Paul Krugman: How Are These Times Different? (New York Times)
… Apple … has hardly any employees and does hardly any manufacturing. The company tries, through fairly desperate PR efforts, to claim that it is indirectly responsible for lots of US jobs, but never mind. The reality is that the company is basically built around technology, design, and a brand identity.

I'm pretty sure I watched every episode, but it was a long time ago, and I couldn't remember the name of the boat. I new it wasn't Minnow, or Calypso, or Nautilus, but I had to look it up.
It was a 33 foot Trojan Sea Breeze Model 346 Express Cruiser with Fly-bridge named "Argonaut."

This is it... Trojan Boats, of Lancaster, PA, was one of the premier boat builders in the industry. They were later bought by Carver Boats who also built great luxury yachts. Carver continued to build the Trojan Express line until 2002, If I were to want to buy a used, large motor boat, I would look for a Carver...

I avidly watched "Sea Hunt" with my step-father who was a scuba diver for the Sheriff's Department. When I was 12, he taught me how to dive, but I had to quit because I had problems equalizing my inner ear pressure. I couldn't go much deeper than about 25 feet without extreme pain. It was no fun having to stay in shallow water, so I just gave it up...

Prince William (Windsor), Duke of Cambridge (30) - I bet the Queen abdicates in favor of William to be King, instead of his father Prince Charles. Why? Liz loathes Charles' wife Camilla (so says the British tabloids) and will be damn'd before she sees her Princess Consort.

Remains of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, his wife and the actor who played Scotty will get a final resting place in the "Final Frontier" under plans announced Thursday to launch a space archive.
The project is being developed by the Houston company Celestis, which for years has offered a service that takes partial remains into space and then brings them back.
Celestis announced the new project a day before a launch from Spaceport America takes its 1,000th capsule into space. Ashes from the Roddenberrys have been on previous flights.
But this time they will stay in space. Plans call for the archive to be launched with a large experimental solar sail planned by NASA next year. The public can pay to have digital files, photos and DNA samples included. Also on the mission will be hair from science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke.

A Christian group that once promoted therapy to encourage gays and lesbians to overcome their sexual preferences has closed its doors and apologized to homosexuals, acknowledging its mission had been hurtful and ignorant.
Exodus International billed itself as the oldest and largest Christian ministry dealing with faith and homosexuality, operating since 1976. It announced it would cease operations in a statement on its website on Wednesday.
The Irvine, California-based group's board unanimously voted to close Exodus International and begin a separate ministry, the statement said.
"I am sorry for the pain and hurt that many of you have experienced," President Alan Chambers said in a statement. "I am sorry some of you spent years working through the shame and guilt when your attractions didn't change. I am sorry we promoted sexual orientation change efforts and reparative theories about sexual orientation that stigmatized parents."
Chambers said he was part of a "system of ignorance."
Less than a year after Philip Roth announced he had stopped writing books, another literary great may be retiring: Alice Munro.
The 81-year-old Canadian author, widely regarded as one of the world's greatest short story writers, told Canada's National Post during a recent interview that she was "probably not going to write anymore." Munro made the comments after receiving the Trillium Book Award for the story collection "Dear Life."
"Not that I didn't love writing," she said, "but I think you do get to a stage where you sort of think about your life in a different way. And perhaps, when you're my age, you don't wish to be alone as much as a writer has to be. It's like, at the wrong end of life, sort of becoming very sociable."
Roth, 80, made similar comments last year in explaining his decision to quit. The list of voluntary literary retirees is tiny, with the vast majority of authors continuing for as long as health permits.

The artistic director of Russia's Bolshoi Ballet, burned in an acid attack allegedly masterminded by a dancer, is nearly blind despite 18 operations to save his sight, a theatre spokeswoman said on Thursday.
The attack on Sergei Filin, which exposed poisonous rivalries over roles, power and pay at the theatre, has cast a long shadow over Russia's premier cultural symbol, from which it is still struggling to escape.
At a news conference dedicated to the theatre's 2013-2014 season program, Filin's absence was palpable as he prepared to undergo what Bolshoi spokeswoman Katerina Novikova said would be his 19th operation at a clinic in Germany to save his eyesight.
"I spoke with Sergei three days ago, and Sergei said the situation is such that he cannot see out of one eye at all, and he can see 10 percent out of the other eye," Novikova said. She would not comment on the chances his eyesight will be restored.
A Justice Department lawyer says the government has proven that Apple Inc. conspired with publishers in 2010 to raise electronic book prices.
The final arguments Thursday by attorney Mark Ryan were aimed at winning a court ruling against Apple in a New York civil antitrust case.
Apple attorney Orin Snyder had told Judge Denise Cote earlier that she would set a "dangerous precedent" if she concluded that Apple manipulated e-book prices as it entered the market.
The three-week trial stemmed from an antitrust lawsuit that the government brought last year against Apple and major publishers. The government has reached settlements with five publishers.

