the U.S. Justice Department to drop if he were paid $75 million.)
Sam Wollaston: Rich Hall's Working for the American Dream review - Sigmund Freud in a cowboy hat (The Guardian)
Rich Hall is standing in front of a huge stars and stripes painted on a wall in a cold, grey, sad, post-industrial town in the midwest. He has fired TV missives/missiles from over there before - about his native south, native Americans on the big screen and country music. This time, he is taking on the big one: he is Sigmund Freud in a cowboy hat, and is analysing the American dream.
In 1566, Danish nobleman, astronomer, and writer, Tycho Brahe engaged in a duel with swords, and for the rest of his life he wore a prosthetic. What portion of his anatomy did his prosthetic replace?

Second City Television, commonly shortened to SCTV, is a Canadian television sketch comedy show that ran between 1976 and 1984. It was created as an offshoot from Toronto's Second City troupe.
The premise of the show is the broadcast day of a fictitious TV station (later network) in the town of Melonville. The location of Melonville is left unspecified; the very earliest episodes imply it's somewhere in Canada, though most later episodes place it in the US.
A typical episode of SCTV presents a compendium of programming seen on the station throughout its broadcast day. A given episode could contain SCTV news broadcasts, sitcoms, dramas, movies, talk shows, kid shows, commercial send-ups hawking nonexistent products, and game shows.
Also seen fairly frequently, particularly in later episodes, are behind-the-scenes plots focusing on life at the station. These often feature Guy Caballero (Joe Flaherty), SCTV's cheap, tyrannical owner and president, who, despite being perfectly ambulatory, uses a wheelchair to earn "respect" (i.e., sympathy) from employees and viewers. Also seen regularly are weaselly, sweating station manager Maurice "Moe" Green (Harold Ramis), succeeded in the position by flamboyant, leopard-skin clad, foul-mouthed Mrs. Edith Prickley (Andrea Martin); vain variety star Johnny LaRue (John Candy); washed-up entertainers such as singer Lola Heatherton (Catherine O'Hara) and comedian Bobby Bittman (Eugene Levy); news anchors Floyd Robertson (Flaherty) and Earl Camembert (Levy), talk-show host Sammy Maudlin (Flaherty), cult-stardom-destined and beer-addled brothers Bob and Doug McKenzie (Moranis and Thomas), and many others.

Those talented folks
Are the cast of Second City TV. One of my favorites was Count Floyd (Joe
Flaherty), host of Monster Horror Chiller Theater, who seemed to be
loosely based on Bill Cardille (Chilly Billy) who hosted Chiller Theater
on WIIC (now WPIX). Both the character and Cardille were also weathermen
on their respective station. I almost fell off the couch when Count
Floyd recounted the plot of a movie that failed to show up on time:
Blood Sucking Monkeys from West Mifflin. And "He got his cabbage leaf"
became a euphemism at work for "he toes the management line."
William Robert Cardille (December 10, 1928 - July 21, 2016), also known as Chilly Billy, was an American broadcast personality from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
After years of hosting many other local shows on WIIC (at a time where local stations often produced a significant amount of local programming), Cardille became host of the show for which he is probably best known: Chiller Theatre, a late night Saturday program that showed horror and science fiction films. The show earned him his nickname "Chilly Billy." Unlike some horror movie hosts, Cardille did not take on the persona of a horror movie styled character. "Chilly Billy" was an extension of his own personalty. Wry, wisecracking and conversational, Cardille went as much for a light comedic feel as he did presenting the movies. The program aired from 1964 until its cancellation in 1983, and had been so popular it kept Saturday Night Live off the air in Pittsburgh for five years.
Joe Flaherty, a Pittsburgh native, acknowledges this show as an influence in the creation of the popular "Monster Chiller Horror Theatre" sketches on SCTV. Flaherty's Count Floyd, however, was a comedic variation on Bela Lugosi's Dracula, forever frustrated his horror films were never particularly frightening.

Is it "Saturday Night Live?" My second guess is Second City TV, because the McKenzie bros. are Canadian, but really, those are just WAGs. I don't really know.
Headed out for a 4 hour walking tour of "The Real Philadelphia." These tours are fun - you see all kinds of sights, learn history, that you'd miss otherwise. My favorite part? We end up in Little Italy and have cheesesteak sandwiches for lunch. Good times!

