Here's something I never thought I'd admit in public: I am a longtime follower of Adam Richman. Those of you who actively avoid the television channel Dave may not have heard of Richman - a white, physically unfit guy who is known somewhat incongruously as "the Muhammad Ali of the culinary world" - but I used to watch him stuff his chops with leaning towers of pizza at least three times a week.

Music streaming is making it really fucking hard for bands (and their Dickensian orphanage-baron labels) to make any money. Contrary to popular belief, it is impossible to continuously produce any kind of content without getting paid for it, because people have an annoying habit of needing to be able to pay for food and lodging.

Dino's soon became a hugely popular dining spot, featuring steaks and Italian cuisine. Dean even hired his brother Bill to run the place. That first year, Dean would often make personal appearances at Dino's, posing for photos and signing autographs. Sometimes he would bring over his celebrity friends, including Frank Sinatra and Shirley MacLaine.

Elizabeth Blackwell (3 February 1821 - 31 May 1910) was the first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States, as well as the first woman on the UK Medical Register. She was the first openly identified woman to graduate from medical school, a pioneer in promoting the education of women in medicine in the United States, and a social and moral reformer in both the United States and in Britain. Her sister Emily was the third woman in the US to get a medical degree.
On 23 January 1849, Elizabeth Blackwell became the first woman to achieve a medical degree in the United States. The local press reported her graduation favourably, and when the dean, Dr. Charles Lee, conferred her degree, he stood up and bowed to her.

Elizabeth Blackwell became the first woman to receive a medical degree in the U.S. (from the Medical Institution of Geneva, New York) in 1849. A true reformer, she doggedly pursued her degree with verve and aplomb. But, remember this was the 19th century and there were oodles of strange beliefs and practices. Dr. Blackwell believed that the Christian morality ought to play as large a role as scientific inquiry in medicine and that medical schools ought to instruct students in this basic truth. Yeah right! Dr. Blackwell also was antimaterialist and did not believe in vivisections, inoculation, vaccines or germ theory, instead subscribing to more spiritual healing methods. She believed that disease came from moral impurity, not from microbes. Damn, that's why I'm so morally recalcitrant!

As you all know the untimely passing of Terry was unexpected, even by
him. We all knew he had cancer but we all thought he had some years
left. So some of us who have worked closely with him over the years are
scrambling around trying to figure out what to do. My job, among other
things, is to establish communications with the Bartcop community and
provide email lists and groups for those who might put something
together. Those who want to play an active roll in something coming from
this, or if you are one of Bart's pillars, should send an email to

LeVar Burton's Kickstarter campaign to bring Reading Rainbow to more platforms and to thousands of classrooms for free closed today with funding of over $5.4 million - not including the additional $1 million that Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane
plans to donate. Having hit its ambitious $5 million stretch goal, Burton's company will now be bringing Reading Rainbow to Android as well as the Xbox, PlayStation, Apple TV, and Roku. Originally, Burton had only
announced plans to bring Reading Rainbow to the web. Reading Rainbow's campaign estimates that the web portion should be ready by next May.
Some of the additional funding is also going toward giving schools free access to Reading Rainbow's website and apps. Burton plans to provide free access for a year to at least 7,500 classrooms using the first $5 million, and his company will put the additional $400,000 entirely toward free access for classrooms as well. Altogether, Burton's campaign is one of the most successful ever to go through Kickstarter. Though it didn't set a new monetary record - still falling far behind the Pebble smartwatch - it did set a new record for backers, ending with a total over 100,000.

Stephen King, Nora Roberts and Donna Tartt are among the hundreds of authors who have added their names to an online letter criticizing Amazon.com for restricting access to works published by Hachette Book Group.
The letter, initiated by Hachette author Douglas Preston, urged Amazon to resolve its standoff with Hachette over e-book prices and other issues. Readers were asked to email Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos at jeff@amazon.com and "tell him what you think." Amazon has slowed delivery on books by Preston and other Hachette authors, limited discounts and removed pre-order tags for upcoming releases.
In a telephone interview Thursday, Preston said he was receiving so many emails of support that he felt like "a data entry clerk." Known for such thrillers as "Blasphemy" and "The Codex," Preston said he admired Amazon and appreciated how many of his books have sold through the online retailer. But he objected to Amazon's "scorched earth tactics."
"A lot of pain is being inflicted on innocent third parties," he said, referring to authors whose books have been affected.
William Shatner says he will choose the captain's chair in the back of an automobile as opposed to a captain's saddle on the back of a four-legged steed as he presides over the Calgary Stampede parade as grand marshal Friday.
Traditionally, Stampede parade grand marshals travel the route on horseback. But Shatner is choosing to ride in an antique car with his wife Elizabeth and says that while he would like to get in the saddle, it just wasn't practical.
"I don't know the horse. I've ridden a horse in parades before ... it's long, it's hard on the horse, the surface is very tough even with shoeing," Shatner said.
Shatner said he rode one of his horses in the last parade he was in and was placed behind the UCLA marching band. In order to keep the horse calm his trainer gave it a sedative.
"The band started up, the horse was very calm. But the band took a right turn because it was going to go around again and I was leading the parade. By about the third block the horse got real sleepy and the fourth block I had to get off and lead the horse. That was the last time."