An Illinois Republican official resigned from his leadership post Thursday amid outrage over an email in which he berated a biracial former Miss America as a "street walker" who could fill a law firm's "minority quota" if she loses her bid for Congress.
The controversy, involving a county GOP leader in central Illinois who campaigned for U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis, created a new rift for Republicans already struggling to expand and attract women and minority voters.
Davis demanded the resignation of the county official, Jim Allen, after learning of what he called a "wrong, appalling and incredibly demeaning" email targeting Erika Harold, Davis' opponent in the March 2014 Republican primary.
Sent to Republican blogger Doug Ibendahl, the email referred to Harold as a "street walker" and "love child" of Democrats and suggested the Harvard graduate could fill a "minority quota" at a law firm should she lose the race.
Ibendahl, also a former party official, posted the email Wednesday on his website.
Maine's Republican Governor, Paul LePage, touched off a round of criticism on Thursday when he made a vulgar remark about a Democratic state senator.
LePage said during a television interview that Senator Troy Jackson, with whom he has sparred recently over budget issues, "claims to be for the people, but he's the first one to give it to the people without providing Vaseline."
The remarks followed LePage's promise, at an Americans for Prosperity rally in Augusta, the state capital, to veto a $6.3 billion, two-year budget. Democrats criticized LePage's unwillingness to compromise on the bipartisan budget, which last week passed with two-thirds majorities in both the Maine House and Senate.
Jackson called the comments "inappropriate, but nothing new," and said they reflected the governor's attitude that if "you're not 100 percent with him, then he doesn't want to deal with you.

In the first major global review of violence against women, a series of reports released Thursday found that about a third of women have been physically or sexually assaulted by a former or current partner.
The head of the World Health Organization, Dr. Margaret Chan, called it "a global health problem of epidemic proportions," and other experts said screening for domestic violence should be added to all levels of health care.
Among the findings: 40 percent of women killed worldwide were slain by an intimate partner, and being assaulted by a partner was the most common kind of violence experienced by women.
Researchers used a broad definition of domestic violence, and in cases where country data was incomplete, estimates were used to fill in the gaps. WHO defined physical violence as being slapped, pushed, punched, choked or attacked with a weapon. Sexual violence was defined as being physically forced to have sex, having sex for fear of what the partner might do and being compelled to do something sexual that was humiliating or degrading.
The report also examined rates of sexual violence against women by someone other than a partner and found about 7 percent of women worldwide had previously been a victim.
The leg irons that restrained abolitionist John Brown after his failed 1859 raid on a federal arsenal in Harpers Ferry are being sold Saturday in Texas, but two historical parks dedicated to his legacy can't afford to bid on them
Dallas-based Heritage Auctions estimates the shackles are worth at least $10,000, but some Brown memorabilia has fetched much more. In 2007, a rare daguerreotype sold for $97,750 at a Cincinnati auction.
History long regarded Brown as a domestic terrorist, and some Southerners still do. Many scholars consider Brown and his raid to be flash points, hastening the start of the Civil War.
But many now see him as a martyr, ahead of his time in trying to end slavery. The Connecticut native spent months plotting to seize 100,000 weapons from the arsenal and use them to launch a guerrilla war with the slaves he believed would join him.

"Obviously a 1-day-old puppy, even in the best of circumstances, [the chance of survival] is pretty iffy," Sharon Harvey, president and CEO of the CAPL, told Yahoo News by phone. "We want to give him every chance we could."
The staff decided Noland's best chances were to join a litter of nursing kittens. The question: Would the cat accept a puppy into her brood of four? Amazingly, mom-cat Lurlene welcomed the outsider.
In addition to spending eight to nine hours a day with the newborn kittens, the now-week-old pit bull, already growing bigger than the kittens, is being bottle-fed and taken home by staffers who watch over him at night.