The answer is "Second City Television" you Hosers! The Canadian SCTV was a skit comedy show similar in tone to the US Saturday Night Live, which isn't surprising because many of SNL's & SCTV's first writers & cast were former members of Chicago's Second City improvasional stage show. SCTV was arguably more consistently funny than SNL (especially after the first 5 years of SNL), but of course SCTV wasn't live with guest hosts and only 1 week to write the skits. And like SNL, many members of the SCTV cast acted in feature films because of their strong fan base. The only actor to be a regular on both SCTV and SNL was Martin Short.

He has been "preparing for this meeting" his whole life--so he doesn't have to do any actual preparation work. And just the 2 men meeting and doing god-knows-what with no note takers and no witnesses--to make it easier for him to kowtow and give away classified information and sell out our country.
Haven't we heard this before? Wasn't that his "strategy" before the wildly successful--accomplished nothing--meeting with Kim Jong Un? So, of course, it's his line and strategy before he meets his love buddy Putin.
But how has he prepared his whole life for Kim Jong Un AND for Putin? Is that like 200% of something? Or is he a defective version of a cat with two lives?

We are all only temporarily able bodied.
So far so good on beating cancer for now. I'm doing fine. At the end of the month I'll be 16 months into an 8 month mean lifespan. And yesterday I went on a 7 mile hike and managed to keep up with the hiking group I was with. So, doing something right.
Still waiting for future test results and should see things headed in the right direction. I can say that it's not likely that anything dire happens in the short term so that means that I should have time to make several more attempts at this. So even if it doesn't work the first time there are a lot of variations to try. So if there's bad news it will help me pick the next radiation target.
I have written a "how to" guide for oncologists to perform the treatment that I got. I'm convinced that I'm definitely onto something and whether it works for me or not isn't the definitive test. I know if other people tried this that it would work for some of them, and if they improve it that it will work for a lot of them.
The guide is quite detailed and any doctor reading this can understand the procedure at every level. I also go into detail as to how it works, how I figured it out, and variations and improvements that could be tried to enhance it. I also introduce new ways to look at the problem. There is a lot of room for improvement and I think that doctors reading it will see what I'm talking about and want to build on it. And it's written so that if you're not a doctor you can still follow it. It also has a personal story revealing that I'm the class clown of cancer support group. I give great interviews and I look pretty hot in a lab coat.
So, feel free to read this and see what I'm talking about. But if any of you want to help then pass this around to both doctors and cancer patients. I need some media coverage. I'm looking for as many eyeballs as possible to read these ideas. Even if this isn't the solution, it's definitely on the right track. After all, I did hike 7 miles yesterday. And this hiking group wasn't moving slow. So if this isn't working then, why am I still here?
I also see curing cancer as more of an engineering problem that a medical problem. So if you are good at solving problems and most of what you know about medicine was watching the Dr. House MD TV show, then you're at the level I was at when I started. So anyone can jump in and be part of the solution.