Scientists studying the effects of the psychedelic chemical in magic mushrooms have found the human brain displays a similar pattern of activity during dreams as it does during a mind-expanding drug trip.
Psychedelic drugs such as LSD and magic mushrooms can profoundly alter the way we experience the world, but little is known about what physically happens in the brain.
In a study published in the journal Human Brain Mapping, researchers examined the brain effects of psilocybin, the psychedelic ingredient in magic mushrooms, using data from brain scans of volunteers who had been injected with the drug.
"A good way to understand how the brain works is to perturb the system in a marked and novel way. Psychedelic drugs do precisely this and so are powerful tools for exploring what happens in the brain when consciousness is profoundly altered," said Dr Enzo Tagliazucchi, who led the study at Germany's Goethe University.
British researchers have been exploring the potential of psilocybin to alleviate severe forms of depression in people who don't respond to other treatments, and obtained some positive results from early-stage experiments.
The scientific journal that published a study by Facebook and two U.S. universities examining people's online mood swings regrets how the social experiment was handled.
In a note of contrition, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences concluded that the decision to manipulate the content appearing on the Facebook pages of about 700,000 people without their prior consent may have violated some principles of academic research.
The journal also pointed out that, as a for-profit company governed by its own terms of service, Facebook had no obligation to adhere to those scientific principles.
The unusual "editorial expression of concern" surfaced Thursday, a day after Facebook Inc. Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg apologized, acknowledging that the world's largest social network should have done a better job communicating about the experiment.
The data-scientists conducted the study during one week in January 2012. They were trying to collect evidence to prove their thesis that people's moods could spread like an "emotional contagion" depending on what they were reading.

A dramatic jump in the number of earthquakes in Oklahoma to a rate never seen there by scientists before, appears to be caused by a small number of wells where wastewater associated with oil and gas production is injected into the ground, a study released on Thursday said.
Just a few of these so-called disposal wells, operating at very high volumes, "create substantial anthropogenic seismic hazard," according to findings from Cornell University researchers published in the journal Science.
Earthquake activity in Oklahoma has skyrocketed in recent years, and the U.S. Geological Survey recently warned that the state faces increasing risk of more potentially damaging earth-shaking activity.
For the first half of 2014, Oklahoma recorded 241 earthquakes of 3.0 or greater, up from 109 of that level in 2013, and nearly at the five-year total of 278 recorded from 2008-2013, according to state data.
From 1978 to 2008, the state on average recorded only two earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or larger a year.

The Vatican has formally recognised the International Association of Exorcists, giving its blessing to a group of 250 priests in 30 countries who claim to save the possessed from Satan.
The association's practice of exorcism is now recognised under canon law, the Vatican's L'Osservatore Romano newspaper reported Thursday.
Pope Francis often insists on the need to fight "Satan" and "demons", and was captured in dramatic images last year placing his hands on the head of a boy in a wheelchair who appeared to slump at his touch -- an act of prayer exorcists claim was intended to free the victim from the devil.
The first association of exorcists was founded by Father Gabriele Amorth, the Holy See's chief exorcist for almost 30 years, who has described intense sessions with possessed people who scream, blaspheme and spit shards of glass.

The CW and TMZ's social/media experiment, "Famous in 12," has been canceled, a network representative told TheWrap.
As the title of the show suggests, the series should have aired for 12 weeks. Instead, only five episodes aired. "Arrow" repeats will fill the show's Tuesday at 8 p.m. slot.
The show's executive producer and TMZ founder Harvey Levin told family members on Tuesday's episode that not enough people were watching to keep the show going.
The series' fifth episode and now season finale earned a low 0.2 rating/ 1 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and attracted only 520,000 total viewers.

The exhibit also includes five zones that range from showing exactly what one's excrement is made of to how different types of toilets are used around the world, and even a possible space toilet that could be used to grow plants. The exhibit is open until October 5 and costs 1,200 yen ($11.80) to visit.

A new attraction on Alaska's Kodiak Island featuring exotic dancers who entertain fishermen on a converted Bering Sea crabbing boat already has encountered trouble.
Barely open for business, "Wild Alaskan" has been briefly shut down by the Coast Guard. Someone reported a water taxi was overloaded as it transported patrons to the 120-foot vessel.
Owner Darren Byler says he is "100 per cent sure" whoever notified authorities is someone who doesn't like that he has stripping dancers aboard the vessel, which opened for business June 25. He says the water taxi is allowed to carry six passengers, and four others were crew members, so there were no violations.
Byler says his business was shut down early Saturday on unrelated safety-gear violations and reopened Tuesday.