A rare parchment copy of the US Declaration of Independence found at a British archive among the papers of an aristocrat who supported the rebels has been authenticated, officials said.
The manuscript was discovered last year at the West Sussex Record Office in the southern English city of Chichester by a team of researchers led by two Harvard University academics.
The document "is the only other contemporary manuscript copy of the Declaration of Independence on parchment apart from the signed copy at the National Archives in Washington DC," known as the Matlack Declaration, a council statement said earlier this week.
There are other printed parchment copies and handwritten copies on paper but the Sussex Declaration, as it has been dubbed, and the Matlack Declaration in Washington are the only two known ceremonial parchment copies of the declaration.
The parchment is believed to originally belong to Charles Lennox, the Third Duke of Richmond, an army officer and politician known as the "Radical Duke" for his support of American colonists during the Revolution.
Former Fox News co-president Bill Shine (R-Predator Enabler) has been appointed as the White House's deputy chief of staff for communications and assistant to the president, it was announced Thursday.
Shine's hiring comes more than a year after he resigned from Fox News in the wake of the sexual assault allegations against Roger Ailes, the network's late former chairman.
Shine had been accused of covering up the allegations against Ailes and former host Bill O'Reilly, who faced his own accusations of sexual misconduct and subsequently departed Fox News in April of 2017. While Shine was never accused of sexual harassment himself, several women alleged in court documents that he ignored or sought to suppress their charges of misconduct at the network. Shine, who resigned in May of 2017, has denied those allegations.
In announcing Shine's new position, the White House cited his tenure at Fox News while stating: "He brings over two decades of television programming, communications and management experience to the role."
Americans celebrated the nation's birth this week, and one of the mysteries of its founding may soon be illuminated. This fall new research may confirm the authenticity of an engraved stone found near the "Lost Colony" of Roanoke - a stone dismissed for decades as a forgery.
"If this stone is real, it's the most significant artifact in American history of early European settlement," said Ed Schrader, a geologist and president Brenau University in Georgia, where the stone is kept. "And if it's not, it's one of the most magnificent forgeries of all time."
On July 4, 1584, English explorers sent by Sir Walter Raleigh first landed on Roanoke Island, in what is now North Carolina. After a botched attempt to establish a settlement, Raleigh sent a second group of colonists in 1587, led by John White and comprising more families. With him he brought his adult daughter, Eleanor White Dare, and his son-in-law Ananias, a stonemason. Soon after they arrived, Dare gave birth to a daughter named Virginia.
The 117 colonists arrived too late to plant crops, and their situation quickly grew desperate. They convinced White to return to England to plead for help. It didn't work. White arrived amid the Anglo-Spanish War, meaning every ship was commandeered to fight the Spanish Armada. He wouldn't return to Roanoke for nearly four years.
When he finally did, he found the colony deserted. There were no skeletal remains indicating they'd been attacked. The fort was dismantled, showing they hadn't left in a hurry. And on a fence post was carved the word "CROATOAN" - the name of a friendly Native American group nearby.
James Woods (R-Troll) drew ridicule on Thursday from Internet liberals after he said his talent agent dropped him because of his right-wing political views.
"It's the 4th of July and I'm feeling patriotic. I don't want to represent you anymore. I mean I could go on a rant but you know what I'd say," Ken Kaplan told Woods in an email, according to the actor. The actor called him a "political liberal" after posting the message online.
Kaplan, a partner at The Gersh Agency, did not immediately respond to request for comment from TheWrap. He also represents such stars as Winona Ryder and Kristen Stewart, according to IMDbPro.
Woods, an Emmy-winning actor, who has become an outspoken Trump supporter and ferocious Twitter troll in recent years, shot back at Kaplan on Twitter.
"Dear Ken, I don't actually," he said. "I was thinking if you're feeling patriotic, you would appreciate free speech and one's right to think as an individual. Be that as it may, I want to thank you for all your hard work and devotion on my behalf. Be well."
Nearly half of voters think President-for-now Donald Trump (R-Fabulist) is a racist, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Tuesday.
Forty-nine percent of voters said Trump is racist, while 47 percent said he's not, according to the poll. These numbers are similar to those from a February Quinnipiac poll, where 49 percent of voters said Trump was racist and 46 percent said he was not.
Forty-four percent of voters said they think "racist beliefs" were a motive in Trump's immigration policy, while 50 percent said Trump has "a sincere interest in controlling our borders." Sixty percent said the policy of separating children from their parents at the border was a violation of human rights.
Since enacting the policy, Trump and his associates have repeatedly pushed false, racist narratives to garner support, often associating immigration with high crime rates despite no evidence to support claims that immigrants commit more crime than U.S. citizens.
While only 11 percent of Republican voters in the Quinnipiac poll said they think Trump is a racist, 22 percent said they believe Trump has emboldened racist people to express their beliefs publicly.
Hundreds of ancient pottery items have been discovered in an Alexandria museum in a hiding place "most probably" created during World War II, Egypt's antiquities ministry said Wednesday.
Pots and other receptacles dating back to Greek, Roman, Coptic and Islamic eras were discovered "during restoration work" in a garden inside the Greco-Roman museum of Alexandria in northern Egypt, the ministry said in a statement.
"These pots were most probably hidden by (British) archaeologist Alan Rowe and... employees in the museum's garden during World War II", Ayman Ashmawy, head of Egyptian antiquities at the ministry, said in the statement.
"The hiding process was carried out quickly without being documented or recorded on the museum's list", he added.
Other items include coloured pots, large dishes and tableware from the Greek, Roman and Byzantine eras.
